Thank you for joining us this evening at Northpoint Church for the final performance of the academic semester by the musicians of the California Baptist University Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. On behalf of all of us at the Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Performing Arts, welcome!
Our concert this evening centers on the theme of “Koinonia” - a word I learned at church a few weeks ago. Koinonia is a Greek word meaning “fellowship,” “partnership,” or “joint participation.” In a Christian context, it refers to the deep fellowship among believers with each other. This word gets to the heart of ensemble music making at the highest level. We as musicians must be deeply connected with one another in order to turn the unique contributions of dozens of performers into something greater than ourselves: a unified artistic, authentic, and compelling voice that has the power to convey that which words cannot.
We have been working hard to build Koinonia across our band program over these past few months through a focus on meaningfully connecting with one another personally, spiritually, and musicallyand the results have been quite special.
The compositions we are performing this evening speak to embracing Koinonia across all of humanity. This evening you will hear repertoire drawn from a wonderful variety of styles, time periods, cultures, and composers from across our world. You'll hear a little bit of everything spanning from the music of the 1500's, to a fantastic suite of Latin American dances, to wind band standards, and to several freshly composed pieces from some of the finest new voices in wind band writing.
A special note of gratitude to our dean Dr. Joseph Bolin, our associate deans Dr. David Toledo and Dr. Gene Moon, director of academic operations Courtney Ladd, director of marketing Alex Stephens, and administrative assistant Hannah Boone – all of whom have invested a significant amount of support to our ensembles this semester. In addition, we wish to extend our most sincere thanks to Matthew McConnell, director of strategic events and projects, and Lilliane Vargas, performance and events coordinator. These two work tirelessly to make sure every detail is taken care of at all events across the Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Performing Arts. We also extend a warm thank you to Northpoint Church for hosting our concert tonight.
The musicians and I are deeply grateful for your presence this evening and look forward to greeting you in person following the performance.
