Welcome to Christian Brothers College 2014 On Tuesday we welcomed 233 new students across the Junior and Senior Campuses as well as a number of new families into our Community Children’s Centre. It was a privilege to walk around the College, visit students and teachers in classrooms and share stories with our new parents on the first day of school.
On Wednesday morning Monsignor Aitken celebrated a community 8am Mass with staff, students and members of the Christian Brothers College Community in attendance. Celebrating the Eucharist graced us with the opportunity to place in God’s hands our hopes, dreams and prayers for the year ahead. This year our College theme is “Gathered as Many: Standing as One”. Our College website provides the following exploration of the theme: The theme was developed by our 2014 SRC Leadership Team and challenges us to be a College community irrespective of our background, ethnicity and belief that stands united in solidarity against injustice in our world and reaches out to those on the margins.

In a letter to CBC staff this week Edmund Rice Education Australia Executive Director Dr Wayne Tinsey writes: Catholic schools must always resist the challenge of elitism; the temptation to accommodate the poor rather than give them an equal place at the table. This may require us to be counter-cultural and out of step with society’s norms – the way things are traditionally done. However, as Chesterton once said, ‘The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried!’
The 2014 College theme again speaks to us not about elitism but about how the CBC community in all its diversity calls us to be people of one heart for each other.

Br Michael’s Corner Check it out! Check it out! A high school principal said to a gathering of parents, “I promise not to believe all the things your children say about your home, if you promise not to believe all the things your children say about our school.” Children have active imaginations and they fill in blanks with fantasy when they have only part of the story. For that matter don’t we all do the same at times? Children can distort and exaggerate facts and will take advantage of opportunities to manipulate adults. “Everyone at school has a driving licence.” “No one in my class has to be home before midnight.” To get you to approve a particular behaviour or action, children will attempt to convince you that the other parents allow it, when that may not be the case. This applies especially to discipline issues, TV, going to parties, what children are allowed to eat, what their bedtime is and with whom they are allowed to associate. Parents and teachers need to check it out. When parents are separated this is essential. Checking things out lets children know that they cannot make statements and assume you will not verify them with each other or teachers. Checking it out reduces manipulation, lying and anger between parents and with teachers. Checking it out opens communication with other parents or teachers. In 2014 the College is trialling, effective immediately fortnightly Newsletters along with an update edition (to include sports results and key date claimers) in the off weeks when there is no Insight publication. I am deeply indebted to the highly professional work of Mr Alex Ly who publishes the newsletter weekly. This new fortnightly publication will allow Alex time to explore new avenues of College communication including Facebook and Twitter sites. From The Deputy Principal Gathered as Many, Standing as One I would like to welcome all students and parents to our 2014 academic year and particularly the new families who have joined our community. This year our college theme is “Gathered as Many: Standing as One”. This theme was developed by our 2014 SRC Leadership Team and challenges us all to be a College community so that, irrespective of our backgrounds, ethnicity and belief stands united in solidarity against injustice in our world and reaches out to those on the margins. The image of our 2014 theme depicts the diversity of our world through our different cultures and the presence of the Holy Spirit among us. Each person in the image is wearing a different colour that depicts our six Houses. The dove symbol is itself aflame with the Spirit descending on all people bringing hope. Hope is important for both our spiritual and emotional wellbeing. St Paul in his letter to the Corinthians states that there are “three things that last: faith, hope, and love.” These are identified as unique gifts from God that serve as the structuring elements of a properly spiritual life. In our secular world today these elements can often be misunderstood and may not been seen as important in our religious life. Faith is one our foundational values in the college and calls us to have courage in ourselves and others, to leap beyond reason to put our trust in a compassionate God who provides support in the good and bad times and promises us everlasting life. It is this promise that provides for all Christians the virtue of hope. Through hope we can overcome the suffering, tragedy, conflict and injustice of our world and have optimism in a God who cares for the world that he created, a world that has a future and endless possibilities. The final virtue of love can often be trivialised. For many in our community it may be
seen as a “nice guy” or “being a gentleman”. However, love is not about being friendly and getting along; true love is about what is best for another person and then concretely doing something about it. This love calls us to be people of action and to be an advocate of justice and standing up for those who do not have a voice. This is the challenge for our students and whole College community in 2014. For our students school life can be challenging. There are many obstacles they will face and having goals is not enough. One has to keep getting closer to those goals, amidst all the inevitable twists and turns of life. Hope allows them to approach problems with a mindset and strategy-set suitable for success, thereby increasing the chances they will actually accomplish their goals. Hope is not just a feel-good emotion, but a dynamic cognitive motivational system. Under this conceptualisation of hope, emotions follow cognitions, not the other way round. Hope leads to learning goals, which are conducive to growth and improvement. Students with learning goals are actively engaged in their learning, constantly planning strategies to meet their goals, and monitoring their progress to stay on track. This aligned with growth in their own spirituality and hope of eternal life allows students to have a strong self-image and confidence that through all the challenges of life they have been given gifts from God to be successful. The scripture from Ephesians (4:4) which accompanies our theme this year reminds our College community that Christ is the centre of our life. Our church is one mystical body, inspired by the Gospel and animated by the one Spirit, the Holy Spirit who gives us gifts and grace to be in union with Christ and people of hope. It is this hope that calls us to eternal life and to be people of one heart for each other. “Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out”. Welcome A warm welcome to all staff and students from the library team! We look forward to working with you all this year. The Senior Campus library staff includes Mrs Sandra Mason, Mrs Angela Barry, and Mrs Margaret Pilichiewicz, with Mr Oliver Harms as Junior Campus Teacher Librarian. The library resources consist of a library website that can be accessed from the College portal system, along with information books to support the curriculum, an extensive fiction collection, newspapers, and a large selection of journals for recreation and research. It has been a busy start to the school year with the distribution of text books to senior students and laptop computers. All senior school students now have the use of a personal laptop computer, which should contribute strongly to learning outcomes.
Just a reminder that all students need to return their textbooks at the end of the school year, so please ensure that the resources are cared for accordingly during this time. Students are welcome to visit the senior library during opening hours, 8:00 am till 4:00 pm each day, and during lunch breaks. Students are able to borrow a total of eight books at a time for two weeks, which can be extended if required for another two weeks. The library staff members are happy to assist students with book selection, research support and library skills. Best wishes to all students for their studies this year! Director Junior Campus, Vision and Innovation Dear Parent and Caregivers, Thanks you for the positive way in which you have embraced the commencement of the 2014 school year, instilling in your children a strong sense of community, connectedness and belonging, as you embraced each other, introduced yourselves and welcomed new families and children to our community. Of equal importance was the supportive way in which you modelled for your children a valuing of education and a love and joy of learning. Current research related to the importance of parental involvement in a child’s education consistently refers to the fact that there are two main educators within the early years of a child’s life – their parents and their teachers, with parents being the prime educators until a child attends an early years setting or starts school. What is significant in this research is the connection between parental involvement, a valuing of education and improved student learning outcomes throughout a child’s education and beyond. Clearly this research reinforces the critical importance of developing and maintaining positive and respectful working relationships within the context of an educational community. It is my belief that when these critical relationships are nurtured through the spiritual formation of a community, they become transformative, shifting individuals and the community as a whole from the ordinary to the extra-ordinary through a unity of the heart. Zohar and Marshall (2000) describe our spiritual intelligence as: ‘The ultimate intelligence, which enhances all other intelligences. It is transformative guiding our thinking, learning and decision making, from lower motivation to one of higher motivation focused on love, courage and compassion. Cultivating within community a confidence to take risks and collectively challenge each other to strive for excellence in all that we are and all that we do.
The 2014 College theme calls us as community to acknowledge value and respect our diversity and through a unity of our spirit become one. “Gathered as many, Standing as One” Brother Phillip Pinto (Congregational Leader of the Christian Brothers) stated that ‘the difference between a stranger and a friend is in the story.’ Let us not be strangers to each other, but recognise each other as partners in an educational journey energised and motivated through the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice. An educational journey rich in tradition, a journey that began one hundred and thirty-six years ago and has touched and influenced the lives of over 18,500 boys challenging them to be young men of Faith, Excellence, Community and Compassion and to go out into the world and advocate for justice, peace and a better world for all. A spirit so eloquently captured through the words of one of our old collegians Erick Niyiragira, when he shared his life journey at our 2013 Birthday Celebration Mass.
R – 12 Counsellor Welcome to 2014 One of the hallmarks of our CBC community is the nurturing and care we provide for the whole person. The CBC Counselling Team comprises Fiona Dunstan (Jnr Campus), Liz Tidemann, Ian Hamilton, Assistant Principal - Wellbeing, and myself, Jane Gaynor. Our Counselling team provides a confidential counselling service for students, parents and staff while observing the mandatory notification principles.
“We can all learn a lot from the Spirit of Edmund Rice. We have the choice each day to count others as significant as us and to treat them with love and respect as this is what gives them the confidence to learn, grow and dream. We also need to have the courage to allow others to love and support us and be open to learning from each other. Our lives are very important, too important to keep to ourselves. Let us live a shared life. “
The provision of our counselling service plays an important role in supporting the personal, emotional, social and intellectual development of each student complementing our school’s Pastoral Care Program from Reception to Year 12. It involves communicating relevant information and issues to the Principal, Deputy, Heads of House and teaching staff when necessary. The role of the counselling team is considered to be an essential component of the student support network.
In closing I am excited to welcome to our college our thirty-eight new Reception students and their families, who on Tuesday in the scorching heat commenced their educational journey. Joining them on this first day were our new teaching staff: Ms Ciara Costello (Reception Purple), Ms Angela Giglio (Year 1Purple), Mrs Melanie O’Leary (Year 5/6 Gold), Mr Jace Bode (Specialist Physical Education), Mrs Cindy Buckley (Specialist – Music) and Mr Oliver Harms (Teacher Librarian). We also welcome back in 2014 Ms Gabrielle Cronin who this year will teach Year 3 Purple. We are blessed by your presence within community and we look forward with anticipation to sharing your story, and growing as a community through the respective gifts and talents you bring to your chosen profession.
Our service provides support, advocacy and a range of interventions appropriate to each individual circumstance. As counsellors at CBC we are also involved in the planning and implementation of early intervention programs, preventative programs as deemed appropriate and community education. Within our role as school counsellors, we contribute to the review of student and staff welfare policies.

The Counselling team also provides advice on appropriate referral options to other professional support agencies for students when necessary. We actively liaise with parents, staff and these professional agencies to support student wellbeing. Students can be self-referred, teacher-referred, or parent-referred and can access our service on an individual or group basis. Mediation services are provided as required to further support our student, staff and parent wellbeing. DENTAL CARE FOR YOUR CHILDREN It is important for children to have strong, healthy teeth and gums. All children (0 – 17 years) are welcome to attend School Dental Service clinics. Dental treatment is free at School Dental Service clinics if: • Family Tax Benefit Part A is paid for your child, or • Your child is covered by a School Card, Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card. The School Dental Service will bulk-bill under the new Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule that starts in 2014. Under this scheme, most children aged between 2-17 years will be eligible to claim up to $1000 of Dental services over 2 years.
