GrEETings Friends of Extension!
Happy New Year! In this year’s Annual Report to the Community, we’re excited to reflect on the “constellation of connections” we’ve made this past year. Like the stars in a constellation, each one of you—our volunteers, families, farmers, youth, and community partners—has contributed a unique light to create a powerful, interconnected community here in Sullivan County.
Through every program, workshop, and event, we’ve seen relationships blossom and new connections form. From getting food to our neighbors and youth workshops to agricultural education and nutrition initiatives, we’ve experienced how individual actions and shared knowledge come together to create something larger and more impactful than we could accomplish alone. Just as stars form constellations that guide us, your contributions have been guiding forces, making our collective mission brighter and more meaningful.
Thanks to your involvement, 2024 was year of expanded reach for CCE Sullivan. We’ve been able to offer more nutrition resources, connect with more families, and create hands-on opportunities for youth and adults alike. Whether through sustainable agriculture, community health, or youth development, each program has sparked connections that extend far beyond the immediate moment. Together, we’re creating a network of shared support and knowledge, where every individual plays a vital role in our community’s well-being.
As we look forward to 2025, we are filled with hope for the road ahead. The constellation we’ve formed this year has shown the power of unity and collaboration. Moving forward, we will continue to build on these connections, adapting to meet new challenges and nurturing the sense of shared purpose that makes Sullivan County a remarkable place to live, learn, and grow.
Thank you for helping to create this legacy of connection and light at CCE Sullivan. Together, we’re building a community that shines as brightly as the stars.

SPOTLIGHT ON: COMMUNITY FORUM
The Caregiver Resource Center and CCE Sullivan hosted a community forum on April 24th, bringing together local residents, health and human service providers, and Alzheimer’s Association staff to identify needs of seniors and their caregivers, and to better understand dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. Needs identified included improving access to health care providers, transportation, home care services, caregiver support and education. Over 30 residents and staff from local senior-focused organizations attended.
“The information you provided about tips for caregiving for my elderly mom who has dementia was very helpful. Thank you.”

SPOTLIGHT ON: 4-h open house & Pumpkin Smash Event

The 4-H team, along with Sullivan County Soil and Water, held a Pumpkin Smash and Open House at CCE Sullivan in November. Youth learned about composting while having fun smashing their pumpkins after Halloween. The smashed pumpkins went into the compost bin at CCE. Youth participated in multiple crafts while learning more about 4-H. The open house was held to give the community the opportunity to learn more about all that 4-H has to offer in a friendly and welcoming way. About two dozen people attended!

testimonialS FROM 4-H PARENTS
“The value of 4-H is that it allows young people to learn by hands-on experience in science, agriculture, health and civic activities. I think 4-H develops youth to be responsible, compassionate, goal oriented, hardworking, civic minded individuals to become the leaders of tomorrow.
The 4-H pledge says it all: I pledge my head to greater thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living for my club, my community, my country, and my world.”

“The 4-H experience has taught my son responsibility, compassion, respect and the value of hard work. It helped him become confident in public speaking.
These skills have helped him to be Captain of three sport teams, complete two years as class president and give a speech at graduation. He shows responsibility in his life, from taking care of his animals, work, school, community service & family.
He started in 4H with one pet rabbit where he learned all about rabbits, grew his rabbitry and showed them at ARBA level very successfully. He knew a lot of hard work went into the fair every year, but he also had a lot of fun with his friends completing all the tasks.”

nutrition &healthy familieS

CCE Sullivan’s Nutrition and Healthy Families department includes outreach and education linked to childhood obesity; youth, family and community nutrition and physical activity; and food security. It’s inclusive of multiple programs and initiatives including Creating Healthy Schools and Communities (CHSC), Farm to School efforts including school-based nutrition education, Sullivan Fresh Farmers’ Markets and related market purchase incentive programs, and SNAP-ed nutrition education. CCE programs address certainty of availability and access to food, nutrition, and food safety.

“Mamakating has had the pleasure of working closely with Wanda Cruz for 10 years. Wanda is an exceptional professional who consistently demonstrates remarkable dedication and expertise to improve quality of life for residents. Wanda never ceases to amaze me with the vast amount of knowledge she has in many different areas. We realize Wanda has left her stamp in our town: from exercise trails, to employee wellness, to trail benches and markers, etc.”

SPOTLIGHT ON: TRAIL SAFETY ASSESSMENT

In June, CCE Sullivan teamed up with Town of Mamakating Parks and Recreation to perform an assessment of the Mamakating Fitness Trail at the Mamakating Town Park. Led by Mamakating Town Supervisor Michael Robbins, and CCE Sullivan Executive Director Colleen Monaghan, a dozen staff members from both organizations walked along the trail and provided insight on trail safety, accessibility, community connectivity and more.
SPOTLIGHT ON: cooking demos
Fresh ideas at the farmers’ market! That was the goal of the Sullivan Fresh Wellness Program Cooking Demo series, with 20 demos facilitated by CCE Sullivan at local markets in 2024. CCE Sullivan provided free recipe demonstrations, nutrition education, and sample-size tastings to customers at the Sullivan Fresh Monticello Market and the many Sullivan Fresh Mobile Market stops. Our cooking demos (pictured near right) have become very popular, as we show folks how easy and fun it can be to prepare healthy side dishes and snacks with fresh, inseason produce grown by local farmers.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Warrior kids
CCE Sullivan is proud to continue facilitating the Warrior Kids wellness program in local schools: reaching 173 students for the year! In 2024, we held 16 Warrior Kids sessions at Benjamin Cosor Elementary School in Fallsburg, Roscoe Elementary School, and Liberty Boys & Girls Club. (See photos left and right.)
Warrior Kids provides students in grades 1-4 with nutrition education, physical activities, and a simple formula to chant and follow for good health (5-2-1-almost none!).
Each lesson highlights one of the numbers from the chant: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables; 2 hours or less of screen-time daily; 1 hour of physical activity; and almost none for sugary drinks and other added sugars. The program is intended to equip kids with fun experiences, tools, and knowledge to get them excited about making healthy choices for a lifetime.

“While doing outreach at one of the local hotels, we were approached by someone who knows us and they said they can always count on us. He had recently been in a different hotel, he’s always kind of in a jam, gets into tough spots. When we saw him at a new hotel, he looked at me and we hugged each other. What he said to me was that we are the only ones that never give up on him. This necessitated a conversation about why he ends up in these conversations all the time. We talked about how when you feel like there’s not much of a purpose, and you beat yourself up, that can take control, but we said as long as you’re in the game you can win. As long as you have a hand, you’re still in the game, you can win. For us, it’s about how we support each other and he started crying a little.”

“I am grateful to work for the Sullivan Fresh mobile pantry. Instead of just being sad that people are suffering, I can do something. I get to meet inspiring people that enrich my life. Providing consistent healthy food deliveries could help some of our neighbors have one less thing to worry about so they can deal with issues they might have in order to get on a more stable, healthy path.”

The CCE Sullivan Ag & Food Systems team’s outreach and education is directed toward improvement of the local food system as a whole, from farm to table. Our programs work to cover multiple aspects of agriculture and food systems such as soil resources and soil health, crop plant genomics, field evaluation of crops, reliable production guidelines, genetic improvement of animals and animal production, economics of production and farm management, integrated pest management, healthy produce, fruit and vegetable production and storage, and facilitation of sustainable agriculture.

“There is SO much to thank CCE Sullivan for. CCE Sullivan has given us the impossible-to-quantify gift of an agricultural community to call home in Sullivan County. The Beginner Farmer Mentorship Program, run by Taylor Adam, has had a hand in ensuring the long-term sustainability of our work. Haley Collins, the Agriculture Farmland Protection & Planning Program Manager, has been an unbelievable support for our search for a forever home in Sullivan. We accessed the Catskills commercial kitchen for our famous pesto with support from Erica Lynch and Melinda Meddaugh. We are confident the ways that CCE has supported our growth will continue to manifest for years to come.”

SPOTLIGHT ON: sullivan fresh markets
Sullivan Fresh markets bring farm-fresh products to 7 locations in Sullivan County (see map above). We provide affordable, nutritious food sourced from local farms. The markets are located where options to purchase farmfresh foods are limited. We accept a range of currencies (including EBT/ SNAP) to ensure greater access to local fruits, veggies, meat, dairy, eggs, and more! This season, we had over 2,200 transactions at the markets.

Our goal is to make quality food more accessible and affordable. We empower farmers to reach more customers by purchasing produce directly from them. The farmers’ markets also provide a place for neighbors to get in touch with where their food grows and convene with friends, old and new.

Sullivan Fresh Community Cupboard serves over 650 folks every week by delivering food and prepared meals to our neighbors living in hyperrural communities and food deserts, veterans, seniors, those with limited transportation and/or varying abilities, and folks from all walks of life who need an extra hand. Our cupboard provides basic essentials, a mix of non-perishables and farm-fresh produce.
Everyone should have access to food. We offer weekly and emergency deliveries to those who are food and transportation insecure. To those with transportation, we’re always open to walk-ins during food pantry hours, Tuesdays and Fridays 9am to 12pm. We want to get food in our neighbors’ bellies and make it easy by meeting them where they’re at.

CCE Sullivan staff are engaged in the exploration of risk mitigation through the promotion of alternative energy sources for the general consumer. In addition, our outreach and education focuses on invasive species and integrated pest management. Invasives threaten the function and integrity of ecosystems, native species, and agricultural crops. Ecologically sound management of invasives and pests assists in mitigating impacts. We seek to help agricultural and home producers alike adapt to changing environments.

SPOTLIGHT ON: swales woRKshop
A swale is a type of trench that is dug on a contour, that guides water and runoff into the soil so that it does not wash out. Swales may reduce irrigation requirements, while improving overall land and soil quality and reducing the risk of flooding and washouts. On August 5th, CCE Sullivan held an on-site workshop at Unbroken Acres in Cochecton. Owner and operator of Unbroken Acres, Anna Zabirova; along with Victor Ziminsky, owner and operator of Let It Grow Landscapes, led a guided farm tour explaining examples of water management techniques (see photos of the farm and tour on this page).
