Br Michael’s Corner Forgiveness and Inner Peace Fr James Valladares blesses the “Spirit of our Brothers” quad scull.

at CBC has there been such a formulated program designed to ensure the very best results of each and every individual rower. We must also acknowledge the dedicated work of a small group of parents who form the Water Sports Auxiliary. The determination shown by these individuals to ensure the ongoing success of rowing at the school can be highlighted by their hard work, dedication and fundraising activities at weekly regattas from pizzas to coffee and drinks to cakes and gelato at every regatta. Welcome dignitaries, guests, teachers and fellow students. My name is Joseph De Donatis and I am the 2013-2014 College Rowing Captain. Rowing was introduced to the college in 1909 by the then brother -- it was the same year as Adelaide’s first electric tram line opening. Since 1909 the college has enjoyed enormous successes and has been widely acknowledged for its on-water prowess. Recently, success on the water has been hard to come by, and the ongoing future of rowing at the college has also come under question. Our community can be grateful for the commitment to rowing shown by the school Board, the principal Mr Noel Mifsud, and from our deputy Mr Shaun Clarke. Their commitment to ensure that the CBC heritage in rowing continues has been unwavering. We must also acknowledge the commitment of the student rowers, coaches and the Water Sports Auxiliary, success on the a water would be unattainable without the unified commitment of these groups. I am also of the strong belief that the effort that has been shown by the Director of Water Sports and Head Coach Mr Jarrad Schar will yield positive results in the years to come; I am only sad that I will not be here to witness those future successes. Never in my time in rowing

Recognition of the work of the auxiliary is one of the reasons we are here today -- their tireless endeavour has allowed for the purchase of a new Sykes quad scull boat to be aptly named the “Spirit of Our Brothers”. We welcome Father Valladares who will bless our boat shortly.

Inner peace can be reached only when we practice forgiveness. Forgiveness is letting go of the past and is a means for correcting our mis-perceptions. Forgiveness comes through letting go of whatever we think other people have done to us or whatever we have done to them. Through true forgiveness we can stop the endless recycling of guilt and going over past hurts. Forgiveness releases thoughts that seem to separate us from others and we can accept our own healing and extend healing love to those around us. Healing comes with unity. If we want inner peace then forgiveness is essential. We are released from inner guilt and turmoil as we forgive others and join with them in unity and love. Peace of mind occurs when we extend forgiveness to others and have no desire to get anything from them or to change them in any way. Forgiveness and inner peace of mind go hand in hand. Br Michael Flaherty

I would like to take this opportunity to invite students to come and try rowing. It’s not easy especially those early morning Winter starts but the friendship and mateship you will enjoy will be remembered for years to come... remember the ongoing success of rowing at the college starts with the students. On a final note, the Head of The River Regatta (The Grand Final of Rowing if you will) is due to be held on Saturday 15th March 2014 at the West Lakes. The event is the culmination of the 2013/2014 Rowing Season and attracts up to 15,000 participants and supporters. I would like to formally invite one and all to this event to show the CBC communities’ united support of rowing.

Feel all the excitement of Clipsal 500 27 February – 2 March 2014

Rowers… can do it all, and they can do it well. Joining the rowing team will be the greatest decision you will ever make if you choose to accept the harsh realities of the sport. By doing so, you will understand the incalculable value of an indomitable spirit, and you will learn, above all, that your achievements in life are limited only by the magnitude of your drive to achieve them. Joseph De Donatis 2013-14 Rowing Captain

BADMINTON Open C Badminton 15 February 2014

CBC 14 sets defeated Pembroke 13 sets CBC started the morning by winning three of the four doubles matches. Marek Wojcik, John Neindorf and James Rojas continued their strong form to win their singles matches as well. Once all games had been played the score was a draw so sets were counted. The set score indicated a CBC win by one set. Congratulations to all who played this week. Other players were: Michael Tran, Christian D’Addario, Brian Ma, Chris Mathew and Jacob Sunter. Well played team! Ms Anna Memma Coach

CBC 3 defeated St Ignatius A2 0 What a start to the season!? After warming up for over 45 minutes I was worried that our team may have used up all of their energy before we’d even started but they proved me wrong – very wrong. Despite the humid conditions in the CBC gym, the boys were cool, calm and collected. Serving accurately, spiking at the net and providing ongoing support for their teammates. Their communication was outstanding and this, along with great skill, saw the team convincingly win three straight sets – 25-12, 25-10 and 25-15. Congratulations to Stefan Ryschka, Nathan Koulizos, Travis O’Keefe, Charles Pickford, Daniel Bigolin, Daniel Storti, Jake Pinksterboer, Nick Di Troia and Dominic Sangermano, on an exceptional first round match. Adelaide High 2 defeated CBC 0

CBC 3 St Ignatius 0 The CBC Year 10 team saw the return of the group that had played together during Year 8 and Year 9. As a result, the play during the game was seamless, with each player supporting and working fantastically well together as a team. St Ignatius struggled to cope with this effective approach and quickly lost the first set 25 to 15. The second set followed the same pattern with CBC winning easily 25 to 14. Sportingly, the boys agreed to continue with a third set. Unfortunately for St Ignatius the third set was not a consolation prize and CBC once again won decisively, 25 points to 11. A great start! CBC players: Aidan Smith, Denzell Arevelo, Brandon Tran, Steven Yin, Brian Ma, Mark Vong, Jackson Chau, John Phan, Phil Kim. Mrs Debra Withers Coach

This was the first match of the season which was played at Adelaide High. The team comprised of Joshua Silbor (Cpt), Ramon O’Donnell, Jack Sperring, Jacob Opperman, Joshua Silbor, Thai Nguyen and Lachlan Geisler. The team put in a great effort against a formidable opposition. The boys can be congratulated on their spirit and good sportsmanship throughout the game. Time allowed for a further set to be played (3) where once again Adelaide High proved to be unbeatable. Best players were Joshua Silbor and Jack Sperring. Well done boys. Mrs Jane Gaynor Coach

St Peters 3 defeated CBC 0

Friday 14th February

Our first game of the season was one we might just wish to forget. We only had 5 players due to an unforeseen absence. The St Peters team was made up of predominantly Year 9s whereas ours was mainly Year 8s. We did, however, make the most of the game. It is a new team and therefore we lacked match practise together. We were very competitive in the first set only losing by 3 points. However, we lost our momentum and our drive in the warm conditions and it became somewhat a whitewash for the rest of the game. The boys were very disappointed but they did the best they could on limited match practise and only 5 players. We must ensure that we talk to each other on the court and are decisive in what we do. We served excellently but did not follow it up with team play. Hopefully, with more practise and team building we will become solid in our work ethic. Looking forward to this week’s game! Ms Emma Woehle Coach

PAC 9 defeated CBC 8 Goal Scorers: Bennett Reisinger 2, Taylor Sarunic 1, Laurence Giannetta 1, Henry Barker 1, PAC fill-ins 3 Our boys made an excellent start to the season and displayed brilliant skills in our first game. We were struggling for numbers this week and as a result PAC were gracious in allowing us a player each quarter to fill in. The PAC players linked well with our guys and enjoyed playing for the Purple and White better than their own team! We had juniors Laurence and Henry filling in and they played very well. Andrew Nguyen was very strong as our goal keeper and Taylor was the lynch pin to all of our attacks. Bennett Reisinger was a stand out in his first game and his long arms and strong swimming was a great asset. He is now hooked on the Water Polo bug. A great team effort. Congratulations to Tyson Sarunic who is the Swimming Captain and Andrew Nguyen who is the Water Polo Captain for 2014. Both young men will lead us well and have been consistent performers for CBC in past years. Mr Rick Mackereth Coach
