DR. JOSEPH G. SAN MIGUEL ’62

Joseph Girard San Miguel grew up on San Antonio’s south side and went from St. Philip of Jesus grade school to Central Catholic High School in 1958. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1966 with a degree in Accounting and married Olga Perera later that year.
Joe earned his MBA from the University of North Texas in 1968 and then joined the University of Houston faculty to see if an academic career suited him.
He received his CPA license in 1969. The San Miguel’s returned to UT Austin in 1969 where Joe taught advanced undergraduate courses while working on his PhD.
In 1972, Joe was awarded his PhD in Accounting and Information Systems and Olga received her B.S. Joe joined the New York University Graduate School of Business faculty in 1972 and soon began to build his bona fides as a business and management consultant.The Harvard University Graduate Business School lured him to Boston in 1974 where he taught MBA and Doctoral courses.
In 1982, Joe was offered full professorships at both Rice University and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
Joe’s teaching excellence brought invitations to teach MBA students at Stanford, Dartmouth, the University of California at Davis, the Peter Drucker School at Claremont Graduate School, and INSEAD Singapore.
Over his 42-year academic career, Joe published many articles in top scholarly journals; authored or co-authored several books; prepared hundreds of case studies used by MBA students and company executives worldwide; and supervised Ph.D. dissertations and masters’ theses.
Joe served on the Board of Directors, Committees, and Chaired Committees of Central Catholic High School, Homes For Our Troops, and a privately-owned Boston software company where he is also Lead Director. After his retirement Joe and Olga once again became San Antonio residents.
