Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me?

Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The Three Choirs Festival is an annual choral event in England, featuring several days of concerts by the choirs of Worcester, Gloucester, and Hereford Cathedrals. First established in 1715 in Gloucester, the event now rotates between the three counties.

Vaughan Williams premiered his 5 Mystical Songs for orchestra, baritone soloist, and chorus at the festival in 1911. The text to this work comes from the poetry of George Herbert, a 17th century priest in the Church of England. The offertory solo is the fourth of five movements, and Herbert’s writing here references the famous John 14:6 verse, describing Jesus as the “way, the truth, and the life”. Following his rising success during the early 1910s, Vaughan Williams abruptly stopped writing music to join the military following the outbreak of World War I. The collection to which today’s organ voluntaries belong was first published in 1920, and was some of the composer’s first music released following his writing hiatus. Welcome Sunday, May 10, 2020 Announcements Today we are celebrating May Fete • The annual tradition continues — safely with social distancing! There are recipes to make, photos to see and share on social media, and a video to watch. Read the Thursday enews from a few days ago to find out more.

Virtual worship continues until June 1 • Bishop Doyle and Dean Thompson have joined bishops, clergy, and other faith leaders from Houston Episcopal, Baptist, United Methodist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches in writing a letter to say that, following the consensus of medical leaders in Houston, Christ Church Cathedral parishioners will continue to worship virtually from home until June 1.

Dean Thompson has created a task force that will be thinking through what future on-campus gatherings at the Cathedral will look like. The task force has also created a survey; please keep an eye out for it and respond. In the latter half of May, Dean Thompson will update everyone on those plans.

The Cathedral is hosting a socially distanced, safe blood drive on May 31 • A blood drive is one of the many ways we can support others during this time. One donation has the ability to save three lives. Our safe blood drive will be Sunday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Reynolds Hall. People can give by appointment only.
