Written CBN’s mission statement, “to prepare the nations of the world for the coming of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth”, is a statement of our individual mission as Jesus followers too.

I’m guessing you’ve known Him long enough to understand that He chooses to use ordinary people like you and me to expand His Kingdom and change the world. We get to play a key role, no matter our age or stature, in the greatest (com)mission there ever was!

This year, CBN South Africa is once again determined to push forward with this in innovative ways all over Southern Africa – on the air (production and broadcast), on the ground (training and events, humanitarian aid, and community projects) and online (digital evangelism and discipleship). This proclamation and demonstration of God’s Kingdom in Southern Africa only happens through honest, creative, Godly partnerships.

to invest in and be part of CBN’s ongoing mission.

A Burning Calling CBN’s ultimate “why” is to achieve a time in history when “the knowledge of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea.” The spiritual roots and heritage of CBN’s unique ministry is a powerful story of authentic faith in action, rooted in a constantly growing vision and understanding of His purposes. As with many other significant ministries, CBN was birthed out of an individual with an unshakeable ‘holy discontent’ – a gnawing dissatisfaction with possessions, success and ‘ordinary life’. As Pat Robertson responded to this growing feeling within him and started to move towards what he began to recognize as God’s call, he prayed prayers like this one: “Oh God, tell me what to do.

I’m so inexperienced in Your ways. Lead me. Guide me.”

And God did guide him. As you may know, Pat’s burning desire to serve God was soon focused into starting a TV station which he had no money for, and knew almost nothing about.

to a tiny broken-down station building and was depositing the first $3 CBN partner contribution into the new ministry account, which he rather audaciously called “Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc.” Pat was able to see beyond his daily challenges, failures and even successes. The vision for CBN was not primarily based on what he saw or knew or had – it was based on what God saw, what God knew, what God had. He dedicated enough time with His Father and made enough intentional sacrifice to ensure that he started to see his unique potential and calling the way that God did. “I knew these were not just desires, but actual prophetic longings which God had placed on my heart”.

He had his ‘WHY’ and he worked hard every day towards what God had put inside him to do.

us, or are we going to arise and be more like thermostats – understanding and then causing change to the atmosphere around us?

We at CBN SA are determined to be people of true, vibrant, ‘useful’ faith, and therefore a blessing to the people of Southern Africa.

We want to be telling more and more exciting stories of what God is doing on the air, on the ground and online, but we are even more eager to become part of His life-changing stories.

And stories alongside Jesus will seldom be easy… but they will never be boring! Each of us in our team wants to be known more for what we’re for than for what we’re against. We want to be shapers of the future, not mere commentators, and judges of the present.

So, again, as we get stuck into another year filled with challenge, hope and opportunity, I want to say a big thank you.

Thank you for being part of this mission to bring our Lord’s truth and blessing to the diverse, people across our region with innovation and excellence – on the air, on the ground and online.

Operation Blessing Ministry Update Things have been heating up here recently for Operation Blessing, both literally and figuratively.

In Malawi, November was bean harvesting month for the Cultivate project farmers. The 4kg bag of bean seeds they each received and planted in August and September has proven to be an extremely fruitful harvest.

These beans will now be sold to provide these farmers with an income they would not normally have during the dry season.

These families can now afford to serve three meals a day and send their children to school - all because of the Cultivate project!

During this project we have also seen so many of the participants coming to know Jesus and Bible study groups starting in the villages. What an incredible testimony of what God is doing in these rural villages around Malawi.

OB recently partnered with one of our local partners - Hands & Feet, and through a generous donation by Build It, we were able 05

to provide and build homes for a few families in the Masincedane informal settlement in Cape Town. The Hope Men, a ministry within Hands & Feet, showed their strength and dedication to their community and together we put up these wooden homes for the families who lost everything in the fire.

With the recent rains and flooding across the country and especially here in the Western Cape, OB took food and clothing up to George.

We delivered these relief packs to multiple soup kitchens who were running full-steam to provide food to many of the families in poorer communities who had been affected by the terrible flooding.

Lastly, we are excited to be finishing up our annual project funding applications for the next fiscal year. We have the privilege of working with such amazing people and organisations across Southern Africa. We look forward with anticipation to see what God has in store for the next year of partnership with these great organisations.

Superbook Updates Wow - what a year it has been! Here are some exciting updates from last year and leading into the new year. Thank you for your prayer and support. It is through your continued support that we can raise strong, healthy, and moral leaders for our nation’s future.

Superbook Community Screening with Hands & Feet On the 8th and 9th of November 2021 we collaborated with one of our partner organisations, Hands & Feet, bringing a very special screening of Superbook to the community’s children in Strandfontein. Hands & Feet runs Superbook as part of their after-school programme. They saw the need to do a special screening where they could invite the children of the community who were not a part of their after-school programme. It was a special time for the children and they got to meet Gizmo. We value partnerships such as these as they ensure the longevity of the Superbook programme long after the screening.

Superbook Training with YWAM South Africa We felt extremely privileged to host a workshop on the 19th of November with YWAM (Youth with a Mission). The purpose of the workshop was to encourage young missionaries-in-training to use Superbook as a resource 07

in reaching children for Christ in communities. We are hoping for more opportunities to influence young missionaries in the future in partnership with YWAM. It’s through these partnerships that we can begin to advocate for the prioritisation of children’s spiritual development in different church communities.

Superbook at the V&A Waterfront Screening Superbook’s The First Christmas episode outdoors at the V&A Waterfront (one of Africa’s biggest tourist attractions) in December was a spectacular public proclamation of the Gospel.

We are one of very few organisations that have been invited back to the amphitheatre since the start of Covid-19. We maximised this opportunity by inviting children from some of our partner organisations in disadvantaged communities, sponsoring their food and transport for the day. For many of these children, this is the only real Christmas celebration they will have this year. They were joined by hundreds of other children and parents from the general public over two consecutive days. We are in awe of God and the favour He has given to enable us to introduce Him in spaces where people least expect it. He was in every smile, dance move and connection made. Breaking into our ordinary existence just like He did on that very first Christmas!

Why does Orphan’s Promise do what we do? Because of children like Nicci.

The Chawafarira family was part of the second intake of the Keeping Families Together (KFT) programme in Zimbabwe, which finished in March 2021. When the family joined the programme in October 2019, Nicci was 11 years old and was in Grade 5. At that age she knew that her family was part of a programme, but she did not really understand what it all meant. It is now two years later and Nicci is 13 years old - her growth during 09

these past two years has been incredible!

Apart from entrepreneurship and other focus areas, the KFT programme also focusses on spiritual development and families are visited on a regular basis and mentored through discipleship. It was during one of these home visits that both Nicci and her mom gave their lives to Jesus and joined Life Church Zimbabwe. Since then,

they have been on a journey of discipleship with the Life Church volunteers and their lives changed for the better. Even though their KFT intake officially ended in March 2021 they are still part of the Keeping Families Together Programme and Nicci’s mother is now a volunteer in the local church.

It is very encouraging to see how much Nicci and her mom have grown, especially spiritually since they joined the KFT programme.

Nicci is now a teenager and the investment that was made into her life during every home visit and all of the mentorship hours over two years, is clearly starting to show beautifully. Nicci has joined the Kids Life children’s ministry at church and is an active member and a wonderful example to other children.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) Are you feeling encouraged after reading this beautiful story? What is your why? Have you found your way yet?

Recently, Nicci was given the opportunity to share a message with the church. She shared a Scripture that left the congregants encouraged. Nicci would not have accepted Christ, share the Word of God publicly, be an example to others, and her mother would not be a volunteer at the local church if it were not for the Keeping Families Together programme.

Nicci and her mothers’ lives and destinies were changed forever.

The Impact of Our Why Written

From a really young age we all want to know the why behind what we see, what we hear and what we do. I’m sure we all know those kids - or we were the one who always asked why. Why are we going this way dad? Why is the sky blue? Why can’t I have another piece of chocolate?

The why is always inside of us. Sometimes we aren’t fully aware of it, but the why is what drives our lives.

I think of it as the engine of a car. The power, the movement, the drive all comes from the engine. It’s often not even visible, but it’s there, and without it, the car 11

is just a pile of metal. Without it, you can’t go exploring. You can’t experience new sights in your car. Without the engine, your car is well… pointless. A pile of metal.

It’s interesting to me that we often ask new people we’ve just met what they do for a living. It’s usually only when we get to know them a bit better though, their personality, their background, that we get to the “why”. I wonder if this is because our why feels more personal to us? Or maybe because it’s often hidden beneath the surface, and we ourselves don’t even know it’s there?

In my journey with God, I have found that He often starts with the why too. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” I believe that when we put the why before the what, we live from a place of vision and purpose. On top of that, when we open our hearts up for God to speak into the why, the what becomes how we live out our why. It is our step of faith and obedience. To know the why gives vision and purpose to our what. The why trumps the what ALL the time!

To use another analogy… ‘the what’ is you holding a loaded rifle blindfolded. Sure, you can fire the gun and a bullet will come out, which may or may not actually hit something. But

taking the blindfold off and looking through the sights on the rifle, suddenly your target becomes clear and the bullet does what it is made to do. Hit it’s mark!

What is your why?

What drives you forward?

Where is God pointing your rifle?

I want to encourage you to pursue your why with God. Ask Him to show you your beautiful and unique why.

It may feel intimidating or overwhelming but know that God has made you and you are wonderfully and fearfully made by Him (Psalm 139) and He wants to show you your why.

Story Telling to Restore Dignity Written

Jesus was an incredible storyteller, and, in many ways, that has helped shape the way I view story telling. He told stories to teach lessons, to get people to think, to demonstrate the power of the truth in love, and so much more. Last year I started studying psychology with the purpose of helping people tell their stories with the intention of healing, of being restored to wellbeing. I truly believe that Jesus used stories to not only teach us, but to demonstrate the power of our stories.

Another lesson I’ve learnt from Jesus is from His encounter with the woman at the well (John 4). The woman knew she had sinned, and Jesus knew it too, yet He didn’t turn from her sin or make her feel ashamed about it. He chatted to her and at the end of the conversation, embraced her.

He embraced the outcast.

Watching this encounter unfold while watching The Chosen (a series on YouTube that I’d highly recommend) really blew my mind. Our 13

communication with others, Christian or not, should leave them feeling loved. And if God wills it, it should make them run around telling people about His goodness and truth.

In my role, I get to help people tell their stories. Whether it’s an email about a new event, a social media post about our latest campaign, or a This is Me recording... All the communications I do is in some way telling a story, giving a voice to people who otherwise wouldn’t tell their stories. The projects we do and the organisations we work with are largely to restore dignity, to give people voices, to love people practically.

And by running a campaign, giving an update or showing a video... We’re telling the story of people who Jesus loves unconditionally – outcasts or not.

And that is work that gets me excited. It’s not just work, it’s Kingdom work. And you and I are doing it together.

This is why I do what I do.

This is my “why”. We will get to what I do later, but my “why” is more important than my “what”. I do what I do because of my “why”, and I would encourage you to think of your “why” while reading mine and if your “what” does not line up with your “why” maybe it’s time to make a change.

My “why” drives me. It’s what gets me excited. It makes me get out bed and helps me create new things, to keep pushing. My “why” also defines my “what”.

If someone was to ask me for a simple version of my “why” it would be this; “The reason why I do what I do is because my life does not belong to me”. I am where I am today out of obedience to Christ and His teachings. These are the foundation to my “why”. My “what” may change, and most certainly will at some point, but my “why”, will not.

Don’t let your “what” define your “why”.

Accounting with a divine purpose

Written “Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.” (Read Matthew 24:14-30) The Kingdom of God needs financial stewards who are not working for the salary they get, but for the impact their stewardship has in the Kingdom now and for eternity.

One of the dilemmas accountants face is finding direct impact due to the nature of their work to the mission of the organisations they work for, apart from their responsibly to manage funds. Though I have worked for awesome organisations with great missions making great impact in the world, the tendency to get lost in figures, policies and procedures and not paying much attention to the real mission of the organisation cannot be denied.

Before I joined CBN, I felt the Holy Spirit calling me to make a more meaningful use of my skills. At the time, I was working for an NGO with an awesome cause, but not a Kingdomoriented one. I got into a space 15

where I started realising that my job as an accountant must have purpose for eternity more than just for the transformation it does on earth - as important as that is. As a child of God, I believe whatever I do should be translated into advancing the Kingdom of God. I felt it was time to invest my experience and skills into the Kingdom if I must work as an accountant.

Though currently I am a missionary and a minister of the Word in the local church, I still wanted my day job to be part of my spiritual assignment and not just a job. So, for a year and six months, I had no peace in my heart as the Holy Spirit highlighted the fact that I must make the choice of serving the Kingdom with my skills. I said this prayer, “Lord, if I must work, then let me work in an organisation that has as mission to get the Gospel out there so men can be saved”. Within a week or two of saying this prayer, I saw a post

that required the candidate to subscribe to the mission of CBN. I was intrigued to find out what the mission was, so I did some research. I had goosebumps when I found out that the mission was to prepare the nations for the coming of Jesus Christ. This was the green light that the Lord was serious about the promptings I have had in my spirit for a long time. Long story short, I applied for the job and by the working of the Lord, I was appointed as the Finance and HR Manager of CBN South Africa.

In my role as the Finance Manager of CBN South Africa, I’m not just responsible for the financial health of the organisation. I am responsible for ensuring that the Kingdom-purpose of CBN South Africa is fulfilled through my financial management and accountability input. Therefore, the work of evangelising to the nations and preparing them for the coming of the Lord Jesus is my assignment through kingdom financial stewardship.

My perspective has changed; the figures now have purpose.

I have the privilege of being the manager of heavenly funds and ensuring that they are used for God’s mission and managed with integrity, compliance accuracy, etc, to the glory of the Lord.

Therefore, one thing I believe is no matter what academic qualifications, skills or experience you have achieved in life, it can be converted into Kingdom work. That’s what it is for me and my job at CBN. My why is to ensure that the Gospel of Jesus Christ, through CBN in South Africa, reaches the nations through the vehicle of proper financial accountability, sustainability, management and compliance. I see my job beyond figures, I see my job as something tangible – men and women coming to Jesus, children taught to know Jesus from a tender age, people set free from addictions as they watch the testimonies of others through our productions and media ministry.

I am Enih Sone, I am championing, inspiring, and enhancing a productive environment of kingdom financial and human resource administration and accountability in all accuracy, transparency, integrity, sustainability, and growth through spiritual support, excellent financial systems and compliance with statutory financial and labour regulations.

Dear friends of CBN SA Written

Thanks to your monthly support, we’ve made great strides in helping those less fortunate in our communities and Southern Africa as a whole. As you read through this first edition of Arise 2022, I hope that you will be deeply encouraged by the lifesaving victories and advances that your generosity has made possible.

It was a privilege to meet and pray with some of you at the online CBN SA partner events last year and I really hope that we can connect in person this year. I thank God for the body of Christ that He has established after all these years through The 700 Club.

Because of friends like you, we can continue to do what God has commissioned us to do to share the Gospel and make disciples of the nations. As I write this I think of the story of Moses, where the Lord spoke to Moses in Exodus 25:1-9 about building a sanctuary for the Lord.

The Lord spoke to Moses: “Tell the Israelites to take an offering for me; from every person whose heart makes him willing you are to receive my offering. This is the offering you are to receive from 17

them: gold, silver, bronze, blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goat’s hair, ram skins dyed red, fine leather, acacia wood, oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for fragrant incense, onyx stones, and other gems to be set in the ephod and in the breast piece. Let them make for me a sanctuary, that I may live among them. According to all that I am showing you—the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furnishings—you must make it exactly so.”

What an amazing display of ‘community coming together’ as they build the sanctuary.

The Bible says that they came together with their skills and offerings, so much so that Moses had to ask the people to stop as there was more than enough.

Moses instructed them to take his message throughout the camp, saying, “Let no man or woman do any more work for the offering for the sanctuary.”

So the people were restrained from bringing any more. Now the materials were more than enough for them to do all the work.

The people responded incredibly well to Moses’ obedient request

that was given by the Lord.

The rabbis find a difference in “whose heart stirred him up” and “whose spirit was willing” (Ex 35:21). Those who were willing, they say, brought what was required. This is good. But those whose heart stirred them were more generous, giving more than their obligation. This was the better way.

I’d like to say thank you for having such ‘a willing spirit’ to sow into the work that CBN SA does. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centred. Love them anyway.

People favour underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.

Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.

Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.

Leading Superbook Mzansi Written Influencing children’s worldview, character, and moral judgement through the Bible.

“For this is the covenant that I will make with you after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” (Jeremiah 31:33) I have been listening to a podcast lately by Dr Haiser, an Old Testament Biblical scholar.

There is a phrase that he used in one episode that has been on my mind and has kind of stuck “God wants a human family; He has His spiritual family, but He wants a human one… The world as we know it is a mess, but He would rather us go through the pain, anguish, the suffering, the joy and everything in between than to spend eternity without us which is the other option” (paraphrased).

This revelation of God’s unwavering commitment to restoring our hearts and reconciling a human family to Himself, that would love and obey Him in a manner that He deserves is the reason why Superbook exists. We see our job as being vessels that proclaim the Good News of the Gospel through the Bible 19

and working alongside the Holy Spirit in fulfilling Jeremiah 31:33.

Providing children and parents alike with an exciting, mediarich and immersive experience of the Bible so that His law may be within them, so that it may be written on their hearts.

We believe the best way to do this is by being part of children’s social framework, using multimedia products such as the Bible App, website, DVD’s, TV broadcasting and more.

Reaching families, caregivers, and communities through our various programmes. We want the Bible to be the content that influences children’s worldview, impacts character, and informs their moral judgement. The best way for us to do that is by being where they are.

We are also passionate about serving the church community as a whole through training and empowering children’s ministry leaders with resources that assist them in ministering to children effectively.

We prepare the world for the coming King by focusing on children and allowing them to become our partners in this glorious mission. A big Thank YOU as our partners for making this possible.

How do I know the Holy Spirit is within me?

You can sense the power of the Holy Spirit. The Bible says in Isaiah 30:21 (NIV), Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

When the Holy Spirit is within you, He will talk to you in that still, small voice that leads you into all truth. If you don’t have that voice within you, I would question it and ask God to give it to you.

I’ve written a book on the Holy Spirit. It talks about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and who He is and where He came from. If the Holy Spirit is within you, you will feel the presence of God and know His Spirit is within you.
