Letter from the Editor Hello All! I am your Bulletin Editor for this 20162017 term. We have kicked off on a great start with so many different service events and I hope that you have each enjoyed your summer and your first month getting back into the groove!

I am thrilled to see the many new and old faces of our club as we return this year and gather for service. To all of the new people I can’t wait to get to know, and to all of the returners I’m so happy to see your wonderful faces. I am positive this is going to be a fantastic year for service and leadership among our club here at the University of Arizona. In this issue there is information on past events (such as Ronald McDonald house, Greening the Game, and the Global Search for Peace), upcoming events (such as Ben’s bells and Trick or Treat for UNICEF), club news, as well as some district news.

Thank you to all who have contributed to the news of the August/September issue, and please, everyone, feel free to send as many submissions for the newsletters as you’d like!

Letter from the President Hello everyone, Wow! We've already completed our first full month together as a club and I am so happy with the outcome! It has truly been an honor getting to know you all and serving with you as one family. In only one month as a group, we have participated in the Kiwanis de Amigos Rattlesnake Run, the Ronald McDonald House, the Hunger Walk with the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, Greening the Game, plus committing to peace as a club and hosting a super fun social at Oreganos?!

What a strong beginning to a great new year! Thank you all for being so supportive of CKI. As I say at the meetings all the time, CKI is truly what you make it and you are all making the most of it. As we move forward, we plan on becoming more involved in the KFamily as a whole and creating events that appeal to what the members want to see. In order to do that however, we need everyone to apply for committees so APPLY APPLY APPLY. Those will be due on October 11 along with Big and Little applications AND club dues (which are $30). Once again, I am so proud of you all! Keep up the great work.

Member of the Month Our member of the September month is Elizabeth Quinlan! She has participated in all of our service events and has been a fantastic new member!

Ronald McDonald House The Ronald McDonald House is one of our frequent events. We go as often as we can to cook dinner for the families living at the house. The Ronald McDonald house is a place where families of sick children can stay while their child is getting treatment. This time, along with many other times, we went and cooked breakfast for the families staying at the Tucson location. We included pancakes, bacon, waffles, fruit, and other delicious morning foods. Families were very grateful with the food that we provided and our members who participated did a fantastic job.

As often as we do this event, we never get tired of it, coming back every year.

Greening the Game Greening the game was a new event suggested by one of our members! It was a way of cleaning up the recyclables and trash after the U of A Football game! Members of our club went around the stadium after fans cleared out and helped clean up until the area was once again sparkling. Though this seems like a small service it is very important. The members who came to clean up did great, making the stadium cleaner and the stadium staff happier!

As our U of A football team won the game, our volunteer team won at service!

The Global Search for Peace This was a week-long event in which we, along with many others around the world, worked toward a better tomorrow by promoting peace and acceptance in our everyday lives as part of the Peace is Possible Campaign. It lasted from September 19th to September 25th and September 21st was the United Nations International Day of Peace! Throughout the week, our club spread the word and enacted many random acts of kindness. On the International Day of Peace members, along with countless others around the world, were silent for one minute at noon. This was a special time that we were able to share with many others beyond our own university, state, and country.

Oregano’s Social This was a great social event where many of our members got to know each other through laughter and dinner. We all came and enjoyed pasta, pizza, and some members had a pizookie for the first time!

CKI is meant for all of us, not only is it about service, but also about a good community. The event included old members and new members that have been able to come together over one great dinner. Though this event did not involve service it was a great way to come closer together as a club.

Upcoming Events Ben’s Bells Ben’s bells is a fantastic local organization with a primary goal of spreading kindness through the community. It was started by a family who lost their son and were dedicated to spreading his kindness through the community. This is one of our classic service events where we go to their University Blvd location and paint beads for their bells.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF Trick or Treat for UNICEF is a Kiwanis event. Halloween is a fun and exciting time and we use this time to raise funds for the children and women in need of the work of UNICEF. It’s a fun event in which we dress up for Halloween, and go from door to door for donations toward the cause. This is always a great experience to bond and enjoy the excitement of a holiday!
