MEET THE TEAM TRAINERS

WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY AT CCF SA LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

A normal day at CCF SA is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards helping learners achieve their goals. At times, training can be equally challenging and rewarding, but the thing I love most about my job is the appreciation and respect I get from learners when they successfully complete their training.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE THAT YOU WILL BE FACING IN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?

The biggest challenge I am likely to face in the next 12 months is adapting to the new training model for Work Zone Traffic Management (WZTM) when it is announced by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).

WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO?

I look up to all the Trainers in our group, for the support that they give both me MATT HISKEY and each other, their collective knowledge and experience, and their high standards in training delivery and curriculum development. WHAT DID YOUR 8-YEAR-OLD SELF LOVE DOING? Honestly, I loved watching traffic, especially trucks. I also liked driving matchbox cars and building Lego. WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND? I love camping, primarily in national parks, four-wheel driving, and spending time with my family. The part of my job I love the most would have to be the satisfaction from seeing a student learn new skills and apprentices grow into young leaders.

WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY AT CCF SA LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I like to get in at least 30 minutes early on the days I am training to ensure the training room I am using is clean, set up and make sure the computer/projector is working correctly.

DANIELE CARDELLINI From that point, I deliver the content of my course contextualised to the learners’ requirements if possible, in both verbal and practical applications. On the days I am not training, I am organising the schedule to ensure utilisation of the trainer group, answering questions the administration team have about courses, possible courses, training requirements, trainer availability, etc. and managing the 200-250 Certificate 3 apprentices. I have also been spearheading the curriculum development of the new assessment resources. The part of my job I love the most would have to be the satisfaction from seeing a student learn new skills and apprentices grow into young leaders.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE THAT YOU WILL BE FACING IN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?

Growing into my role and expanding my skill set. Also, I became a dad recently for the first time so am learning to do that.

WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO?

As a young fella, I always looked up to sporting stars for the way in which they applied themselves in that sport ie Francesco Totti in soccer, Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath in cricket, and Marat Safin and Pete Sampras in tennis. As of now, I don’t think I look up to anyone in particular. I try to look at what I consider as the best qualities from all the people close to me, and try to emulate them for myself.

WHAT DID YOUR 8-YEAR-OLD SELF LOVE DOING?

At that time, it was likely playing soccer or probably any sport really. This continues and has mainly progressed into playing soccer (winter), tennis (all year) and cricket (summer). My poor mother.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?

These days, it’s a combination of playing golf, sitting on the couch and watching TV (mainly sport), or playing board games and the like with mates.

WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY AT CCF SA LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I guess even what we would call a ‘normal day’ can sometimes be somewhat challenging at times.

Mostly, I enjoy the interaction from the learners of all levels, exchanging information and ideas on innovations, developments in industry, tech and equipment areas.

I think it is so important to share information as much as possible for general knowledge, (for everyone). As the world and requirements change, it’s so hard for all of us to keep up with Industry standards and expectations.

When we have the opportunity to all ‘get together’ in training, it allows us to exchange this information with everyone so all involved can benefit! This is so important for our industry!

To see some learners start from first level certs to being some of the industry leading supervisors in the past 10 years to me, the results speak for themselves.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE THAT YOU WILL BE FACING IN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?

The biggest challenge I think I may find in the next 6–12 months is completing Cert IV WHS. This will be the beginning for the start of a WHS Diploma. As most of us work full-time and have kids, we’re pressed for time, so this will be challenging to say the least.

WHO DO YOU LOOK UP TO?

I don’t know if I can say I look up to an individual on their own… I look to many people in my life for different reasons, for information, advise or help, a lot of the time.

Depending on the advice and/or help I need, will decide who I turn to or who to ask help from. I guess I’m extremely lucky and thankful to know so many people, not only personally but also at a professional level in my life, some of whom I work with every day.

I guess the more I think about it, being able to speak to just about anyone, from any walk of life, I probably need to thank my parents in the end for setting up those fundamental skills within me and helping me develop those skills from such a young age as a country kid.

WHAT DID YOUR 8-YEAR-OLD SELF LOVE DOING?

My 8-yr-old self! Swim! Water pistols! Basketball and footy. Not forgetting the old BMX! Old school Mongoose was my choice! Everything my lad does now at that same age... And I still love it all too! Just cause I’m getting old… Doesn’t mean I have to grow up!

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?

I unwind by playing a bit of basketball or footy with the lads, quietly having a relaxing beer, and spending time with the family and good people. Holidays will be good to get away again… miss that! WHAT DOES A NORMAL DAY AT CCF SA LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AND WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I train a combination of

Cert IV and short courses so it depends on the day, but the most enjoyable part of the job is getting to meet and work with people from different sectors of civil construction. It is a great opportunity to learn about all aspects of civil and get an insight into different parts of the industry.
