National Family Week is celebrated each year but we can celebrate our family any time. Some possible ways are as follows: - Have a special family meal with candles, favourite dishes, and silver service. Invite another family to join you. Have a family story telling evening when each one tells a favourite family story. Parents may tell how they met and the good times they had. Have a night where everyone swaps ‘roles’ - children cook dinner, parents get tucked into bed and read a story. Arrange with the boss to bring your child(ren) to work to find out about what you do. Organise a family outing - to the shops, cinema, picnic, or to visit a friend or relative in a nursing home or hospital. Do something for a family less fortunate than your own. Plant a tree for each member of the family in your garden. Take a family photo and do so on the same day each year. Arrange a family concert. Make a list of family issues, which are of concern to you. Organise a panel to discuss these. Go to Mass as a family and/or pray together for each other. Br Michael Flaherty

Years 7-10 Drama Production, 2014 intake starts now! This year, the CBC Drama Club is continuing for Years 7-10 students. The exciting news is that the Club may be chosen by your son instead of a winter sport. Workshops will be held Wednesday afternoons in Terms 2 and 3 from 3:30pm until 5pm with the end result being a small production on Thursday 11 September. Family and friends will have the opportunity to see your son tread the boards after having spent some quality time refining his verbal communication skills, confidence and social skills! Drama Club was a huge success in 2013 and we can’t wait to get it under way in 2014. Permission forms can be collected from myself or please email me at senglish@cbc.sa.edu.au. I look forward to producing something inspiring with the students! Ms Sarah English

BADMINTON Open C Badminton 15 March 2014

CBC 10 defeated Immanuel College 2 The team played another inspiring morning of badminton to continue their season’s winning streak. There were some excellent scores: Ray Liao and Alex Gawronski won their doubles 21/0, 21/3 (Ray and Alex also won their singles); John Neindorf won a 3-setter singles; Marek Wojcik won 21/3, 21/6; Jacob Sunter played 2 singles matches and won both. Other players on the day were Chris Mathew and Phillip Kim who won their doubles. Well played, everyone! Mrs Anna Memma Coach

Best players include Akok Machar, Jack Scott, Chhany Pich and Brendon Ly. Good defence by Callum Marshall. 18 March 2014 CBC Year 7 Gold were defeated by CBC Year 7 Red 24 – 23! A very close challenge! A fantastic effort by all including the opposition. Many thanks to the parents who helped out with scoring. Ms Kay Oliphant Coach

CRICKET Year 9A Cricket Saturday 15 March

Blackfriars (4/86) defeated CBC (8/74) Best Bowling: Robey 1/10 (3 overs) Rajagopal 1/8 (1 over) Sullivan-Smith 1/10 (1 over) Best Batting: Rajagopal 14 (retired) Matthias 13 Barker 9 It was a mixed result for the Year 9A team, with some exciting performances but an overall disappointing loss. Some overnight rain resulted in a damp pitch and unfortunately we lost the toss and were put into bat. To the credit of Blackfriars, their bowling was tight and they made our batsmen work hard for every run. Sid and Harrison were looking solid and scoring at a good rate until Harrison was out LBW to a ball that was straight and stayed low. Ridgwell was promoted to first drop and looked settled when he was bowled for 7. Matthias and Sid then formed a solid partnership which stablised the team. Runs were hard to get though, and with a wet outfield boundaries even harder to come by. Captain Sid was retired to give some other boys a go, and Barker came in with intent, smashing a four off one of his first balls. Matthias was about to get in on the action too, but he was bowled by ‘the best ball he has ever faced’, paying credit to some excellent bowling and challenging batting conditions. On reflection, I think the team’s feeling was that we needed to be more aggressive from the start, and perhaps we slipped too easily back into 2-day game mode. However, what I really liked about the boys’ approach was the value that everyone put on their own wicket, seizing the

opportunity for time out in the middle. Roby opened the bowling with a blistering spell that deserved more than just one wicket. He was very close on a few LBW shouts and his pace and accuracy was one of the highlights for the day. Our fielding was good and not many balls got through, apart from a couple of really tough catches that were put down. Matthias kept well and was rewarded with a sharp stumping off Sid, removing their top scorer. Despite the impending loss, it was good to see the boys stay up-beat in the field and complete the match in a positive spirit. Well done to Liam McMurray who played in his debut game for CBC, as well Alex S-S and Sriram who played their first game for the season. It was great that Liam Hopper came and supported the team, highlighting the positive and strong bonds that the team has formed. Thanks to the fantastic support provided by the parents, not only for assisting with scoring and umpiring, but also bringing some snacks for morning tea! Mr George Bryant Coach

Year 8A Cricket CBC (5/97) defeated Blackfriars PS 49 CBC won by 6 wickets It is 6.30am. The heavens are riven in turmoil. Kaleidoscopic flashes of lightning stream through my window; sonorous claps of thunder shatter the silence of the morning. The telephone rings. It is Mr Buttfield: “Don’t let my boys be electrocuted, Lingard”. I assure him that each one is far too precious, and that none will frizzle. I drive to Collins Reserve, wondering whether the Adelaide weather god, who has already decimated our season, is scheming to scupper CBC once again - but the deity is only toying with us, and the sun emerges to reveal a glorious morning for this one-day game. Winning the toss, Zane Caldwell elected to bowl first; in a short game it is useful to know one’s target. Tyler Capelutti and Frederick Oliver each captured a wicket in his second over, Capelutti through sheer pace and Oliver with a guileful slower ball. In 3 overs, Capelutti took 1 for 6 (that included a boundary ‘no ball’) and Oliver 1 for only 3. Each bowled well, although Oliver who is endearingly self-critical confessed that he drifted a couple down the leg-side. We did not secure another wicket until the score had reached 40, after 16 overs, when an avalanche erupted under Blackfriars and only one further batsman scored a run. Austin Lovell (good, though he struggled a little against a left-hander), Josh Young (cunning, but a trifle short once or twice), Oliver Alyanak (flighted the ball teasingly) and Thomas Altomare (quicker than he looks) all bowled steadily, the latter capturing a wicket. Lachlan Denholm, the 9th bowler to be used, claimed 2 victims, one by luring Blackfriars’ most technical batsman lbw, and the other due to a catch by Jamie Cerone who held a tricky high ball while staring directly into the sun. Hayden Clarke’s 2 overs of legbreaks were especially mesmerising; he bowled a critical length and spun the ball appreciably; he was about to be reintroduced into the attack when his captain gobbled up the rest of the opposition, consuming 4 of them for 2 runs in 3.4 overs. One of his wickets was due to a superb return catch. Our ground fielding was smarter today, apart from a couple of overthrows. Mariuz kept wicket tidily. Blackfriars expired for 49 in 21.4 overs. In reply, CBC’s first three batsmen fell for 15 runs! Caldwell (1) stroked every ball elegantly to a fieldsman until he was trapped lbw in the 3rd over. Jack Bastian (4) and Will Mariuz (5) each played a few shots that were independent of the ball; then Bastion was bowled and Mariuz was lbw. Oh dear, were we about to suffer a phantasmagorical collapse? Capelutti (10) smote a couple of fierce boundaries, but he too was lbw, playing across the line, before victory was achieved in the 19th over. Altomare (18*), Denholm (7*) and Lovell (11*) stopped the rot, each retiring, and we lost only one further wicket, finishing our allotment of 27 overs on 5/97. Altomare’s top-score followed his 21 in the last match. Denholm looked technically very secure. Clarke (4*) smacked a boundary before the end.

Hands were shaken, the niceties observed, another victory achieved. Thank you, Mr Lovell, for masterminding the scorebook this week. Sadly, that completes Year 8’s cricket program for Term 1, although a combined Year 8/9 game will be played on Friday 28 March. Despite their meagre diet of cricket, the boys are developing into a coherent and promising school side. I look forward to reunite with them in Term 4. In the interim, let us feast upon the words of ‘Rumi’ (Jalal ad-Din ar-Rumi, 13th century Persian mystic): It’s good to leave each day behind, Like flowing water, free from sadness. Yesterday is gone and its tale told. Today new seeds are growing. Mr Lingard Goulding Coach

Year 8B Cricket CBC 7/151 defeated Concordia College 8/112 Playing on the bouncy hard wicket at Adelaide High, our opening batsmen were able to get us off to an excellent start with strong running between the wickets – putting pressure on the fieldsmen. Jake Carbone, playing his first match in the Bs due to injury, will be knocking on the door for reselection in the A team. He saw off the opening bowlers and retired on 17 before returning late in the innings to plunder the bowlers to all parts and finish with 54 not out. Jake was well supported by Micheal Kittel-Neill who made a solid 26*. Highlights of the middle order were John Kleeman’s 12 not out and Lachlan Geisler continuing his recent form with 17. Josh Tammita supported Jake towards the end of the innings, hitting two boundaries. 151 was an above par score, but we still needed to bowl well as the hard wicket was conducive to scoring runs. Rhyley Williams put Concordia on the back foot early, clean bowling both of their openers. He returned to the attack late in the innings to take a third wicket, also bowled, to finish with 3/23 from 5 overs. Adrian Cochrane (3/24 from 3) was the other chief wicket taker, dismissing their dangerous number three batsmen and two wickets at the end of the innings – once again all clean bowled. Other wickets were taken by Mitchell Vonthoff and John Kleeman who both bowled a tight line, making runs difficult to score, leading to some of Rhyley and Adrian’s wickets with batsmen choosing the wrong ball to have a swing at in an attempt to break the shackles. Some great improvements have been made by the side since their first match and all are now playing much more like a team. The main area to continue working on is minimising the number of wides we bowl, which are free runs to our opposition. I acknowledge Tony Vonthoff for his invaluable contribution in taking the team in my absence. Mr Thomas McLean Coach

SWIMMING Senior Swimming The last two swim meets for CBC have seen a large improvement with many swimmers achieving personal best times. The swimmers are working very well as a team, supporting each other and ensuring all swim events are filled. I would like to acknowledge those who, week after week, swim above their age group to ensure the success of the team, often with outstanding results. The last two events have been held at Westminster College and St Peter’s College respectively. At both meets CBC swimmers have done the college proud, preforming well in the pool. Thank you also to the Swimming Captain, Tyson Sarunic, who each week organises the swimmers into their swimming events, ensuring each swimmer has his share of swims. Some outstanding swims over the past few weeks include the relay team of Edward Jackson, Cooper Lienert, Calum Adcock and Taylor Sarunic, who swam three relays back to back, winning all three. Along with Laurence Giannetta and

Tyson Sarunic this combination of swimmers has had a lot of success representing CBC in the pool. Apologies to Thomas Costanzo and Nicholas Tammita for the omission of their names from the swimmers named in the first article; they are both valuable member of our team. Mrs Jenny Palmer Swimming Coordinator

School Teams Swimming Championships Congratulations to Edward Jackson, Kian Bird, Zac Vilis and Simon Gagliardi who represented CBC in the Year 7/8 team at the School Teams Swimming Championships held at the SA Aquatic Centre, Marion on Thursday 20 Feb. The swim meet consisted of 50-metre relay events based on year levels and whilst there was a serious side to the meet, being able to swim relays gave the boys a great opportunity to work together in teams. The boys came 4th and 5th in their events, which is an outstanding effort considering the quality of swimmers on the night. This is the first year CBC has entered this event, which is held annually, and we look forward to competing in many more of these events. We competed against Immanuel, Westminster, Trinity, St Peter’s, Pembroke, PAC and St Ignatius College. Well done, boys -- you are a credit to CBC. Mrs Jenny Palmer Swimming Coordinator

The boys departed elated with their hard fought success. Well done again on a fantastic team effort! CBC: Brandon Tran, Bailey Yeadon, Steven Yin, Brian Ma, Aidan Smith, Denzell Arevalo, John Phan, Jackson Chau and Mark Vong. Mrs Debra Withers Coach

Mercedes 2 defeated CBC 0 Best Players: Tomas Greenshields, Joshua Silbor Most improved: Jacob Opperman The boys can be justly proud of their performance which was undoubtedly their best against a formidable opposition. It was a close series of games with the second set going to Mercedes 32-30. Time allowed for a third game where Mercedes proved to be the better team on the day. Well done, boys. Your most improved performance overall. You can be proud of your efforts and the manner in which you conducted yourselves. Ms Jane Gaynor Coach

Tennis Senior C Tennis 15 March 2014

CBC 8 sets (63 games) defeated Pembroke 4 sets (42 games) CBC posted its second impressive win for the season and to date remains undefeated. Matthew Italiano/Luke Zounis (6-0); Christian Tarzia/Adrian Niscioli (6-1) and Thomas Signore/ Matthew Dell’Orso (6-0) dominated their doubles matches and again provided the team with a psychological advantage before the commencement of the singles. David Haydon-Potts (6-4) and Matthew Italiano (7-5) both played enthralling matches, whilst Luke Teakle (6-4), Aiden Smith (6-2) and Thomas Signore (6-2) easily accounted for their opponents. Brandon Shunmugam (4-6) succumbed in the final stages of his encounter against Pembroke’s number 1 seeded player and Christian Tarzia (2-6) was valiant in defeat. Overall, it was indeed, a very satisfying victory! Well done, lads! Mr George Caretti Coach

A home game for this week and we were all looking forward to putting some of the skills we learnt from Mr Curnow, into practice. We began strongly with some excellent serving from Robert Than. We put in a good showing for the first set, but were overrun at the end. The second set was a bit of a whitewash. We lost our concentration and started to get frustrated with each other. We lost that set by a substantial amount. The final set was close again. We had fun in this set as we had already lost the match. Every week that we play as a team sees us developing our skills, having more confidence and enjoying our volleyball; however, stamina and concentration for the entire match is imperative if we want to succeed. VOLLEYBALL Open C Volleyball CBC 2 defeated St Peter’s 1 Wow! What a game! Drama and excitement galore! The Open ‘C’ team once again rallied to win a fantastic match, despite losing the first set narrowly to St Peter’s 25 to 22. In the second set, thanks to some great serving from Steven Yin and Brian Ma, the boys quickly established a firm lead and went on to win the set convincingly 25 points to 15. It was all to play for in the final and deciding set. Once again CBC managed to gain a firm lead in the initial stage of the set. However, St Peter’s did not give up without a fight and the teams were soon deadlocked at 25 points each. The momentum swung CBC’s way again and the team secured 3 match points, to finally claim the victory 28 points to St Peter’s 26.
