Awaken! Spring Concert 2018

From the Artistic Director

We began our season in late August with the bustling in and out of our classrooms as Lyric and Concert choir singers arrived for their individual fall voice checks and part assignments and uniform fittings. The concert choir began September with their annual retreat and campout. They pitched tents, painted flower pots, swam, toasted marshmallows, folk danced in the barn and got in a few hours of focused rehearsal to begin the process of becoming familiar with their fall repertoire. In a gloriously resonant space, during that campout weekend, they had a first glimmer of the sound and potential of the 2017-18 CCM Concert Choir.

Our article series funded by the National Endowment for the Arts was completed. A small subset of the Concert Choir sang in performance of the opera Werther with Baltimore Concert Opera at the Baltimore Engineer’s Club. The Giving Tuesday Campaign was revitalized and grew. On December 5, our halls and classrooms were filled with beautiful poinsettias and fragrant wreaths sold during our fall fundraiser. All three choirs presented our annual full -length holiday concert, Let Heaven and Nature Sing, at the Gordon Center. This was followed shortly thereafter by our first (likely annual!) CCM family caroling party in the neighborhood nearby, complete with hot cocoa and cider afterward. The Lyric and Concert Choirs joined together with the Hunt Valley Chorale and Hunt Valley Symphony as part of HVSO’s annual Holiday Spectacular! Six CCM students were selected by way of individual recorded audition by the American Choral Directors Association to sing in the 2018 ACDA Eastern Division Honor Choirs in Pittsburgh. We had two students represent CCM at the elementary level and four at the middle school level, all six of whom spent a third day a week at CCM preparing from November through February.

Lyric and Concert Choirs joined together with Maryland State Boychoir, and Peabody and Frederick Children’s Choirs for a benefit concert to benefit Blessings in a Backpack. The results exceeded all expectations, making it possible to assist more families than anyone thought possible. The Concert Choir joined the adult Handel Choir of Baltimore on HCB’s spring concert, Sérénité, and had the opportunity to sing several movements of two true major works of the choral art, the Requiems of both Maurice Duruflé and Gabriel Fauré, as well as to present two beautiful a cappella sacred works on their own. Last week we gathered together to recognize and thank our students for their continued dedication to our program and celebrated the achievements of our five graduates, who between them have spent 47 years singing and studying with us! All three of our choirs accepted a wonderful invitation from St. Joseph’s Church in Cockeysville to present an excerpted version of today’s concert last weekend in their lovely space and gifted CCM with the proceeds as a fundraiser for us. Yesterday, the lobby was once again filled with beautiful spring flowers sold during our spring flower sale. After today’s final concert of our season, at which we culminate our year, share what we have accomplished with our families, recognize our fine graduates and welcome the longawaited spring, a dedicated group of 18 singers will continue to rehearse twice a week for another six weeks to prepare for their trip to and performances in Montreal and Quebec.

Awaken indeed! Your children and our students are an amazing lot. They are smart, talented and generous. They are resourceful. They have learned to adjust to a variety of performance venues and procedures, sometimes with little advance warning or preparation. They have adjusted to different conductors, and rehearsal practices. But consider too that part of what CCM strives to do is educate whole people. After all the rehearsal work and music education, our students are prepared to perform in public, speak in public, use their artistry for the purpose of service to others, collaborate with others of so many different backgrounds and traditions, invent a project and then see it to fruition, fully knowing the value of the time and effort invested. There is no “instant” or “microwaveable” in what we do, and this lesson carries our students far. Everything I have described cannot happen by magic and does not grow on trees. Each element of our year I have described happened as the result of long-term planning, many, many volunteer hours of all kinds imaginable, and donations of all sizes. It was a very poignant moment recently when we received our first donation from a fairly recent graduate. This alum is still in high school yet decided to send a modest donation to CCM. It isn’t the amount that mattered so much, but the statement that this gesture made. We also received a testimonial from an alumna from quite some time ago who is now a pediatrician, attributing so many valuable life lessons learned to her years in CCM, not to mention that she is still singing in an adult chamber choir, decades later.

Whether you can volunteer to unload flowers from a truck or flip burgers at the campout or teach a class in your area of expertise or expertly hem uniform dresses and donate part of your fees back to CCM, or donate to our scholarship funds or sponsor another child’s journey through our program beyond your own or help send a CCM singer on tour or pay our rent for a month, please know that not only is every contribution of every size and kind so very sincerely appreciated, each plays a part in maintaining the quality and health of the program we offer. “Choral music is not one of life’s frills. It is something that goes to the very heart of our humanity, our sense of community, and our souls. You express, when you sing, your soul in song. When you get together with a group of other singers, it becomes more than the sum of the parts. (…) Pouring out their hearts and souls in harmony, which is … an emblem for what we need in this world (…) to express, in symbolic terms, what it is like when human beings are in harmony (…) a lesson for our times. (…) just need to remember, it is not a frill. It is like a great oak that rises up from the center of the human race and spreads its branches everywhere. This is what music does, and choral music must stand as one of the supreme examples of it.” John Rutter, 2016

We look forward to sharing with you very soon our calendar of enrichment and opportunity for the 2018-19 season. With your help, we can continue our mission; to offer unique connections and meaningful musical experiences that will educate and inspire the growth of young people as thinkers, as independent and collaborative musicians and as exemplary humans.

Hail and Farewell

Graduation is a joyous time—the graduates have accomplished so much, have grown as musicians and artists and leaders and human beings, and they are heading off to new musical adventures and expansive lives.

But graduation is also a poignant time of goodbyes, and every year the faculty and staff of CCM have a moment when we think, “How will we do without them?” It is harder still, when we are saying goodbye not only to outstanding CCM students, but to families who have involved themselves so completely in supporting not only their musical children, but CCM itself. Two of this year’s graduates have siblings who will remain in CCM, so for them and their families, it is not yet time for goodbyes. But we are graduating three other students, and therefore families, who have been pillars of our community from the moment they arrived—the Batchelor/Amzel family, the DiCarlo/Plank family, and the Schuler family. There is not enough room on this page to tell you all that they have done for us in their time with CCM. Whether they joined us fairly recently, as Lily’s family did, or started with Crickets and stayed for the whole ride as Samuel’s family did, or whether they’ve sent multiple children through CCM’s ranks, as Cami’s family has done, from the moment they arrived they rolled up their sleeves and asked what they could do to help. I can’t begin to list all the ways they’ve supported CCM, and therefore all of our students, and I wouldn’t dare try for fear of what I might forget. But suffice it to say that during their collective tenure, which stretches back to 2004, there has truly never been a concert, a fundraiser, a special event, a field trip, a tour, a retreat, an open house, a celebration, a publication, a promotion, a website, a reception or even a pizza party that hasn’t benefitted from these families’ generosity. They have helped fund scholarships and special purchases (rehearsal hall mirrors, risers, music library shelves and tents among other things), have served as ambassadors and spokespersons and chaperones, have provided stage management, language coaching, logo design, research funding, our spectacularly beautiful, complex website, food, flowers, furniture…and an abundance of kindness and encouragement. Even as I write this, they are working to bring you this concert, or helping to launch their chorister’s final tour.

We comfort ourselves with the knowledge that goodbyes make room for hellos, and that someone new always appears, to lend a hand when you need them. An endeavor like CCM thrives because it is a collaboration of so many committed, generous people, from the littlest Cricket to the most experienced parent to the faculty and staff and board members who give it their best every day. That collective strength will get us through this transition as it has every other time we have had to say farewell. But to our three departing families I say—please know how very deeply we will miss you, and how very grateful we are to have had you in our midst. Thank you, for all you have brought to CCM, for the legacy you and your children have left, and for remembering that once a CCM-er, always a CCM-er—so don’t imagine that we’re going to let you stray too far! All good things to you dear friends, until we meet again.

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS The Betty Bertaux Memorial Scholarship Fund CCM’s late Founder, Betty Bertaux, was committed to the ideal that no musically talented child would ever be turned away from Children’s Chorus of Maryland because of an inability to afford the tuition. When Betty passed away in 2014, a memorial scholarship endowment fund was created in her honor, to help CCM continue that commitment. Betty’s legacy lives on in the students she taught, the music she composed, the teachers and musicians she mentored, and at CCM—the school she created and nurtured for nearly 40 years. We welcome contributions to the Betty Bertaux Memorial Fund, so that we may further the cause to which Betty devoted her life—nurturing young musicians, helping them learn what they need in order to share their gifts with the world, and feeding their souls.

The Bill Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund The Bill Snyder Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2016 to honor the memory of Bill Snyder, the late, beloved Building Manager at Towson’s Cranston Building, the home of the Children’s Chorus of Maryland. Bill loved children, music and CCM. He was devoted to keeping the Cranston Building and its grounds, and CCM’s suite in the building, in excellent shape at all times, for the benefit of the students, staff and parents of CCM. Bill’s cheerful, professional disposition and extremely positive energy always spread a very bright light around the Cranston Building and at CCM, and he is deeply missed by all of us who relied on his skills and his unshakable good nature. We welcome additional contributions to the Bill Snyder Memorial Fund, so that Bill’s tender and generous care of CCM may continue, in the form of funding deserving students.

www.ccmsings.org/donate · (410) 494-1480 If you would like to commemorate a loved one by creating a memorial scholarship in their honor, please call us to discuss the possibilities. The objective of CCM’s Memorial Scholarship Endowment Funds is to maintain the principal in perpetuity, while the earnings are used to provide need-based financial assistance to CCM students. Scholarships may be applied to things such as tuition, supplies, uniforms, special events. study materials, and tour costs.

texts & translations On a Wonderful Day Like Today Text by Mark Monro On a wonderful day like today I defy any cloud to appear in the sky Dare any rain drop to plop in my eye On a wonderful day like today

On a wonderful morning like this When the sun is as big as a yellow balloon Even the sparrows are singing in tune On a wonderful morning like this

On a morning like this I could kiss everybody I'm so full of love and goodwill Let me say furthermore I'd adore everybody to come and dine The pleasure's mine and I will pay the bill

May I take this occasion to say That the whole human race should go down on its knees Show that we're grateful for mornings like these For the world's in a wonderful way On a wonderful day like today

Brother Come and Dance with Me Brother, come and dance with me Both my hands I give to thee Right foot first, left foot then Round about and back again

I would dance, but don't know how When to step and when to bow Show me what I ought to do And then I'll come and dance with you

Let your feet go tap, tap, tap Let your hands go clap, clap, clap Right foot first, left foot then Round about and back again

Let your head go nick, nick, nick, Let your fingers click, click, click Right foot first, left foot then Round about and back again

TUITION MISCELLANEOUS

Did you know…

• That a recent study shows that the average American listens to music four hours per day—which equals 60 full days a year, and 13 full YEARS of musiclistening in an average lifetime? • That childhood music training is associated with gains in spatial and mathematical reasoning and complex language-use, in addition to the joy and fulfillment of music-making? • That people who continue their choral singing into their later years report higher morale, more social engagement, fewer falls and less need for medication than their non-choral-singing counterparts? • That music is so beneficial to the brain and body that it’s used in the treatment of many neurological dysfunctions, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and stroke?

• That relatively few people are still engaging in team sports by the time they’re 40, but a high percentage of those who participate in group musicmaking as children remain involved throughout their lives? • That according to a 2014 study of nonprofit organization longevity, CCM has outlived the majority of nonprofits registered with the IRS, and has survived twice as long as the median NPO lifespan? • That despite these statistics, the nonprofit arts sector is suffering declines in public support, corporate, foundation and private donorship, and admissions revenue? • That ticket sales and performance fees make up only 5% of CCM’s revenue? • That tuition covers only 50% of the cost of a CCM education? • That for 40 years, CCM has maintained founder Betty Bertaux’s commitment that no qualified child would be turned away due to inability to pay?

Bee! I’m Expecting You! Text by Emily Dickinson Bee! I’m expecting you! Was saying Yesterday To Somebody you know That you were due—

The Frogs got Home last Week— Are settled, and at work— Birds, mostly back— The Clover warm and thick— You’ll get my Letter by The seventeenth; Reply Or better, be with me— Yours, Fly.

Won’t You Sing Along? When the sky is cold and gray, and my friend just moved away; When the day is long, then I need a song. When I lie awake in bed, sorry for the words I said, It helps to sing a song. Won't you sing along? Refrain: Lah lah lah (lah lah lah), lah lah lee (lah lah lee). Dah dah dah (dah dah dah), dah dah dee (dah dah dee). Sing it out (sing it out), sing it free (sing it free). That was nice (that was nice).

When the dark clouds bring a storm, in your arms I'm safe and warm, Love is like a song, making right from wrong. When I'm sick at home all day, you can hum the hurt away. With a melody, you can set me free. Sing it after me: (Refrain 2 times)

Now a wonder comes to me: without love, could music be? Thank you for the song. continued on page 21

Answer to a Child’s Question Text by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 – 1834) Do you ask what the birds say? The Sparrow, the Dove, The Linnet and Thrush say, "I love and I love!" In the winter they're silent—the wind is so strong; What it says, I don't know, but it sings a loud song. That he sings, and he sings; and forever sings he— "I love my Love, and my Love loves me!"

But green leaves, and blossoms, and sunny warm weather, And singing, and loving—all come back together. But the Lark is so brimful of gladness and love, The green fields below him, the blue sky above, That he sings, and he sings; and forever sings he— "I love my Love, and my Love loves me!" continued on page 23

Look around you today— You will see many people sporting various CCM pins. The oval “Sponsor” pins are given to honor those people who have made an extraordinary financial contribution to CCM, of five hundred or more dollars in any one year. CCM could not exist without their generosity. You may spot a child in the audience wearing a “Cricket” pin. These are children who have completed our pre-conservatory program and who may be looking forward to becoming one of the “big kids” next year. Finally, you will see many pins proudly worn by our choristers. Every pin represents a period of extraordinary commitment, on the part of the student and the family, to braving the elements, overcoming illness, and laying other opportunities aside, in order to achieve exemplary attendance at CCM’s classes and rehearsals. Good attendance is the backbone of a polished performance, and while perfect and near-perfect attendance isn’t always possible, we honor those students who accomplish it. And look how many have accomplished it again and again! Taken together, CCM’s pins tell the story of a tremendous commitment—of time, effort, funds, determination and talent—all of which come together to produce today’s concert. If you’re reading this program, chances are that some of that commitment has come from you. So thank you, to all who have made today’s concert possible. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Clear Water Texts by John Masefield and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Selection from Sea Fever ( John Masefield 1878-1967)

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking, And a grey mist on the sea’s face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

Selection from The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls (Henry Wadsworth Longfellow 1807-1882) Darkness settles on the roofs and walls But the sea, the sea in darkness calls; The little waves, with their soft, white hands Efface the footprints in the sands And the tide rises, the tide falls.

In Paradisum In paradisum deducant te Angeli; in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem. Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem.

May the Angels lead you into paradise: may the martyrs receive you at your coming, and lead you into the holy city, Jerusalem. May the choir of Angels receive you, and with Lazarus, who once was poor, may you have everlasting rest.

Old Tunes Text by Sara Teasdale Old Tunes is a new composition by Tom Shelton, commissioned by a consortium of choirs of which CCM is a member. All of the choirs in this consortium share the opportunity to program this piece as a world premiere this spring 2018 As the waves of perfume, heliotrope, rose, Float in the garden when no wind blows, Come to us, go from us, whence no one knows; So the old tunes float in my mind, And go from me leaving no trace behind, Like fragrance borne on the hush of the wind. But in the instant the airs remain I know the laughter and the pain Of times that will not come again.

I try to catch at many a tune Like petals of light fallen from the moon, Broken and bright on a dark lagoon. But they float away—for who can hold Youth, or perfume or the moon's gold?

Tota Pulchra Es Tota pulchra es, Maria. Et macula originalis non est in Te. Tu gloria Ierusalem. Tu laetitia Israel. Tu honorificentia populi nostri. Tu advocata peccatorum. O Maria, O Maria. Virgo prudentissima. Mater clementissima. Ora pro nobis. Intercede pro nobis. Ad Dominum Iesum Christum.

You are all beautiful, Mary, and the original stain [spot] (of sin) is not in you. You are the glory of Jerusalem, you are the joy of Israel, you give honour to our people. You are an advocate of sinners. O Mary, Virgin most intelligent, Mother most merciful. Pray for us, Plead for us, To the Lord Jesus Christ

Pavane A Pavane is a Renaissance dance form. Fauré, an impressionist composer, wrote this Pavane in the late 1880s for a countess as salon, or parlor music. This piece was originally written for solo cello with orchestra, but according to program notes by arranger Doreen Rao, the countess made it possible to realize Fauré's dream of setting this piece to include mime, dance and an invisible choir for a performance in Paris in 1891. We offer this interpretation of Ms. Rao’s vocal setting with steps from the original Renaissance Pavane dance.

Barter Text by Sara Teasdale Life has loveliness to sell All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder like a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstasy Give all you have been or could be.

Homeland I vow to you my country All earthly things above Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test That lays upon the altar, the dearest and the best The love that never falters, the love that pays the price The love that makes undaunted The final sacrifice

Though the road has bends and turns and my spirit suffers Humans fail, Systems fail, Shadows fall But the ruts run deep, cut by the blood of faces above and voices now silent But the message loud is heard: Homeland, Homeland Renew your youth Restore your soul!" 28

Children’s Chorus of Maryland

Homeland The country that I love, hold out your arms to me I Strive for you and give you the best I hope to be May your wisdom be your armor Your compassion be your sword May your strength be forged with mercy and your courage lives restore Homeland, the country that I love, forever reign supreme And when time stands still, my homeland may heaven hold your dream My homeland Homeland, Homeland, Ah

May Carol I’ve been a wand’ring all this night And the best part of the day, But when I come back home again, I will bring you a branch of May.

A branch of May I bring you here, And at your door I stand. It’s nothing but a sprout, but it’s well budded out By the work of God’s own hand. My song is done, I must be gone, No longer can I stay. God bless you all, both great and small And send you a joyful May
