END 312/ ARC 316 Design of Cities: Experiencing the City
Project 3 Linkage/ Connectivity Matters Analysis

From West Ferry street to East Ferry street, there are clear di erences ranging from street conditions, hous ing types, land use and demographics of the people in the neighborhood.
In order to study this area, our group chose to take pictures as we drive through the automobile - dominated community. We proceed to compile the pictures and come to an understanding why certain areas have better living conditions and how we can improve their living circumstances.
For residential districts, there are many houses compared to apartment buildings. During our eld trip on Ferry street, we saw people from all ages and backgrounds walking or driving through.
The diversity in the neighborhood is one of the most important factors in understanding why certain things are done this way and not another. Key landmarks and special murals will be marked down and analyzed as a way to know the neighborhood and what values they have.
While both the East side and West side are connected, the West side has many more amenities like stores and restaurants, accessibility to di erent modes of transport (bike lanes), less hazards on sidewalks (cracks, gaps, misalignments), bigger houses with unique designs, and majority of residents are non-African American.
An important reason why the East is in need of attention is because in order to improve and renovate we have to address the di erences in income, education, political representation, and the community’s stand ards. Ideas we have come up with in order to address these issues are encouraging companies to move to the East side.
In hopes of asking for government funding and grants, the sidewalks can be repaired and the safety will also increase. While cars are the main mode of transportation, hopefully implementing a bike lane can encourage people to ride bikes or other non-motorized vehicles.
Raising awareness of community engagement and development can create a closer relationship between both sides of Ferry street.
Regular maintenance of plants and sanitation could create a more inviting environment, the ecosystem can also be in uenced in a positive way. Many local businesses would bene t from the change, enhancing the history of the neighborhood so it may be preserved for future generations.
All results of this project will conclude in signi cant data that can be used to analyze the idea of space and how life is constantly changing and transforming.
After analyzing observations and data collected from both the East and West of Ferry street the conclusion reached was that the community is connected even though there are di er ences. Ranging from the architecture of houses and buildings, accessibility to the street and transit, conditions of roads and walkways, and demographics of each neighborhood. Every block honors the history and the stories of local residents, this brings life into the street with all users including visitors. Our project focused on this speci c street but this study opens up to many other aspects of living in shared space. For future studies this pro ject will act as a guide and reference for how planners and designers decide how to use the space and what is seen in real time.
