Letter from the President Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, Each year our Annual Report gives us the opportunity to show you how Christian Brothers Academy is carrying out its important mission of providing a quality Catholic education to our students. We are certainly proud of the accomplishments of our students, and we are grateful to you who support us in our work.

Over the years our Board of Trustees and school administration have worked hard to make sure that we are on a solid financial footing. The National Catholic Educational Association reported in its recent publication that the number of Catholic high schools continued to decline this past year. For those of us involved in Catholic education, this trend is certainly disturbing. Thankfully, Christian Brothers Academy is blessed to have a full enrollment, excellent academic programs, outstanding athletic teams and extracurricular activities, an active Campus Ministry office and Christian Service program.

The Brothers are truly grateful to all of you who have played such a vital part in supporting our mission for almost 60 years! From the Academy’s humble beginnings in 1959, the Brothers and our colleagues have had the privilege of educating the young men who come to us each year. It is an awesome responsibility to help form these students into the men God has called each of them to be.

Today, CBA is in an excellent position to continue carrying out our mission thanks to the generous support of our alumni and benefactors. Just as in the time of St. John Baptist De La Salle, our world needs men who are intellectually mature, morally sound and rooted in faith. Thank you for all that you do for the benefit of these young men.

Letter from the Board Chair Dear Alumni, Friends and Family, Over the past year, the Academy has enjoyed continued success in all aspects of campus life. We are blessed to have an extraordinarily dedicated faculty and administration, surrounded by alumni, parents and friends who give so much back to CBA. Under Br. Frank’s leadership, we have reached out to more alumni than ever before, and these men continue to support their alma mater through their annual giving to The Fund for the Academy, their participation in social, academic and spiritual events on campus, and their support of our endowed and annual scholarship funds.

The generosity and vibrancy of CBA’s alumni community is inspiring to all of us.

Each year, I like to mention one or two distinguishing features of the CBA experience that, for me, seem to stand out. Our scholarship endowment funds continue to expand, making it possible for us to offer young men the opportunity to compete for academic, community, faith, and performing arts merit-based scholarships. This places the Academy in a leadership role among Catholic secondary schools nationally, and with your generosity, the program will continue to grow. I encourage you to visit the CBA website under Academics to read what is available to our students.

Also of note is the enthusiasm of our parents. I run into CBA parents constantly in all types of social settings, and the unsolicited positive feedback I receive about CBA is gratifying. Their excitement and “all in” support of our mission is infectious. Whether it is hosting one of our neighborhood summer welcome parties for new freshmen, supporting our athletic teams in every way, volunteering in the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Clubs, or helping produce The CBA Jazz Series for our performing arts program, they are the lifeblood of the Academy.

CBA Voted Best Athletic Program in the State The distinction of best non-public athletics program in the state was once again awarded to CBA by ShopRite Supermarkets & the NJSIAA in a special school assembly. This marked CBA’s second straight ShopRite Cup and our 8th overall!

Fall 2017

A Focus on Interactive Education Principal R. Ross Fales instituted a new “Period Zero” for special coursework. Students across every grade level are now able to pursue hands-on learning opportunities in subjects like robotics, digital marketing and theatre arts. The courses run from 7:30 a.m. to 8:10 a.m., before the school day’s official 8:20 a.m. start.

Fall 2017

Legends of the Fall In one of the best fall seasons in CBA Athletics history, Soccer and XC both took home the title at the Non-Public A State Championships.

Soccer went on to be dubbed NJ.com’s “Team of the Year,” and XC took their talents to yet another appearance at the Nike Cross Nationals.

Colt Power As part of outside the classroom learning initiatives, Environmental Science students in Mrs. Bednarz's class took a tour of the cogeneration electrical generating station in Lakewood, NJ. The students got an inside look into the frontlines of the energy industry and one of 33 power plants owned by an international energy corporation.

February 2017

Reconnecting with the Alumni Network More than 100 CBA alumni from the '60s onward took part in the sixth annual winter Networking Night held at Beacon Hill Country Club.

This year's Beacon Hill Networking Night will take place on February 22, 2018, with Bishop David M. O'Connell as keynote speaker. Tickets will be available January 8th at cbalincroftnj.org.

A Winter Classic Win Bouncing back from a defeat on Military Appreciation Night, CBA Hockey notched a 3-1 victory against Don Bosco at the CBA Winter Classic, held under the lights at Navesink Country Club.

Founders Cup Firsts!

At the most heavily-attended game in CBA history, and CBA’s first-ever livestream broadcast to fans across the world, the inaugural Founders Cup basketball game was a triumph, with the Colts downing RBC 64-54 during their first regular season matchup in 35 years.

March 2017

More Madness CBA alumni raised over $34,000 in the March Madness Giving Challenge. The Class of 1982 took the top honor, followed closely by 1984 (last year’s victor), 1979 and 2000. Additionally, 1985 and 2013 each had over 30 members participate—helping earn them a spot at the Jersey Shore Summer Celebration, recognizing our winning classes.

For the fourth time since 2011, the CBA Indoor Track team captured the 4xMile title at the New Balance Indoor National Championships held at the Armory in New York City.

National Math Masters CBA's team of juniors and seniors earned “Honorable Mention” in the Moody’s Mega Math Challenge—a distinction given to teams that score in the top 4% of the nation's most prestigious national high school modeling competition.

Spring 2017

Learning in the Big Apple Several CBA clubs embarked on separate trips for once-in-alifetime experiences in nearby NYC. CBA’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America walked the floor of the NYSE and met with alumni in investment banking. CBA’s Tech Club enjoyed a private presentation of IBM’s Watson supercomputer.

Leading The Way in Education CBA hosted area school professionals and Middle States representatives for its “Middle States Sustaining Excellence Colloquium.” CBA Class of 1982 and NYU Stern professor Dr. Mark Brennan delivered the keynote address preceding facultyled presentations on CBA’s innovations and aspirations for the educational sector.

Innovation at the High School Level Seniors Travis Schuhardt, Joe LaForgia, Ethan Bateman, and Nicholas Karris presented their research findings in poetic analysis, robotics, music theory and statistics at the 2017 CBA Scholars Colloquium, the capstone to their participation in the 2-year Scholars Program.

CBA’s Fifty-Fifth Commencement Exercises The 233-member graduating class was awarded $23.6 million in merit-based college scholarships, completed 23,600 service hours, included 27 members of the National Honor Society, and 44 student-athletes committed to continuing their sport at the collegiate level. 220 of those graduates are now attending schools ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

Kevin Eubanks Headlines CBA Jazz Series The CBA Jazz Series brought guitarist and onetime Tonight Show bandleader Kevin Eubanks to campus for an evening of top-level jazz, with student musicians of the CBA Jazz Ensemble.

Previous visiting musicians who have performed in the annual Jazz Series include David Benoit, Terence Blanchard, Ravi Coltrane, Yellowjackets and Max Weinberg.

June 2017

The Summer Show Must Go On Pegasus Production Company kept the magic alive in Henderson Theatre this summer, with three productions: June’s “It’s Only a Play,” July’s “Footloose,” and August’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” Students teamed up with Pegasus alumni as well as professionals from The Premier Theatre Company to bring these shows to life.

Putt Perfection CBA Golf capped an extraordinary season, going 16-0 in the regular season and winning the Division, County, Conference, State Sectional, and Tournament of Champions titles. CBA was named NJ.com’s “Team of the Year,” and longtime head coach Tim Sewnig earned national recognition as All-USA Boys “Golf Coach of the Year,” by USA Today.

Christian Service at CBA Living the Lasallian Values

There is no question that high school students today are faced with busy schedules. From clubs and sports to keeping up with their studies, it may seem impossible to find time to serve those in need.

internationally, to give back to those in need. Students who can take time away from their studies have the opportunity to fly across the country, or sometimes even internationally, to give back to those in need.

Christian Brothers Academy students, however, have illustrated year after year that no matter how busy they may be, there is always time to help those in their local community and around the world.

One of the most popular annual service experiences students look forward to is the trip to De La Salle Blackfeet School in Browning, Montana. The school, located near the Canadian border, is in a poverty stricken area where many families face drug and alcohol addiction issues.

The school’s mission is to prepare fourth through eighthgrade students for high school, with the belief that a strong foundation will help increase high school graduation rates later on. “We have to give these kids a good foundation so that they will graduate,” said CBA theology teacher Matthew Butler.

Though Academy men must complete at least 50 service hours prior to graduation, they often go above and beyond, giving more of themselves than required. Impressively, last year’s class completed more than 26,000 hours of service, averaging 100 hours per student.

CBA provides numerous types of service opportunities and experiences that cater to the different needs of the student body. Students can participate in on-campus fundraisers or afterschool service trips to neighboring towns.

Students who can take time away from their studies have the opportunity to fly across the country, or sometimes even

During each trip – one in the fall and one in the spring – 12 students make the journey out to Montana. Sign-ups for the trip are on a first-come, first-serve basis, causing students to line up early on sign-up day to ensure their spot, according to Butler.

To get to Montana, students take two flights and a bus ride before arriving at their new home for the week – a bunkhouse near the school. Once there, the young men attend Mass at the local church and purchase groceries for the week.

The volunteers spend a majority of their days, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the students at the school. While there, they split up into separate classrooms and have the opportunity to

read with students, serve as tutors or play games with them, among other activities.

Senior Paul Mlodgenski said the trip to Montana can be life changing. “I’ve gained so many life experiences,” Mlodgenski said. “I have a whole new perspective from being in a place that’s in the same country but is completely different than my environment here.”

Senior Gerald Sharpe, who serves as student council president, said the trip sparked his love for service and giving back. “It’s not all about what we do for the students – it’s about what the students do for us,” Sharpe said. “There is no one that comes back from Montana unchanged.”

For Mr. Butler and Director of Campus Ministry Mr. Tim Sewnig, that sentiment is exactly what service trips are all about – students realizing the importance and power of helping those in need. “Hopefully when they’re in a position to facilitate change they will because they’ll see how rough some kids have it,” Butler said.

Sewnig said he has already seen service trips change students for the better. “There’s frequently that kid in your classroom who could blend in with the rear wall and all of a sudden you put him in a position of tutor and he’s fantastic,” Sewnig said.

This year, Academy men will also have the opportunity to travel to Homestead, Florida. Plans are being made for a group of students to travel down south in June to help families of migrant workers.

Students have also helped those in need internationally.

As part of a twinning program, CBA has been paired with Nativity School in Shinara Village, in Eritrea, in Africa.

Nativity is a Christian Brothers school serving 450 students from kindergarten through junior secondary school. CBA students have organized fundraisers to assist the school, while at the same time learning about a different culture.

Not all Academy men travel long distances to help those in need. Students also have the opportunity to work with

Romero Center Ministries in Camden. During a four-day stay, students provide direct services to the less fortunate by volunteering in nursing homes, hospice centers and food kitchens, among other assignments.

Even closer to home, Lasallian Youth students take time out of their own lunch periods every other Tuesday to make sandwiches for the less fortunate. After school, the students take a bus to Asbury Park where some of them distribute the prepared lunches to those in need, while others tutor students at West Side Christian Academy.

There are also numerous on-campus service activities that students participate in throughout the year, including the Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Math teacher Mr. Jim Speidel CBA ’91 has made it his mission to have his homeroom purchase the most food items for the drive each year. His enthusiasm has been matched by his students every year, helping the homeroom collect more than 105,000 food items total in the last 10 years. “It’s a loving, giving community here,” Speidel said.

In addition to the annual food drive, students participate in gift card drives benefitting children in local hospitals, gather school supplies for hurricane victims, work with young adults with autism, tend to an on-campus garden that benefits local food banks, and volunteer at nursing homes and hospice centers, among many other opportunities. “Service is a cornerstone of the school,” Butler said.

No matter the need or the cause, students have made it their mission to put service before self. “Ultimately the people that we are helping, help us, because we are seeing Jesus through them and they are seeing Jesus through us. It’s really amazing,” Sharpe said.

The CBA Endowment The CBA Endowment is the financial cornerstone upon which the Academy’s place in the future will be secured. Now valued at over $21 million, the endowment will one day provide a steady source of income to support the students, faculty, programs and activities of the Academy.

Endowments are essential to the future of Catholic education and Christian Brothers Academy because they provide a guaranteed, never-ending source of income. Consisting of a general endowment and numerous individual named funds, the income earned from the CBA Endowment will help assure that a CBA education is available for thousands of future students.

Establishing a personal endowment is an act of great generosity and vision. Benefactors who decide to create an endowment do so because they understand the importance of supporting an institution not only during their life time, but for generations to come. These visionary individuals and families are building an extraordinary resource and lasting legacy.

Many supporters choose to establish a named endowed fund in order to honor a loved one, or to memorialize an important figure in their life, ensuring that their name and generosity will forever be a guiding force in our institution’s success.

Scholarship Program Making education affordable and accessible is at the core of our mission at Christian Brothers Academy.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle, our patron and the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools strongly believed that education is the key to equality and progress. We believe every student has a right to an excellent education and scholarships can open the doors to make that possible.

So many students tell us their lives are truly transformed because of the gifts that fund our scholarship program. Without the generosity of our benefactors, many students would not be able to attend this private Lasallian academy dedicated to helping students reach their fullest potential.

Not only do the student recipients benefit from these gifts, so does CBA. For donors, planned giving offers a way to make a strong statement about something they have cherished in their lives, and about the values they wish to support for the future.

Signum Fidei Society Donors who notify CBA of a planned gift become members of the Signum Fidei Society. Signum Fidei (Sign of the Faith) was selected as the motto of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in 1751. The motto appears prominently on the Institute's coat of arms, and also on the school seal of Christian Brothers Academy.

• 233 members of the Class of 2017 received their diplomas on May 18. 47 of them graduated with distinction, 29 were members of the National Honor Society, and in September 2017, five were named National AP Scholars.

• 94% of the class enrolled at colleges and universities ranked among the top national or regional institutions by the US News & World Report.

• The class provided more than 23,600 hours of volunteer assistance to local social service organizations over their four years at CBA — more than double the service hours required for graduation.

A look back in time

The Round Barn As you drive onto Christian Brothers Academy’s campus, you travel a short distance and are greeted by the shimmering windows of the Quinn Library and the main office. To your left is the long, low Sprint Barn, which houses our crew team’s practice water tanks, ergs and equipment, as well as the maintenance shop. Just a short distance further down the drive sits the original school building, Henderson Hall, a former stable building which was converted for classroom use when CBA opened in 1959. Beyond these buildings lies another iconic structure that predates the Academy, known today as the Round Barn — or simply “The Barn.”

Like several structures on campus, The Barn is a remnant of the property’s past as a racehorse breeding and training facility, originally part of the Whitney Greentree Stables thoroughbred operation, and later the Holsey family's Jay Cee Farms. (Hence the Academy’s selection of its Colt mascot.) Prior to the property’s purchase in 1959 by CBA’s founders, the Barn’s three hundred yard track was used exclusively to exercise and train horses.

But as with most things, time has not been kind to the Barn. The once loose dirt horse track has been pounded nearly rock-hard under the feet of thousands of CBA athletes. The back stretch seems to have suffered the most at the hands of Father Time due to burrowing groundhogs,

Br. William Martin, who joined CBA’s faculty in 1960, remembers fondly the first few years of the school’s management of the dirt track while horses were still housed on campus. “In a pinch, if the track needed harrowing, two tractors could fit side by side with a few inches of clearance and make their way around, one doing the inside and one on the outside” recalls Br. Martin. “If it had been a boring day, sometimes we’d send the tractors opposite ways to get a bit of competition going.”

The building's athletic history expanded when CBA students began to use the Round Barn to continue their training through inclement weather and intramural sports.

as partly responsible for the record setting 2014 4x1 mile relay team at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. The team of Blaise Ferro, Michael McClemens, Francis Bogan, and Tommy Rooney etched their names into indoor track history by resetting the national record to 17 minutes, 7.17 seconds from the previous 17 minutes, 20 seconds set by Chariho Regional from Rhode Island.

Bennett himself recalled a particular stretch of below freezing practice days in the Barn during his senior year. “If it was zero degrees outside then it was zero degrees inside, but there were no shortcuts.

There was no giving up. We wanted to succeed and make sure the tradition of winning survived,” said Bennett. turning the track into an obstacle course. According to Br. William, the windows have always needed constant maintenance and repair and the elements have begun to gain the upper hand in the fight to keep the Barn in good shape. The electric lights added to the building in the late 1960s are now without power, making the setting sun the quitting whistle for most track or cross country workouts inside.

The cross country team has continued to do just that with an impressive dual meet winning streak that now extends to 357 meets. The streak began in 1974 when the team of Phil Shaheen, Al Campanella, Rich Desmond, Chris O’Brien, Sean Higgins, Pete McDonough, Jim Ansell, and Jack Surgent swept Marist High School to start the season.

The once new asphalt basketball courts on the infield of the track are now overrun with cracks and vegetation. The bitter rivalries fought here during intramural basketball no longer continue, although good-natured arguments about allegedly questionable calls still come up at alumni gatherings. No more do students from the surrounding grade schools play pick-up games during summer basketball camp. The crew team now uses the area to store the team’s boats and trailers.

But none of this stops CBA’s elite cross country and track programs. Some might see the Round Barn as just a circular building in a rundown state, but for the students and alumni of Christian Brothers Academy, the Round Barn represents so much more. Opening the barn door and walking onto the track is like walking into a time machine. The musty smell of old wood and dirt mixed with the moisture in the air brings you back to the very beginnings of the school. Its past as a horse farm and its future as a place of education for young men collide to bring you back to your days as an eighteen year old competing with the letters CBA across your chest. In the words of Bennett, “The Round Barn is a physical representation of the hard work and dedication that CBA has become synonymous with, and will continue to be known for well beyond its fiftyeight year history.”

Now, thanks to CBA’s energetic social media strategy, everyone can share in the happenings at the school through multiple social media platforms.

With almost 11,000 alumni, nearly 1,000 students, and dozens of esteemed faculty and friends achieving remarkable things in the community, the good news at CBA is truly endless. The Academy's marketing team is constantly serving up the latest news, photos and videos to an audience that craves great CBA-related content.

On the Christian Brothers Academy Facebook page, news and video posts flow throughout the school week.

With almost daily weekday posts, those who “like” the page can hear about student achievements, enjoy recaps of CBA events, and get excited about what’s on the horizon.

Bringing the School Day to You Ever wonder what daily life is like at the Academy? While students remain in-the-know, parents and alumni have always had to rely on secondhand accounts of milestones, events, traditions and successes.

Not limited to just written content, video clips and livestreaming are also part of the Academy’s curated

social media experience. Last May, CBA faithful from around the country were able to watch a Facebook Live stream of the 2017 Commencement Ceremony.

With nearly 10,000 followers across CBA’s school social media accounts, the CBA fanbase is constantly growing.

In a similar “what’s happening” fashion, the @CBALincroft Twitter account is a constant stream of information. Twitter allows users the ability to quickly share each others’ updates. Both students and parents can find club meeting locations, get live updates from a student council event, and see the inner workings

Connecting a Passionate Alumni Base Aside from giving CBA alumni a glimpse into the current school community, the Academy has extended its reach to CBA graduates through alumni-specific pages on both Facebook and LinkedIn.

A special CBA Lincroft Alumni Facebook page feeds alumni-centric news and events straight to over 2,000 followers. Alums can find event sponsorship information, see updates on alumni competitions such as our March Madness Giving Challenge, and get a behind-the-scenes view of alumni events throughout the year.

The CBA LinkedIn page allows alumni to expand their business and personal networks with other Academy graduates. The Christian Brothers Academy LinkedIn page follows a similar theme as Facebook, with the added benefits of job alerts and business connections.

Some of the best graphics and photos in high school social media can be found on the @CBAColts Instagram account. On Instagram, followers can see pre-game hype posts, crisp action photos from CBA photographer Larry Levanti, and engaging post-game reports. Fans can also catch quick

highlight reels and in-house videos on Instagram.

Cutting-Edge Athletic Apps The best part about CBA Athletics online presence? The Colts have their very own collegiate-style website—LetsGoColts.com—along with a sports-specific mobile app: ColtsCenter. Both are filled to the brim with CBA sports news, schedules and scores for students, parents and alums alike.

LIVE from the Academy In conjunction with the release of the ColtsCenter app, the Academy introduced its own broadcasting channel: The CBA Digital Network, a joint effort by CBA's Advancement and Athletics offices.

The CBA Digital Network debuted in February 2017 for the highlyanticipated Homecoming basketball game against RBC. While over 900 fans packed the gym, hundreds more from around the world tuned in through a livestream of the game that could be viewed on the ColtsCenter app and on LetsGoColts.com. Parents on business trips in Japan, alumni on expeditions in Ireland, and Colts fans unable to make it to Lincroft watched as CBA emerged victorious over the Caseys.

the CBA Digital Network provides media-focused students with the opportunity to get hands-on experience, working with HD audiovisual equipment, being a part of the pre-production process, and better understanding the nature of what being part of the industry entails.

The ultimate goal of the CBA Digital Network is to become a completely student-run endeavor.

Currently, students are trained to work the multi-camera setup, run the production hub, and even jump onair for commentary.

Br. Ralph Montedoro, CBA principal 1991-2005, marked his 50th year as a De la Salle Christian Brother last spring. Currently serving as director of the Brothers Community at CBA and as executive vice President, Br. Ralph first joined the CBA faculty in 1972. He received a standing ovation at the graduation ceremony for the class of 2017, which included 15 young men whose fathers had attended CBA during Br. Ralph’s years as teacher and associate principal.
