The Cloud Hop and work from anywhere event

Cloud Hop held an event at Villa Rosa, Kempimski on 20th March, 2014 to introduce the product and solutions portfolio to their customers. The customers who attended the event were from the banking and financial services sector, SME’s and the Corporate sector. Action for Children with Disability Awards At The Boma Inn

he Copy Cat Ltd held its Pioneer Management Trainee Graduation on 10th May, 2014 at Essar House. The management trainees successfully completed a one year training and were employed by Copy Cat. The event was graced by Mr. Christopher Moturi, Deputy Director at The School of Computing and Informatics, University of Nairobi.

The Copy Cat Ltd’s Executive Director, Mr. Vishal Patel, the leadership team and management trainee mentors were also present at the event.

The Deputy Director at Nairobi University’s School of Computing and Informatics, Mr. Moturi was proud of Copy Cat, as we are the first IT company in Kenya to adopt and implement an IT management trainee program. He went on to recognize the effort of Copy Cat in that such programs are very vital in tapping the skills and knowledge of fresh university

graduates through training, mentorship and guidance. This makes them exceptionally good people ready to take on any challenge in the industry.

The new management trainees were officially welcomed and induced into the program. Mr. Vishal Patel, assured the new management trainees of a great work-learn environment, the growth and nurture of their skills and knowledge, as well as personal growth. He also wished them well in the one year they are to train at Copy Cat. He also commended the outgoing management trainees for the value, effort and personal contribution that they added to the company whilst they were on training.

CSR Activities The Copy Cat Ltd Sponsors Rhino Charge 2014

The Copy Cat Ltd yet again participates in the annual Rhino Charge event. This is the 26th edition that took place in KALAMA CONSERVACY in Isiolo on the 1st of June 2014. The event, organized by The Rhino Ark Charitable Trust, is held to raise funds for a very noble cause – conservation of Kenya’s Aberdare Ecosystem, fencing of Mt. Kenya and to start the Mau Eburu projects.

We participated in the event by manning a control check point/guard post. In addition to that, Copy Cat sponsors Car no. 14.

We thank our partners and suppliers for their valuable contribution and support towards this worthy cause. CSR Activities Dagoretti Child In Need Project; A partnership between Copy Cat and Cisco CISCO partnered with Copy Cat in networking the Amref’s Dagoretti Child-In-Need Project’s Community Empowerment Center. The official launch was held at the center on the 31st of March, 2014 whereby a fully functional computer lab, IP telephony and video conferencing facilities were presented to Amref for the under-privileged and street children.

This effort was to connect the children to the World Wide Web and give them a chance to access valuable learning content online. This is essential considering that the world is in a digital age and the under-privileged children ought to get the chance to be part of the global trends and to pursue their dreams.

Develop these skills to excel in any customer service position, regardless of your responsibility, your industry or the type of customer you are working with each day.

1. Be A Great Listener Listen intently, ask questions and summarize the answers of your customers. This will surely show that you care and want to offer the right solution.

8 Unexpected Perks of Fully Applying Yourself at Work

I

t amazes me how many employees don’t fully apply themselves in their work. I am not suggesting that employees don’t care; they just aren’t mindful enough nor have they been taught how to best apply their strengths, natural skills and characteristics. Many times this results from not having been properly trained, not being made aware of their unique aptitudes, or because their leader or organization doesn’t know how to best utilize them. As such, there are many employees that spend their entire careers in search of the right workplace environment, the exemplary supervisor, or that one defining moment that enables them to discover their full potential.

There is no question that when employees decide to fully apply themselves, their workplace productivity, results and overall performance increase. However, there are many other things that begin to take shape. Not only does an employee’s confidence, competitiveness and engagement increase, but they begin to understand the depth and breadth of their role and responsibilities; more than that, they discover where they best fit in. It’s as if suddenly, things begin to come into focus and they stop paying attention to the colleagues that used to intimidate them and hold them back – the leeches and the loafers. Fears of the past are now tackled head-on.

Don’t waste time in your career by failing to contribute at your highest levels. Here are eight unexpected things that happen when you begin to fully apply yourself at work: 1. Discover New Skills When you fully apply yourself at work you begin to realize that you can do more than you ever thought possible. You discover skills that you may have never used before or even recognized. You never know what you are capable of until you start doing it. This is why you must always have a strategy for change. You must trust yourself enough to take the calculated risks that you’ve been hesitant to take in the past. Stop focusing on being what others want you to be; when you have faith in yourself and listen to your gut, there’s no telling what skills you are capable of unleashing.

When you keep moving forward – regardless of the outcomes — you begin to discover more about yourself and your aptitudes; this is how you make work enjoyable again and free yourself from the burden of growing complacent.

2. See Opportunities More Clearly When you put everything you’ve got into your work, you begin to see opportunities previously unseen by creating an elevated awareness of your surroundings. As you see and understand the dynamics of the workplace more clearly, the cloud that has been cast over you will no longer hold you back, pull you down or distract your thinking. When it’s no longer there, you can begin to develop greater attention to detail and strategic focus.

3. Learn to Navigate the Workplace I’m often asked how to anticipate workplace dynamics. My usual response is that you must be active enough in your work to know the players, personalities and politics in order to understand the real expectations for the corporate environment you serve. In order words, if you are not actively participating in the game, you’ll never understand how to play the game.

You must stop hesitating and start activating.

Practice makes perfect and when you fully apply yourself to your work, you begin to connect the dots and learn how to navigate the workplace to get things done. Over time, your entrepreneurial attitude takes root and your influence begins to grow.

The more risks you take, the more the fear of uncertainty begins to wane. When you see things more clearly, you begin to understand what resources are required for you to do your job more effectively and contribute more abundantly.

When employees don’t know how to manage resources – their relationships, tools, intelligence, teams, etc. It’s difficult to get the job done. When you fully apply yourself, you begin to realize that your success and your ability to sustain the momentum that you create depends on your ability to find the right resources and manage them well. Recognizing that resource management is a critical success factor, you become more mindful of identifying the right resources, perhaps even collecting a playbook of the resources required to fulfill your designated responsibilities and produce the desired outcomes.

5. Network Grows; Relevancy Rises As your performance improves, relationships elevate. You unexpectedly begin to attract the interest of more colleagues (especially those that never gravitated towards you before). You begin to matter more to the organization that you serve, people want to become associated with you and your relevancy rises.

As you become more important to your team and your organization, you begin to realize the importance of applying yourself even more as responsibilities and expectations increase and you rise to the occasion.

6. Value Yourself As you fully apply yourself at work, your ability to influence growth and innovation heightens. If you remain consistent, you begin to see more opportunities and the impact you are creating; over time your confidence grows and you truly begin to value yourself more than ever before. You begin to notice your ability to influence outcomes both directly (as you lead an assignment) and indirectly (as part of a team). The positive attitude that you bring to work becomes infectious and inspires those around you.

When you begin to value yourself, you start to trust yourself more – and soon realize the return on investment from utilizing the skill-sets and capabilities that you weren’t using before you learned to fully apply yourself.

7. Learn to Reinvent Yourself Your new understanding of what happens when you fully apply yourself gives you the insight, wisdom and courage to continually test your ideas and ideals. You’ll never know what it means to discover your full potential until you trust yourself enough to put your true talent to the test.

Sustaining workplace momentum requires the continuous renewal and reinvention of your skill-sets and capabilities. Now that you see the rewards associated with delivering your full talent at work, your eyes are opened to the value of investing in yourself more intently and continually introducing new aptitudes, roles and responsibilities.

8. Build A Reputation The first seven things have now elevated the expectation of who you are and what you represent as an employee. You must now continue to step-up your game because your colleagues expect more from you as your reputation rises.

What took you time to discover can be lost in a moment’s notice if you don’t continue to deliver upon it consistently. Your responsibility is not only to build upon the momentum you created, but to elevate your reputation by serving as a role model and mentor to others.

Your reputation management platform must be viewed as a portfolio of assets that you now have the confidence to fully build upon each day. You must now be more accountable than ever to assure that the value of those assets grows and that you continue to diversify your portfolio as you elevate your reputation not only for yourself – but for the betterment of the organization and the people you serve.

Fully applying yourself at work is reward in itself, but as you can see there are many perks as well. You will discover skills you never knew you had, realize the value of the unique aptitudes you do possess, and learn how and where you best fit in – all while making work fun again.

HOW TO ACCEPT

CRITISM

WHILE AT WORK 1. Accept that you are not perfect. If you begin each task thinking that nothing will go wrong, you’re fooling yourself. The important thing is to learn from them.

2. Double check your work. This can help you to avoid silly mistakes and ensure that your boss won’t have to bother you about minor problems.

3. Don’t take it personally. If your co-worker has criticism for you, remind yourself that it doesn’t necessarily mean she/he doesn’t like you, or that you’re not good enough for the job.

4. Listen carefully. If you ignore critical comments, you’re doomed to repeat the same mistakes. Take notes and continually remind yourself how to fix the problem.

7. Analyze and evaluate what you’ve heard. You need time to process the information, determine if it’s a valid criticism and decide what you’ll do to solve the problem or correct the mistake.

8. Don’t hold a grudge. Staying angry/upset about criticism can affect your future work. Put the mistakes out of your mind and focus on doing the best job possible on the next task.

9. Remember, anything that happens is for a reason. If a certain co-worker isn’t being very warm to you, or your boss just named a suck-up the employee of the month, then this usually means that it’s a good thing, because something much better will be in store for you. No good acts of hard work or patience go unrewarded.

10. Clear the air. If you’re upset with how your co-worker criticized you, let him or her know as soon as possible, so there are no lingering bad feelings between the two of you. Explain why it upset you, and suggest changes that could be made to strengthen your relationship.

5. Ask yourself what you can learn from this criticism. If you feel yourself growing defensive or getting angry, repeat the question ‘What can I learn?’

11. Accept the fact that others may see something that you don’t. Even if you don’t agree with the criticism, others may be seeing something that you are not even aware of. If they say that you are negative or overbearing, and you don’t feel that you are, well; maybe you are and you just don’t see it. Allow for the fact that others may be right, and use that possibility to look within yourself.

6. Agree with part of the criticism. When you agree with one part of the criticism, you become open to learning.

12. Be happy whatever the criticism and do not let the criticism bring you down.

OFFICE ETIQUETTE

1. Don’t be too loud. Be mindful of your volume, whether you are talking to a colleague or on the phone. You don’t want to invade anyone’s personal space.

2. Don’t interrupt your colleagues. When you are in meetings or even simply talking to a colleague in the hall, be mindful of who is talking.

You don’t want to be disrespectful.

3. Be mindful of office chatter. It is great to work in an office where you also can make friends, but keep chatter to a minimum. You’ll know if you have gone on too long when a colleague has to walk with you to continue the conversation.

4. Don’t eat smelly food. Tuna, spicy food-eating smelly food can be really offensive, especially in an office with an open floor plan. Save the curry for home.

5. Hold back on the perfume. To the same point, be mindful of how much perfume that you wear at the office. Some people could be allergic.

6. Office correspondence should be formal. Think of email somewhat like a formal letter. In other words, don’t use slang or abbreviations.

Also, bear in mind that many companies actually store their employee’s emails for years, and access them from time to time to check up on their employees.

7. Share the credit. It is just good office etiquette to know when to share the credit with others. You’ll come off as a team player, and more importantly, the act of good will is likely to be repaid in spades.

8. Dress for the office that you work in. Plan your office wardrobe to fit with the tone of your office. Look to your bosses for inspiration as to what is appropriate.

9. Keep your phone on silent. Your ring tone can potentially be distracting, so it’s best to keep your phone on vibrate.

10. Keep the office clean. Throw your trash out on your desk, don’t keep items in the communal refrigerator too long, and be mindful if you are sharing a bathroom too.

11. Don’t share too much personal information with colleagues. There are a few reasons why this isn’t so good-it can leave you vulnerable and also there is such a thing as TMI, especially in an office environment.

12. Be on time. Being punctual says a lot about your personal values. You want to send the message to your colleagues that you care.

13. Don’t take long personal calls at your desk. It is perfectly fine to take a personal call at your desk occasionally, but keep it short so you don’t disturb everyone around you. Take the call outside on your cell phone if necessary.

14. Don’t play with your hair during a meeting. Refrain from playing with your hair, especially in meetings. You should also refrain from brushing your hair or applying makeup at your desk.

15. Don’t come to work if you’re too sick. If you are contagious, stay home for the good of the office. Show your diligence by being available online for as much of the day as possible. That being said, if you just have the sniffles, you should probably come into work.

Nissan Develops The Worlds First Self-Cleaning Car Japanese giant Nissan has developed the world’s first ‘self-cleaning car’ which it predicts will make car-washing ‘obsolete’ For drivers who would rather run a mile than wipe down their dirty vehicles with a sponge or wince at the high cost of a car-wash, it means salvation may soon be at hand.

Nissan says it is the first carmaker to apply the trade-marked technology called Ultra-Ever Dry® on automotive bodywork. This will work by creating a protective layer of air between the paint and environment; it effectively stops standing water and road spray from creating dirty marks on the car’s surface.

The Note already features a ‘wash and blow dry’ function on its rear view camera. This uses water and compressed air to automatically keep the lens free of dirt and ensure the Notes’ safety sensors work in all conditions.

The coating has responded well to common use cases including rain, spray, frost, sleet and standing water.

BOMB ATTACK

Recently Kenya has seen bad times in the light of bomb attacks and other gun-related attacks. The attacks have been targeted at innocent Kenyans making security a key issue for all of us. Key questions linger in our minds, What if I am attacked? In the event of an attack, what should I do? Always; Be wary of your surroundings. Look out for suspicious people, unattended vehicles, bags, parcels or suitcases etc.

In the event that an explosion goes off, and you are caught up in the confusion; • Leave the area immediately.

• Avoid crowds. Crowds of people may be targeted for a second attack.

• Avoid unattended cars and trucks. Unattended cars and trucks may contain explosives.

• Stay away from damaged buildings to avoid falling glass and bricks. Move at least 200 metres away from damaged buildings.

• Follow directions from people in authority (police, fire, military personnel, or workplace supervisors).

• Call for help once you are in a safe area, but only if police, fire and emergency services has not arrived.

• Help others who are hurt or need assistance to leave the area if you are able. If you see someone who is seriously injured, seek help.

Do not try to manage the situation alone.
