TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Canberra offers world-class venues and many are leading the industry through their dedicated sustainability efforts. When you host your business event in Canberra, you are not only tappinginto the local k nowledge and expertise, you are also giving your event a sustainable edge. Here is how some of Canberra’s event venues are working towards a more sustainable future: NATIONAL ARBORETUM Following the devastating Canberra bushfires in 2003, the site of the National Arboretum was earmarked as a place for recovery and regeneration. Since the first trees were planted back in 2007, it is now home to 44,000 rare and endangered trees across a 250-hectare site. It’s a venue celebrated for its forward-thinking vision and conservation for future generations, nurturing a living collection of international significance. As the trees mature, they’re anticipated to absorb over 957,000kg of CO2 annually. As well as a focus on species preservation, carbon reduction, and science-based educational tours and programs, the Arboretum is known for spectacular function spaces, from the more intimate Margaret Whitlam Pavilion, to the sustainablybuilt Village Centre, which marked its 10th birthday in 2023 and can host grand events for up to 900 people. Even the catering by award-winning The Ginger Group is eco-focussed, and everything from food to wine is ethically sourced locally, reducing its carbon footprint.
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS Right on the edge of the city is the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG), offering an oasis of peace. Conservation of Australian biodiversity is central to everything they do, and their living collection includes over 4,500 native plant species, more than 300 of which are threatened in the wild. These plants, along with seeds and spores stored in the National Seed Bank, provide insurance against extinction for some of Australia’s rarest plants. Scientists at the National Seed Bank and horticultural experts in the ANBG nursery work with external organisations to research and conserve threatened native plant species around Australia. With a range of indoor and outdoor spaces and on-site catering, the ANBG also offers functions with a tranquil and ever-changing backdrop. Choose from board-room style meeting rooms and workshop spaces, through to picturesque lawn and garden areas which can host up to 500 people. In late 2024, the Ian Potter National Conservatory will also open, and will be available to host intimate cocktail parties or functions of up to 80 people. The conservatory is one of the most energy-efficient in the world, with an eyecatching hovering cube design that optimises environmental performance.
Functions can also be paired with immersive and participatory experiences, like workshops, guest speakers, and cultural heritage tours led by an Indigenous guide, including a walk to the bush tucker garden. WILDBARK Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary in Canberra’s north is Australia’s largest single box gum grassywoodland area managed for conservation. The 1,200 hectares of fox-free bushland gives visitors the opportunity to spot animals that haven’t existed in the wild on mainland Australia for over a century. Sitting on the perimeter is Wildbark visitors centre, a n aturebased learning centre and function and event space. The venue was constructed with sustainability firmly in mind, from the use of repurposed and recycled materials, reclaimed rocks, and its water-sensitive design, through to the reception desk made using a fallen yellow box tree from the nearby nature reserve. The space is dedicated to creating a biodiverse future for Australia and educating the public on how to turn the tide on extinction. Wildbark offers a unique venue space for up to 250 people, withexclusive use of the site including the deck and fire pit. The catering menu incorporates native ingredients, and special additions like a private twilight tour, wildlife encounter, or cultural awareness workshop can also be incorporated. Australian Travel Agents Co-operative (ATAC) worked with us for their 2023 ATAC Future Focus Conference. Event organiser Jackie Gordon from Dovetail Brand Engagement said CCB were: “very professional, very organised and helpful. CCB went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed and kept in contact in the months building up to the event. Most delegates had underestimated how great Canberra is and hadn’t travelled there in a long time, so they were very surprised that we had put on such an amazing event in fantastic venues and had 5 star accommodation at a great hotel - all much more than what they had expected. It was also easily accessible from all states nationally and everyone loved the quick drive from the airport and no traffic.”
The Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) worked with CCB for the IEEE Region 10 Symposium in 2023, and said “the support and guidance from CCB was phenomenal. They played a crucial role in being the conduit to identifying the right businesses for our needs to host a conference successfully in Canberra. Building relationships with the team at the Bureau over the years to finally making an event happen and hosting it successfully has been a truly amazing journey. I will certainly seek the support of the Bureau the next time I think of hosting an event in Canberra.”

The event was based at Hotel Realm, with breakout events at Yowani Country Club, National Gallery of Australia, Parliament House, and a bus tour. Wil Cornelissen from Rotary said, “Canberra has all that you need to have a great conference. From shopping to accommodation, from museums to sightseeing. So many opportunities.”
WHY CANBERRA?
OUR CLIENTS TELL US WHY
The Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand (SMAANZ) worked with CCB for their November 2023 conference, hosting 127 delegates from 15 countries at University of Canberra. Conference chair Stirling Sharpe said, “Our delegates thoroughly loved their time in the nation’s capital and having the opportunity to explore our national institutions through organised activities and functions.”
“The Canberra Convention Bureau was highly professional and efficient. There was not much more that could be added — whatever was asked for or suggested was accommodated for. And the tree planting at the Arboretum as a speaker gift was very well received.”
“The CCB were an absolute dream to work with. When wet weather threatened our conference’s opening event, the CCB came to the rescue by finding us an amazing indoor venue within a matter of hours. If you are planning to bid for a conference or event, I would thoroughly recommend getting in touch with the CCB and using their services – your event will be better for it.”

SUSTAINABLE EVENTS
SUSTAINABLE EVENTS

When you hold your business event in Canberra, you are also showcasing your commitment to a more sustainable future. The nation’s capital is not only a green, liveable, and innovative city, it has also been recognised globally as one of the most sustainable cities in the world; both by Earth.org in 2022, and Uswitch (UK) in 2021. And the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) continues to deliver one of the most ambitious climate action agendas in the world. Here are just some of the ways Canberra is contributing to a future that’s genuinely sustainable:
24
TAP INTO OUR ENERGY The ACT is powered by 100% renewable electricity, generated by wind and photovoltaic power—the first city outside Europe and eighth in the world to achieve this—and is on track to achieve zero net emissions by 2045. Canberra also has the first testing facility in Australia for replacing natural gas with hydrogen, and is home to Australia’s largest community-owned solar farm. WATCH THIS GREEN SPACE In Canberra you’ll find a modern, well-planned, and green city, and nature is never far away. In fact around 70% of the territory is pure open space, parkland, or nature reserve. And don’t be surprised to see some of the native wildlife right in the heart of town! GETTING AROUND A smaller and well-connected city means it’s easy to get around, reducing your carbon footprint. The expanding light rail network is completely powered by renewable energy, while 87% of Canberra’s transport infrastructure uses green energy. The extensive bike path network also makes it easy to get around using electric scooters, bikes, or just on foot. Canberra also has the highest number of electric vehicle charge stations per capita in Australia.
SUPPORT FOR EVENT ORGANISERS
SUSTAINABLE EVENTS

OUR CLEAN AIR As a planned city with more green space than concrete, Canberra’s air quality is well above average for a capital. Local government incentivises residents to reduce air pollution by replacing wood heaters with electric, providing free electric vehicle car registration, and legislating against gas appliances in new builds. GOOD, CLEAN IDEAS Waste reduction is also a strong focus in Canberra, and infrastructure is in place to sort and process everything from food scraps to construction waste. The supply of single use plastics is also prohibited in the ACT. GREEN CONFERENCING AND EVENTS Canberra is well set up and experienced in running events with less of a carbon footprint. If arriving by air, you land at the award-winning Canberra Airport, which was among the first in the world to install tri-generation plants, reducing carbon emissions by 75%. Local government also incentivises businesses to implement sustainable practices. And Canberra is the home of many academic and innovative institutions which can provide your conference with speakers and experts in the field of sustainability.

ACCESSIBLE EVENTS One in five people have accessibility needs, so it is important to consider accessibility when planning your event, or risk excluding a significant portion of potential attendees. Canberra is a planned city, filled with a wide range of highly accessible venues. With fewer traffic issues, wide streets, transit lanes, bike paths and our infamous roundabouts, it’s an easy place to get around. Many venues, such as Australia’s national institutions, have been designed to include features such as ramps, wider parking, audio tours and brail pads, ensuring they are wheelchair, sight and hearing impaired friendly. For some special experiences there is wheelchair basketball at the AIS, the sparkling interaction of Questacon and the wonderful sights and sounds of the National Zoo and Aquarium. Tours can be tailored specifically for the group or individual with various mobility vehicles available for hire at each venue. GetAboutAble is a Canberra-based social enterprise that empowers people with mobility, hearing, vision, and other accessibility needs. It is there to also help the events, travel, and business sectors be more inclusive for people with disability. It provides the tools and resources to help make your job easier and to include more for more at your event. CANBERRA THROUGH THE SEASONS
CANBERRA THROUGH THE SEASONS From the red and amber leaves that blanket the city in autumn, to the bright pops of colour as the blooms emerge in spring, Canberra enjoys four distinct seasons. And no matter when you visit, there’s always something wonderful to discover.

AUTUMN
WINTER
If you’re after a jam-packed calendar of events to complement your conference program, autumn is the time to visit Canberra. The city rises early and looks to the skies for the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, and then stays up late to watch the national institutions illuminated for Enlighten. Head up in a hot air balloon yourself for a birds-eye view of the capital that you’ll never forget.
While the mornings may be frosty, winter in Canberra tends to boast crystal clear skies and beautiful days. Head to the National Arboretum for spectacular views and explore forest trees wrapped in bright scarves for the season.
Once harvest is finished for the year, it’s also the perfect time to visit one of Canberra region’s 140 cool-climate vineyards, either just for a taste to discover a new favourite, or to indulge in one of the winery restaurants where you can settle in for a feast of local produce.
You can also indulge at the Truffle Festival - either enjoy the tasty morsels in dishes around town or head to a nearby truffle farm and follow a truffle dog on a hunt. Many venues boast cosy open fireplaces - try and nab prime position right in front and settle in with a glass of local red wine. For delegates who want to extend their stay, it’s a short 2.5-hour trip south to the ski fields.
SPRING
SUMMER
When spring has sprung, the place to be in Canberra is Commonwealth Park, where more than one million flowers bloom in unison for the month-long Floriade, Australia’s biggest celebration of spring.
The summer months in Canberra are best enjoyed outdoors, whether it’s watching the cricket at Manuka Oval, or enjoying the long days and balmy conditions at an outdoor bar or restaurant.
With the weather warming up, it’s a great time to get outdoors. Take your picnic out onto Lake Burley Griffin with a self-drive GoBoat or Love Boat. And a short drive from town, the ACT’s picturesque national parks provide endless hiking opportunities.
The temperatures tend to stay quite pleasant, but if you’re looking to cool down, the national institutions and art galleries always have an exciting program this time of year. After taking in an exhibition or at the end of a conference day, why not wind down lakeside at Margot Wine & Espresso Bar or cool off in Verity Lane in the city.

INDIGENOUS CULTURE
INDIGENOUS CULTURE
Canberra is on Ngunnawal country and has been home to the Ngunnawal, Ngunawal and Ngambri peoples for over 20,000 years. Our city’s name, ‘Canberra’, is thought to be derived from the Ngunnawal word for ‘meeting place,’ so it was no surprise that in 2023, the majority of Canberrans voted Yes in a national referendum for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament. The capital offers a wide range of indigenous experiences for your delegates to learn, share and participate in.
A Welcome to Country allows an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander custodian to welcome visitors to their land through speech, song, dance, or ceremony. Recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, the nation’s First Peoples and custodians of the land, with welcome and acknowledgement protocols at your event. EXHIBITIONS AND TOURS Aboriginal Tent Embassy: Founded on Australia Day 1972, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy was set up by four Indigenous Australians – Michael Anderson, Billy Craigie, Tony Coorey and Bertie Williams – protesting the McMahon government’s approach to Indigenous land rights. Today, the embassy is permanently established on the lawns outside Old Parliament House and has come to represent Indigenous Australians’ quest for sovereignty and the right to self-determination. Australian Parliament House: Join the ‘Yeribee’ Indigenous experiences of Parliament House tour to hear the stories of Indigenous parliamentarians, gain insights into how Australia’s First Peoples participate in the nation’s democratic processes, and enjoy significant artworks from the Parliament House Art Collection by celebrated Indigenous artists. Tour available daily, free admission. Dhawura Aboriginal Cultural Tours: Travel back in time to become part of ‘The Dreaming’ and gain a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture with an experienced Aboriginal guide. Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (TOAC): Offers bespoke cultural education sessions for groups to learn about the land and its ancient history, share traditional food and talk about life for Indigenous people in Australia today.

Museum of Australian Democracy: Follow the journey of First Nation Australians in their search for equality. Learn about the Wiradjuri elders who travelled 150kms to attend the opening of Old Parliament House, the activists who have campaigned for a voice in Federal Parliament, and the accomplishments of Neville Bonner, the first Aboriginal Australian to be elected to parliament. First Nations people should be aware that this tour includes names and images of deceased people. The tour must be booked prior to visiting. National Arboretum Canberra: The Mununja Garden, shaped in a butterfly form, located in the Gallery of Gardens at the Arboretum tells a Dreamtime story from the Ngunnawal people that has been passed through generations for thousands of years. Ngala Tours provides Indigenous tours and experiences including Discovery bus tours and immersive cultural experiences such as Walk on Country and Discover Art and Country tours. National Triangle: Take a self-guided tour through the artwork at Reconciliation Place. Located in the heart of the National Triangle, these artworks symbolically and physically place Reconciliation at the heart of the nation. National Gallery First Nations Art: Immerse yourself in the largest and most comprehensive First Nations Art Collection in the world. Take a guided tour with one of our experienced volunteer guides and learn more about Indigenous culture and art. National Museum of Australia: First Australians is displayed over two floors and includes Talking Blak to History Exhibition. The museum’s First Australians Tour presents Indigenous history, culture, and connection to Country in the building’s largest exhibition space. Canberra boasts an enviable location, close to everything and right in the heart of some of the most picturesque places in Australia. COOL CLIMATE WINE REGION It was a few scientists who decided to plant the initial vines in the surrounds of Canberra many decades ago. These days, the Canberra District Wine Region is home to 140 vineyards and more than 30 boutique cellar doors, and has firmly cemented a reputation for creating some of Australia’s best cool-climate wines. The climate creates the perfect conditions for both shiraz and riesling, which are the area’s standout varietals, but there are plenty of lesser-known varieties and blends to explore. Taste your way through wines at Contentious Character in Wamboin, or delegates can sip and sleep amongst the vines at Tallagandra Hill Winery in Gundaroo. For a VIP group, head to Shaw Wines in Murrumbateman for a dining and tasting experience in the private cellar dining room.
CANBERRA REGION
Canberra is known as the bush capital for a reason – no matter where you are, green spaces or nature reserves are never far away. Close to town, a short but heart-pumping hike up Mount Ainslie or Black Mountain will reward you with panoramic views over the capital in every direction. A bit further afield, Namadgi National Park and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve offer spots for walking, biking, fishing, animal spotting or exploring archaeological sites dating back over 21,000 years.
CANBERRA REGION
NATIONAL PARKS AND NATURE RESERVES
Nearby, delegates can also experience a tour of the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, which forms part of NASA’s Deep Space Network. SOUTHERN TABLELANDS Take a short drive from Canberra City in any direction and you’ll stumble across charming country towns steeped in history. You can shop for locally crafted goods, explore art, or settle in for home-made treats in Yass or Bungendore. Taste your way around the local wines, chocolates, and other delicacies in Murrumbateman, feel like you’ve stepped back in time in the quaint town of Braidwood, or be amazed by 400-million-year-old rock formations in the caverns of Wombeyan Caves. CANBERRA SOUTH COAST Take a step back from a busy conference program with a trip to the south coast, just two hours’ drive from Canberra. Stretching from Jervis Bay right down the Sapphire Coast, it’s a region of unspoilt coastline, and an undeniably relaxed pace. Here delegates can stay at Lincoln Downs Resort and indulge in fresh, local oysters, meander through historic villages, swim at white sandy beaches, whale watch from the shore, and experience Indigenous culture. The area boasts more than 30 national parks, and marine and nature reserves offering an idyllic spot to reconnect with nature. For a conference venue with a difference, the architecturally designed Willinga Park at Bawley Point offers sophisticated spaces with a leafy outlook. ALPINE ADVENTURES Just 2.5 hours drive south of Canberra, Australia’s Alpine region is a must-visit for snow enthusiasts, with some of the best skiing and snowboarding opportunities in the country across the slopes of Perisher, Thredbo, Guthega, Charlotte Pass and the family-friendly Selwyn Snowfields. But there’s also plenty to do once the snow melts. It’s an area flush with world-class mountain biking trails, crystal clear streams for fishing, and untouched bushland to discover on horseback. For those keen to explore on foot and enjoy the crisp mountain air, head out on a hunt for wildflowers, or tackle Australia’s highest peak and hike to the top of Mount Kosciuszko. Afterwards, take a dip at the natural thermal pool at the caves of Yarrangobilly. For events and boutique accommodation, Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa is a picturesque place for delegates to meet, work, or unwind.
