About

Hi! My name is Cilicia and I am a proud Ngati Kahungunu woman and recent graduate of Architecture from the University of Sydney. I have a strong passion for sustainability, urban design, and community development. Throughout my studies, I’ve gained a solid foundation in architectural design and developed a unique perspective on creating environmentally conscious and socially responsible spaces. By integrating sustainable practices and considering the specific needs of communities, I aim to contribute to a more inclusive, attentive and sustainable built environment.

01 YERROULBINE THEATRE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

Introduction

Preface + Proposal

Yerroulbine, which means “swift-running water,” was the term used by the Cammeraygal people, the indigenous residents of the area where this building sits. Yerroulbine Drama House reflects and expands the experience and shape of its site, the Coal Loader, and seeks to celebrate its distinctive character by acknowledging both its indigenous and industrial pasts.

The proposed design incorporates designing on country motifs that are curated distinctively through form, symmetry, and movement. The progression of this subject is as follows:

01 TO UNFOLD

02 TO CONNECT

03 TO REFLECT

The arrangement is constructed to create a linear journey. Along this journey, the narrative is presented as dramatic architectural experiences. Thus, the theatre achieves recognition by virtue of its unparall eled experience and appearance.

Site Selection

The Coal Loader, located on the western coast of Sydney harbour has one hundred years of coal loading history. In Contrast to its industrial past, the site was significant to the Cammeraygal people and utilised for hunting. Ball’s Head is a place of extraordinary beauty, where thousands of years of history are still visible in carvings and Dreamtime stories of our first peoples. Since the shutdown of the coal loading industry on Balls Head Reserve, a small portion of the coal loader has been renovated into a public sustainability centre.

Form

In the initial design phase, I began with geometric and symmetrical shapes, ensuring the organization and overall structure of my design. In Phase 2, I expanded my exploration to include sculptural forms that go beyond the vernacular.

The shape of the building draws inspiration from maritime architecture, integrating seamlessly with the surrounding bodies of water. The exterior showcases a patterned steel mesh lattice, resembling three sails filled with wind. This composition pays homage to the historical essence of the coal loader while also adding a touch of celebration and dialogue.

Connection

The design of the theatre incorporates a scaffold that encourages people to gather and interact at its center. It provides opportunities for visitors to engage their senses by playing with light, enjoying framed views of the surrounding country, and connecting with the water. The choice of materials, includes sandstone brick, blackbutt timber, along with cultural details and patterns, which adds significance to the design. The overall purpose is to celebrate and revive the distinctive character of the Coal Loader, which serves as a hub for community and sustainability.

Program & Circulation

The layout of Yerroulbine Theatre is influenced by the way private and public spaces are separated and interconnected. The symmetrical framework brings together different elements of the building, with each wing serving a specific purpose and connected through a central meeting space. Overall, this design creates a cohesive and unified structure.

Introduction

Preface + Proposal

The design of Pirrama Bathhouse is influenced by a meticulous conceptualisation of atmospheric qualities through materiality, while also paying homage to the historical sandstone quarries of Pyrmont. Pirrama Bathhouse, a subterranean haven, offers a diverse range of immersive water experiences for visitors. It serves as a retreat, providing a space for introspection and elaxation, where individuals can replenish their energy and find solace amidst the soothing waters.

Objective: Develop a subterranean bathhouse that provides visitors with a multitude of opportunities to immerse themselves and interact with various water elements.

Vision:

- Honour the rich history of Pyrmont through thoughtful material selection and integration of historical context.

- Revitalise the formerly industrialised area while addressing the concerns and considerations of local residents.

Garrera Station Lednapper Nature Reserve, Enngonia

Introduction

Preface + Proposal

Garera Station, an old sheep station on Ledknapper Nature Reserve, is being considered for transformation into a cultural tourism site by the Murrawarri Elders. They aim to achieve self-determination through the Australian NGO Raw Impact [www.rawimpact. org/] initiative. Raw Impact is renowned for its work in empowering rural communities to be self-sufficient and is now launching the ‘On Country’ program in collaboration with First Nations communities. The goal is to bring teams of volunteers to Garera Station, providing them with an immersive experience in the genuine history and culture of the local people.

My objective is to bring the vision of the Elders and Raw Impact to life by developing Garera Station by working with the existing structures, providing thoughtful architectural solutions that respect the cultural setting, climate, location, and history of the place.

Puthanj Ngara which means ‘heart’ in Murrawarri, is a passive vernacular house designed to accommodate 5 local Elders.

Introduction

Preface + Proposal

Envisioned as a vibrant community hub, the House of Celebrations embraces sustainability and seamlessly integrates with the natural allure of Rosherville Reserve. The House of Celebrations functions as a threshold between two distinct spaces, public and private, while capitalising the site’s northeast orientation to enhance the experience of the surrounding landscape.

The design employs a deliberate interplay of materials, with rammed earth walls exuding resilience and solidity, while the roof and framed construction add a touch of elegance and lightness.

The program includes: An entry area, a main function room (150m2), kitchen (20m2), storeroom (20m2), two disabled access toilets (accessible to public) and an external area for ceremonies (100m2).

Introduction

Preface + Proposal

This brief focused on design development within regulatory and practice management frameworks. This included completing Development Application (DA) approvals for the demolition of existing internal and external structures on-site, excluding primary frontage, and the subsequent alterations and additions to the original dwelling. The project’s main goal was to satisfy the desires of the client while addressing the existing flaws in the property, all while preserving the original building’s character.

The key elements of the proposal include:

- Demolishing the back section of the house

- Designing an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, along with a separate lounge/TV room for the kids

- Explore the possibility of developing a master bedroom with an ensuite

- Utilise the side street, optimise parking and accessibility.

- Enhancing the interior’s natural light

- Establishing a seamless connection between the indoor living spaces and the outdoor/rear garden

- Embracing adventurous architectural solutions to infuse creativity and uniqueness into the renovation.
