Work Life Balance: with a focus on life
Summer is here! The kids are out of school, vacations are lined up, and the CCBA’s summer social event calendar is in full swing! We kicked it off on June 15th with Bowling with the Judges, where yours truly (shock!) got the highest score of the night with a 171, and Judge Parcher’s team took the trophy for highest scoring team. Bowling with the Judges has always been one of my favorite events of the year because it gives us all the opportunity to socialize with attorneys from other practice areas and members of the bench. In August, we have our second annual Summer Soiree on the 19th. This year is Lawyer Luau themed, and will be complete with Hawaiian food, lawn games, live music (from the all-lawyer band River North), and plenty of Luau décor. We awarded our second Colleague of the Year, at our Soiree last year, and just recently sent out nominations for this year’s CoY award. If you have particular staff you want to honor this year, please consider filling out a nomination form for them. Six days after the Luau, we have the CCBA Golf Tournament at Tri Mountain Golf Course, so look for signups for that soon.
In addition to all the social events coming up, I have a busy summer with both professional and personal travel plans. I attended the National Association of Drug Court Professionals annual RISE conference in Houston the last week of June. While Houston in late June is not ideal,
especially for someone who is five and half months pregnant, the conference was informative, and it was great to be surrounded by other therapeutic court personnel from around the country. In early July, I am headed to Europe for two weeks with my husband, 20-month-old (I know, I am questioning my sanity too), and dad and stepmom. More to come on that in my President’s Message next month…

May 2, 2023 board meeting minutes: Motion to Approve (Phelan/Melnick) Approved
Treasurer’s Report (Melnick): Reviewed financial reports for May. Still in the black about 12k, but that won’t be final outcome due to cycle of expenses and revenue.

Hearsay Committee:(Hawke) articles are in ahead of schedule, great content planned, new members are contributing.
Social Committee:(Phelan) Bowling with the Judges is next week. Darco and Jacobs observed their annual tradition of Lisa gifting Jesse a Lebowski themed shirt for the event. Lawyer Luau is in August. The golf tournament in September will have a separate womens division in addition to the open division. Volunteers are needed for the golf event; contact Darco or Phelan if you will volunteer.
CLE Committee: (Darco) The committee is off to a great start planning and have a tentative schedule for September through April.
DEI Committee: (Wechselblatt) Pride CLE this month. Meeting with Vancouver Public Schools to debrief the Street Law program. The CCVLP is hosting an art fundraiser event. Judicial Mentorship Program applications are available. The DEI Committee meets this month

WSBA Local Hero Award:(Phelan) Zach Stoumbos of Landerholm, P.S. will receive the Local Hero award in recognition of his volunteerism and exceptional professionalism as a lawyer and mentor. The WSBA will host a luncheon on June 23 at their Board of Governors meeting in Vancouver to present Zach with the award. Congratulations Zach!
Annual Meeting Date: (Phelan) Save the Date. The meeting will be September 18th in person with a CLE to follow.

Beer and Justice Event: (Melnick) The Vancouver Beer and Justice event will raise funds for the Campaign for Equal Justice and civil legal aid programs in Clark County. The event will be June 29th at Heathen Brewing. Your support is critical to ensuring everyone has quality representation regardless of income. If you missed the event, then you can always contribute to the Legal Foundation of Washington.

Judge Fairgrieve: From the Crim side, this week is the ending of the second 5-week cycle in our process. We have a 5-week rotation that we do, things seem to be moving smoothly. We implemented recommendation from the consultant and thoughts from stakeholders, but do not know until the schedule, per the recommendations, was tested. We moved 1st appearance to the afternoon with is working well, same with change of plea. We did not have great data before change, but passed the eye test because stakeholders would tell us if things were not working. Next week is the first since COVID that no trials are being called ready. We are generally happy, bunch of little things we need to work on to improve efficiency. Some serious trials are coming up, moving through back-log of cases.
Curt Welsh – Were there may comments received in May on the proposed changes to the local rules, and in relation to the change to LCR 6?
Judge Fairgrieve: I think Judge Sheldrick and Ms. Stone are the best contacts. They can tell you what volume they received.
Dan Lloyd: Nothing to report.
Jessi Anderson: CCVLP Art Auction coming up soon, happening on the 24th at Hidden House. Tickets need to be purchased beforehand and can be found on our website. Spread the word! Also had a question about pro se family law individuals; we have had pro se come back to say drop-box was for attys only, and they needed to drop their submissions to the clerk? is that accurate?
