e are in a CULTURE WAR. Yes, I said it.

The war that we are in is placing value on things that are most important.

You are here, and your child is here because MUSIC and BAND are important. The performing arts programs that are represented here permanently enrich the lives of young people through a commitment to youth development and performance excellence while providing enjoyment for our local community and audiences worldwide.

So I challenge each and every one of you. We have a tradition here at Cary High School, where EVERY GROUP deserves a STANDING OVATION for their achievements at the end of their performance. No matter the skill levels of the students and ensembles, no matter the “WOW” moments or “OOPS” moments you will hear and see today, EVERY band deserves a standing ovation.

If you are hyper-focused on competition and worried about giving appreciation to another band that you are “competing” with, don’t worry about it. There is nothing on the judge’s sheet that gives points to “did the audience stand up at the end”. :) EVERY band deserves a standing ovation at the end of their performance.

I hope that you will continue with this tradition. ALL the kids deserve it!!

October 13, 2023 Dear Friends and Participants of Cary Band Day: As the principal of Cary High School, it is with great privilege that I congratulate you on your decision to participate in the 64th Annual Cary Band Day. This year promises to be our most exciting and competitive year in over a decade. I am excited to be a part of this truly special day and I hope that you are too.

This year our school and entire town will host more than thirty high school bands from across North Carolina and Virginia. With so many bands from so many different locations we are guaranteed to have a wide range of creativity and showmanship. As the principal of Cary High, I speak from experience when I say that this is a terrific opportunity for students, directors, and parents to share their gifts and talents with an audience that loves music and appreciates the hard work and dedication that goes into getting ready for competition. In many ways it is a celebration of our young people and their desire to keep the tradition of music alive in our schools and across this great nation.

It is an honor to serve as the host school and I wish you the very best during this event. On behalf of the entire Cary High School community, I thank you and your supporters for your tireless efforts in traveling and preparing. November 4, 2023 On behalf of Cary, I would like to welcome you to the 64th Annual Cary Band Day! This year marks the 102nd anniversary of the Cary Band, which started in 1921. We are proud to host this event and welcome bands once again from North Carolina and Virginia. We wish the very best to all the participating bands. Cary Band Day is competitive, entertaining, and most importantly fun for everyone.

In October, we lost a Cary icon, Cary’s 34th Mayor and past president of the Cary Band Boosters, Koka Booth. We are thankful for Mayor Booth’s dedication, love, and leadership in Cary and the Cary Band Boosters.

I would like to commend each band, the individual band members, and the individual band directors on their hard work, dedication, and accomplishments leading them to this event.

PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING NOVEMBER 4, 2023AS THE 64th CARY BAND DAY WHEREAS, the Cary High School Band has proven its musical and marching abilities throughout the years by its continuing achievements of both national and regional recognition for its accomplishments.

WHEREAS, members of the Cary High School Band have brought much honor to Cary and its citizens while also maintaining high scholastic aptitudes.

WHEREAS, music plays and increasingly important role in our world

today. It is the language of all people and one of the greatest forces in creating peace and harmony.

WHEREAS, 2023 marks the 102nd anniversary of the Cary Band, which

started in 1921.

WHEREAS, In October, we lost a Cary icon, Cary’s 34th Mayor and past president of the Cary Band Boosters, Koka Booth. We are thankful for Mayor Booth’s dedication, love, and leadership in Cary and the Cary Band Boosters.

WHEREAS, the band has been proud to host for the past 65 years the greatest celebration of marching band and music education excellence in North Carolina.

102 Years of Cary Band

The Cary Band has amassed an impressive list of Regional and National awards and honors. They have marched in the Rose Bowl Parade twice, Orange Bowl parade participants, and in 2016, marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

In marching band competition, they have received hundreds of 1st place achievements both locally and nationally in the NC BandMasters Association, and Bands of America.

The Cary Band is proud to be celebrating their 102nd Anniversary, with the first Cary Band being formed in 1921.

Judge Bios Chief Judge

RICHARD HOLMES graduated from Winthrop University in Rock Hill,

SC in 1989 with a Bachelor of Music Education Degree. He studied with Dr. William Malambri while attending Winthrop. He also graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone with a Master of Music – concentration in Band Directing. While attending ASU, he studied with Dr. Jay Jackson and Dr. William Gora.

Mr. Holmes retired at the end of the 2017 – 2018 school year with 31 years of creditable service to the Public Schools of North and South Carolina. While teaching, bands under his direction have consistently earned “Superior” and “Excellent” ratings both for marching and concert band. Band programs under his direction also grew in numbers and quality as large numbers of students in his bands participated in activities such as All-County Honors Band, All-District Band, All-State Honors Band and Solo and Ensemble MPA. Mr. Holmes has served in many leadership roles during his teaching career. He served as Treasurer, Webmaster, Chair of the All-District Band Clinic and Chair for the High School Concert Band Music Performance Adjudication for the South Central District Bandmasters Association. He served as President and Secretary of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association and as President of the North Carolina Music Educators Association. He is currently serving as the Southern Division Representative on the National Association for Music Education’s Council for Band Education. Other professional memberships include: North Carolina Association of Educators, National Association for Music Education, North Carolina Music Educators Association, South Central District Bandmasters Association, American School Band Directors Association, National Band Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Some of Mr. Holmes’ personal honors include receiving the 2004 Award of Excellence for the South Central District, being recognized by Who's Who Among America's Teachers for many years from nominations of former students. Mr. Holmes has also served as a clinician for several All-County Honor Bands in North Carolina and has judged marching band and concert band assessments in North Carolina and Virginia.

Mr. Holmes is currently serving as an Educational representative for Music & Arts in the Charlotte, NC area.

Music General Effect

BEN HYLTON is an active composer, music educator, and clinician cur-

rently residing in Austin, Texas.

Ben arranges and composes music for all types of ensembles and commercial music groups as well as designs competitive shows for the pageantry arts. His works have been performed at the Midwest Clinic and shows have been successful at the local, regional, and national level. Ben's grasp of various musical genres enable him to create new music in a vast aray of styles.

Over the past 10 years Mr. Hylton has been an elementary music teacher, middle school, and high school band director in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida.

Ben's diverse teaching experiences guide the pedagogy and student appeal within his compositions and arrangements.

Ben was a member of the Blue Knights and the Blue Devils and has taught brass with The Madison Scouts, The Blue Knights, and The Phantom Regiment and visual with The Crossmen. Most recently, Ben served as the brass caption head for The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps from Tempe, AZ. Ben performed as a solo trumpeter throughout Southeastern United States and in the Caribbean and has performed with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Percy Sledge, Reggae-jazz artist Eugene Grey, Jazz Pianist Donald Brown, and with Carnival Cruise Lines, among many others.

Ben received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from East Carolina University, a Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and he completed additional graduate studies in Jazz at Florida State University.

Music Ensemble

MARTIN DICKEY is a native of Bristol, Va. and a graduate of East Tennesee State University in Johnson City, Dickey is currently in his twentieth year

as Director of Bands in Fort Mill, South Carolina. He earned a Master’s degree from South Oregon University through the American Band College in Ashland, Oregon, and a Master’s Degree in School Administration from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is a National Board Certified teacher.

Mr. Dickey taught at David Crockett High School in Jonesborough, Tenn. for nine years, and Fort Mill High School for thirteen years. In the fall of 2007, he became the Director of Bands at Nation Ford High School in Fort Mill, S.C. Bands under his direction have received numerous state, regional, and national awards at marching and concert events, including the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence and Certificate of Merit.

In 2011, the Nation Ford Band performed in the prestigious Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. For the past twenty-five years, bands under Mr. Dickey’s leadership have performed at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia, the Hula Bowl and First Night Celebration in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Lord Mayor’s New Year’s Day Parade in Pasadena, California, and for the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers.

Mr. Dickey is active as an adjudicator, clinician, drill designer, and consultant, in the United States and Europe, and is certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. He is a past-President of the South Carolina Band Directors Association and has served on the staff of the US Army AllAmerican High School Marching Band and the Bands of America Tournament of Roses Parade Honor Band. Mr. Dickey’s professional affiliations include the South Carolina Band Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, National Band Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.

Music Performance Individual

TONY ROBINSON A 1982 graduate of Western Carolina University,

Mr. Robinson began his teaching career as assistant band director at Enka High School in Asheville, N.C. In 1984, he became band director at his home school, Pisgah High School, in Canton, N.C. In 1987, Mr. Robinson accepted the position of Director of Bands at Cary High School. During his 13-year tenure, the Cary Band continued its strong tradition of excellence by winning numerous marching band awards, Grand Championships and Class recognitions.

The Cary Bands performed in the 1998 New Year’s Day Parade in London, England, as well as giving a concert performance in Wembly Hall. In April 2000, the Cary Bands were invited to return to Europe, performing a 10-day tour of concerts in Bruges, Belgium, Le-Touquet and Paris, France.

In 2000, Mr. Robinson started the band program at Wakefield Middle School in Raleigh, N.C. From its first year enrollment of 80 students, the band grew to over 225 members earning Superior and Excellent ratings at N.C. Musical Performance Assessments during his 10-year tenure.

From 2010-23 he was the Instrumental Director at the 500 student Franklin Academy Charter High School in Wake Forest, NC. He conducted the Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, 2 Percussion Ensembles, and piano class. The band began with 27 members and presently 75 members participate in 4 performing ensembles. The Franklin Academy Ensembles are the 2016, 2018 and 2022 Music in the Parks, Williamsburg, V.A. Spring Grand Champions.

Mr. Robinson has earned Teacher of the Year honors at both Cary High School and Wakefield Middle School. He has been recognized as both a semi-finalist and a finalist for the Wake County Public Schools Teacher of the Year, Wake County PTA Teacher of the Year and recipient of the NC Central District’s “Award of Excellence”.

Mr. Robinson was the Conductor of the Triangle Youth Symphony, Philharmonic Association, from 1997-2010. He also serves as adjudicator for marching band, concert band and winter-guard competitions in NC, TN, SC and Virginia.

He is a career long member of NCMEA, NC Bandmasters Association, Atlantic Indoor Association and East-Central District Band Directors Association.

Mr. Robinson retired in June of 2023 after a 40-year career music instructor for the North Carolina Public Schools.

Judge Bios Visual General Effect

BOB THOMAS is from Apollo, PA and has taught many champion-

ship high school marching bands, drum and bugle corps, winter guards, and winter winds. He currently judges or has judged for Bands of America (BOA), Drum Corps Internations (DCI), Winter Guard International (WGI), Drum Corps Midwest, Drum Corps Atlantic, Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA), Drum Corps Europe (DCE), Ohio Judges Association, Florida Federation of Judges, Atlantic Indoor Assoication (AIA), Pennsylvania Federation of Judges, and Marching in Okayama, Japan and Drum Corps Associates (DCA).

In 2008 and 2009, Thomas judged the World Marching Band Championships in Malaysia. He also judged from 2009-2011 for the Thailand Drum Line Competition in Bangkok, Thailand. In addition, Thomas has judged for Italian Marching Show Bands Association (IMSB) from 2014-2017. He also judged the Grand Prix Marching Band competition in Jakarta, Indonesia from 2017-2019.

Thomas has been a clinician for Carolina Winter Ensemble Guard Circuit, Seton Hill College Color Guard Camp, West Chester College Color Guard Camp, Penn. Federation of Contest Winter Guard and Band, Ohio Judges Association Winter Guard, Florida Federation of Judges Winter Guard, AIA, South East Color Guard Circuit, Texas Color Guard Circuit, Indiana Indoor Color Guard, DEG Japan Clinician, Drum Corps Europe, Malaysian World Band Competitions, Marching Bands of Indonesia, Borneo Marching Days, European Mega Clinic, and the Irish Marching Bands Association.

He is currently the Chairman of Drum Corps Asia, Director of Education for the AIA indoor color guard association, Co-Chair of the Education Committee for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Marching Band Association (PIMBA), Director of Education for The Virginia Marching Band Cooperative, and was the Director of Education for Drum Corps Europe (DCE) for the past 16 years. Thomas has been to Borneo and Bandug, Indonesia where he taught the DCE Judges College for their DCE license partner Marching Bands of Indonesia. He designed the current scoring system for DCE and Drum Corps Asia, which is currently being used in 12 countries.

Visual Performance

IVAN DE LA CRUZ graduated from New Mexico State University

with a Bachelor's degree in Music Education in 2004. While at NMSU, he studied with Dr. James Shearer, Dr. Alan Kaplan, and Mr. Steve Haddad. He participated in the Pride Marching Band and was part of NMSU Wind Ensemble throughout his time there. Ivan is in his fourth year as Assistant Band Director at The Woodlands High School directing the Symphonic II band and assisting with the visual program of the marching band. He also maintains a private low brass studio in The Woodlands HS cluster. Prior to his work at the Woodlands, Ivan spent six years in El Paso, Texas teaching as an assistant director at Bel Air High School and Ranchland Hill Middle School.

Mr. De La Cruz's performing career includes time as a member of the Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps from 2001-2002 and the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps in 2003. He went on to serve on the Cavaliers visual staff from 2004 to 2010, from there moving to his current appointment with the Santa Clara Vanguard visual staff. While at the Cavaliers, Mr. De La Cruz served as a clinician for both the Music for All/Bands of America Summer Symposium at Illinois State University and the Cavaliers' "Whatever it Takes" camp at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. More recently, Ivan has provided marching band clinics throughout Texas, including sessions in Austin, El Paso, and Sugar Land. In addition to Ivan's work as a teacher and clinician he works as a visual designer for schools in West Texas and Southern New Mexico.

Percussion

COLIN MCNUTT has instructed and arranged for the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps, and the popular stage production, Blast! He has also

written for and instructed the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps, Magic of Orlando, the Madison Scouts, and the Cadets.

Colin served on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he is an alumnus and received degrees in Classics and Music Education. Currently, he is the Percussion Director/arranger for the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps. Colin is a clinician for Yamaha, REMO, Zildjian, and is a Vic Firth Signature Artist.

Color Guard

REIKO CASTEEN is a native of East Tennessee. She graduated from

Daniel Boone High School, East Tennessee State University, and Eastern Virginia Medical School. She has taught several guards (fall and indoor) throughout her career. Her judging experience includes serving as a movement caption judge in the Atlantic Indoor Association since 2004 and has been judging marching band competitions across the Southeastern U.S. for the past 20 years. Her winter guard performing experience includes Daniel Boone High School from 1992-1995, Nuendo Winter Guard from 1996-2000 where they were the WGI Bronze Medalists in 1996, and Infiniti World Winter Guard in 2003. Reiko’s drum corps experience includes marching with Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps from Rockford, Illinois in 1994 (3rd place), 1995 (5th place), and 1996 (DCI Gold Medalist). Reiko currently lives in Richmond, VA with her husband and son.

Drum Major

TREMAYNE B. SMITH hails from Salisbury, North Carolina. He is

a 2011 graduate of East Carolina University with degrees in Music Education and Political Science. He served for three years as the Head Drum Major of the Marching Pirates and was elected President of the Student Body and appointed to the University Board of Trustees. In 2016, he was a recipient of the “ECU 40 Under 40 Distinguished Alumni Award”. He is a member of the ECU Honor College Advancement Council and a member of the ECU Board of Visitors.

He served as Director of Bands at Rocky Mount High School in Rocky Mount, N.C. from 2012-2015. He was named Rocky Mount Teacher of the Year, Wells Fargo Nash-Rocky Mount School System High School District Teacher of the year and received the North Carolina Bandmasters Association Encore Award.

Tremayne has served as a staffer in both chambers of Congress and in 2017 completed his master’s degree in political management from The George Washington University.

Currently, Tremayne serves as Vice President – Operations Manager at JP Morgan Chase, and in 2022 he completed a post-graduate certificate in Social Justice from Harvard University.

Timing and Penalties

ALEX ALBERTI lives in Raleigh and currently serves as the Artistic Director and conductor of the Triangle Pride Band, a local community symphonic and marching program. He formerly taught at Longleaf School of the Arts in Raleigh as the Director of Instrumental Music. At LSA, he taught Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, AP Music Theory, AP Psychology, Music History, and a contemporary a cappella ensemble and oversaw the school's Indoor Marching Ensemble program. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University in Music Education with a minor in Psychology and received his Master's degree in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Alberti is an active researcher in the field of music education, contemporary vocal music, and music theory pedagogy, presenting his findings nationally at conferences such as NAfME, the College Music Society, and NCUR. In his spare time, Alberti composes both choral and instrumental works, judges for the International Competition for Collegiate A Cappella and A Cappella Education Association, and participates in the semi-professional a cappella group, Triadic.

How the Bands are Judged 1. All participants and all program styles start with an equal opportunity to succeed. Scores are assigned based on criteria required in each sub-caption.

No judging penalties will exist because of the unit’s marching style.

2. Chief Judge–Oversees the five main judges, oversees the timing & penalty issues, and resolves conflicts.

3. Five Judges assign scores as follows: The caption weighting will be as follows…

• Music Performance Ensemble - 25% • Music Performance Individual - 15% • Music Effect - 20% • Visual Effect - 20% • Visual Performance - 20% 4. In addition to these five judges, there will be one Percussion Judge, one Color Guard Judge, and one Drum Major/s Judge. Scores from the Percussion, Color Guard, and Drum Major/s judges will not be used in determining the raw or final score.

5. There will be a Timing Official who will enforce all timing, procedure, and restriction violations. This official will also document the number of performers [horns and percussion] and verifies the number of performers for each class.

6. There will also be a Gate Official responsible for coordinating the entrance of all bands.

7. The “GRAND CHAMPION” Trophy will be awarded for the highest score, regardless of class. (One to be awarded in Class 1A-2A-3A; and one to be awarded in Class 4A-5A-6A).
