First Trinity Preschool Celebrates 50 Years

By Kathy Reandeau

Because of the separation between church and state very few children learn about religion in school these days. Most institutions draw a fine line between education and talking about God, even to the point of debating whether the Pledge of Allegiance is appropriate. Fortunately that is not the case at First Trinity Preschool. The preschool is part of the church’s mission and has established itself as a place where children and families can be touched with the love and grace of God through Jesus Christ and where their faith can be nurtured. They must be doing something right because First Trinity just celebrated its 50th anniversary of transforming our world, one life at a time, through the power of God’s living Word. The preschool began in 1962 as a vision of Rev. John Panning and the Board of Parish Education, who realized that parents wanted a

place for their children to receive play, nurturing and guidance from Christiantrained teachers. Classes were taught in the basement of the chapel, with tuition of $40 per semester and a teacher’s pay of $5 per day. Original teachers included director Maxine Ehrman and Clara Lou Fromm. Before the concept of pre-school was even popular, First Trinity decided theirs would run on a non-sectarian, non-ra-

cial, non-profit basis, welcoming children from throughout the community. I met with the current director, Debbie Ferrante, who has been with the school for about ten years. Debbie felt strongly that this was God’s calling for her and feels His hand is in this place. She spoke about the school’s focus on preparing children to be successful in kindergarten, helping them learn how to care for each other, and teaching them about the love of God. To this day, the school continues to practice educationally sound and developmentally appropriate principles to foster spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth. There are three head teachers and six assistants who help with the classes. Their goal is to plant the seeds of faith in the hearts of these young children and make a difference in their spiritual life. They work to teach children to respect Continued on page 4

Twin Cities Community Outreach (TCCO) Twin Cities Community Outreach (TCCO) is a “three in one “ organization. TCCO serves both the City of North Tonawanda and the City of Tonawanda. Friends of TCCO pronounce its acronym as “taco”. Founded in 1984 TCCO brought together the North Tonawanda Interchurch Food Pantry, NT Clothes Closet, and North Tonawanda Meals on Wheels in one place. The TCCO building at 100 Ridge Road, North Tonawanda is owned by the non-profit agency. The maintenance and utilities for the groups are paid by TCCO. Without TCCO, the three agencies would not be able to operate. In 1991, the former Twin Cities Ice Rink building at 100 Ridge Road, North Tonawanda became available. After a year of hard work, the building was cleaned and renovated enough to be habitable for the three agencies. Because only part of the 63,000 square foot building was used by the three agencies, the unused half has since been turned into a bus garage and repair shop for the North Tonawanda city schools. With the School District’s help, other renovations were accomplished to further complete the new facilities. Offices, work and storage areas, restrooms and various other necessary repairs made the facilities comfortable, warm and clean. Funding for TCCO comes from both communities. Support comes from individual donations, business gifts, help from corporations, churches, clubs, civic groups, and other organizations which provide financial assistance. TCCO will be holding their fourth annual “Basket Bonanza” on Sunday, October 7 at Sikora Post American Legion Hall, 950 Payne Avenue, in North

Tonawanda. Sale of tickets and previewing of the baskets will be from noon to 3:00 pm. Drawings begin at 3:00 PM. You need not be present to win Proceeds from this theme tray auction will benefit TCCO and its three agencies. If you or your company would like to donate gift certificates, merchandise, basket items, or make monetary donations contact Bobbe Seekins (692-9726) or Linda Finiki (6921191) or contact the TCCO office (693-6010). Members of the TCCO Board of Directors presently include: Barry Donner, Barbara Elbers, Linda Finiki, Bill Giambelluca, Cathy Kern, Rebecca Lennox, and Joyce Santiago. Officers of the Board are : William Welch (President), Daniel Brick (Vice President), Roseann Lureman (Secretary), and Roberta Seekins (Treasurer). TCCO remains the “umbrella agency” for the three non-profit groups today. Financial Matter$ Rebuilding after Financial Transition

When everything you know has been changed by the loss of financial support due to divorce, loss of loved one, or disability, you need someone to guide you through the process of rebuilding your financial future. Contrary to popular belief, sometimes, life does give you a “do-over.” But the key to a “do-over,” is to do it over the right way. No matter what your stage in life, there are simple steps you need to follow to plan your financial future. Adrienne Rothstein Grace CFP®, CLTC, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst ( CDFA™), can take the financial pitfalls out of this emotional and challenging time by offering valuable insight and practical solutions her years of practice have developed. Adrienne is your “do over” financial planner. With a few easy steps you can be back in control of your financial future. Step One: REVIEW Organize and value your assets. Prepare a Statement of Net Worth and prioritize your goals.

Step three: ANALYZE Understand and analyze your liabilities, while also understanding your future earning potential. Create “compare and contrast” scenarios to understand how one change could affect other things. Step Four: REBUILD Now it’s time to exercise your new-found control over your financial future. It’s all about overseeing asset transfers, setting up budgeting and money management systems. It’s time to review your risk profile and reallocate investments to meet your current needs, and keep you on track with your goals. With the right guidance, you can take the financial pitfalls out of this emotional and challenging time and take control of your finances.

Step Two: PLAN Estimate your immediate needs. Develop a budget for current expenses and project a budget for future needs. This is the stage when you will start to build your picture of tomorrow.

authority and each other. Debbie also feels they have a special focus on families. If there are problems or crises at home, she and the staff are there to listen and offer support through prayer. Debbie tries to greet each child every day and said they have great teachers who work hard and are dedicated to the school’s mission. They work from the heart, and bring creativity and dedication to everything they do with the children. She and the teachers see this as an opportunity to share Jesus and minister to people by building a relationship and maintaining a steady presence in the lives of the young ones. When there are problems or conflicts, they are approached as an opportunity to teach about what it means to have success in the classroom. A typical day includes discovery time, projects, worship and Bible story, a message that Jesus loves us, prayer, large motor activities and circle time. First Trinity tries to integrate children with needs into its program, having students from the school spend time with children from Heritage Center. Special visits throughout the year include a dental hygienist, firemen, a zoo trunk and Mother Goose. The older children participate in field trips to the library, farmer’s market, and a pizza shop. Yearly activities include an ice cream social, school photos, and parent/teacher conferences. The children especially seem to enjoy watching a live caterpillar

ON There are few medical breakthroughs so amazing that they literally change the course of medicine. Just as LASIK surgery revolutionized vision care, and gastric bypass revolutionized weight loss, new technologies are revolutionizing how doctors treat pain and debilitating diseases such as degenerative joint conditions, migraines, arthritis, and neuropathy. The newest technology called MLS Laser Therapy, originally developed in Italy, is now available in the United States, and Dr. Anthony J. Bianchi, D.C. in Cheektowaga is proud to be on the medical technological forefront by offering this brand new therapy to his patients. MLS Laser Therapy is used to reduce pain, relieve inflammation, and restore mobility. It uses specific wavelengths of light that have a strong anti-inflammatory effect on tissues that are exposed to the laser. Photons of laser energy penetrate deeply into tissue and accelerate cellular reproduction and growth. As a result of exposure to the MLS laser, the cells of tendons, ligaments

The Wave of the Future in Pain Management and muscles repair themselves faster. As inflammation is reduced, pain subsides very quickly. Unlike some pharmacological solu- tions, there are no known negative side effects. Laser therapy is cleared by the FDA and proven successful as evidenced by extensive and credible studies conducted in our country’s finest institutions including Harvard University. Moreover, MLS Laser Therapy is painless and treatments average only 10 minutes. Over 90% of patients experience positive results within the first few treatments, with treatment protocols ranging from 3 to 15 sessions, depending on the nature of the condition. Another new technology is Whole Body Vibration (WBV) which was initially used by the Russian aerospace industry and is now being used to reduce arthritic pain, increase muscle strength, flexibility, blood circulation, improve walk balance, and increase bone density! Finally Disc Rehydration Therapy is the primary non-surgical safe and effective treatment

for patients with herniated disc, degenerative joint disease, facet arthritis, disc bulge, and spinal stenosis. This new therapy actually reduces the pressure inside the discs of the spine by drawing the bulging and herniated material back into the disc, relieving the pressure on the nerves of the spine, and eliminating pain. Unlike drugs or injections, this new therapy is natural and its effects are lasting and often permanent. The best news is that these new therapies are suited for almost everyone. Regardless of the therapies you’ve tried in the past you still have a chance to relieve your chronic pain or other debilitating condition and regain a normal healthy lifestyle. For more information about these therapies call 213-6824 or visit www.lordexwny.com. Mention this article when you call to qualify for a no-charge consultation with Dr. Bianchi. ✢

A Healing Moment The Boston Marathon Bombing By the Very Rev. Gary Schindler

Once I have lived somewhere or even visited somewhere, I always feel connected to that place forever. I went to Seminary in the Boston area. So when I heard the news of the two bombs exploding at the Boston Marathon, I felt a particular shock and fear. I’ve been on the streets on which the Boston Marathon is run. Many years ago my wife went to watch someone run the race. In the face of this it is inevitable that people start asking the questions that have heard over and over in the past few days. What if those bombs had killed someone I knew? Why would anyone do such a thing? What madness could possess someone to kill innocent bystanders? Anger, hate, fear, panic, hopelessness. All these emotions can fill our hearts and minds and souls. What is an appropriate response for those of us who have had deep reactions to the Boston Marathon Bombing, even though we have not had loved one or friend killed or injured? My thoughts, after the initial shock, was to remember what my teacher said when I was a teenager training to be a lifeguard. “Take care of yourself first,” he said, “If you drown you won’t be able to help anyone else.” It may seem counter-intuitive. It may even seem selfish. The truth is that if you take care of yourself you will be able to do more good and help others because you will be stronger, healthier and more spiritually fit. Perhaps the hardest thing to do is to recognize that bad things happen. We read in Genesis that when God created the world he saw that it was good. But humanity has strayed away from that goodness, and we live in a sinful and broken world. None of us can fix the world, but we can choose to be people who seek the good and strive to lead lives of caring, concern and compassion. When I see evil, I can best respond by caring for myself, showing concern in the midst of the situation, and then seeking to show compassion to others. So what can we do? First and foremost, don’t drown in a tsunami of data from media. In the minutes and hours immediately after an event like the Boston Marathon bombing or the 9/11 attacks, the talking heads and the postings and the tweets come blazingly fast, but are often erroneous. One

of the first reports I heard said that two unexploded bombs were found in Boston. Not true. Every electronic device I own has an on-off switch. Unless you have a real and concrete need to have minute by minute updates, turn them off. I say this fully aware of the irony that I found out about the Boston Marathon bombing in instant message from a family member. I listened to the news for a few minutes and then following my own advice, I turned everything off. Constant repetition of horrifying scenes and dismaying reports raises anxiety and promulgates despair. As time passes the veracity of information improves, things can be seen in context, and the situation very likely will not seem as hopeless. This is especially important when dealing with children. They do not need the constant drumbeat of disaster. They do not have the emotional tools to put all of this in perspective. They don’t have the wisdom which age brings. Remember that for most of those in Middle School the attacks on 9/11 are ancient history. It happened before they were born, or when they were too young to remember it. Second, if you feel you are drowning in the sadness, take some time for yourself. Go for a walk. Make a special meal. Play with your pet. Do something special with a loved one. Do what you absolutely need to do and then take time to remember that there is good in the world; that God is in control. Third, people sometimes seem to drown in a need to respond that can lead to compassion fatigue. If you feel moved to compassion, find a

way to respond appropriately. Prayer is a wonderful way to connect with God and feel connected with those who are hurting. Perhaps there are church organizations that help in times like these. Make a contribution to them, or to the Red Cross. Sometimes it feels important to do something. Make sure that the response is suitable for you. Too many volunteers at the scene of a disaster can cause difficulties. Donations should go to reliable and trusted agencies. Finally, remember what you found helpful in getting you through the anxious times. The next time something happens you can look back and use those same tools. There will be an end of the world, but most likely it is not happening now. In the meantime we can celebrate life, and enjoy the goodness which God offers us with each new day. Pray for the victims in Boston, for their families and friends. As you pray remember that even in the midst of this tragedy, God in Jesus Christ offers new life and hope to you and to the whole world. If you need to talk to someone, a Samaritan Counselor will always offer an outstretched hand and a listening ear, to help you through troubling times. You can make an appointment to meet at one of our 14 locations by phoning 716-743-9117. You can also find us on the web at: www.SCCWNY.com The Very Rev. Gary Schindler, M Div., is a staff member at the Samaritan Counseling Center. He has been an ordained minister for nearly 30 years. He offers spiritual mentoring, mentoring for young people and pre-marriage counseling. He has had experience as a chaplain with Chautauqua County Hospice, as well as working with a Hospice while on a Sabbatical in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2009. In addition to training in Crisis Intervention Stress Management, the Rev. Schindler provides services at the Samaritan Angola, Arcade and Springville sites. The Rev. Schindler also serves as the Dean of the Southern Erie Deanery of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York. He is married with three adult children and enjoys playing guitar, volunteering as a mentor at the Springville Elementary school, and plans to run his first half-marathon in May. History Corner Kingdom of Judah, 1007-587 B.C. The first King of Judah was David, son of Jesse, of the tribe of Benjamin. David was a charismatic leader, perceived as a threat to his throne by Saul, King of the 12 tribes of Israel. David led a group of men under distress or with grievances and debts. David and his band of men were successful in raiding Philistine territory while eluding King Saul and his forces. After King Saul’s death, Saul’s son Ishbosheth was proclaimed King of Israel. However, the tribe of Judah made David their King. He ruled from Hebron. After the murder of Ishbosheth, the tribes of Israel agree that David can be their King. David ruled until around 970 B.C., then his son Solomon ruled as King of Israel. 1 Kings 11 tells us it was God’s plan to split the Kingdom into two and to take ten tribes from Reheboam, Solomon’s son, David’s grandson and give them to Jeroboam. So beginning about 930 B.C., and for about the next 200 years, the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah were separate nations, each with its own army, politics, taxes and government. The period after Solomon is sometimes known as the divided monarchy. Israel and the ten tribes with a variety of dynasties and capital cities and Judah with one dynasty (davids) and one capital, Jerusalem. Most people in the ancient world worshiped or at least acknowledged the existence of many gods, Israel and Judah were not exceptions. King Reheboam followed his father Solomon’s practice of allowing the worship of other gods. The Bible says he went even further in his pagan practices. Reheboam’s son King Abijam gets the same condemnation, “All the sins that his father had committed… he committed too, nor was he faithful to the Lord” (1 Kings 15:3,

NEB). But the next King, Asa, does get approval from 1 Kings 15:11, but not complete approval. Out of 21 kings and 1 queen of Judah, only 8 kings get a sentence of approval. Kings Asa, Jehoshaphat, Joash, Amaziah, Uzziah, Jotham, Hezekiah and Josiah, were approved of, usually with a phrase like “he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord” and followed but …sacred poles/hlll shrines were allowed to remain – that was not a good thing. The two best kings at reforming Judah and bringing about proper worship were the Kings Hezekiah and Josiah. The Kingdom of Judah was relatively free from foreign powers until the 8th century when Assyria began to expand its empire south. An exception we know of was an attack on Jerusalem in the 10th century, about 925B.C. by Egypt. About 735 B.C. Ahaz was king of Judah in Jerusalem. The Assyrian army was moving south; King Pekah of Israel and King Rezin of Damascus joined forces against Ahaz of Judah because

he refused to join their resistance against Assyria (2 Kings 16, and Isaiah 7). Ahaz sent gold and silver to the Assyrians with a request for help. The Assyrians defeated Israel and Damascus. Perhaps thinking the Assyrian god was more powerful than the Lord, Ahaz then had a copy of a pagan altar built at the Jerusalem Temple. In 721, God used the Assyrian Empire to bring an end to the Kingdom of Israel, for their idolatry and their exploitation of the poor, the widow and the orphan by their leaders. In about 700 the Assyrians were at the gates of Jerusalem, but they return to Assyria, Hezekiah, with a miracle from the Lord, successfully defended Jerusalem. About 100 years later, Judah again expected the Lord to intervene on their behalf, having failed to learn from the example of Samara and the Kingdom of Israel. Nor did they learn from the prophets; from Amos first, “you that turn justice upside down…because you levy taxes on the poor...you who persecute the guiltless…They are told to have evil and love good; enthrone justice in the courts.” And similar warnings from Micah, Hosea, Isaiah and finally Jeremiah about Jerusalem, “Can you find any many who acts justly, who seeks the truth: (Jer. 5:1, NEB) and “For all, high and low, are out for ill-gotten gain, Jer. 6:13, NEB). Perhaps, the prophet Micah summarized it best when he told Israel that what God wanted from them was ... “To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8, NIV). Thus the Babylonians destroyed, in 587, Jerusalem, the Temple, that holy place where God’s name dwelt, and the holy city of Jerusalem. The Kingdom of Judah under Davidic rulers came to an end.

With their crude and rude speech that belongs in bat-caves.

Especially when listeners are no more than willing slaves,

Although there are like-minded linguists acting as knaves, While dignified and graceful language deserves better raves,

Notably; nasty words are like a dirty path that nobody paves. To be a verbally wise speaker is what every person craves.

When it is better to be known as honest, before filling graves,

For life is tough and only the tested and strong ever braves,

The road that is usly facing close shaves, Enduring to the end and praising the Holy Lord who saves.
