Welcome to Veterans Memorial Stadium for the Annual Dalton Defender Days Marching Band Festival. We are honored to welcome back, Dr. Frank Tracz, Kansas State University Band Director, first time welcome to Dr. Jobey Wilson, Director of Music in the Pittsburg State University Department of Music, and have Gary McCarty, owner/ operator of McCarty Band services, as our adjudicators for this year.

The 2024 Red Raven Athletic Band and Drumline are growing strong! Again, we welcome you to the Veterans Memorial Stadium for the Dalton Defender Days Marching Band Festival.

MEET THE Judges

DR. FRANK TRACZ is Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Kansas State University. He earned his B.M.E. from The Ohio State University, the M.M. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. He has public school teaching experience in Wisconsin and Ohio and has also served as Assistant Director of bands at Syracuse University and Director of bands at Morehead State University. Dr. Tracz has served as an adjudicator, clinician, speaker in various schools and conferences and has conducted All-State and Honor bands across the United States as well as in Canada, Singapore, South Africa, Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand.

He has also directly or indirectly raised over 5 million dollars for the construction of the West Stadium Band Hall.

Dr. Tracz is married to Geralyn, and has three daughters, Jessica Tracz Kelly, Kelley Tracz, and Carly Tracz Morris, and one grandson, Caden Tracz Kelly!

DR. JOBEY WILSON is an Assistant Professor of Music in the Pittsburg State University Department of Music, where he Directs the Pride of the Plains Marching Band, Pep Bands, and teaches applied Tuba, Euphonium, Trombone, and Brass Chamber Music. Dr. Wilson’s D.M.A. is from Boston University, Massachusetts, U.S.A., M.M. New England Conservatory of Music, Massachusetts, U.S.A., B.M. University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma, U.S.A.

A Boston freelance musician for 24 years, Dr. Wilson is Principal Tuba of the New Bedford, Lexington, and Atlantic Symphony Orchestras, and the Portland Brass Quintet. He is a solo recording artist for PARMA Recordings and a clinician for the Eastman Music Company. Wilson was a founding member of the Triton Brass Quintet which won silver medals at the 2003 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition and the 2005 Lyon (France) International Chamber Music Competition. He is often called to perform with groups such as the Boston Pops, Boston Ballet, Portland Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and many others. Wilson served as Director of Athletic Bands at Bentley University and also taught at Boston College, the University of Southern Maine, and UMASSBoston. After teaching numerous summers at Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute, the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar, and Boston Youth Symphony Camp, he founded the Camp Jobey Summer Brass Institutes in 2012 www.campjobeybrass.com.

GARY McCARTY spent his high school years marching in Drum & Bugle Corps in Illinois. After college, where he was Drumline Leader for the Marching Jayhawks, he was a school Band Director for 31 years in Kansas and Missouri, and later worked for several years as the school music representative for a music store in Emporia, KS. While in Emporia, he was the Director of the Emporia Municipal Band for 23 years. Active in the Kansas Bandmasters Association and Kansas Music Educators Association, he held several offices. Since “retiring” to Bella Vista, Arkansas, he is the owner/operator of McCarty Band Services and writes drill for several HS marching bands in Kansas and Missouri, including Shawnee Mission West, Paola, Tonganoxie, and Independence, KS high schools.
