Discovery itinerary of the village of Mougins on foot
“Mougins, a stroll through a hill-top village” Length of the visit: 2 hours
• PLACE DU COMMANDANT LAMY
From the departure point at the communal wash house, head in the direction of the fountain, which has throned the small central square, at the intersection of the avenues Victoire and Cdt Lamy since 1894. On your right, you will notice the restaurant “Au Rendez-vous de Mougins” the ex-Hotel de France. This building possesses a vaulted room on the first floor that used to be the Courthouse in the 15th century, where the people of Mougins, according to the Charter of 1438, were judged in their own commune. Directly facing, you can see the former post office, built over the water tank and out buildings of an old oil mill, just beside the “Le Bistrot” restaurant. Years before it used to be a stable for the horses that worked the oil mill in the impasse du Valat. The last olives were pressed in 1918 and the mill was then transformed into an elegant dwelling. Christian Dior was one of the famous occupants. At the back of the square you can make out the Town Hall, renovated in 1954 in the former Chapelle Saint-Bernardin (White Penitents) which was erected in 1618. This building now houses the Municipal meeting rooms, the wedding rooms and the Musée Maurice Gottlob. Musée Maurice Gottlob (Maurice Gottlob Museum): permanent exhibition of paintings by the artist (1855-1970), the former caretaker of the village of Mougins. We can see roman relics of the past, parchments of 15th and 16th centuries, a reliquary of St Honorat and a serie of mayors’ portraits of Mougins. The museum also hosts travelling exhibitions throughout the year. Opening hours: All year round, except November, from Monday to Sunday, from 10h00 to 12h30 and from 14h00 to 18h00 (until 19h00 from June to September). Closed on the 25th of December and the 1st of January - Admission free Tel: +33 (0)4 92 92 50 42 • On leaving the Town Hall, head in the direction of the rue du Badier, you will notice the facade of n°41, decorated by Paul Daemen, a talented artist and portrait painter who lived out his last years in the village of Mougins.
• RUE DU BADIER
Henri de Badier was the general treasurer of the county of Provence. The street “outside the walls” begins under Chapelle Saint-Bernardin (Town Hall) to end in the covered passage of the former Saint-Jacques hospital. You can also see a flour mill and an oil mill facing one of the last bread ovens in the village.

• PLACE DU COMMANDANT LAMY
Au départ du Lavoir, dirigez-vous sur la fontaine qui trône depuis 1894 à l’intersection des avenues de la Victoire et du Cdt Lamy. A votre gauche, vous remarquez le restaurant “Au Rendez-vous de Mougins”, “ex-Hôtel de France” abritant au premier étage une salle voûtée qui servait au 15ème siècle de tribunal, conformément à la Charte de 1438 stipulant que les Mouginois seraient juges dans leur commune. En face, les locaux de l’ancienne poste, construits sur la citerne et les dépendances d’un moulin à huile, jouxtent le restaurant “Le Bistrot”. Il y a quelques années, ce lieu servait d’écurie et abritait les chevaux qui participaient à la vie de l’ancien moulin de l’impasse du Valat. Les dernières olives y furent pressées en 1918 et le moulin fut transformé en habitation. Christian Dior en fut l’un des illustres occupants. Au fond de la place, on aperçoit la Mairie, aménagée en 1954 sur l’ancienne Chapelle Saint-Bernardin des pénitents blancs édifiée en 1618. Ce bâtiment regroupe les salles du Conseil Municipal, des Mariages et le Musée Maurice GOTTLOB. Espace Culturel et Musée Maurice Gottlob : exposition permanente des œuvres du peintre (1855-1970), ancien garde-champêtre de Mougins. On peut aussi y voir des vestiges romains, des parchemins du 15ème et du 16ème siècles, un reliquaire de St Honorat et une série de portraits des Maires de Mougins. Des expositions tournantes y sont régulièrement organisées. Horaires et jours d’ouverture : Ouvert toute l’année sauf en Novembre, du Lundi au Dimanche de 10h00 à 12h30 et de 14h00 à 18h00 (jusqu’à 19h00 de Juin à Septembre). Fermé les 25 décembre et 1er janvier - Entrée gratuite - Contact : 04 92 92 50 42 • Puis, en sortant de la Mairie et en vous dirigeant vers la rue du Badier, vous remarquerez la façade du n°41 décorée par le Maître Paul Daemen, artiste peintre et portraitiste de talent qui vécut ses dernières années à Mougins.
• RUE DU BADIER
Henri de Badier fut trésorier général de la Généralité de Provence. Cette ruelle “hors les murs” prend son origine sous la Chapelle Saint-Bernardin (Mairie) pour se terminer au passage couvert de l’ancien hôpital SaintJacques. On y trouvait un moulin à farine ainsi qu’un moulin à huile dit à “sang” en face de l’un des derniers fours à pain du village. 78 79
