WE HAVE A NEW LOOK
We’ve run out of room in the Claver Center for our championship banners! With so many championship victories by the Dons, we had to reorganize our banners by sport. Last month, we auctioned off each banner with the proceeds benefiting athletic programs and scholarships for current and future Dons. Thank you to our generous bidders! Scan the QR code to see any available banners, and you, too, can own a piece of Dons history!
A Message From the Director
DEAR DONS ALUMNI & FRIENDS,
It is an honor to serve as your Director of Alumni. As I step into this role, I am deeply appreciative of the legacy I have inherited. Reflecting on those who have come before me, I am reminded of the rich history and traditions that make our community so special.
During my time as a student, Martin Correia ’87 was leading the Office of Alumni, long before he became known as San Diego’s Favorite Son. I fondly remember assisting him with various tasks as a student, and I am proud to call him a friend and mentor today. Tim Derenthal P ‘09 ‘12 ‘16 ‘18, who held this position for several years, has been instrumental in many of the events and traditions we cherish. As he prepares to retire at the end of this school year after thirty-five years of service to the Dons as an administrator, teacher and coach, we will celebrate his legacy in more detail in the next issue.
When I first connected with the Dons Alumni Association, Coach Dawn Lee ’89 and Coach Sean Doyle ’80 P ‘14 ‘17 were co-directors. Under their leadership, Career Day flourished, and Dons social activities thrived. More recently, Coach Doyle has led the Dons Alumni Association for the past decade. He played a crucial role in reconnecting alumni who felt distanced after the campus move and name change by hosting
reunions on campus and continuing the traditions that make our school unique. His contributions are immeasurable. For decades, Coach Doyle has been the heart and soul of the Dons community, serving as an administrator, teacher and coach. His impact on our culture and family is unparalleled, and we are blessed to have him.
I am incredibly grateful for Coach Doyle’s wisdom, guidance, and, most importantly, his friendship, especially as I assume the role of Director of Alumni. As the newly appointed Director of Football Operations for the school, he continues to shape young men and women through the football program and beyond. His deep care for our students is unmatched.
I feel fortunate to be part of this thriving community, and I am excited about the opportunities ahead to strengthen the Dons Alumni network. Whether it’s been a while since you’ve connected or you’re a regular, you are always welcome home. Your support means everything, and I look forward to continuing this journey with you.
Once a Don, Always a Don!

HONORING AMANDA POST ‘10 AND COACH DAN GEIGER
The cross country and track & field programs at Cathedral Catholic have a unique, strong sense of community. Much of the credit for this rests with Coach Dan Geiger, who, through his over twenty-five years of experience as head coach, knows exactly how to unlock the potential of each of his athletes. He has made such a positive impact on the running program as he deeply cares for each and every one of his athletes not only on their journey as runners but also as individuals. This success is due to a special combination of constant motivation, belief in the team and a carefully calculated training regimen.
Coach Geiger kicks off each season with a high-altitude training camp in Big Bear where the athletes receive an opportunity to improve their endurance all while bonding with the new team members. Just this past year, coming off a huge state championship win in the cross country season, Coach Geiger knew the team was capable and ready for more. He advocated for the girl’s 4x800 relay team to travel to the University of Pennsylvania to receive a once-ina-lifetime opportunity to compete against the best athletes from all over the world at Penn Relays. The team would never have been able to reach this accomplishment without his guidance and support. Coach Geiger truly emphasizes the importance of community and, through various team bonding activities after practices or meets, helps to develop a strong team cohesion. This sense of community helps to foster an environment of discipline, hard work and
perseverance, which are key to the success of any team.
Coach Geiger speaks very fondly of one of his athletes in particular, Amanda Post ‘10. Amanda was an extremely talented runner who excelled spectacularly in the 800m. Her dedication and commitment, coupled with her zest for running, were fundamental to the energy of the team. Her great success within cross country and track opened up the doors for a collegiate career as she was awarded a scholarship to run at Cal Poly SLO after graduating from Cathedral Catholic. Unfortunately, she never received this opportunity as just weeks before she was to start her freshman year, she and her teammate, Natalie Nield ‘10, passed in a tragic rollover crash. This incident was horrific, deeply devastating her parents, Greg and Missy Post, and her siblings, along with the whole Cathedral Catholic community which valued her so dearly. Instead of letting this incident destroy them, Greg and Missy decided to honor her memory and the beautiful life she lived. They created the Amanda Post Foundation to provide multi-year scholarships to outstanding female collegiate runners competing for their university’s NCAA track and/or cross country teams. To date, 82 scholarships have been awarded. Now, Mr. and Mrs. Post are working to honor her legacy and Coach Geiger’s within the Dons community.
Alexandria “Xani” Peña ‘24 Former Dons cross country and track & field athlete, University of Notre Dame Class of 2028
Dear Friends, Amanda Paige Post graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School in June 2010.
Amanda loved Cathedral Catholic. It was at Cathedral Catholic that we saw Amanda strike a remarkable balance between determination, focus, selfdemand for excellence and her sheer joy in everything she endeavored to do. It was at Cathedral Catholic that we witnessed Amanda’s faith and devotion to God grow ten-fold. It was at Cathedral Catholic that Amanda began running during her sophomore year under the skillful guidance of Coach Dan Geiger.
It was at Cathedral Catholic where we saw the blossoming of Amanda’s absolute passion for running, her signature race being the girls 800 meter, and she truly excelled at it winning gold medals at the CIF Finals in her senior year in the girls 800 meter, as well as running as the anchor for Cathedral Catholic’s girls 4x400 meter relay team and then going on to run in the girls 800 meter at the state championships in Fresno.
Amanda was so excited about starting college and running for Cal Poly SLO on a track scholarship, but her dreams never came to pass. On August 9, 2010, we received the call that all parents dread above all others—the call
informing us that on the return trip from a high-altitude Olympic training camp at Mammoth Mountain, our beloved daughter, Amanda, had perished in a terrible multi-car accident just south of Bishop, CA, along with her trainer, John Adams, and her Cathedral Catholic teammate, Natalie Nield ‘10.
Amanda’s assistant trainer, Drew Delis, and Amanda’s boyfriend, Derek Thomas ‘10, both survived but were in extremely critical condition for many months. God’s grace answered the prayers of thousands of people throughout the nation by providing both Drew and Derek with the skillful talents of some of the finest doctors in the country to enable them to recover and go forth to lead very productive lives.
On that fateful day, as our family drove those tortuous hours to Bishop, Missy turned to all of us in the car and said, “We all have a choice to make here and now. We can either let Amanda’s passing destroy our lives and our family, or we can choose to do everything in our power to live our lives honoring Amanda’s memory and legacy.”
So, fourteen years ago, we created the Amanda Post Foundation to honor
the memory and legacy of Amanda by raising funds to provide multi-year track and cross country scholarships to outstanding female collegiate runners well into the foreseeable future.
The Post family also looked to the future knowing that someday we wanted to do something special and lasting with Cathedral Catholic to honor Amanda this incredible girl who captured elegance and grace, adventure and unbridled energy, determination and true grit, mischief and laughter, all bundled up in radiating joy!
Now, fourteen years later, that “someday” is today. The Post family is so excited to be working jointly with Cathedral Catholic in the awesome “Fuel the Run” fundraising campaign culminating in naming Cathedral Catholic’s track the “Amanda Post Track” in perpetuity, creating a new Coach Dan Geiger Annual Scholarship and generating funds to support the school’s cross country and track & field programs.
With profound gratitude,
Greg and Missy Post

Dear Friends,
Cathedral Catholic is excited to join Greg and Missy Post in the Fuel the Run Campaign to honor their late daughter, Amanda Post ‘10, and long-time math teacher and cross country and track & field head coach, Dan Geiger. The $500,000 Fuel the Run Campaign has three areas of focus:
1. Naming the school’s track the “Amanda Post Track”
2. Establishing the Dan Geiger Scholarship
3. Starting an endowment to ensure the financial support of the school’s cross country and track & field programs
Due to the generosity of the Post family, as well as friends and supporters of the Amanda Post Foundation, Dan Geiger and Cathedral Catholic High School, we have raised 50% of our goal for the Fuel the Run Campaign.
The Post family’s financial commitment to honor their daughter’s legacy at Cathedral Catholic and their dedication to start a scholarship in Dan Geiger’s name and to endow the programs he has established over his more than thirty years of coaching at Cathedral Catholic are inspirational. Dan Geiger’s legacy at Cathedral Catholic and his devotion to the Dons, both in and out of the classroom, is well established and worthy of praise and recognition.
Please join us at Cathedral Catholic in supporting the Fuel the Run Campaign by making a gift to support the Amanda Post Track, the Dan Geiger Scholarship and/or the endowment for cross country and track & field.

THE STRATIS SISTERS AND THEIR SCOTTS
By Sophie (Lillis) Yaeger
When two sisters, Nicol ‘88 and Stephanie ‘90 Stratis, attended University of San Diego High School (UNI) in the 1980s, little did they know they would marry fellow Dons, each named Scott. Nicol and Stephanie’s future husbands, Scott Marshall ‘85 and Scott Wahl ‘91, likewise could not have foreseen being brothers-in-law sharing the same first name and same high school alma mater. This ultimately led to the Stratis, Marshall and Wahl families nurturing and enjoying lifelong, multi-generational connections to the Dons family.
From left to right: Scott ‘85 and Nicol (Stratis) ‘88 Marshall and Stephanie (Stratis) ‘90 and Scott ‘91 Wahl
NICOL AND SCOTT
Nicol ‘88, a graduate of Nazareth School, was the first Stratis family member to enter UNI as a freshman in 1984. Nicol’s parents valued Catholic education, and UNI was her top choice over other available schools. The ripple effect of Nicol’s decision was impressive. Not only did her younger sisters, Stephanie ’90 and Jennifer ’92, follow in her footsteps to UNI, but Nicol’s and Stephanie’s children attended Cathedral Catholic as well. Nicol loved being a Don and was on the Homecoming Court in 1987.
Nicol’s future husband, Scott Marshall ‘85, a St. James Academy graduate, entered UNI as a freshman in 1981, the year his older sister, Holly (Marshall) Caouette ’81, graduated from UNI. For Scott, UNI was “a strong cornerstone to our family that has created so many wonderful memories, great friendships and a focus on our faith.” Scott dove into high school life and the Dons community, juggling his time between classes and three sports— football, basketball and baseball, which he played all four years—and participating in Fr. Leo Lanphier’s Thespians drama group. Many in the UNI community had a lasting impact on Scott’s life, including Margaret Mauro, Steve Jacobacci, Jack Rubidou, Steve Altamirano, Fr. Lanphier and, of course, Coaches Dan Ritter, Zach Peck and Dick Serrano. Nicol and Scott overlapped one year at UNI but possibly didn’t connect because, as Scott likes to joke, Nicol “didn’t like football players at that time.”
After graduating from UNI, Scott went to USC, but by his junior year he decided to return to San Diego and finish his studies at USD. Spring of his senior year he met Nicol, a USD freshman and Liberal Studies major who planned to become an elementary school teacher. The two were on a boat in
Lake Havasu on a spring break trip of UNI graduates who were at USD and hit it off—Nicol fell in love with Captain Scott. They began dating that same spring of 1989 and were married March 20, 1993, at The Immaculata Catholic Church with many Dons attending. Scott says, “In every way, UNI has shaped our faith and values. Knowing that my future wife was exposed to the same morals and beliefs as me was the most important reason we married.”
STEPHANIE AND SCOTT
After graduating from Nazareth School in 1986, Stephanie Stratis ‘90 followed in her older sister’s footsteps and began high school at UNI. She recalls that off-campus PE was a blast and that she loved Mr. A’s ceramics class and Mr. Hamamoto’s typing class. Stephanie would have enjoyed taking classes such as forensics that are now offered to Dons at Cathedral Catholic.
Scott Wahl ‘91 entered UNI a year after his wife-to-be. Scott was the first Wahl family member to become a Don. His brother, Erik Wegner-Lonning ‘00, was bound for UNI a few years later. Scott recalls, “I was drawn to UNI because of the sports programs, the good
education, the family atmosphere and the focus on faith development.” An alumnus of School of the Madeleine, Scott was eager to continue his faith formation during high school. UNI clearly fulfilled Scott’s wish. “Faith is a part of everyday life as a Don, which is what makes the experience at UNI [now Cathedral Catholic] so unique,” he says. He credits UNI with instilling in him the importance of giving back to others and living a life of service. Like his future brother-in-law, this Scott also played football, which proved to be pivotal in his young adult life and beyond: “The life lessons and skills I learned playing football at UNI under

Coach Sean Doyle ‘80 have translated into how I approach my career to this day. I still train, practice, mentally prepare and review after an incident or event looking for ways to improve. I even use this process during planning meetings or for special projects. It’s a tried and true system that works. I put my heart into everything I do. Nothing is half-way.”
Stephanie and Scott met in 1988, during her junior year and his sophomore year. They recall having a class together, though neither can remember which class it was. They shared a connection as both of their families spent time in Borrego Springs.
Stephanie and Scott followed different paths after UNI. After a few years at junior college and working as an EMT, Stephanie left San Diego to attend the University of Arizona before transferring to the nursing school at Mount St. Mary’s College (now Mount St. Mary’s University) in Los Angeles. Scott remained in San Diego and studied criminal justice at SDSU. Despite their distance from each other, they maintained their friendship. After college in the late 1990s, when Stephanie began her nursing career at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and Scott joined the San Diego Police Department, they started dating. Scott liked Stephanie in high school and college and says the timing was finally right as they were starting their careers. They married on September 2, 2000, at St. Mary Madeleine Church with many Dons present. Scott had even invited Coach Doyle whom Scott considers “arguably one of the most influential people in my life.”
NICOL & SCOTT MARSHALL | STEPHANIE & SCOTT WAHL
Both married couples have made their homes in San Diego. Nicol teaches kindergarten at Del Sur Elementary School, and her husband Scott’s
continuing love of sports is evident from his 35-year career in sports leadership and management, notably as Chief Hospitality Officer for the San Diego Padres and most recently as CEO and Co-Founder of Liquid Sportsgroup.
Stephanie has spent her last 22+ years as a registered nurse in labor and delivery at Palomar Health, while husband Scott, after 26 years in law enforcement, achieved his dream of becoming Chief of the San Diego Police Department this past summer.
THE DONS PULL
Over the years, Nicol and Scott Marshall and Stephanie and Scott Wahl have remained connected to their Dons family. Both couples enjoy participating in alumni groups, volunteering, attending sports events, fundraising and keeping in touch with high school friends. Stephanie has loved helping plan some of her class’s reunions because “reconnecting with old classmates is always a good time.” The Wahls are grateful for Coach Doyle’s continuing friendship. “He genuinely remains connected, asks about our children and what they’re up to, and no matter how busy he is, he always has time for us!”
THE STRATIS-MARSHALL-WAHL FAMILY LEGACIES
Both couples feel blessed staying connected to Cathedral Catholic High School as parents of Dons. Between them, the Marshalls and Wahls have sent seven children to Cathedral Catholic.
Because of UNI’s impact on their own lives, Nicol and Scott’s top priority was to raise their family in San Diego so their daughters, Taylor, Madison and Riley, could attend Cathedral Catholic.
Scott Wahl ‘91 signs yearbook of his future wife, Stephanie ‘90
Stephanie (Stratis) ‘90 and Scott ‘91 Wahl with fellow Dons at their wedding
“It was a non-negotiable that our girls would be Dons,” says Scott. Their oldest, Taylor ‘12 was involved in Associated Student Body (ASB) and started the first Portuguese Club at Cathedral Catholic. She went on to study Psychology at USD and now lives in Nashville, TN. Madison ’14 played field hockey as a Don and went to Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN, where she met her husband, Dr. Jonah Friedrich. They now live in Boise, ID, with their soon-to-be one-yearold daughter, Marlowe, and Madison works as a Client Executive at Headspace. Riley ’15 played soccer for Coach Dawn Lee ‘89 and also played in college at UC Davis. There she met her husband, Nick Valverde. They are loving life in Temecula with their one-and-a-half-year-old twins, Lucia and Joseph James “JJ,” and are excited to welcome baby girl Valverde in February 2025.
One year after the Marshall’s youngest girl graduated from Cathedral Catholic, the Wahl’s oldest boy, Trevor, became the first of four to join the Dons family, followed by Lauren, Brady and Avery. As a Don, Trevor ‘20 was on the football, soccer and rugby teams. After high school graduation, he attended University of Oklahoma (OU). Trevor was a midshipman in Navy ROTC and, like his dad, studied criminology. He is currently a Naval Surface Warfare Officer stationed in Pearl Harbor. Lauren ‘21 enjoyed being a part of the cheer team all four years and being an Options Program Peer Mentor. She is in her senior year at TCU studying speech pathology. Brady ’24 played football and lacrosse for the Dons and then followed in his brother’s footsteps at OU as a midshipman in Navy ROTC; he is studying communications. Avery ’26 is in her junior year at Cathedral Catholic. She has played field hockey for the past three years and is involved on campus in ASB, the Options Peer Mentor Program and the Autism Awareness Club that she started on campus last year. Like her mom, she hopes to study nursing in college.
With Avery the last of the Marshall-Wahl children at Cathedral Catholic, Nicol and her Scott and Stephanie and her Scott hope and pray for yet another generation of Dons students. Scott Marshall jokes that when young men asked for his daughters’ hands in marriage, he stipulated as part of the marriage contract that all future offspring were to attend Cathedral Catholic High School, and “they agreed!” If Scott’s wishes come true, the Marshalls will have three grandchildren, Lucia Valverde, JJ Valverde and Marlowe Friedrich, in the Class of 2042, one soon-to-beborn grandchild in the Class of 2043… and maybe more! The Wahls likewise look forward to having grandchildren become Dons. When that day comes, Scott hopes that “Coach Doyle is still there too!”
In the meantime, the Stratis sisters and their Scotts can still be found back at their alma mater, as much a part of the community as when they were students. Scott Wahl feels the Dons spirit from UNI is very much alive at Cathedral Catholic: “I love the atmosphere that has been created at Cathedral Catholic. There’s no better place to be on a Friday night before a football game than The ZAK.” Once a Don, Always a Don!

THE LEGACY OF
THE RICKLING FAMILY
By Ava Enriquez ‘22, Providence College Class of 2026
One of the most iconic attributes of Cathedral Catholic today is its strong community. Many reasons might explain why the Dons are so tight-knit: the shared Catholic faith, the amazing school spirit and the smaller student population. Among the most prominent causes is the legacy families. These legacy families include UNI and Cathedral Girls High School graduates who, after forging their paths in the world, sent their children to our beloved school to become Dons. There are countless legacy families in the Dons community; in the Class of 2024 alone there were thirty-five legacy graduates. One such legacy family is the Ricklings.
The Ricklings celebrate Rosemary’s 90th birthday in Las Vegas in 2022
FAMILY HISTORY
Marvin and Jim Rickling were three years apart in age. The brothers grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, along with their brother, Jack (Jim’s twin); they were all very close. Years later, Marvin and Jim graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in business and Navy ROTC, the former in 1953 and the latter in 1956.
Following graduation, Marvin, the elder brother, commissioned in the Navy and was stationed in San Diego before his service in the Korean War. After his service, he married Rosemary Geyer in 1955. The couple settled in San Diego and had five children who all attended UNI: John ‘74, Marian ‘75, Brian ‘78, Gary ‘79 (who married fellow Don Beth McFarlin ‘80) and Tom ‘85. “My dad was very happy with UNI,” says Tom, Marvin’s youngest son. Marvin was truly an honorary Don in his enthusiasm for the school and influence on other young people to choose UNI as their high school, including Mike Costa ‘83.
Jim Rickling, the younger brother, married Edna Mae Kollstedt in 1956. He followed in his brother’s footsteps and also commissioned in the Navy after graduating from Notre Dame. He, too, was stationed in San Diego, where he and Edna raised four children who joined their cousins at UNI: Mike ‘75, Colleen ‘76, Karen ‘77 and Vince ‘79.
Both Marvin and Jim remained close and raised their families strong in the Catholic faith. Though the two brothers did not attend UNI, all nine of their children did. The result was a strong Rickling presence in the Dons community that continued with their grandchildren: Leila ‘07, Noah ‘09 and Mara ‘11 Rickling and Thad ‘06 and Jastin ‘08 Mostowtt. Moreover, the bond that the Ricklings share is an example of the familial Dons community. Each
of the Ricklings has compelling stories about his or her time at UNI and life after high school.
JOHN RICKLING ‘74
It began when Marvin’s eldest son, John Rickling ‘74, was given the freedom to choose where he went to high school. Through his sixth grade year, John, and his siblings, attended St. John the Evangelist School. The Ricklings then attended Blessed Sacrament Parish School. When it came time to choose a high school, John chose UNI because many of the people he grew up with were also going there.
“There are a lot of great memories from high school,” said John. “Predominantly a lot of it had to do with athletics.” John played football and soccer. As an offensive lineman, he played football for Coach Dan Ramos, who he called “Pineapple Pete.” Outside of athletics, John recalls that many people impacted him academically. “There were a lot of teachers there, a lot of sisters and brothers, who were very influential in my life.” John especially remembers Sister Roberts, a science and biology teacher who made an impact on his life as a high schooler. John shares
that Sister Roberts was a great teacher and taught him the importance of staying disciplined and focused on academics.
John also remembers the tight-knit community at UNI: “There was a lot of camaraderie between all of the students,” said John. “In fact, I stay close with quite a few people that I was close with in high school, even though I don’t see them as often. I loved the sense of family, the sense of camaraderie with everybody who was down to earth and genuine.” He had a wonderful time catching up with old classmates at his fifty-year reunion this fall.
Following high school, John graduated from LMU with a degree in business. He worked in the food and beverage industry for over fifty years. John is now retired and lives in Maryland with his wife, Lera.
KAREN RICKLING JORGENSEN ‘77
Karen is the daughter of Jim Rickling and John’s cousin. She and her siblings attended Holy Family School before attending UNI. Karen’s older siblings, Mike ‘75 and Colleen ‘76, attended UNI
and she followed suit. “There were four kids in my family, and my brother, Mike, being the oldest, went there first,” said Karen. “There was never a question of where we were going to go to school.”
She shared how her experience at UNI, with its Catholic values, had an impact on helping her grow as a person. “Being brought up Catholic keeps you on a good track for being passionate and charitable towards others and seeing people on a personal level.”
Karen was on the badminton team her senior year. “I had a lot of fun, and I really wish I had done it all four years.” She also participated in the gymnastics club during her time at UNI.
Furthermore, Karen remembers taking mini-courses at UNI, which were optional classes that students could take during breaks. They took place on and off campus. “The mini-courses were really fun,” said Karen. “They had everything from skiing to hiking.” She took the quilting, sailing and hiking courses.
After graduating from UNI, Karen went to junior college, then transferred to San Diego State University, where she studied art with an emphasis on interior design. She married Kevin Jorgensen ‘77, also a Dons alumnus, who graduated from Cal Poly with a degree in architecture. They raised two daughters together. Today, Karen lives in San Diego and is an interior designer.
BRIAN RICKLING ‘78
Brian is Marvin’s third child. He attended UNI because his older siblings and cousins were there. “My whole family was UNI-oriented,” Brian said. “I was already involved with UNI, going to watch my brother play [sports] and
my sister do different things at school. I was already there.”
During his time at UNI, Brian was involved in a variety of extracurriculars with his peers. “Our Class of ‘78 was a tight-knit group, and there were a lot of us that were super active and involved in school and in things after school.” He remembers being in the honors programs, working plays, being on the yearbook committee and, like his brother, John, playing football and soccer. He specifically remembers making a homecoming class float with a friend, Tim Hughes, at the president’s house on the campus of University of San Diego. Brian also recalls the giant mechanical Don that would be at games.
A fun memory Brian recollects from high school is “Surfer’s Wall” on the west end of the UNI campus. “From that wall, you could see down to Ocean Beach, and when the surf was big enough, you could see it,” Brian shared. “There was always a rumor that my two cousins, Mike and Vince, would show up early in the morning. If you could see the waves they probably missed their first- and second-period classes.”
Brian, similar to his father and uncle, attended the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a degree in architecture. Today, he is a licensed architect and runs Heritage Architecture and Planning, a company that focuses on historic preservation in San Diego. He married Jetsy Totten, and they had four children. While Brian’s oldest son, Timmins, went to St. Augustine, his three younger children, Lelia ‘07, Noah ‘09 and Mara ‘11, attended UNI and Cathedral Catholic.
TOM RICKLING ‘85
By the time Tom got to high school, it was inevitable that he would attend UNI. “I really didn’t have a choice but to go to UNI because my four older siblings and my four cousins all went there,” shares Tom. “I knew I was going there, and I was happy to carry on the tradition.” He remembers being on campus with his siblings for athletic events before high school.
Tom was on the football and track & field teams. He was also very close with his peers. “My favorite memories are beating Saints all four years in football and all the fun and crazy times my friends and I had,” said Tom. Today,
he and his classmates see each other several times a year.
Following his time at UNI, Tom went to the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he studied business and economics. He went on to get a master’s degree in secondary education from Northern Arizona University. Before beginning his teaching career at Cathedral Catholic, he worked in the hospitality industry for fifteen years in San Diego and Las Vegas.
Tom is now in his twentieth year of teaching and coaching at Cathedral Catholic. His time at UNI had a big impact on who and where he is today. “Seeing that I now teach and coach at Cathedral, I would say that my time at UNI was very important to me in that it inspired me to come back and be a part of the Dons experience from the other side of things,” shares Tom. “The moral compass that was
instilled in me and just how to be a good and productive human being” are lessons from UNI that remain with Tom today.
COMMUNITY BECOMES FAMILY
Being the oldest, John’s decision to attend UNI had a great impact on the lives of his siblings and cousins. He began a legacy in the Dons community that lasted multiple generations. “It’s a big part of our family. We all went to the University of San Diego High School. We were all Dons, all five of us—not to mention my [four] cousins who all went there. We were all part of the community, and we always went back to see games,” says John. From teaching at Cathedral Catholic to attending class reunions to choosing to enroll their children as Dons, the Ricklings have remained connected to the Dons community.
All of the Ricklings had a unique experience when they attended UNI, but one of the most prominent parts of high school they remember is the times they spent with their peers; they remember the people that they grew up with and remain in contact with today. Through their connection to old friends to remembering life lessons they learned in high school, the Ricklings carry on the Dons spirit with them.
The Ricklings are connected by blood and by their shared experiences as children, at UNI and beyond. Their closeness as a family is a testament not only to the strong bond that Marvin and Jim shared but also represents the tight-knit Dons community as a whole. While the Rickling family legacy continues on in the lives of its descendants, it will also remain in the history of the Dons.

DEDICATED DONS
Spotlighting Our Oldest and Youngest Dons Alumni Employees
SEAN DOYLE ‘80 Director of Football Operations
What does a typical day look like for you in your new role?
I spend time each day prepping for practice, contacting alumni to help support the Dons Football program and tracking the 200+ players.
What are you most proud of from your time as a student at UNI?
I loved being part of the football, basketball and baseball teams here and just being a part of the community.
What is one of your funniest memories from your time as a student?
During spirit week we would have fun competitions. One of the days was dress up as your favorite sport. It was a tradition back then that a small group of senior football players would dress up as cheerleaders and the cheerleaders like football players. I remember walking into class with a teammate with full cheerleading attire and the class erupted. Girls were trying to do our hair for us. It was fun. The teacher was Mr. Piccolomini, and he loved it also.
As a student, did you think you would end up working at the school? What brought you back to work in the Dons community?
Never. I was 23 and was married. My wife, Michelle, and I had moved back to San Diego, and I was taking classes at SDSU and Mesa College. On my way to the Mesa College classes I knew practice would be happening at UNI. I had a little time to waste, so I stopped by. There were only two coaches on the field for the freshman team. I called the head coach, Ron Hamamoto, and he hired me as an assistant. The next year I moved to JV/varsity, and then my third year I moved on to varsity. I loved it. I finished my credential and started working full time. The rest, as they say, is history.
What person, course or experience most influenced you while at UNI?
Coach Ramos (football) and Coach Casciato (football and baseball) I loved the way they both approached coaching, the standards they held us to and the drive they instilled in us. Mr. Dave Gorsich, my physics teacher, spent a reasonable amount of class time just talking about life, doing the right thing, singing songs, etc. but was an incredible teacher. When I took physics in college it was so easy because of him. I felt like he cared about us more than just a grade.
What is your favorite part of being a member of the Dons family? COMMUNITY. From the days I was a student here to today, community has been such a focus. It is something we need to continue to focus on because it is what makes us different. To be a faith community makes it even better.
What do you like to do during your time off work?
I like doing things around the house, hiking with my wife and, now that my children live away, going to visit them. I also like camping.
What is your favorite movie?
Good Will Hunting, Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump
What is your favorite food?
I love all food, but if I had to choose one it would probably be sushi.
Anything else you want to share about your time as a student or now as an employee?
This is a great place. I just hope to leave a small piece of positivity and make a difference on my blip in the history of the Dons.
What nicknames do people have for you in your role?
“Warmest Welcomer” and “Chief Smile Giver”
What are you most proud of from your time as a student at CCHS?
I am most proud of being asked to share a talk at the Junior Retreat when I was a senior.
What were your favorite classes at CCHS?
Freshman Religion with Ms. Gustafson, Biology with Mr. Montali and English with Ms. Layana
What sports and clubs were you involved in when you were a student?
Cross country, water polo, swim, drama, ASB, Ambassador for Christ Corps and Campus Ministry
As a student, did you think you would end up working at the school? When I was in high school, I hoped I would get the chance to work here. I like the community and the values.
What person most influenced you while at CCHS?
Ms. Gustafson because she was always so happy, positive and faithful.
What is your favorite part of being a member of the Dons family?
The community. There are so many ways to get involved Masses, retreats, shows, dances, games...everything!!
What do you like to do during your time off work?
I like to shop, and I love going to the beach with my friends, spending time with my family, traveling, going out to eat and spending time with my dogs, Millie and Daisy.
What is your favorite movie? High School Musical
What is your favorite food?
Sushi or penne a la vodka with shrimp. I also love broccoli.
What is your favorite local San Diego restaurant?
Amalfi in Pacific Highlands Ranch
What is your favorite way to stay active?
Zumba, going on walks and swimming
Anything else you want to share about your time as a student or now as an employee?
I love it here and I love the people! This is my dream job.

JOIN THE MATCH: A MILLION DOLLARS, ONE BIG GOAL
The Lebherz Family Foundation Scholarship assists Nativity Prep Academy students who desire to attend Cathedral Catholic High School. Nativity Prep Academy supports economically disadvantaged students from 6th grade through college. This particular scholarship funds a full year’s tuition for students to attend Cathedral Catholic. The funds allocated for their high school years will go back to Nativity Prep to help them expand their reach, plus the tuition each family pays will also support Nativity Prep, not Cathedral Catholic. Funds will be endowed to ensure the longevity of this scholarship.
One hundred percent of the Nativity Prep students who have attended Cathedral Catholic High School matriculate to a four-year university and feel academically, emotionally and spiritually prepared by Cathedral Catholic.
Phil Lebherz ‘71 has pledged $250,000 a year for four years as long as the gift is matched each year. Through your support, we have reached the halfway mark of our million-dollar matching gift! This puts us on track to endow the Lebherz Family Foundation Scholarship with over $2 million.
Denise Picazo, a proud Nativity Prep graduate from the Class of 2016 and Cathedral Catholic alumna from the Class of 2020, earned her degree from the University of San Diego in 2024. She is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Alliant International University.
Denise’s interest in psychology was sparked at Cathedral Catholic by her teacher, Mr. Caro. “He ignited my passion for psychology, and now I’m working toward my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology,” she reflects, crediting him with inspiring her career path.
During her time at USD, Denise had the opportunity to study abroad in Barcelona, where she deepened her connection to her own culture and gained a greater appreciation for the diversity of cultures on campus.

The Shlemon Hospitality Group was developed after opening its third restaurant in San Diego. Mark worked alongside his parents to expand the business by purchasing The Philadelphia Sandwich Co. and, shortly after, opening their first franchise project, The Red Chickz, in Carlsbad. Angelique launched RoseUP Media Group, a full-service marketing agency, and has elevated all of the brands on a local and national level. They have catered Cathedral Catholic’s Dons Alumni events, Dons Football team dinners and the swim team’s end-of-the-season event.
As Dons, Mark was involved in football, wrestling, track & field and Campus Ministry and Angelique was a part of Mock Trial, swim, did hair and makeup for the plays and served as an office aid.
