the IMPACT PROJECT UPDATE
We are excited to announce that we have achieved 70% of our $500,000 capital campaign goal. These funds will be used to increase both the scale and scope of our work and to create even greater impact. The IMPACT Project, Jana’s Campaign’s major fundraising initiative, officially announced at the beginning of 2016, seeks to raise $500,000 over the span of eighteen months. In the first twelve months of fundraising, Jana’s Campaign has raised $347,450 in donations and pledges, with the remaining 30% of the fundraising goal to be met in the coming year. Every dollar raised through The IMPACT Project will go directly to providing effective gender and relationship prevention programming in one of Jana’s Campaign’s program areas. We are making a difference. With your help we can do even more. Please support The IMPACT Project and help us reach our goal!

Jana’s Campaign is a national education and violence prevention organization with the single mission of reducing gender and relationship violence. In honor of the late Jana Mackey and other victims and survivors of gender and relationship violence, Jana’s Campaign delivers comprehensive educational programming that prevents domestic and dating violence, sexual violence and stalking.
OUR MISSION
OUR PREVENTION APPROACH
HIGHER EDUCATION
Our mission is to provide quality educational programming that prevents gender and relationship violence. Working with secondary schools, colleges and universities, and community-based organizations and agencies, Jana’s Campaign delivers specialized and comprehensive prevention programming that is designed to prevent violence, build healthy relationships and create new social norms.
First and foremost, Jana’s Campaign believes that gender and relationship violence is preventable. The ultimate goal of our programs is to stop violence before it starts. Our efforts include primary, secondary and tertiary prevention approaches. Second, we believe that prevention efforts must address all levels of the social-ecological model. This calls for comprehensive behavioral and attitudinal changes at the individual, relationship, community, and social levels. Finally, Jana’s Campaign utilizes evidence-based prevention strategies and practices that illustrate the greatest impact. Our educational programs are designed to raise awareness and reduce risk factors while supporting protective measures, engaging bystanders, promoting healthy and respectful relationships, and encouraging the development of new social norms.
We believe colleges and universities can and should do more to prevent gender and relationship violence. We work to provide higher education institutions with the training and resources they need to improve their prevention and response efforts to sexual violence, partner violence and stalking on campus.
ABOUT JANA On July 3, 2008, Jana Mackey lost her life to violence perpetrated by an ex-boyfriend in Lawrence, Kansas. The 25-year-old University of Kansas law student was an advocate for women’s rights and had spent years volunteering to aid victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Jana represented the new generation of American feminists. As a passionate social and women’s activist, Jana fought for equality and social justice at every turn. Described as “honey on steel,” Jana Lynne Mackey was the kind of woman that inspired others. She inspired through her words, her song, and her actions. Jana was beautiful, intelligent and kind. She was an advocate, a friend, a sister, and a daughter. She was magnetic. She was a bright spot in an ordinary day. She was a hero.
In 2016, our Higher Education programming continued to grow throughout the U.S. This included our specific and tailored work with individual colleges and universities. Most often, this included presentations, workshops and trainings on topics like consent education, bystander intervention trainings, risk reduction, institutional procedures and protocols and the gender specific Man2Man discussions with male dominated student groups.
HEARTLAND
16
campus safety
summit 20
In addition to this work, we have expanded our campus safety summit programming. On November 16-17, 2016, Jana’s Campaign hosted the fourth annual Heartland Campus Safety Summit on the campus of Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS. Over 200 participants representing ten states and 80 universities and organizations attended the summit. Also in 2016, we launched the inaugural Rocky Mountain Campus Safety Summit in June on the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. Nearly 150 participants, representing 17 states and 56 colleges and universities attended this first regional summit. In April 2017, we will also be launching our third regional summit, The Midwest Campus Safety Summit, on the campus of Ball State University in Muncie, IN. The purpose of these summits is to provide a regional and affordable two-day workshop for college and university administrators, faculty, staff and students that will address important issues about preventing and responding to gender and relationship violence. The summits are designed to host national experts and encourage the sharing of best practices among participants.
Impacted By Our Regional Summits
What started in Curt and Christie’s basement has grown tremendously. Now, with professional staff and offices in Kansas and Colorado, Jana’s Campaign works extensively in middle and high schools, colleges and universities, and communities throughout Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas to provide comprehensive gender and relationship violence prevention education. We are excited and grateful to see that schools and communities understand why the prevention work that we're doing is so important, as well as actively pursuing our services. We are making a difference! I am so proud to lead this organization. As you read through the pages of this report, I hope you'll feel proud as well. Our success and the difference that we are making is made possible by the friends, supporters, donors and partners of Jana’s Campaign. Thank you for all you do for Jana’s Campaign. We look forward to continuing this work together. Warmly,
Kelley Kuhlmann Parker Executive Director

I remember where I was, what I was doing, even what I was wearing when I learned that my friend Jana Mackey had lost her life to relationship violence. It was and continues to be one of the most impactful events of my life. Since that day in 2008, and since the inception of Jana’s Campaign in 2009, I knew that Jana’s Campaign co-founders Christie and Curt Brungardt would dedicate their lives to making the world a safer place. What I didn’t understand was just how much of an impact this organization would be able to make just a few short years after it began.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION We believe in the power of speaking out about the issues of gender and relationship violence. In partnership with community organizations, we work to provide community-wide educational and prevention programs that reduce violence. Our efforts also include mobilizing others to volunteer and make a difference in their communities. This past year, staff and board members were directly involved in several major community educational activities. These included local community forums, regional and national conferences, foster parent trainings, coordinated community response discussions, and regional educational webinars. Most notably, in 2016 Curt and Christie Brungardt of Jana’s Campaign worked directly with 400 soldiers from the 1st Engineering Battalion of the U.S. Army’s 1st Division at Fort Riley, Kansas.
PROGRAM FOCUS AREAS
PEOPLE
SECONDARY EDUCATION We understand that one of the most effective ways to prevent gender and relationship violence is to help adolescents understand what constitutes healthy vs. unhealthy relationships at the very time that they are beginning to enter into their first relationships. We believe that by empowering young people to engage in healthy and supportive relationships and by creating a culture of strong respect among adolescents, we can ultimately reduce the instances of gender and relationship violence.

This past year our secondary school prevention programs experienced tremendous growth. In 2016 alone, we worked directly with middle and high school students from 286 schools. From 2014-2016, our various teen dating violence prevention activities impacted students, teachers, coaches, parents and administrators from the states of Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri, Texas and Oregon. Over this time, 23,500 secondary school students have been directly impacted by our gender and relationship violence prevention programming.
Using our comprehensive model, we offer schools a tailor-made, multi-level prevention program that meets the specific needs of each school.

SAFE DATES
Most Utilized Programs
Administrative Associates
We utilize the Safe Dates curriculum, a comprehensive evidence-based teen dating violence prevention program. This is a ten-session dating abuse curriculum designed for 6th through 12th graders and is best used when infused in an existing class.
SCHOOL/COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS AND MINI GRANTS Our service project mini-grants allow students to put knowledge into action as they integrate issues of gender-based violence into a community or a school service project. These $100 mini-grants support projects that help students realize they have the power to make a difference.
This sports season curriculum trains athletic coaches to use their influence to help male student athletes build healthy relationships and prevent gender and relationship violence.
GENDER-SPECIFIC PRESENTATIONS Her Toolkit is a female-specific program option that educates young women about issues such as healthy relationships, body image, self-confidence, and digital respect. Man2Man is a male-specific program that addresses the role men can and should play in reducing gender and relationship violence.
FACULTY/STAFF TRAININGS
COACHING BOYS INTO MEN We provide faculty/staff trainings and in-service workshops on a number of topics. Whether geared toward faculty, staff, administrators, or the entire school districts, our specialized trainings are created to specifically meet the needs of each school and their students.
PRESENTATIONS We create and deliver presentations and assemblies specific to the school’s needs. These presentations include classroom presentations, school-wide assemblies and other organization presentations over various topics relating to gender and relationship violence.
Most importantly, when reviewing the pre/post assessment data from students participating in the Safe Dates curriculum alone, students showed positive movement in all measures provided. All of our prevention services are offered at little or no cost to the schools. This is made possible by the generous donations from our many friends and grants from Verizon Wireless, Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Kansas, Kansas Health Foundation and The Heartland Community Foundation.
National FCCLA Award One of our service project mini-grant recipients, Wabaunsee High School (Alma, KS) students Britany Buchanan and Alison Johnson, were awarded the FCCLA National Stop the Violence Award in 2016 (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America). Their project, “Week Without Violence”, included multiple awareness and prevention activities throughout their community as well as a school presentation by the Brungardts of Jana’s Campaign.
