The Glass House is one of the most iconic works of American modernist architecture. Built by Philip Johnson to be his own home, it was the first of fourteen structures on his 47-acre estate. The house was completed in 1949 in New Canaan, Connecticut. The house is a rectangular, one-story pavilion measuring around 56 by 32 feet, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls supported by black steel piers. Inside, the space is open and fluid, with only a central brick cylinder enclosing the bathroom and fireplace. Its intent was to explore transparency, proportion, and the integration of architecture with landscape, making the surrounding environment the true “walls” of the house.
