LMPSC - April 2026

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM SUSIE

Dear Lanakila Members, Friends and Family:

Our dear senior center did its best to weather the storms that visited our island for the past four months. With the flexibility and understanding of LMPSC members and staff, the assistance of the State Department of Accounting and General Services staff, and support of Catholic Charities Hawaii, volunteers, and community partners, we continued to offer cultural club activities, classes, educational and health promotion presentations, and excursions faithfully despite the flooding and strong winds.

We thank the many donors for their cash and in-kind items. The generosity of friends and family makes it possible to fully stock our Thrift Shop, the Concession, the Show and Sell, and SAVERS FUNraiser activity, which earned money that we can use for future special events and supplement the cost of utilities to run the senior center.

On April 22, 2026, Lanakila Senior Center will be recognizing volunteers who have put in many hours of service the past year. About 800 individuals from our center and the community gave of their time to support the 60+ cultural club and class activities weekly and the 1600+ educational and fun events last year as well as helped to maintain the safety, health and beauty of the Center daily Our heartfelt gratitude to all volunteers for their supportive work in assisting LMPSC’s staff and to make so many activities possible!!!

Happy Easter and thank you to all volunteers during Volunteer Appreciation Month,

Welcome New Members!

OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE

HAITAI GUSUYOO (Hello Everyone)

The Nenchosha Club banner was custom designed in Okinawa by the late ONC member & Okinawan dance teacher, Mitsuko Toguchi Sensei. It features traditional auspicious motifs (kisshō monyō) symbolizing good fortune & long life. At its heart is Shō-Chiku-Bai— the “Three Friends of Winter” (also an Okinawan dance). Shō (pine or matsu), which remains green for centuries is for endurance. Chiku (bamboo or take) is for the ability to bend without breaking, strength. Bai (plum or ume), the first flower to bloom after winter, signifies hope The crane (tsuru), believed in folklore to live 1,000 years & the turtle (kame), said to live 10,000 years, together they express the ‘gold standard’ for longevity & good health While the red rising sun or Hinomaru (“circle of the sun”), represents vitality, energy & life In Okinawan culture (Uchinanchu), great respect is placed on ushigumi the elderly Okinawa is known as a “Blue Zone,” for numerous centenarians The banner honors Kūpunas or Nenchosha: May you be as strong as the bamboo, as enduring as the pine & blessed with the long life of the crane & the turtle.

February 26: Denise Werle motivated ONC members to get up & move to the beat of a lively medley of ’50s and ’60s hits, including “Mack the Knife” by Bobby Darin It was an invigorating & fun workout session a great start to a beautiful day

March 5: Tevita Apina & Amy Katsumoto delivered a heartfelt performance featuring Okinawan, Japanese & Hawaiian songs Amy Katsumoto, Tevita’s godmother, introduced him to her music instructor, Craig Shimizu (a student of Harry Urata Sensei), helping to nurture his musical journey Performing under the stage name “Hikariyama Torao,” Tevita of Tongan, Italian & Puerto Rican descent is Hawaii’s only professional enka singer. At just 15 years old, he won the 2011 KZOO Taikai Grand Champion title in Japan. The highlight was Tevita’s original song, “Kuʻu Pua Awapuhi,” a beautiful composition about love (on YouTube). He concluded the performance to enthusiastic calls of “Hana Hou,” returning with an Okinawan encore.

March 12: The Honolulu Police Dept Assistant Chief Raynor Ikehara & officers from the Beretania Station spoke to ONC members about kūpuna safety Sergeant Walter Espiritu emphasized the importance of the 4 A’s of self-defense: Attitude (look confident), Awareness (stay alert), Assessment (evaluate situations), & Action (respond quickly) Members were reminded to stay vigilant in everyday situations keep personal belongings close & never leave bags unattended, cross only at marked crosswalks while making eye contact with drivers, & avoid distractions like cell phones. Don’t cross when light is flashing or counting down ($130 fine). At home, always secure doors, windows & garages. To prevent scams, do not respond to unknown calls, texts, or emails, avoid clicking suspicious links, & never share personal information or send money without verifying directly with the company The department also shared employment opportunities, including a cadet position (minimum requirement: high school diploma or GED) with starting salaries ranging from $77,000 to $99,000 for recruits

March 19: Moilili Community Senior Center led members in fun exercises, along with singing & dancing to Okinawan & Japanese songs. Laughter filled the room during Faye Murata Sensei’s playful opening, when she surprised everyone by popping off her wig. Performers included Janet Nago, Kay Murata, Kil Dong Koh, Sachiko Chinen, Setsuko Tokomine, Zuiko Garrett, N Nakagawa, Sandy Shimakuro & ONC member Mildred Suzuki. Faye has been teaching exercises for 25 years & previously taught Japanese for 35 years at Chaminade University, KCC & St Louis High School where she retired & was the first female teacher hired She also hosts a TV program, “Faye’s Genki Taiso,” airing every Thursday at 8am on ʻŌlelo channel 54 Her motto, “Niko Niko Genki,” means “smile & stay healthy ” A highlight was her husband Robert Murata who sang “My Way” with heartfelt passion Umaribi-kariyushi yaibiin (Happy Birthday) to: Marion Arakaki, Naomi Badamo, Judy Di Bianco, Lynne Howells, Ellen Kishimoto, Herbert Imamura, Doris Nagamine, Alicia Nagasawa, Toshi (Toby) Sullivan, Betty Taira, Lillian Tanaka & Keiko Watanabe.

NIKO NIKO GENKI! Keep smiling, laughing & exercising.

HAPPY EASTER

If you’re still enjoying gingerbread cookies and candy canes, you might be surprised that Easter has arrived so soon. While Easter holds deep religious meaning, it is also a time for gathering with food, family, friends, and the excitement of an Easter egg hunt This year, we’re putting a modern spin on the traditional egg hunt Instead of searching behind trees and bushes, you can relax as the eggs are brought to you it's a high-tech Easter egg hunt designed especially for seniors. We invite you to join our gathering where JCC members will have the opportunity to win a prize. Wishing you a Happy Easter, Show and Sell Event Reminder

This serves as a reminder that JCC is hosting the Show and Sell on Tuesday, May 5, so mark your calendar and be sure to attend Your contribution of gently used items will be greatly appreciated Your support helps not only JCC but also other Clubs selling their specialties.

. April Events: 06 - Jukebox Singers

13 - Dr. Craig China – Prescription Medication

20 - Birthday Celebration/Mellow Friends (karaoke) 27 - Bingo

Recap of March Events: On March 9, we welcomed Firefighter Darryl Mau from the Honolulu Fire Department, who shared valuable fire safety tips covering stove tops, ovens, electrical wiring, and charging cellphone batteries He emphasized that many house fires start when food is left cooking unattended on the stove, so it’s important to stay nearby until you’re done cooking. He also recommended having an escape plan to keep your family safe. On March 16, we enjoyed a performance by Lanakila’s Music Lovers, led by Manny Espeleta Their selection of songs including “How Great Thou Art,” “Impossible Dream,” “Delilah,” “Dahil Sayo,” and others evoked fond memories from the past On March 23, Brian Suzuki took us on a nostalgic trip to the days when families would gather at theaters like Toyo, Kokusai, and Nippon to watch Japanese movies He shared photos of old restaurants and recounted stories about the families who owned them Brian's detailed recollections made each story come alive

Tanjoube Omedetou Gozaimasu to: Lillian Tanaka (90+); Caroline Harano; Lynne Howells; Sharon Isa; Susan Maida-Giangarra; Alicia Nagasawa; Mae Wakazuru May you all be blessed with many more Happy Birthdays!

CHINESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE

Happy Easter everyone!

This year Easter falls on April 5,2026 the same day as the Chinese QingMing Festival Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus from the dead Families and friends attend church services, wear beautiful Easter bonnets for the parade, children decorate eggs for Easter egg hunting and then have a lovely Easter dinner. Traditional dinner included lamb. Eating lamb at Easter represents the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for the sins of humanity and therefore commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus

QingMing Festival is like our Memorial day The Chinese people pay respect and honor their ancestors They believe that by doing so, they will be blessed and have a good year. QingMing started more than 2500 years ago and it became a public holiday in China in the year 2008.

VP Cindy Choy will conduct the meetings in April while President Mau is recovering well with doctors’ orders She hopes to be back at the end of June Thank you all for your healing prayers!

Treasurer Edward Lee enjoyed a wonderful trip to China. Please Enjoy the photo by Beverly Mau.
