Collect of the Day

Enfolding God, Trinity of love, you are our source, our goal, our life: may we be born again in you no more to live alone and unconnected, but sharing in the Spirit’s breath and carried to your heart; through Jesus Christ, who lifts us up. Amen.

Please be seated.

Psalm 29

Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, * ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his Name; * worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; * the Lord is upon the mighty waters. The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; * the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; * the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon; He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, * and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox.

Afferte Domino

2 Hymn

The voice of the Lord splits the flames of fire; the voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; * the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe * and strips the forests bare.

And in the temple of the Lord * all are crying, “Glory!”

The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; * the Lord sits enthroned as King for evermore.

The Lord shall give strength to his people; * the Lord shall give his people the blessing of peace. Please stand.

The Holy Gospel

Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

John 3:1–17

There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? “Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Confession

You are the never-ceasing open gift of love; we turn in upon ourselves. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy.

You live beyond all centers of power; we enclose your grace. Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy. You rejoice in a multitude of names; we try to pin you down. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy.

Absolution

The Celebrant says

Through the cross of Christ, God have mercy on you, pardon you and set you free. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. God strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in life eternal. Amen.

Silent Prayer and Candle Lighting

Following the Intercessions during the instrumental music, you are welcome to come forward to light a votive candle as a symbol of your prayer. As we see others light candles, we recognize that we are all carrying prayer concerns known to us alone, and we are reminded to treat one another with kindness and care. Tapers and votives are located to the right of the altar and in front of the transept to the left. Please feel free to go to either of these places to light a candle.

The Peace

The Celebrant says

The peace of the Trinity is uproar and color, dissent and challenge, wandering and exile, invitation and inclusion, drawing our bodies and spirits into the riotous harmony of God.

Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you.

The people greet one another in the name of the Lord, after which the people are seated for brief announcements.

The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

We praise you, Holy Trinity, mystery of being, and freedom of the world. You opened your love to bring into existence a world other than yourself, reflecting infinite beauty in matter’s complex bonds and spirit’s evolution.

You drew near to Abraham and Sarah as the unexpected guest; you wrestled with Jacob and blessed him with wounds; you dwelt as glory and wisdom with the people of your covenant. Your jealous heart assumed our human story and came among us in Word made flesh. Through the scandal of Christ crucified and the restless Spirit of life, you bring life to our diversity, you end our isolation, you draw all our ways into the community of your grace.

Therefore we join the eternal song of power and glory shared, of communion and integrity, of difference and delight:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us and upon these gifts that these fragile, earthly things may be to us the body and blood of our lord and brother, Jesus Christ; who, on the night that he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom. Calling them to his table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: ‘This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.’ In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me.’ As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond all words can hold.

Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died.

Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

7

Therefore, we come to him in whom all is created in heaven and on earth, whose cross and resurrection make all things new. We offer this to you, asking you to smile upon the gift we bring, for you alone are the Giver and Christ’s the gift through which we live once and for all.

Through him who was emptied to bear your fullness we make our prayer with all created life to the glory of the God who fills all in all now and for ever. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of The Bread

Celebrant We break this bread to share in the Body of Christ; People We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

Celebrant Bread and wine; the gifts of God for the people of God.

People May we who share these gifts be found in Christ and Christ in us.

At the direction of the ushers you are invited to form a single line in the central aisle to receive Communion in front of the altar.

The sacrament of Holy Communion has been precious to Christians for 2,000 years. It is a way in which many sense the reality of God’s forgiveness, our union with God and each other, and the eternal life to which we belong. Please know that you do not have to be an Episcopalian to receive Communion. Receive the Bread in the palm of your hand and the Wine either by drinking from the cup or by intinction, touching the Bread to the Wine. Gluten-free Bread is available; simply ask. If you need Communion brought to you in the pew, please tell an usher.

8

The People stand.

Post

Communion Prayer

Celebrant Let us pray.

God revealed in the stranger’s approach and the bread of hospitality, in the message of new life and the laughter of response: we thank you for this meal, this sharing in yourself, and we pray that our communion might be broken apart for the world. Amen.

The

Blessing

May the outrageous welcome of the Father accept us for who we are; may the incarnation of the Word touch and hold us close; may the wandering of the Spirit help us risk ourselves for love; and the blessing of God, Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer, be with you this night and always. Amen.

The Dismissal

Celebrant Entrust your life to the Lord of the open spaces and the time of adventure; to the life that pulses through rain drenched streets and mountain heights; to the love that sustains us through feast and famine. Let God’s hope be a clearing sky before you, a compass in your heart guiding you to where you belong.
