How long have you been in business?

Load 28 has been in the game since 2010; yet we still treat each job as a new opportunity to learn.

Where are you located?

1196-1200 Old Port Road, Royal Park, South Australia 5013.

How did you start your business?

Load 28 crane hire, a firm started by two brothers in Adelaide, is a crane hire rental company based on 10 mobile crane, 6 mini crawler cranes, 3 tower cranes, access equipment and transport.

Founder and Operations Director Marcus Rigney explains:

In 2000, I had a dream to start a small service based business as an owner operator. After looking at transport and similar industries, I settled on a crane hire based company. After some lengthy research, I found a small 10t city crane available to purchase interstate; after some inspections I purchased the unit.

I nervously recall the crane arriving in the workshop, thinking ‘what have I done?’ I had a long road ahead to sort out licences, learn to operate the machine, find some clients and get underway.

I knew I needed help to get this underway, so I called my brother Tom (who was living interstate), who promptly agreed to come to Adelaide, and together we would work hard to build a solid business for our future.

We always knew that, if we focussed hard on safe, quality, customer focussed service delivery, we couldn’t go wrong.

Over the past 8 years, we have never stopped keeping this in the forefront of our mind and steadily we have grown, with very limited funding, to a company that operates 19 cranes and a staff level of 73 people.

About four years into crane hire, I knew we needed to find a project business, to bolt onto the crane division; a business that would provide us stability and engage our diverse strengths. We saw a niche to lift glass, and after purchasing lots of technical vacuum lifting equipment, it wasn’t long before we were lifting that much glass, we started to also install it! It was at this point that we commenced Australian Glass Install. Today, this division successfully installs over 50,000m2 of unitised curtain wall glass panels per year on a number of tier 1 projects both here in Adelaide and Melbourne.

During our growth phase, we have pushed the boundaries in the business, to continue its growth trend line.

What are your core business activities/specialties?

The Load 28 team and equipment is well recognised within the industry as specialists in limited access crane hire, structural installations, Deltacore installation, facade elements and commercial glass and glazing installation.
