within topics such as worker rights, creating affordability and security of black cultural spaces. I found this organization

incredibly important as it connects current issues to the built environment and works towards creating a more comfortable place for not only the workers but also the community.

Crafting Cubes and Cylinders

Over the course of Design 1 the students were assigned different

materials to create a cube and/or cylinder out of, in addition to a drafted illustration of their product. This assignment was used as an opportunity to become more comfortable with axonometric drawings and adding shadow, as well as crafting a sturdy, visually pleasing product.

Crafting Cubes and Cylinders

As time went on they started assignments that would allow more creativity and problem solving when it came to crafting the cubes. For example, the "Irregular Shape" cubes such as the plexiglass product seen below was an opportunity to get creative, as well as the plaster cube which let the class explore different mediums.

Site Specific Intervention For this project we decided the main goal was to connect the community to the instillation. It was decided that the best way to do so would be through

interaction. An opportunity was created for people to post thoughts that they've been holding in, never got to tell someone, or simply that they need to get off their chest and send them off to relive some stress.

Topological Transformations This project required new techniques and creative thinking in order to create four similar shoes and a set of drawings, diagraming

what was built. The horizontal, vertical and egg crate shoe were each made out of cardboard and the fourth used biodegradable straws. This project caused focus on measurements and matching the

sizing to the original object as well as creating a similar shape out of a new material

Creating Patter, Color and Texture Project 3 required a unique stamp to be carved out of a rubber eraser, then to be used to create and play with patterns and the color wheel. The teardrop like shape was turned and layered to create a series of its own patterns.

Visual Hierarchy

The Hopi Wedding Plaque,

incorporated into traditional ceremonies by the Hopi Tribe, was used as inspiration to create the final 3D model. The textile was diagrammed and personally

Bend, Cut, Fold Project 5 started with a trip to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in which

each student chose a painting.

They took pieces from the art to inspire the Bas Relief and wooden model. The shapes, colors, and

This project proved the importance of using a sketch book to document thoughts and ideas. The book serves as an opportunity to collect and

organize thoughts to make a cleaner and more refined product.

Creating Space

The final project took the wooden model of project 5 and used that as a base for

one of the Italo Calvino Invisible Cities. In this specific project, the city Leonia was created. Leonia was a rather unique city, where the residents wake up to the city being wiped of yesterday, and all of the belongings to be thrown along the perimeter of the grounds. The buildup of waste creates a landslide which

is incorporated into the model with the shells of the city built into the structure, and texture showing the destruction of the trash.

Semester Reflection This semester caused my eyes to be opened to the many layers of the built environment, those which I was aware of previous

to schooling though not fully immersed in until I started to practice design in class. I was exposed to new drawing and drafting techniques to record my projects in a way I never knew I could and was pushed to use materials and tools that I never

would have before. I learned the influence of practice, preparation and precision when it came to craftsmanship and the affect that my time management has, on not only the visual aspect of my work but also the structural. For example, I saw the progression of my skills in the many cubes and cylinders we

constructed throughout the semester as I got more comfortable with my own creativity and ability. The final project pushed me to think outside of my comfort zone, as I was building my interpretation of a city in only a little over a

week. The experience brought more confidence to myself in the way of creativity and problem solving.
