架七⾔簡介

Winnie has a naturally warm and amiable personality Her quick and excellent navigation skills exudes a quiet confidence You never correctly guess her age because she could even play catc my nearly 3-year-old. I was very thankful for her willingness to up with me, despite several changes in plan Something about maybe her sharp intuition to reach out to some of the yo Christians among us, or her long experience serving in Libe maybe just the quiet joy she exudes - told me that I had to catc of her and hear her story.

1 “Even as a child, the Lord has prepared me. ” Winnie’s sharing began with her recent reflection of the Lord’s ever-present hand in her life, even when she was a child. “We live in the slums at that time, because my parents came from China some time after the war, and life was hard with six children in the family They were working day and night, so on Sundays, we were sent to church so we will not be making trouble at home. So I think even as a child, the Lord has prepared me and chosen me He gave me the understanding that I was bad and I needed salvation” At the age of five or six, through the teachings of the Sunday school teachers, it was clear that the Lord gave Winnie a clear understanding of repentance When she entered high school, she moved to a village without any church, but she studied in a school ran by Christian missionaries from New Zealand. Thus she was immersed in Christian teachings and enjoyed fellowship with fellow believers She grew in her understanding of God and Christian living, and she experienced many changes, including the quitting of bad habits.

When speaking of her family, she shared the immense challenge of bringing her parents and her siblings to Christ. Other than her older sister who is a Christian, the salvation of her other siblings is still her constant prayer The salvation of her parents was also a journey, and one of her greatest concerns when she was considering a life of full-time mission work. Then, she did not know if she should stay behind and wait till she saw her parents saved She was encouraged by a sister-in-Christ, with these words “You are not God You cannot convert them. You go, and do the work He has called you to do, and God will do His part.” Winnie shared that this journey hasn’t been easy. “It is a trial, you have to believe in Him and wait But it is precious When we as Christian workers, we give time to people and not to our own family. But God does things in His miraculous and mysterious ways. In Him, nothing is impossible” And God has been faithful Winnie was honored with the gift of bringing both her parents to salvation in their later years In fact, by the Lord’s providence, though Winnie was nearly uncontactable in the mission field in Liberia, the Lord opened a way for her to return to his side when he had a stroke In that time she shared the gospel to him daily and finally witnessed his baptism “God is just so gracious to me in my life.”
2 On living, dying and finishing well
And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!” ----- Revelations 14:13

Our conversation led very naturally to death. As my own father-in-law went home to be with the Lord very recently, much of our conversation revolved around the peace experienced by both believers and their family in the face of death. The true and eternal hope we have - accomplished by the victory of Jesus Christ our Saviour when He rose again on the third day, defeating sin and death - is such a blessed assurance! An assurance that death does not have the final say. An assurance that our sorrow will turn into joy An assurance in these uncertain times, that we have a God who holds our tomorrow

Winnie talked about the importance of finishing well, Winnie talked about the importance of finishing well, and not taking our salvation for granted and not taking our salvation for granted.

W W: On the day that I die, if I still believe in Jesus, that : On the day that I die, if I still believe in Jesus, that is a real blessing We have seen Christians that follow is a real blessing We have seen Christians that follow God but somewhere on the way, they fell So it is a God but somewhere on the way, they fell. So it is a blessing, if at the end, we still hang on. I always tell blessing, if at the end, we still hang on. I always tell people not to think I am very spiritual. On the day I die, people not to think I am very spiritual On the day I die, if I am a true and faithful Christian, then I can be if I am a true and faithful Christian, then I can be thankful Because everyday I face temptation As the thankful. Because everyday I face temptation. As the Lord’s prayer teaches us to pray “lead us not into Lord’s prayer teaches us to pray “lead us not into temptation ” . So there is nothing to boast, if I boast temptation…”. So there is nothing to boast, if I boast anything it should be in the cross (1 Cor 1:31). The anything it should be in the cross (1 Cor 1:31) The older we get, the more careful we have to live, to older we get, the more careful we have to live, to realize it is all by grace, not by ourselves It is not realize it is all by grace, not by ourselves. It is not about my resume ” about my resume… ” (Winnie laughed, referring to the (Winnie laughed, referring to the years of mission work and pastoral care in her years of mission work and pastoral care in her experience.) experience)
W W: You asked me in one of your questions, about : You asked me in one of your questions, about what I can leave with you. My answer is just this: what I can leave with you My answer is just this: to be faithful to the end. One verse I really liked, to be faithful to the end One verse I really liked, and took with me when I first went out into the and took with me when I first went out into the mission field, is from Galatians 2:20 “I have been mission field, is from Galatians 2:20. “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but crucified with Christ It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in Christ who lives in me And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me ” Everyday, I loved me and gave himself for me. ” Everyday, I have to die to myself, no more “I” but Christ And have to die to myself, no more “I” but Christ. And that is a lifelong lesson for every Christian, I dare that is a lifelong lesson for every Christian, I dare say. Because the self, the ego, can so easily take say Because the self, the ego, can so easily take over So even now, what I have to deal with over. So even now, what I have to deal with everyday, is my “self” everyday, is my “self”
J J: This can sometimes seem so abstract, what does : This can sometimes seem so abstract, what does it mean to die to oneself. Is there something it mean to die to oneself Is there something practical that you do, when you feel like the old practical that you do, when you feel like the old self is taking over? self is taking over?
W W: I think in life, we have many decisions to make. : I think in life, we have many decisions to make Every time we make a decision, we can ask, “Is this time we make a decision, we can ask, “Is this for myself or is this for God?” I think God sent me for myself or is this for God?” I think God sent me to Africa, not without a reason I have learnt a lot Africa, not without a reason. As a joke, Winnie told me about a joke some people in Africa made. They said that if they were dead, and lying in the casket at their funeral, and some creditors came to claim their debt in an attempt to cheat their family of money, they would get up from their casket to rebuke the debtors.
W: In some ways this applies to us. We are supposed to be dead, but yet we react In a practical way, when we hear criticisms against us, what kind of reaction should we have? If you were really dead, you would not react. Yet so often, so easily, we are caught offguard When people talk about us, we react with our old self If we truly live for Christ, then I should be the duplicate of Christ When someone is in need, I should be happy to help, not for any motives, but because of God’s love. If people criticise us, then in the same way, we cannot hear That is how I look at my life If my life is truly abiding in Christ, and I am dead in Him, and He is the one living in me, then it should influence my outlook of life, and my response to people. I am, of course, still learning. Surely, there are times when we have to speak up for others But it should not be about ourselves God doesn’t need us to go and deal with others, God wants us to deal with ourselves. We are the one that God is dealing with. I have to deal with myself It is important to be sure that I (referring to her old self) am properly dead in Christ

Winnie reminded me of the example of Christ. When he was ridiculed and spat on, he did not react The Lord says in Romans 12:19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Thus it is too, a lesson for us to learn, to leave it to God, for the injustice we might face Our duty, as Winnie puts it, is to be “nicely dead” Winnie says it is the reason she can always be happy because nothing people say can really touch her.

3 Learning to die to herself in Liberia

I could not miss the chance to hear a little about Winnie’s experience out in the mission field Winnie spent 17 years in Liberia before she was forced to leave due to the civil war in 2002.
W: I used to be a teacher and instructor for the blind, I was well-respected When I first got there (Liberia), I didn't know the language And I didn’t have much money because I didn’t have a job. I really felt useless. I felt very inferior. And the children were laughing at all the mistakes I was making as I learnt their language That was very humbling and it sometimes got me down I ask myself, “Why am I here?” But I knew in my heart I had to learn the language well. After spending a year at the mission station, I asked to move out to live alone in the village among the locals in order to learn the local language.
J: So you were completely alone?
W: Yes I was And one day I fell sick with Malaria I was running a high fever. The houses in the village were mudhuts, without electricity and running water I had to beg the little children to get me some water There was also not much food So when I fell sick, I really wanted to die They were kind to me, but they did not know what to do with me. They did not allow me to stay in the house because they said only dying people stayed inside They pushed me to take a shower and made me sit outside And they didn’t have chairs, so I sat on the ground very tired, leaning against the wall, with flies everywhere. It was normal for people to lie outside their homes, but it was strange for people to see a white person lying there I really asked God then, “What am I doing here? I had a respectable job, a good pay, and I was useful. And now I am here, I can’t do anything And I’m dying ”

So as I laid there, people came and showed pity on me, but I did not dare to cry though I felt very pitiful God spoke to me then with these words, “If Christ is God and He died for me, there is no sacrifice too great for me to make for him.” This was the motto of C T Studd, the founder of our mission organisation

Everyday, during the beginning of those 17 years, I had come to terms with the fact that I would face loneliness and sickness They also practised witchcraft And on full moon nights, The Devil (what they call the witch doctor) would be out with a group of men. They would go around the village and people were afraid of them because they could eat people alive Being new there, and very outspoken, I challenged the men in the village on a few occasions. So when news was out that The Devil was coming out one night, I was so scared, because I knew I could be the target I laid on the ground of my house (no bed yet), cold and frozen stiff with fear. I prayed to God. And it was at that point that I had to face this: If the Lord wills, He can deliver me. But what if the Lord would allow me to be in the hands of my enemies? That fear really paralysed me I prayed for the will of the Lord to be done, but also at the same time that He might deliver me. That really challenged me, am I willing to accept the will of God? If it is God’s will I should be delivered into their hands, what would be my response? At that moment, I really had to face myself. At that moment, I really had to die to myself.
