REAL WORLD LEARNING

Partial and full scholarships are available on a limited basis, apply by 1/24/23 to qualify.

Did you know there is a school right here in Truckee/Tahoe where students travel to places like Iceland, Hawaii, and Washington DC as part of their coursework?

All of our students learn national standards through real world experiences like these. With graduates thriving at schools like Stanford, Georgetown and UC Berkeley, our students have real-world experience that makes a difference.

TahoeExpeditionAcademy.org

The Tahoe Expedition Academy school admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin.

As I write this update in early November, we’ve just had our first significant snowfall of the 2022-23 season here at Diamond Peak, and the mountain is covered by six to 10 inches of beautiful white fluff.

The new snow has all of us at the resort dreaming of the perfect corduroy and pillowy powder days to come, and we can’t wait to welcome all of our Diamond Peak family back to the slopes for another fun winter.

It’s always great when Mother Nature gives us a helping hand getting open for the season, whether in the form of snowfall or simply cold temperatures that make snowmaking conditions ideal. Here at Diamond Peak, we’re proud to continually reinvest in the snowmaking system that allows us to cover 75% of all our developed runs with man-made snow, as well as, the incredible team of snowmakers and groomers who are up all night making sure the conditions are as good as possible for the next day.

Whether you’ve been a part of the Diamond Peak family for 39 years (like I have this season), or just moved to the area and will be skiing or riding with us for the first time this winter, we hope you’ll continue to feel like family

when you’re on the slopes or at the resort. We have an incredible crew of returning managers, supervisors and front-line staff - many of whom have been here almost as long as I have - so you’re sure to see some familiar faces this season.

And I would be remiss if I failed to mention that we’re also hiring! So if you’ve ever wondered what working at a ski resort is like, I’d encourage you to come speak with one of the managers in the department(s) you’re interested in. They are always happy to chat about the fun perks and the challenging parts of working in this industry, whether you’re here for a season or a career.

By the time you read this, we’ll hopefully be a week or more into the 2022-23 ski season, and you’ll have a chance to come see the big news we’ve got this season - the new RFID access gates you’ll find at the bottom of the School House, Lakeview, Lodgepole and Crystal Express lifts. The new gates will utilize Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which opens the gate for access when a season pass or lift ticket card comes in close proximity to the sensors on the gates.

As I type, we are still waiting on a few components of the gates to arrive, which means we're aiming for a midseason launch of the new RFID system, presuming all goes smoothly with the supply chain logistics (which is never a given these days).

Another big change you’ll see at the resort this winter is the relocation of our medium- and large-sized terrain park features to the skier’s right hand side of the Spillway run, which will open the runs known as Penguin and Dusty’s up for traditional groomed skiing and riding. We’ve received quite a bit of customer feedback from folks who

missed having Penguin and Dusty’s as groomer options, so we’re going to give it a go this season and see how everything works out.

But that doesn’t mean that we’re not investing the same time and energy into our Village Terrain Park program as we have in years past! I’m happy to say we’ve hired a new Slope Maintenance Manager, John Tarmey, who comes to us with a ton of experience in all aspects of snowmaking, grooming and terrain park management. John was most recently at Heavenly, but is excited to make the move north to Diamond Peak and join our experienced team of snowmakers, groomers and park crew. Joining John in leading the department will be Billy Biggers, our recently-promoted Assistant Slope Maintenance Manager, who has worked his way up the ranks in the Slope Maintenance department over the past seven years. Given my own history with this ski resort, I’m always happy when we can promote folks from within to leadership positions.

I sincerely hope to get out on the slopes and make some turns with as many of you as possible this winter! Or perhaps our paths will cross one of the signature events we host every winter like Ullr Fest (Feb. 3), the Luggi Foeger Uphill/ Downhill Festival (March 25), Dummy Downhill (April 1), or our Last Tracks Wine/Beer Tasting events (scheduled throughout the late winter and spring).

Thanks for keeping Diamond Peak community-owned and communityfocused!

See you on the mountain,

MikeBandelin

WHAT'S NEW AT DIAMOND PEAK

Installation of RFID access gates: Diamond Peak is excited to announce the installation of new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) access gates at the Lodgepole, Lakeview, School House and Crystal Express chairlifts this winter (once we turn them on midseason) - providing hand-free/touchfree convenience for season pass and lift ticket holders.

“Waiting in lift lines, while rare at Diamond Peak, is never fun. The new RFID access gates should speed up the loading process, allowing for greater efficiency and shorter wait times,” said Mike Bandelin, general manager

of Diamond Peak. “Over the past few seasons, RFID lift access technology has truly become an industry standard at other high-end ski resorts, and we’re happy to be able to roll out this convenient new way to ride our lifts this season.”

In addition to the convenience for current season pass holders, the new RFID technology will make it easier for the resort to introduce new lift access products that will make skiing and snowboarding even easier for our Incline Village and Crystal Bay residents.

Relocation of Village Terrain Park:

The medium- and large-sized features in Diamond Peak’s Village Terrain Park (VTP) are moving for the 2022-23 ski season to the Spillway run, opening up the ski runs known as Penguin and Dusty’s for traditional groomed skiing and riding this winter. Smaller VTP jumps and features will still be located near the bottom of the Wiggle run (in the same zone they were located last season), while the Jump Start Park for

The Spillway location for the VTP’s medium and large features is actually a return to the terrain park’s location prior to the 2018-19 ski season, so the park crew is very familiar with the potential for this location. With its wide open layout and consistent grade, Spillway allows the park crew to build features that flow smoothly from one to the next, ensuring riders have just the right amount of speed to hit each feature in the park.

Skiers and riders looking for additional groomed options on the lower mountain will be excited to explore the Penguin and Dusty’s groomers, accessible via the Lakeview Quad, Red Fox double, and Crystal Express chairs.

New surface lift for Child Ski & Ride Center: Parents of Diamond Peak’s youngest skiers and riders will be happy to see

first-time terrain park users will also remain in the same location as last season – the bottom of Popular trail.

a brand-new magic carpet style surface lift in the dedicated learning zone that is exclusive to kids ages 3 to 6 enrolled in Child Ski & Ride Center lesson programs. As one of Diamond Peak’s signature lesson programs, the Child Ski & Ride Center has a dedicated learning area that offers the perfect gentle slope for children just learning how to use their equipment, stop, and make their first turns; and the new surface lift will make that process more efficient and reliable for years to come.

Food & Beverage updates: For the 2022-2023 winter season at Diamond Peak, the Food & Beverage team will be focusing on streamlining operations to better serve our residents and guests. Base lodge provisions will be changing back to a pay-last system. The pay-first system worked, but it was too labor intensive, and with the continued difficulty in finding dependable staff we feel this is the best option. We are also working diligently to bring back Wild Bill’s BBQ on the Main Lodge and Snowflake Lodge decks. Last season we were not able to staff these locations. Being able to operate these satellite locations greatly reduces the strain on all F&B outlets. We are looking forward to a great season.

Hear Why our Managers and Supervisors Love Working at Diamond Peak

We asked our staff what they love about working at Diamond Peak. In their own words…

“I have always enjoyed the fact that it feels like the bar from Cheers, “Where everyone knows your name,” and all the employees get to know each other both at work and outside of work. Diamond Peak has a community feel to it that I don’t get at the larger resorts.” - Jon Tekulve, Director of Skier Services

“DP is a fun place to work because of all the smiles and friendly faces. It is enjoyable to come here and be greeted with such great energy and warmth.” - Stephanie Koehler, Executive Assistant

“Diamond Peak is a fun place to work because of the small resort feel. You really get to know your coworkers across the resort as well as other members of the community. Previously working at larger resorts in the area I felt like a number in the system and here you really feel like part of a family.” - Chris Schmidt, Revenue Office Supervisor

“The people here are amazing - like family - and the terrain here is also really fun. The mountain might be smaller than some in Tahoe, but there are so many awesome secret stashes that you can explore all over the place. You could ride here for seven seasons like I have and still find new spots on powder days.”

- Paul Raymore, Marketing Manager

“Diamond Peak is a great place to work because you get to know everyone and you always have a friend to take a lap with.”

- Zach Lancaster, Base Operations Manager

“Diamond Peak is a fun place to work because you are constantly learning. Most of which goes even beyond the ski resort, that you can apply to your daily life!” - Billy Biggers, Assistant Slope Maintenance Manager

early-season ski tip

As you look into the future of huge snowstorms and powder days, remember that early season skiing will normally mean limited terrain. While our Diamond Peak snowmaking team is top notch and consistently delivers excellent early season conditions, there is just no way to cover the entire mountain without a little help from Mother Nature.

With limited terrain and early-season enthusiasm running high, make sure to keep your distance from other skiers and riders.

Start your day early. This will not only enable you to avoid the most crowded time of the day, but there is not a much better way to start your day than cruising down Crystal Ridge on freshly groomed corduroy while enjoying the amazing view of Lake Tahoe.

Also remember to take it slow - it is a long season and you are not going to start it in the same ski shape as you ended the previous season in. Take a few runs on easier terrain at slower speeds than you would normally ski. This will give you a chance to remember how, where and when to pressure and edge your skis in the turn, as well as letting your body start to use the ski muscles that have been dormant all summer.

Lastly, make sure to inspect all of your equipment for any damage and to ensure your bindings are functioning properly, then head to your local shop for a pre-season tune and wax to ensure you are ready for another great season!

early-season snowboard tip

If you’re reading this in mid-December when the magazine comes out, we can’t wait to see you back on the slopes of Diamond Peak soon. Keep these early-season tips in mind to ensure you have a great start to the season…

Prep your equipment: Go through all your gear. Check your bindings, make sure everything is tight and in good working condition (i.e. no cracked/broken straps, no missing screws, etc.). Check your boots to make sure they fit properly. If you got new snowboard boots, make sure you wear them around the house for a few hours on multiple days to break them in before the season starts. Tune or detune your board depending on what state you left it in at the end of last season. And remember that a good wax will go a long way when we’re riding on mostly man-made snow during the early season.

Prepare your body: Before the season starts consider doing yoga, going hiking and doing a little strength training to get your body back in riding condition. Focus on flexibility and core strength, which will set you up for a successful season of progression.

Get your bearings back: Once you get back on the snow get reoriented with your board, body and snow conditions. All of these things may have changed during the offseason and there’s no need to push things right out of the gate. Don’t expect to be able to ride at the same level you were at the end of last winter right away; rather, ease back into it.

Know the conditions: Just because it looks good doesn’t necessarily mean it is. Staying on groomed runs during the early winter can save your season. A fresh dusting of snow offpiste may look good and inviting, but may hide dangers like rocks, tree branches, bushes and other obstacles. Be extra cautious before leaving the groomed slopes to explore the trees.

Consider a lesson: Almost everyone can learn something new from our professional instructors, even advanced riders and if you’re looking to transition from beginner to intermediate slopes, intermediate to advanced, or groomers to off-piste tree riding, some expert advice can help you progress your skills safely with an encouraging companion there to guide you. Start with a one-hour private lesson and work with your instructor to make a learning plan for the season ahead.

Have fun: Enjoy being out on the snow!

meet our t-shirt design contest winner

In an effort to tap into the incredible creativity we know exists within the Diamond Peak community, last spring we put out a call for t-shirt design ideas. We received some great submissions from Audrey Krumenacker, Georgia Brown, Grace Sudbery, Dean Parr, Jennifer Grant, Sarah Burch, Susan Tavana (and the Tavana kids). But our winning design

came from Galen Ramos who created the design you’ll find on our 202223 promo/prize t-shirts that we’ll be giving away throughout the season.

We caught up with Galen via email to learn a little more about what inspired his artwork…

IVGID Quarterly: What was the inspiration behind your winning t-shirt design?

Galen Ramos: I wanted to equally represent snowboarder & skier. I also wanted to apply the current design style we're in right now which is retro70's line art/colors with distressed finish.

IQ: Why do you love Diamond Peak?

GR: The people. It’s a family friendly resort. Great views and brews.

IQ: How long have you been skiing/ riding here?

GR: Four years now.

IQ: Whom do you typically ski/ride with at Diamond Peak?

GR: Dan Sanderson a bud, fellow surfer, and co-worker.

IQ: What’s your favorite run or glade zone at Diamond Peak?

GR: Crystal Ridge, oh the views!

IQ: What are your hopes for the 2022/23 ski season?

GR: Snow, snow, & more snow... an end to the drought and a nice snowpack.

Want to get your hands on one of these creations?

These limited-edition t-shirts are not for sale at the resort, but keep an eye on our email newsletters and social media accounts for your chance to win one via our fun contests and giveaways this winter.

Got a design idea for next winter?

We’d love to see it. Send designs to marketing@diamondpeak.com with “T-shirt design contest submission” in the subject line, and you might just find your design on next year’s shirts.

The title of this article may be a little misleading, for two reasons… Catching up with Lila Lapanja - Diamond Peak’s homegrown World Cup ski racer - is never easy, whether you’re talking about matching her time down the challenging courses on the World Cup alpine ski racing circuit, or finding time to chat with her in between her world travels. Lila is the 2021 U.S. National Champion in both Giant Slalom and Alpine Combined disciplines, as well as a four-time North American “NorAm” Cup Slalom champion. She’s currently ranked #3 in the U.S. in Slalom.

Rather than wait to find her in Tahoe, we asked Lila a couple questions about the upcoming ski racing season via email earlier this fall.

IVGID Quarterly: How did you spend the off-season?

Lila Lapanja: After taking some time off to recover from a broken ankle last season, I took a lot of time to regain my physical strength and fitness this summer. I traveled to New Hampshire to work with my two favorite trainers and also worked with someone locally at the high school track. In August, I flew to Europe for two months to train on-snow and work on my technical skiing. After two more weeks at home training in the gym (and outside when the weather was nice), my off-season was complete. The summer goes by so fast, but I was able to find time to be in the Tahoe water.

IQ: What are your ski racing plans for this coming winter? Will you be in Europe? North America? Both?

LL: I will predominantly be racing the World Cup in Europe this year, with a few races in North America at the end of the season, including U.S. Nationals in Sun Valley, Idaho. However, everyone should put the Men's World Cup at Palisades Tahoe on February 25th and 26th on their schedules! It will be a great event, and I may even be able to forerun it.

This past season, I was able to achieve yet another level of success in my racing. I won my 4th North America Cup (“NorAm”) Overall Slalom Title and secured World Cup starts for this upcoming 2023 World Championship season - even while fighting through a broken ankle injury. I have worked very hard to return stronger and faster for this race season and am ready to showcase my dedication and compete successfully at the highest level.

IQ: Which race are you most looking forward to? Why?

LL: I look forward to the season opener in Levi, Finland because I like

the slope there and racing above the arctic circle is a unique experience. The sun sets at 2 p.m. so it feels like dusk! Sometimes you can see the Northern Lights.

I am also excited to return to Sestriere, Italy and race on a new hill at Spindleruv Mlyn in the Czech Republic. Hopefully there will be extra time to visit the city of Prague.

IQ: What’s the hardest part about pursuing a ski racing career?

LL: Great question. Whatever the hardest part is is very subjective. For me, the hardest part is being consistent: consistently able to perform at a high level, consistent with my attitude regardless of circumstance, consistent with my training schedule, and consistent with maintaining relationships and a healthy lifestyle (travel makes that pretty tough!). Consistency is really hard to find with all of the adversity the sport throws at an athlete, but ultimately accepting that challenge is how I have been able to learn about myself and grow the most. Once I find consistency with what I can control, I find trust and confidence because I am able to rely on myself better.

Another hard part: A ski racing career is a very internal, solo journey at times and it can get lonely. I miss home when I'm on the road for so long, so I find ways to bring home to me and remind myself I'm never alone.

IQ: Will you be able to make it home to Tahoe this winter?

LL: I hope so! Does March still count as winter? I'll definitely be coming to Diamond Peak to make a few turns whenever I am home.

I am very proud to be a Team Ambassador for the Diamond Peak Ski Team and Far West. I want to inspire and teach

young racers that an athlete's success is measured not only by the way one can ski under pressure and win; true success is attained through grace, kindness, resilience, enthusiasm and a pure joy of skiing fast.

IQ: What advice would you give kids on the Diamond Peak Ski Team who aspire to race on the World Cup circuit?

LL: Enjoy the physical and mental challenge of the sport and be nice to your mind. When you want to be hard on yourself or feel like you aren't good enough, put your attention back on how good it feels to ski and how lucky you are to be skiing. You can change your experience by how you think. Lean toward a curious mindset and go rip turns!

LEAD with Horses provides equine assisted counseling and education for children, youth and families. Each experience is tailored to individual needs and goals, making every client’s journey unique. This is one of many stories.

“Z” is autistic and struggles with OCD and anxiety. He came to LEAD with Horses in 2021 looking for help with his social interactions and communication. Z’s mother observed the immediate impact of her son’s work at LEAD with Horses, “I could see in one [visit] that he had gotten more out of one session than anything we’ve done before.”

Z built a relationship with the horses, and considers the herd his

“second family”. He has experienced significant loss in his life, and his mother credits LEAD with Horses with his increased ability to process and work through major life events and changes. “[He] understands that it’s ok to hurt…it’s ok to feel, it’s ok to say you’re not ok. It’s ok to have a bad day,” said his mother. She notes that this is something he’s struggled with in the past; he hasn’t always been able to sit with his own reactions to major loss. His recent emotional vulnerability and understanding that all of his feelings are valid is a result of his LEAD with Horses’ experience.

Z says that learning each horse's personality and letting them get to know him has assisted with situations outside of sessions. The horses make him feel more

comfortable in his everyday life. He carries photos of the horses Mithros and Wyatt so that when he’s doing something difficult, “they can help him through it.”

His favorite activity was building a timeline of his life - past, present, and future - with the assistance of another horse, Beau. Explaining to Beau which objects represent events in his life, and what events to highlight, helped him “get through times” such as switching schools and moving. This activity also helped Z identify goals and create a plan to attain them.

“I feel like horses can sense our feelings when we’re sad or happy or angry, and they’re really good at sensing and trying to make it better…and they just help you through hard times and it feels amazing.”

GOLF OPERATIONS REPORT

A very successful golf season is now behind us and plans are already under way to make next season even better. Many thanks go out to several people for making this season the success it was including:

• Golf Course Superintendent Jeff Clouthier and his entire staff

• Director of Food and Beverage Bill Vandenburg and his entire staff

• Sales and Events Coordinator Lauren Iida and her entire staff

• Senior Head Professional Nick Holligan

• First Assistant Professional Rob Bruce

• District Merchandiser Greg Merritt

• The entire Golf and F&B staffs at the Mountain and Championship Courses

The golf season may be completed, but don’t forget that the Championship Course Golf Shop is still open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 4pm throughout the winter season. The golf simulator is now operational and has over 100 golf courses to choose from. Golf lessons are very beneficial during the off season, and you get instant feedback when working with an instructor on the simulator. Club fitting is also possible using the simulator to accurately measure the perfect club fit for your swing and golf game. So come see us in the Championship Course Golf Shop this winter!

Our FlightScope X2 Elite launch monitor and indoor hitting net are set up in the Championship Golf Shop for the offseason. There are a variety of courses to choose from and 18 holes only takes about an hour.

The FlightScope also captures an accurate reading of your swing with Doppler radar, which provides feedback regarding ball flight, swing path and launch angles. Our PGA golf pros are able to analyze results from the flight scope and give swing lessons based on those results. Call 775.832.1146 or email golfinfo@ivgid.org to book winter tee times and lessons.

ELOPEMENT & MICRO WEDDING PLANNING

Some couples want a big wedding with a huge family presence and all the traditional aspects… which is great. We love helping to plan these big parties!

Here at IVGID’s Weddings & Events department, we also love working with clients who are planning much smaller affairs - elopement and/or micro weddings with just a few guests. These types of celebrations can be incredibly personal and meaningful, and both The

Chateau and Aspen Grove offer great options for couples looking to keep things intimate.

Elopement packages for up to 10 guests start at just $1,500 and include up to three hours of event space, white folding chairs, and Moet & Chandon Champagne.

Micro Wedding packages for up to 30 guests start at just $6,500 ($500

ceremony fee + $3,000 reception fee + $3,000 food & beverage minimum) and include white folding chairs, reception tables, chairs, and linen.

Upgrades for either package are available, and our Events staff are here to help you discuss options and plan the perfect celebration for your group size and budget. Reach out anytime by calling 775.832.1303 or emailing events@ivgid.org.
