When Collin Iedema set his sights on a career as a teacher and musician in seventh grade, he took an analytical approach to determine the traits he wanted to embody as a future educator.
“I started to study my teachers and their classes,” said Collin. “I’d ask myself, ‘What is it that I like about this teacher?’”
Collin grew up surrounded by music. His mother is a saxophone player and a member of the CBC Jazz Band in the ‘80s. But with a scientist father, Collin also considered becoming a physicist or chemist.
Today, Collin has been working as a substitute teacher throughout the state and teaches saxophone lessons. He says his years at CBC before transferring to Whitworth profoundly impacted him.
“I had so many faculty members who made a difference,” he said. “Professor Collin Wilson taught me a lot. I became a better musician, and I think studying with him was a turning point for me.”
CBC alum Deven Austin knew theatre was his calling after taking the first class with CBC Senior Associate Professor of Theatre Ronn Campbell.
“Ronn was invested in every student and had a deep knowledge and passion for the arts he wanted to share with others,” said Deven.
Deven’s love for theatre grew during his years at CBC in the classroom, on the stage and at theatre festivals.
Those experiences helped prepare him for his next step at Central Washington University and his current role as the Drama Teacher at Pasco High School.
In his second year of teaching, Deven now sees the importance of the arts more than ever.
“As actors or directors, we can help people come to terms with their emotions or feelings at the moment,” he said. “That is a powerful aspect of theatre and how it helps make the world a better place.”
Mia Stone’s dream is to ignite a passion for music in students who may not have had that opportunity.
“There are no prerequisites to enjoying music. You’re allowed to just like it, and that appeals to me,” she said.
Mia attended CBC before transferring to Whitworth. She plans to finish her Music Education degree in 2024.
“I didn’t do well in high school, but I told myself, ‘I’m going to go to college,’” said Mia. “CBC was a priceless experience for me.”
Her classes with CBC Associate Music Professors Collin Wilson and Bruce Walker made a lasting difference that she still thinks about today.
“They never wavered in their support, and they were consistent in helping me grow, so I could be successful beyond CBC,” she said.
