Beloved in Christ, we come together to offer to Almighty God our worship and praise of thanksgiving, to confess our sins and to receive God’s forgiveness, to hear God’s holy Word proclaimed, to bring before God our needs and the needs of the world, and to pray that in the power of the Spirit we may serve God and know the greatness of God’s love.

Acts 9:36–43

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas.

She was devoted to good works and acts of charity. At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, “Please come to us without delay.” So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them. Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive. This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

Pray for this fragile earth, our island home. Pray that we would be its good stewards and it would withstand our abuse.

Pray for the Church. Pray that where it is right God will strengthen it, and where it is in error God will direct it. Pray that God will fill the Church with all truth and peace.

Pray for the joy of human life, with all its wonder and surprises. Pray we would remember that all people are created in the very image of God. Silence

Pray for the poor, the destitute, and the dying, in the full knowledge that God looks with special favor upon those in greatest need.

Pray in thanksgiving for all the blessings of this life, and for the promise of the next.

The Great Thanksgiving The people stand.

Wise and gracious God, you spread a table before us; nourish your people with the word of life, and the bread of heaven.

Before time, you were. You created us, and when we strayed you drew us back to you with your saving grace. For the gift of your grace and in supplication and thanksgiving to you, we bring you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus Christ took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks to you, and said, “Drink this, all of you; This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Father, we now celebrate the memorial of your Son. By means of this holy 7

bread and cup, we show forth the sacrifice of his death, and proclaim his resurrection, until he comes again. Gather us by this Holy Communion into one body in your Son Jesus Christ. Make us a living sacrifice of praise. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory are yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

This two-part series will continue next week, May 15, at 10 a.m. in Reynolds Hall.

Senior Sunday • In honor of our high school seniors and their families, Christ Church Cathedral will celebrate Senior Sunday on May 15 at the 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. services.

In our liturgy, both the seniors and their guardians will receive a prayer and a blessing. We will also host a reception for them in between the services. Please join us for this special Sunday, as we give thanks to our seniors and their families.

Todd Wilson Organ Recital • Todd Wilson, regarded across America and around the world as one of today’s finest concert organists, will present an organ recital at Christ Church Cathedral on Friday, May 13 beginning at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
