DIRECTOR’S LETTER
In the late 1960's, it is reported that a young Stephen Schwartz began writing an original musical for a club while in college. This project was heavily influenced by Schwartz’s own world views and life experiences. The longer he worked on it, the more it changed and, eventually it became known as Pippin The show you are about to see is not the culmination of Schwartz’s writing. In fact, Schwartz is very candid that Pippin has changed many times over the years and he enjoys some versions more than others. Of course, we don’t know what Schwartz would think of our version, but we do know what it means to us. The framework of Pippin centers around the universal coming of age story. The main character desires to succeed and is given several paths to choose from. Ultimately, they choose a path and are faced with consequences, both good and bad, until they choose another. From the outset, the universality of this story was paramount. We did not want this show to be seen as “ a show about a king” or “ a show about a circus.” In fact, many of struggled with the idea that the show wasn’t about the characters at all. This show is, in fact, a show about YOU. It’s a show about all of us. When you strip away the glitz and glam of a theatrical production, a truly good piece of theatrical writing is about every audience member. In this story, you are Pippin. This story is about the major issues you’ve faced or will face Early in your life you aspired to be someone until you found their flaws. You saught pleasure in one way or another. You sought fulfillment in your quest and, hopefully, ultimately, you found something that makes you truly happy. In fact, if you are like most of us, you probably rejected it at first, but you went back it once you realized it’s value We invite you into our world of Pippin. The world of a dream. The dreams you have every night where those that you dream about are not who they are. They stand for something, for someone. We invite you to consider who or what is your Charles, who/what is your Berthe and who/what is your Catherine. We, the players of YOUR story, are here to guide you to the realizations that make life worth living and, hopefully entertain you along the way. Afterall, “ we are right inside your heads.” ~doodle dee do~
Pippin—son of the great King Charlemagne—has set out on a journey to find his purpose. He believes he’s destined for a life that’s extraordinary, something more than ordinary existence. Guided by a mysterious troupe of performers and their magnetic ringleader, the Leading Player, Pippin tries to discover where he truly belongs. He goes to war to prove his valor, indulges in fleeting pleasures, flirts with political power, and even considers starting a revolution. But none of it brings the satisfaction he craves. Just when he begins to question everything, Pippin meets Catherine—a widow with a young son—who offers him a glimpse into a quieter, simpler life filled with love, family, and responsibility. It's nothing like the dazzling spectacle the troupe promised him... but maybe it’s exactly what he needs. As the Leading Player urges him toward one final, breathtaking act, Pippin must make a choice: chase the extraordinary life he’s always imagined, or embrace something real.
PIPPIN is presented in special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
