officially accepted His invitation to dive into this new season. It is very exciting, but it will also be very difficult uprooting from all that we have here – our family, our friends, our church, our amazing workplaces, and the beauty and diversity of this incredible country that will always be so close to our hearts. As I reflect on my time with CBN, I have such an overwhelming sense of gratitude for what the Lord has done in and around me! A few personal highlights that jump to mind: - The Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg Partner Events we hosted in 2018 and 2019, where I had the privilege of meeting and praying with many of you in person. I have such mixed feelings as I write this farewell message and prepare to leave this exhilarating role at CBN – and also prepare to leave this country which I love so deeply. Six years ago the Lord gave me the immense opportunity and privilege of leading CBN Southern Africa. Wow, it has been such an incredible journey! The satisfaction of seeing a highcapacity team grow around me, the constant flow of tiring yet very rewarding work, forming amazing relationships with partners and missional people all around Africa, the chance to travel to many different parts of the world… and a safe space to develop as a person, as a disciple and as a leader. From September I have been invited to serve as the outreach Pastor at a missional Baptist Church in Australia. It is a big faith move for our family, but my wife Shélagh and I can clearly see how, over these past 3 years, the Lord has gently and uniquely led us to get to this point. In May, with the blessing of my CBN International leaders, we Shalom – hello and goodbye W ritten by i an W alton 03

I am comforted that wherever you or I go, whatever He has placed in our hands to do, whichever challenges we are all facing right now – He is with each one of us as Father. And He will bring us all together again as one great family in the life to come, with unimaginable freedom and joy! Until then, I leave you with a Scripture that has encouraged me deeply, and often.

Operation Blessing’s food security programme in Malawi, ‘Cultivate’, had an exciting visit from Eyal David, the ambassador of Israel to Morocco ( formerly designated to Malawi, Kenya, Mauritius and Tanzania). The visit was part of an Israeli Development project focused on accelerating social and economic transformation in developing countries. The aim of this project is to contextualise Israel’s successful cooperative farming programmes by means of skills transfer and business coaching. As part of the project, they were featured in the development programmes’ annual reportMASHAV (pictured below). This is an incredible opportunity for all that are involved in the Cultivate programmes. We’re excited to see how the skills they learn transform their lives and their own spheres of influence. Friends like you make projects like these possible. Without it, Cultivate may never have started and these lives would not be transformed for the Kingdom. We’re excited to see what awaits us next with Cultivate and more food security projects like it! Please continue sharing our stories and follow us on social media - @cbnsouthafrica.

Herental Foundation (above), based in Masiphumelele in Cape Town, works with learners who are refugees or migrants. They assist them with catching up to the South African school curricullum and provide them with educational opportunities if they are unable to attend school here. They also run youth groups and minister to the kids as part of the programme. Again, we wouldn’t have been able to assist them if it wasn’t for your Kingdomgenerosity!

We were recently gifted a large donation that enabled us to purchase a wide variety of Bibles - in different languages and for different age groups. Since then, we’ve been given amazing opportunities to come alongside other organisations who need Bibles to empower their discipleship programme attendees and learners. The first organisation we came alongside was Purpose Finder Academy (below) in Montagu Gardens, Cape Town. They contacted us to see if we could assist them and thankfully we could! We donated some of the Bibles to them, according to their language needs. They are SO thankful for the Bibles. We really couldn’t do any of this without your generosity that enables us to be available to those who need us in South Africa.

Superbook in Malawi

“Since praying together, God has opened doors in this community since we distributed the parcels for flood victims. Daily, God is adding numbers to the club. Thank you CBN...we continue believing for more disciples.” - Jarvis

It is such a great honour and privilege to be hosting Superbook screenings and clubs in Malawi. Our two Superbook representatives have been doing magnificent work to spread the Gospel in remote areas of Malawi. Earlier this year, Malawi experienced terrible flooding due to a cyclone. Our Operation Blessing team visited the affected areas to help with disaster relief. This paved a way for the establishment of Superbook in the area, and since then, it has been flourishing.

“Good evening family. We are grateful that we have found a building in the village of Chadzunda where we will be having Superbook screenings and children discipleship. We have just started renting it. Please continue praying for the team that I have been equipping and serving.” -Jarvis We are grateful for the work that is being established in Malawi. We continually pray for more harvest.

superbook updates

We love equipping other organisations to enable them to utilise Superbook in their sphere of influence. This forms part of our strategic goals - to see Superbook expand in the region through strong partnerships across the Southern African region. Therefore, we were so excited to receive an invitation from one of our partners, Jacques Neethling from Bonnievale in the Western Cape, to take part in one of the Christian outreach events that he was organising in the area. We supplied him with some Superbook material and Gizmo made an appearance on the day of the event to the delight of the children that were present. Our aim is to come alongside more individuals and organisations by equipping and empowering them with the resources needed to reach children with the Gospel.

We’re so excited to announce the launch of Superbook Academy in South Africa! This digital platform allows individuals, churches, schools, and more, to purchase the curriculum as a tool to empower Wechildren.believe this can be so powerful in various contexts. Contending for bibliCal truth in a World of relativism

In a world of my truth, your truth and our truth… How do we begin to assert that there is an objective truth that transcends our thoughts, opinions, and experiences? More than this, how do we present the Bible as being literature with objectively true claims? How do we begin to assert that “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:24) as a reality without it being dismissed as an opinion or subjective truth? I ask these questions as a person who has not arrived at any definite conclusion, but as one who believes that the proclamation of truth plays a big role in our mission to prepare the world for the coming of Jesus Christ.

A King who is coming to judge the world based on the truth presented in the Bible. Verifying the truth in the Bible

W ritten by y olanda m agida

According to an article written by Nathan Baird (2019) on the Gospel as objective truth, it’s important that we know that the truth claims made in the Bible are not just “our truths” but can be examined rationally. He goes on to say that the events of the Gospel are historical events that have eyewitnesses, therefore they can be examined like any other historical claim and eyewitness testimonies can be verified against one another.

The discussion of truth is a highly contested one. Some believe that truth is subjective and there is no absolute truth. While others believe that truth can be independent of one’s opinion, feeling and ideas and is therefore objective, e.g., one plus one is two irrespective of your opinion. Relativism is an ideology that holds a belief that ethical truths depend on the individuals and groups holding them (Merriam and Webster, 2022). In other words, truth becomes what you make of it. Relativism as our ideology

This ideology, I believe, has become so embedded in our culture today that it has affected how the Gospel is shared, ministered, and even 11

secretly believe that they are subjective rather than objective. According to Paul the Apostle, if you as a believer do not think that Christ has been raised from the dead as a verifiable fact, then your faith is worthless (1 Cor 15:17). Sharing Biblical truth through Superbook

We believe that it is absolutely crucial to equip and train children to know and be confident in their knowledge of the Gospel’s objective truths. This is why every Superbook episode has a special historical background video that anchors children with historical facts and archeological studies relating to the Bible story. It is one of the many ways in which we are fulfilling our very broad mission of preparing the world for the coming of Jesus. We want the next generation to be able to defend the objective truths of the Bible in a world of relativism. do W n load t he a pp !

communicated. I love personal testimonies that people share of how they received Christ. They are powerful, they give hope and Iencouragement.oftenwonder, though, if we haven’t replaced the sharing of the Gospel with the sharing of personal testimonies. I also wonder if testimonies are communicating to people that the Gospel is more of a subjective truth over an objective one. Testimonies are powerful because no one can argue with personal experiences, but personal experiences can’t be proven. It’s important to give an account and be knowledgeable of why we believe what we believe, not just basing it on subjective personal experiences alone but on objective truth claims that the Bible affirms. As mentioned in the above, Gospel truth claims can be examined and verified like any historical document. I think one of the reasons why we don’t confidently assert some of the Biblical truth claims is that we

I set out for Kitwe and the first to receive me was my aunt who is a widow. She lost her husband 12 years ago and has been staying alone for quite a long time since then. After staying with her for 7 months, she called me one day and asked me to contribute resources towards the running of the home. I was 15 then and I asked her how that would be possible at my age and with school. She told me to “do what your friends do at night and make sure you learn to fend for Iyourself!”couldnot believe I was hearing this from an adult who is supposed to protect me. So I ran away and found solace at a church member’s home in the police camp. When all of this was happening, I explained it to the church elders who advised me to leave her alone and find somewhere else to live. They tried asking members of my congregation and one offered to take me in as The truth is - there is nothing ordinary about you. You are the child of the King and your story is significant!

My name is Queen. I am 19 years old and the firstborn in a family of 7. I live in a police camp in Kitwe, Zambia, but go to Kalulushi for school. This is because I have no one to help me relocate to Kalulushi where I found a place in a school. It so happened that when I sat for my grade seven examination, my parents divorced and I was left in a dilemma as to where I will find sponsorship for my daughter of the k ing! school fees.

One day, in 2019, I visited Kalulushi and that was the beginning of better things for me! I was told there was an organisation in Chibote by the name of Orphan’s Promise that was helping children. After explaining my ordeal to Mr Mathias, who is the headmaster at the school, he told me to wait until he visited my new family in Kitwe to discuss modalities and the possibility of assistance. He asked me to rewrite grade seven at Chibote school and he volunteered to keep me under review during that period. My results came out and I qualified to grade 8! I was put into the Orphan’s Promise support programme. I received support for two years from 2020 to 2021. I graduated to Grade 10 and today my life has changed completely as I can get free education. Had it not been for Orphan’s Promise, my life would be very different as I would have had to continue working as a maid with no education, or worse still, as a sex worker. I want to encourage other girls out there to never lose hope as the Lord God is an all-seeing God and will bring salvation and help to those who trust in Him.

Pride Month entails celebrating the victories the LGBTQ+ community has won for their advancement to live freely as they chooseregardless of their sexuality or gender identity. Towards the end of May, one of our trusted partners sent us a message asking what we were going to do to speak truth into Pride Month. In the book of Luke, He said, “You can’t keep your true self hidden forever; before long you’ll be exposed. You can’t hide behind a religious mask forever; sooner or later the mask will slip and your true face will be known” (MSG). This Scripture tells us that we need to ask ourselves if are we authentically living and following Jesus. “The Gospel” is a term we use a lot as believers. But let’s dig deeper… The Gospel is the good news of the loving, redemptive work that Christ has done and living out the authentiC gospel W ritten by m eagan t aylor

freely offers to all people, to save them from sin and ultimately total separation from God the Father. In its broadest sense, with the good news of salvation remaining at the core, the Gospel is a full embodiment of the person and work of Christ in His church, and the full revelation of God’s Word. How we apply this to our lives means that we are to be the salt and light of the earth, affirming full Biblical truth, and teaching a Christian worldview that deals with morality and being 17

helping those who have been neglected when no one else would help (Luke 10), feeding the poor and needy in the name of Jesus, and speaking up for those who can’t speak up for themselves. Ultimately, it means loving God and our neighbours. God assures us that Christianity is not about perfection. Rather, it is about engaging in an honest process of clinging to and becoming more like Jesus Christ every single day. If you feel challenged as you read this, it’s probably a sign that you need to embrace authenticity more. Authentic Christians don’t pretend they are perfect people. As Christians we mess up, but when we do, we come before God with repentant hearts and we hold onto the grace of God. This allows us to extend His grace to others. I believe we need to keep the Psalmist’s prayer in our hearts that says “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life” (Psalm 139:2324). Our children and those that surround us are longing for a personification of what it means to be an authentic follower of Jesus – someone who can say, “Keep in step with me as I strive to keep in step with Jesus.” What we really need are Christians who, like Jesus, are filled with grace and truth. Q& a With pat robertson

Why would God do all those things to Job if he was such a good man?

Job is an example of those of us who know God. When we’re under some kind of persecution, if we persevere and say though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him - it’s that declaration of faith that wins.

Job said, “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him” (Job 13:15 KJV) - and later God gave Job twice what he had before. He went through a period of suffering, but it wasn’t long. It was less than a year. And when it was over, God gave him double what he lost.

Job is one of the oldest books in the Bible. Why did he go through such agony? Because God was using Job as an example of somebody who was true to Him.
