appy spring! Can you believe how fast time flies? The grass is turning green, flowers are blooming, the days are warmer and longer—it’s one of the most beautiful times of the year!

Hopefully, you were able to join us for one of our Easter worship experiences. If you didn’t get a chance, you can watch the entire service or just the message at cccomaha.org/messages. Our theme this year was No Other Name. We believe with all our hearts that hope and salvation can only be found

in one name—Jesus! It’s the central theme to why we exist as a church. Jesus is the hope for your life!

Our goal for this magazine is that with every issue, we are telling the story of what God is doing in and through the lives of people at Christ Community Church. So as you flip through these pages, we hope that you’ll catch just a small glimpse of the bigger story.

NO OTHER NAME.

No other name has formed governments, influenced leaders, and shaped culture like the name of Jesus. No other name has inspired as many artists, composers, and writers throughout history as the name of Jesus. You can’t walk through the Louvre or Library of Congress without seeing the fingerprints of Jesus stamped throughout. You can’t visit a hospital or step foot onto many of the world’s finest universities without seeing the marks of Jesus and his followers in the halls. You could say the name of Jesus has not only inspired history—it has defined it.

Unfortunately, there have been many who have taken this beautiful and precious name and twisted or tainted it for selfish gain. As a result, the name of Jesus has become a source of pain, suffering, and disbelief for some people. Some have waged war in the name of Jesus. Others have wielded the yoke of slavery in the name of Jesus.

Many have hurled insults, labeled people, and cast judgment—all in the name of Jesus. Because of these acts, we find ourselves in a time of history where there is much confusion about who Jesus really was and is. Since the Jesus of the gospels doesn’t appear to line up with the Jesus they’ve seen portrayed in history and in the lives of those around them, many people have decided to give up on him altogether.

In fact, this reality is manifesting itself in the next generation. As Generation Z (born between 1999–2015) emerges into young adulthood, they are more confused and disillusioned with Jesus and Christianity than previous generations. According to the Barna Group, Gen Z “are the first truly ‘post-Christian’ generation. More than any other generation before them, Gen Z does not assert a religious identity.” As a result of this, Barna states, “The percentage of Gen Z that identifies as atheist is double that of the U.S. adult population.”* So where do we go from here? Well, if we want to reverse the post-Christian trend and redeem the perception of the name of Jesus, we must first be reminded of what the name of Jesus truly is and what it represents.

WHAT’S IN A NAME? When a name is used frequently, it’s easy to overlook its true meaning. Such is the case with Jesus, perhaps more so than with any other name.

The name “Jesus” is actually the Greek representation (Iesous) of the Hebrew name Yeshua, which in English is Joshua. In Hebrew, Yeshua literally means, “The Lord Saves.” In ancient Judaism, there was great significance to the name given to you by your parents. A name didn’t merely identify a person, but told a story of who the person was.

Names often communicated a blessing or a curse and were a proclamation of a person’s destiny. In Matthew 1:21, when we read what the angel said to Joseph, that “She (Mary) will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus (Yeshua), for he will save his people from their sins,” we see how from his very birth, Jesus was destined to be the Savior and Messiah. Just as Joshua would lead the Israelites into the promised land, Jesus would lead those who would choose to follow him into eternal life with God the Father. He did this by living the perfect life, performing divine miracles, dying a painful death on the cross, and then rising from the grave three days later. How Jesus lived on earth gave his name credibility.

Matthew 1:21 wasn’t an empty proclamation, but it was prophetic fulfillment! His name wasn’t a cheesy bumper sticker, it was absolute truth: Yeshua, “The Lord saves.”

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? So again, where do we go from here? If there is salvation and hope in the name of Jesus, how does that translate to a world that’s confused and often apathetic to it? The answer lies in those who carry and communicate the name of Jesus—you and me.

In Philippians 2:5–8, Paul tells believers to “have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”

When we follow and imitate the ways of Jesus (love, humility, kindness, self-sacrifice), we show people what the name of Jesus is really all about.

We demonstrate how Jesus gave up everything and endured death, even death on a cross, for the salvation of mankind. When the world sees us, may they see Jesus in us and through us. When the world hears us, may they hear the promises of Jesus ring true for their own lives. When this begins to happen more and more, we’ll see generational trends begin to reverse. Those with misguided ideas of who Jesus was and is will start to see him as he truly is: Lord and Savior.

Ultimately, the promise Paul gave next in Philippians 2 will become more evident in our world and in our lives: “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9–11). § Joe Jensen is the Executive Pastor of Discipleship Ministries at Christ Community Church.

enna Drucker and Stefanny Herdle Zapata are CCC’s Care and Counseling Residents. Since August 2017, Jenna and Stefanny have been taking classes through Crown College while working alongside CCC’s counseling staff. The Residency program allows them to develop their talents and skills so they are prepared to serve people walking through difficult life circumstances.

The Care Network at CCC is a multi-faceted approach to helping people grow and heal from traumas they have experienced. Some traumas are small, some are large, but everyone who has experienced something painful needs to be able to heal from the trauma and grow through it. Jenna and Stefanny both were impressed by the size of the ministry at CCC. “Most churches,” Jenna said, “don’t have a care ministry this large, if at all.”

The Care Network includes Spiritual Formation, Renewal Groups, Jail Ministry, healing prayer, pastoral counseling, Stephen Ministry, Silver Tsunami, and CityCare Counseling.

Each department specializes in something different, yet all focus on providing hope and healing through relationship with Jesus Christ.

After Jenna and Stefanny began residency at CCC, Counseling Pastor

Marc Montanye encouraged them to begin studying the effects of anxiety on people. Their research showed that young women are struggling with high rates of anxiety. Through that research, Jenna and Stefanny decided to form a small group for high school and college-age women focused on finding healing from anxiety through community with others. This group, called Encountering the Prince of Peace, launched December 2017. Both women shared that they have dealt with anxiety in their own lives and in the lives of their families. Out of their experiences comes a desire to help others. Stefanny explained that anxiety attacks a person's identity—I’m not good enough or smart enough, I’m not valuable because I don’t make enough money or have the right job. Recovering from this attack on one’s identity sounds difficult or impossible, but there is hope! A great first step in combating anxiety is finding community with other believers.

Community is essential to recovering from anxiety and other traumas people experience. Jenna shared, “True community says, ‘I accept you for all of who you are, and I’m willing to walk through difficult life circumstances with you.’” Through community, people can battle the

lies of the enemy and replace them with the truth of God. When one is suffering through anxiety, others can provide encouragement and hope.

Jenna and Stefanny desire to bring hope and the love of Jesus through this class for young women.

They both recognize that their role in care and counseling ministry is to point people to God, the Great Physician. Encountering the Prince of Peace brings true healing to a worried, hurried spirit. § Rachel Bebee is the Project Coordinator for the Creative/Communications Team at Christ Community Church.

H O P E F O R T H E H O P EL E SS Recently, Ian Willsey sat down with Christ Community Church’s Pastor of Spiritual Formation Wendell Nelson. Wendell has been with CityCare Counseling since the beginning and plays a vital role in the development and support of the staff, both at CityCare and at Christ Community Church.

WHEN DID YOU START DREAMING ABOUT CITYCARE? WHEN DID CITYCARE BEGIN? In the early 1990s, Virg Ediger started training CCC people in pastoral counseling and healing prayer.

Through that ministry, we began seeing transformation in people’s lives—freedom from sin and relationships and marriages restored.

CCC Renewal Groups also began during that time.

In 2014, CCC invited Dr. James Connelly to join CCC as the Pastor of Counseling to help train our lay leaders so we could give higher levels of care for the broken. A month after being here, he had a dream that CCC would start a counseling center in the building now known as The Porch.

He was passionate about this dream and shared the idea with CCC leadership. Twice CCC had tried to buy that building but had been unable to do so. After years of thinking we would never be able to purchase the building, the owners approached us with an offer to sell. We needed $1.7 million to purchase and had to close within thirty days. We were able to do so and paid off the entire amount in one year, while starting CityCare.

WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR CITYCARE COUNSELING? I really believe God dwells around pain and prayer. In order to see God work in transformational ways, we must develop environments around pain so those who are hurting can experience transformation in their lives. I also believe evil is gaining a greater grip on our society, and a growing percentage of people see the church as irrelevant. CityCare and our Care Network are a means for CCC to engage in the ministry of Jesus to give credibility to the message of Jesus that we proclaim.

A core part of the good news is that Jesus came to bind up the broken-hearted, set the captives free, and bring peace and wholeness to the broken. Jesus placed us here to be his hands and feet with the people around us.

WHAT’S THE VISION FOR CITYCARE? We have several priorities that we believe God wants us to pursue. Our priorities are to become the go-to

place for counseling for people within Old Mill, to integrate CityCare into the larger care network at Christ Community Church, to develop future counselors, and to provide greater supervision to our counselors.

HOW HAS CITYCARE EVOLVED? CityCare started with just a few counselors and increased to twenty-four.

We also had one person supervising counselors and now have five people who supervise. CityCare counselors have a high level of training in a wide range of evidence-based therapeutic models. Our counselors are learners and want more counseling certifications. Because of this, our quality of counseling grows every single month.

We also have four interns at CityCare. In February 2018, our counselors provided 969 hours of sessions; 90 of those hours were conducted by our interns.

HOW CAN PEOPLE BE PRAYING FOR CITYCARE? Please join with us in praying that God would help us listen to and love people going through challenging things—anxiety, depression, fractured relationships, addictive behavior, et cetera. Pray that as we love them

hat would motivate a group of guys to voluntarily get up at 5 AM (or earlier) every Wednesday? I am not talking about having to get to work, let the dog out, or rock a screaming newborn. I suppose some may say, “To go to the gym” or “To snowplow the driveway.” However, 14

APRIL–MAY / 2018 / ISSUE 5

how many of you would say, “To meet up with a group of friends to talk about life, study the Bible, and pray together”? Would that motivate you? What if I told you that joining a group like this could help you navigate the choppy waters of relationships, parenting, career transitions, or a

health crisis? What if I told you that this space afforded you the chance to refocus and set your mind on things that truly mattered? What if a group like this became a circle of fun and trusted friends? Friends who prayed for you during the week, or listened to a struggle you were having, or invited you to grab breakfast? What if being a part of a group like this actually helped you become more of who God created you to be? Would you want to be part of it?

All of these benefits and more were quite evident as I spent time with a Journey Group of men one morning at a local Runza restaurant. The group started about five years ago when one of CCC’s pastors, Reid Brown, desired to grow as a man of God within a community of other guys. After about four years, Reid decided to hand off leadership responsibilities so that someone else in the group could develop as a leader.

The new leader, Jay, has accepted the challenge and has appreciated the opportunity to grow his leadership skills. More than anything, Reid and Jay desire for the group to be a place where men experience Christ and learn how to sharpen one another as disciples of Jesus.

I found the multi-generational dynamic of the group to be one of their greatest assets. From young professionals to retirees, all these men learned from each other and valued what each person brought to the discussion. Their careers spanned the spectrum and their interests were diverse. However, it was not variety of careers and hobbies that caught my attention during my time with them.

What I found particularly powerful was their genuine desire to become godly men. I was struck by their transparency and humility as they shared about their lives.

“We are just trying to figure out how to be godly men. I just wish I had this thirty-nine years ago when I wasn’t walking with Christ… Would’ve been nice to have a compass instead of trying to deal with it on our own. I look back now and I was such an idiot. I still fall every day… I don’t think I am the husband I need to be.”

Over and over, they expressed wanting to become more loving husbands and good fathers. One man shared, “We swap ideas with how we can love our wives in the little things, otherwise you lose track of what brought you together.” Another man reported the group inspired him to have a special dinnertime with his family of six every night. “We rate our day one to ten, the best and worst part of your day. It gets the family talking openly and honestly about their day and the kids have fun guessing the number.” A few fathers commented on the support they have received when going through difficult seasons with their adult children.

“They walked with me through a tough time with my son. It gave me comfort that others had been through it too.”

Aside from the discussions on family, one man shared how he has felt the support of the group through several of his job changes. “I think back like five years from where my career was then and now. My career has changed a lot. One constant is that I always have been able to talk about it here with people.” Another man in the group shared how the guys have helped him deal with entering retirement. “I worked thirty-six years with a bunch of people. All of a sudden you are isolated and it’s just neat to have a group of Christian guys to be with. It’s a different world once you retire.”

Every one of the guys experiences unique challenges in their lives and yet there was a posture towards seeking a godly perspective in all of it. I smiled hearing them talk about their favorite studies over the years, or meaningful Bible stories or verses.

They were guys who prayed for one another and truly wanted to help each other become stronger men of God. When our time was up, I expected them to scatter to their jobs and commitments for the day. I was wrong. Instead, someone pitched an idea for breakfast and to top it off, they invited me to come. As I sat sandwiched between the men over plates of bacon, smothered biscuits, omelets and hash browns, I thought to myself, “These guys truly enjoy one another’s company and I feel privileged to have spent this time with them.”

So how about you? Are you plugged in to any kind of small group? Are you pursuing community or have you been feeling isolated lately? God designed us for deep and meaningful spiritual friendships. He created the Church to be a family where those friendships are fostered and where generations love and learn from each other. Being a part of one may mean rolling out of bed earlier or staying out later. However, as I was so profoundly reminded of that morning in Runza, “If a man is hungry, he will find a way to eat.” § Lisa Ashton is the Assistant Director of Adult Discipleship at Christ Community Church.
