Welcome to the 14th issue of The Hub Magazine— an original Christ Community Church publication that tells stories of what God is doing in and through the lives of people at our church.

This magazine is a place where God’s mission for the church and the people he has called to fulfill that mission converge, and where events and programs are the tools and resources for real-life transformation. God is doing amazing things in lives all around the world!

In this issue, you’ll meet CCC’s “most senior pastor,” Irving Malm. Irving is ninety-eight years old and has served seventy-five years in ministry with the Christian & Missionary Alliance. His life’s lesson that “it’s all about Jesus” is one we can all use reminding of.

Almost two years ago, our church began a new generosity initiative called Beyond Belief. God has moved in amazing ways beyond ourselves, beyond our walls, and beyond our borders.

Lead Minister Mark Ashton shares an update.

Shon Hopwood's story of robbing a bank, serving time in prison, studying law to help fellow inmates, and finding hope in Jesus is one you don’t want to miss. Shon will be at CCC on Sunday, December 1.

Finally, Jim and Rosie Schuman, our Lighthouse leaders serving in Village One, share an update about their life. Lighthouses are homes in North Omaha that CCC and Bridge Church partner to renovate and send leaders to live in to serve in the neighborhoods.

It’s All About Jesus IRVING MALM’S STORY

“It’s all about Jesus, it’s all about Jesus, it’s all about Jesus.” Meet Irving Malm and you’ll likely hear these wise words shared with you. A humble man, Irving does not take credit for the things he has done, but always points people back to the focusing their attention on Jesus.

Christ Community Church’s Lead Minister Mark Ashton often says, “Reverend Irving Malm is our most senior pastor!” Irving is ninety-eight years old and served as the Senior Adults Pastor at CCC for twelve years. In 2018, he was honored for seventy-five years of faithful ministry with the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA). Irving is still active

at CCC and leads a worship service at Maple Ridge Retirement Community in Omaha, where he lives.

He is a humble, faithful minister of the gospel who loves Jesus with all his heart.

God has used the circumstances of Irving’s life to mold him into a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ. Irving was raised in a loving family. His parents loved each other, loved their children, but most importantly, they loved Jesus. When he was about eight years old, Irving attended a Sunday evening service at his church.

During the altar call, Irving watched as people went to the front of the room to pray. He sensed the Holy Spirit say to him, “Those people up there, they’re all

“I had such a joy. I was so happy I asked Jesus to come into my life. It’s been a great journey ever since.”

praying to Jesus. And there’s a bench there, but at the end of the bench, there’s a little room. There’s room for you up at the end of the bench.” Irving went up to the bench. A woman approached him and prayed with him. In that moment, Irving experienced a radical transformation. He shared that after he prayed, “I had such a joy. I was so happy I asked Jesus to come into my life. It’s been a great journey ever since.”

Irving attended St. Paul Bible College (now Crown College) in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he met Maye, the woman who would become his wife. When he first saw her, he thought, “Wow, she’s pretty. Some guy will be taking her out on a date pretty soon.”

They became friends, but it took him from the first week of September to Thanksgiving to ask her out on a date. Irving saw that Maye was a woman devoted to Jesus, a woman who obeyed God’s calling on her life. After Irving and Maye married, Irving registered for the draft during World War II. The military gave him a specific classification and asked him to stay in the US to provide spiritually for people on the home front. The C&MA ordained Irving as a pastor in 1943.

Over the years, Irving and Maye helped lead a church plant and worked in small churches in several towns in Minnesota.

In the fall of 1965, Irving and Maye attended a C&MA district conference. The district was so large that the

district leadership felt it was wise to multiply into two districts, which would require the election of a new district superintendent. The chairman of the nominating committee asked Irving if he was interested in being considered for the district superintendent position.

Irving and Maye spent time talking and praying over this decision. They considered that it would mean the ministry they led in Mount Lake, Minnesota, would come to an end, but concluded that surrender to God’s will for their lives was the best option. Irving shared, “It’s hard to put into words how God leads us, but he does lead us.” Irving was elected as the first superintendent of the Rocky Mountain District and then as District Superintendent for the MidAmerica District.

Later, he served as the Senior Adults Pastor at a church in Fremont and then at Christ Community Church.

While Irving worked at CCC, he also had opportunities to disciple the next generation. He recounted the story of a young CCC intern who had just received a wound from a person he trusted in ministry. Todd was hurt and confused. Irving reminded Todd that Jesus was the Good Shepherd who cares for his sheep. Years later, Irving received a letter from Todd thanking him for the example of his life and for the words of encouragement he offered during that time. Irving shared that he didn’t really remember the conversation, but that in the flow of the conversation, he had said, “Todd, it’s all about Jesus. It’s all about Jesus.”

As Irving has followed Christ over the past ninety years, he’s learned valuable lessons about surrendering his life daily to Jesus. He shared that he had to deal with the “tyranny of the urgent.” Charles E. Hummel, author of Tyranny of the Urgent, wrote “Your greatest danger is letting the urgent things crowd out the important.” Often people bring their to-do lists and their plans to God and then ask him to bless them. Irving shared that spending time with Jesus has impacted his life because it allows him to be led by the Spirit of Jesus (the Holy Spirit). While there are so many good things that can be done, Irving said, “the good can be the detractor or the hindrance of the best.”

In the eyes of men, it seems that Irving has accomplished so much during his time in ministry. But Irving shared that his life is not about making a name for himself. It is about surrendering to Jesus for his life.

UNKNOWN CALLING The elders just had a sense from the Holy Spirit. It was completely clear and totally vague at the same time. God had more for us. He wanted us to move from ordinary life to a place that was beyond belief.

There was a deeper experience of God to be had, a fuller submission to be lived, and a greater sacrifice to be given. There were people who needed to be reached in order to form a new generation of Jesus-followers who will impact not only Omaha, but the world.

There were churches not yet planted who needed godly men and women who follow God wholeheartedly and lead his people humbly. There was a new country to partner with in reaching the lost with the gospel.

At the time, the new generation had not been born, we had not met the residents, and we didn’t know which country with which we would partner.

We just knew that God was calling us

beyond ourselves, beyond our walls, and beyond our borders.

UNKNOWN COUNTRY Nearly three years later, we know a small part of what God had in mind for us. In 2016, God opened up new relationships between the U.S. and the country we've code-named “El Dorado,” making it possible for us to partner with a small group of Christian & Missionary Alliance house churches on the island nation.

Joel, the president of the C&MA movement in El Dorado, was a mid-nineties convert from atheism and communism.

Despite not owning a Bible, he began pastoring in just a few months. “I had no idea what I was doing,” he said. “I just knew I was depending on God. When CCC joined us, we had seventy-four churches. In part due to the help of Christ Community Church, we now have 104 churches with a dream to have 120 by the end of 2020. CCC is

helping us acquire property and build a building that will be our national headquarters, a seminary for pastors and our largest church all at the same time. It will be the greatest asset we have to grow our movement to the next generation.”

This is just a small slice of the international impact of Beyond Belief. The initiative in “Gold Kingdom”—our code name for a West African country in which we work—is able to grow. Over one hundred seminary students receive training to become pastors at a Bible college each year. These future church leaders in this largely unreached nation have a distinct advantage over western missionaries—they know the local culture and speak the language fluently.

At the hospital CCC helps support in Gold Kingdom, over 5,000 babies are born safely each year. The medical ministry providing care to moms and babies softens the harvest fields to be receptive to the message brought by

young pastors and through radio broadcasts every day.

CCC’s passion for the Great Commission Fund (GCF) is at an all-time high. The GCF funds six hundred missionaries in the hardest-to-reach places on earth. Our church gives just over one million dollars per year to this mission to reach the darkest corners of the planet with the good news of Jesus.

but now we know some of their names, faces, and stories. God had this planned for us in advance—we acted in faith and he showed us his people and his plan.

When the apostle Paul wrote this, he was talking about our heavenly destination, but it applies in a smaller way to our futures here on earth.

The Worship Center, Gym, and Atrium have all been renovated and are prepared for an entirely new generation to be reached with the gospel. People we have never met, or who have not even been born yet, will meet Jesus and grow in their faith in these spaces.

God has more for us. He has deeper levels of submission. He has greater levels of faith. He has amazing experiences in the Holy Spirit. He wants to save babies, save souls, and reach kids, families, and seniors.

When Beyond Belief began, we didn’t know the thirty-one residents who would invest two years serving, loving, and leading at CCC. They are young, smart, and godly. They are the Church’s current and future leaders. It is an adventure to see them grow and develop into great ministers of the gospel.

God has raised up incredible leaders who have planted two new churches.

CCC has partnered with Mission Church in Village One and Citylight Kansas City to provide new spaces for the word of God to be preached.

Over three hundred people have been baptized since Beyond Belief began. Each one desperately matters to God. We always dream about people we have never met coming to faith in Jesus,

“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived—the things God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

ON THE FUTURE

There are thousands more people to be reached in the Omaha Metro. There are many more churches to be planted.

There are more people to be baptized.

There are more missionaries to be sent.

There are more residents to be trained.

SHON HOPWOOD: FROM BANK ROBBER TO BELIEVER

I couldn’t believe it. Literally, I couldn’t believe it. I had heard a lot of stories in my offices from well-meaning people seeking attention or assistance, but this was one of the biggest. I had to call Marty to confirm the tale because it was all so improbable.

He told me that he had just gotten out of jail for robbing banks. Five of them. Shon Hopwood was his name and he appeared to be in his late twenties. He was from David City, Nebraska, a sleepy rural farm town where nothing exciting ever happened. That was exactly the problem. He was bored—not starving or deprived, but bored.

Shon had gone to college on a basketball scholarship but dropped out due to academics. He got odd jobs around town, but none of them satisfied his sense of adventure.

He and his friends cooked up plans to rob banks and live on the run. Their plan worked the first time. And the second, third, and fourth. But the fifth time, they got sloppy and eventually were caught. Shon was in his early twenties and was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison.

talked about guys who were in on small-time drug charges but got the shaft because of bad lawyers or harsh minimum sentencing laws. Shon spent his time in prison earning respect on the basketball court. He read books that were sent to him by his hometown pastor, Marty Barnhart. He developed a deep romantic pen-pal relationship with his hometown heartthrob, Ann Marie. He studied law to see if there was any way out of the bars and barbed wire.

Nobody wants to go to prison, and when you get there, it is worse than you thought. You do what it takes to survive and to get out. Shon thought his case might have a legal technicality or loophole, but the truth was that they had him dead to rights. He was guilty.

While he searched for loopholes, he found that he loved the law, especially Supreme Court law. Shon got a job in the law library and began to read voraciously.

After all, what else is there to do in prison? His bent for logic and precision served him well. At the same time, he studied about Jesus. Marty sent him books that were filled with legal-style evidence for the life and teachings of Jesus. He found them compelling and asked for more.

Sitting across from me in the office, he was totally unsuspecting. Shon was tall and athletic, built for basketball. His dark hair was parted on the side and his smile was contagious. He spoke at a slow, deliberate pace and did not seem like he was exaggerating.

He had a penchant for precision. Yet the stories were way too much.

In his legal and spiritual studies, two things became evident. The case for Jesus became clear. Dozens of prophecies pointed to him. The evidence for Jesus’ historical life, death, and resurrection were undeniable.

The empty tomb, the live appearances, the changed lives, the world movement—who could deny that Jesus was real? The case for Shon’s imprisonment also was clear. There were no loopholes or technicalities.

I listened for a long time and asked what was likely too many questions. He told me stories of being in prison with guys who were tough criminals. He also

circumstances and incompetent representation had landed him in a federal prison in Illinois. It put Shon’s passion on high. He went to the library and immersed himself in constitutional law. He had to know it inside and out. Shon believed that his friend’s conviction was a violation of the constitution.

Not only did Shon learn the subtleties of the constitution, he learned the precedents of related law and how to write a Supreme Court brief. If he was going to try to advocate for a fellow cellmate from his prison cell, every term had to be used properly.

The format had to be exacting. He used a typewriter because no computers were available. He prayed to Jesus because he knew that an average of 7000–8000 briefs would be sent to the United States Supreme Court in a term, and only eighty would be accepted. Almost all of them would be composed by trained lawyers specializing in Supreme Court law. His argument was subtle but sensible.

After reviewing every possible detail, he typed it and sent it. Oh, the audacity! Even if it never made it past a law clerk, at least it helped pass the time in prison.

For months he waited. One day, when he was headed to the recreation yard, a friend of his came screaming out of the housing unit carrying a newspaper. The friend had a copy of USA Today stating that John’s case had been granted by the U.S. Supreme Court and how unlikely that was given John had filed without a lawyer.

Shon could not advocate from prison and truth be told, it was a horrible

idea. Seth Waxman, an experienced veteran of the court, took over the case on the condition that he would have full access to consult with Shon Hopwood. After all, Shon knew the case backward and forward. He knew the law. He was a critical piece. And so, Shon got a mentor.

The case was argued and Seth won unanimously! John was released early and Shon had a deep sense of gratitude and accomplishment.

The story becomes even more fantastic, because lightning struck twice.

Another cellmate, another constitutional issue, another brief, another win. From prison, Shon had not one, but two Supreme Court briefs approved and cases won!

Shon was released from prison early and had to live in Omaha while on supervised release. When I met him at Christ Community Church, he was looking for a job. He had just discovered that there were three cities in all of the United States that have publishers who formally prepare Supreme Court briefs. Omaha is one of the three. Shon applied for an administrative role in copying and binding documents. As an ex-con and former bank robber, he was happy with any job. Imagine the surprise of the employer when Shon told his story. He had to check references on this one! After confirming with Seth Waxman, Shon was hired to consult with lawyers about their briefs.

It was an incredible joy to see Shon and his new bride Ann Marie grow in their faith at Christ Community Church. For three years, they stayed in town, loved each other,

had children (their oldest named Mark!), and grew in their faith.

When Shon finished his supervised release, he dreamt of specializing in constitutional law at law school.

While an ex-con is not allowed to try a case before the Supreme Court, Shon hoped he could find a niche somewhere.

I remember when the big moment came: “Against all odds, I got in!” he said. “And they gave me a big, fat scholarship! I am going to the University of Washington. Thanks so much for your investment in me.

M

ost of us would probably agree that it’s often much easier to give than receive. No one enjoys admitting weakness. But Jim and Rosie Schuman, Lighthouse leaders in the Village One neighborhood of North Omaha, have long proclaimed the power of transparency. When Jim recently received a devastating cancer diagnosis with a forty percent survival rate, they felt called to demonstrate their convictions in a very personal way.

“I’ve never been the type of guy to ask for help,” Jim said. “I would rather injure myself than ask for help.”

Both he and Rosie have spent their lives serving others.

Serving as a Lighthouse Leader with Bridge Church, in partnership with CCC, has given Jim and Rosie daily opportunities to serve their neighbors. On Sunday mornings, Rosie looks for the person with whom God wants her to connect. Meanwhile, Jim “holds church on the sidewalk,” as Rosie puts it, with those who are too anxious to come inside.

The man who has sacrificed for others is now learning the joy of receiving through his struggles. That lesson hasn’t come easily. “It’s very humbling to be in the hospital, to have to get sponge baths and have help to get out of bed,” he said. Jim has had to relinquish control in many areas, but Christ has used his experiences to broaden his perspective. “I know what it feels like, the joy I receive, when I’m able to help someone. But it’s taken my cancer diagnosis to help me see that other people get joy from serving as well.”

One person in particular, a kid who lives next door, came to mind. He’s in seventh grade and has started coming over every day to walk the dogs. “We had a good talk, the other day,” Jim said. “He’d noticed how different I am physically. I’ve lost fifty pounds. The kid said, ‘You’re sick, huh?’ and I told him I had cancer. His face showed he realized this was a big deal and we had a nice talk about what it’s like to be sick and go to the hospital and have doctors that are giving strong medicine to help with that. It was nice that we’d built up a relationship before so that when there are real, scary sorts of adult things, we can talk in a healthy way.” Equally important, by allowing this youth to help, Jim and Rosie gave him a sense of significance, of impact.

“He realizes he’s doing something very important for us,” Jim said.

“There’s an important backstory to our lighthouses,” Rosie said, and went on to tell about a little girl who was found wrapped in plastic. “That was six years ago. She was four years old and had frozen to death. The woman caring for her had hid her in the basement.

That was in Village One,” where Rosie and Jim live. “It was hard to go to her funeral and know she was our neighbor. The woman taking care of her, sort of like a foster mom, knew the baby was in trouble but didn’t call anyone because she had a warrant and was afraid she’d get in trouble. So she got her Bible out, prayed, and didn’t tell anyone. This mom knew there was a church down the street but didn’t reach out to the help God had surrounded her with. It was isolation that took that baby’s life, because the mom was living in fear. Isolation keeps some members of the community in the grips of darkness.”

Jim and Rosie hope that through sharing their struggles, others will find courage to do the same. Through this, they’ve experienced such an outpouring of God’s love, displayed through his children. “It’s been amazing to see people that I haven’t talked to for a long time or thought of step up and reach out,” Jim said. “That’s a God thing that’s shown me that we’re better together.”

The memory of that child compelled Jim and Rosie to share what they are going through and to invite others to petition God on their behalf. “Prayer is the most powerful thing that can change the trajectory of everything,” Rosie said. “But you have to tell others what’s going on, ask for prayer, for help, for God’s army, his warriors, to rally

Sunday Morning Children join a group of kids their age or grade level. Kids birth through preschool may stay for two services, while students kindergarten through grade 5 attend one service only. This fosters relationships with other kids and allows them to attend worship with parents during the other hour.

Awana / Sparks (Grades K–2) Sparks meet in small groups to focus on Scripture memorization. In large group, they experience upbeat music, Bible teaching and instruction, and age-appropriate games.

Boys & Girls Clubs (Grades 3–5) Kids gather in small groups where life-long friendships can begin.

A club meeting is divided into three segments: Bible teaching, ageappropriate crafts or team games, and small group time. Each Bible lesson is accompanied by a Scripture memory verse.
