OH BROTHERS! DUDEK, DALATRI POWER CBA by Gregg Lerner on Wed, Apr 5, 2017 Dalatri and Dudek. The names are etched in Christian Brothers Academy baseball lore, symbolic of power and a high standard of excellence. They are once again staples in the Colts’ lineup, legacies being carried out by younger siblings saddled with the heavy burden of upholding all that’s attached to the family name. However, the weight no match when measured against the tradition of the program their associated with. Andrea Dalatri, the younger brother of two-time News 12 Varsity Player of the Year and current North Carolina ace Luca Dalatri, and twins John and Eddie Dudek, following in the footsteps of slugging brother Joe, currently in the Kansas City Royals’ organization, respectfully acknowledge all the past accomplishments, but are motivated to carve out their own niche. “We do preach the name of the front is more than the one on the back of the jersey,” said CBA cocah Marty Kenney, who, in his 44th season piloting the Colts, had some wisdom to share. “They understand. I told them I don’t want them to live off reputation but to add to it.” All three heeded the advice on Wednesday. John Dudek and Dalatri each blasted a two-run homer while Eddie Dudek complemented some slick defense in left field with a single and run scored as Christian Brothers rolled past host Manalapan, 91. “I really don’t think about it too much,” said John Dudek, who homered in the fifth when CBA scored three times to open a 7-1 cushion. “Joe is a good role model to look at but I try to be the best player I can be to help the team. It’s time for me and Eddie to step up and continue it.” Dalatri, who played third a year ago as a sophomore, is one of a handful of Colts back from last year’s 21-9 crew that won their third straight Monmouth County and Shore Conference Tournament titles. Eager to lead by example, he finished 3 for 4 with three runs, three RBI and a two-run homer in the seventh that capped the scoring. “We still have a lot of good players on this team,” said Dalatri. “Our mentality remains the same, to go out there and win. We all believe in each other and what we can do. Every at bat counts and all we’re trying to do is compete.” Sophomore shortstop Tommy DeTullio set an auspicious tone for CBA, leading off the game with a home run to left, part of a 2-for-4 afternoon. Junior second baseman Jack Harnisch lined an RBI single, junior catch Tom Rodgers lifted a sacrifice fly and freshman designated hitter Mason Wolf laced a run-scoring single during a three-run fourth to up the margin to 4-0. After junior right fielder Jack Schweitzer got Manalapan to within 4-1 with an RBI single in the fourth, CBA answered with three more in the fifth. Dudek backed an RBI single by Dalatri with a towering two-run blast to right to make it 7-1. Left-hander Blaise Venancio was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst. The junior scattered three hits, walked one and struck out two over five innings to notch his first varsity win. Sophomore righty Spencer Bauer retired the final six batters without incident, stamping the victory with his second strikeout. Christian Brothers Academy (2-0) Manalapan (1-1)

CBA BEAT FREEHOLD WITH A 5 RUN RALLY IN THE 7TH Steven Falk, Asbury Park Press, April 10, 2017

FREEHOLD - It is a new-look Christian Brothers Academy baseball team. Pitcher/first baseman Luca Dalatri and catcher Brandon Martorano, who led the Colts to three consecutive Shore Conference Tournament and Monmouth County Tournament championships and "The Quadruple Crown'' in 2015 that included the NJSIAA Non-Public A championship over the last three seasons, are now at the University of North Carolina. In their place is a team with few returnees and a lot of new players when it comes to varsity play. However, CBA has not missed a beat. It is off to a 4-0 start after it was opportunistic and scratched out five runs in the top of the seventh inning to record a 5-1 win over Freehold on Monday in a Shore Conference Class A North game. It was the second time the Colts (4-0, 3-0) defeated the Colonials (3-2, 2-2) in an eight-day span. They defeated Freehold 1-0 on April 3. "What I told them (his players) is now we've got to do it collectively,'' said CBA coach Marty Kenney, who is in his 44th season and is the state's second all-time winningest coach with 781. "Nobody is going to replace them (Dalatri and Martorano). We have to collectively do what they (Dalatri and Martorano) did. "They've met the challenge, and I think the fact not too many people gave them respect (before the season started) - we kind of knew that. I talked to them about that. We talked about 'the front of the jersey being more important than the name on the back of the jersey, and you have to live up to certain expectations and raise your performance'.'' CBA has won so far with pitching and defense. It has allowed just four runs, and, according to Kenney, has committed just one error. The Colts do have a standout pitcher in junior Nick Hohenstein, who pitched six innings of one-run, four-hit ball while throwing 98 pitches on Monday after he pitched a one-hitter against Freehold on April 3. "I knew we'd play defense,'' Kenney said. "I knew their capabilities last year, not just the guys coming back but the guys coming up (from sub varsity levels). They had success on the lower levels. Whether it translates to this level, you're never really sure. "The pitching has come along. We've got five or six guys who can throw strikes and compete against good hitters. We're putting the ball in play and putting ourselves in position where other teams have to beat us. We're not beating ourselves. "They've been great to work with. They come to practice hard and they play hard. I don't have to motivate, like I do a lot of teams.'' Freehold was in position to win 1-0 headed into the seventh on Monday as senior Tom Holdorf had allowed four hits over the first six innings on just 87 pitches. However, things changed quickly in the seventh. Tommy Rodgers led off the seventh with a double and then Joe Sparber's infield pop-up to between first and second base was dropped. Joe Duffy's single to right scored courtesy runner Mike Martorano with the tying run after Martorano had stolen third when

nobody was covering third with the Colonials' infield playing for a sacrifice bunt. Another error loaded the bases before freshman Mason Wolf's sacrifice fly to right on a 3-2 pitch plated the go-ahead run. Hohenstein made it 3-1 with an RBI single and Andrea Dalatri made it 4-1 with a run-scoring single. The final run of the inning scored on a walk to John Dudek. "We had a couple of mental lapses, and those are things that maybe we go over one more time if we have an outside practice,'' said Freehold coach Jon Block. "We've had more games than we've had outside practices. Sometimes you can get exposed, and CBA exposed us.'' There was a discrepancy over Holdorf's pitch count in the middle of the seventh inning rally. Kenney thought Holdorf had exceeded the 110-pitch limit for a day that are pitchers are allowed under the NJSIAA's pitch count rule instituted this season when he began pitching to Hohenstein, but Freehold had Holdorf at 109 pitches when he began pitching to Hohenstein, which meant he was able to finish pitching to Hohenstein before he had come out of the game. The home team's pitch count is regarded as official under the pitch count rule. Holdorf wound up throwing 112 pitches before he came out.

JOE ESCANDON DAZZLES IN VARSITY DEBUT, COLTS ADVANCE TO MCT SEMIS Matt Manley, April 30, 2017, Shore Sports Network MIDDLETOWN - Christian Brothers Academy veteran head coach Marty Kenney knew he was going to use sophomore lefthander Joe Escandon at the varsity level at some point during the heavy part of the Colts' schedule. When his time came did come at the varsity level, Escandon was only tasked with facing a Howell team coming off a 19-run outburst in the Monmouth County Tournament Quarterfinals In a tournament game Saturday against a potent offensive team, Escandon looked the part of a seasoned veteran by pitching a four-hit shutout in his first ever varsity appearance as the Colts beat Howell, 3-0. "(Escandon) was originally going to start Monday against Marlboro but because of what happened with our pitch counts over the last couple of days, I said to him, 'We've got to move you up a day,'" Kenney said. "I thought this might be a lot of pressure for him, but he's also very composed. Things don't bother him and he commands the strike zone. He keeps everything down." About 24 hours after scoring 19 runs against Middletown South to earn a game against the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Howell could not figure out CBA's 5-foot-9 sophomore left-hander. Escandon surrendered allowed one hit in both the first and third innings and, at one point, retired nine straight batters from the fourth to the seventh inning. "I was definitely a little nervous at first," Escandon said. "I tried to just focus on making my pitches like I would in any other game. Having a really good defense gave me confidence that I could throw strikes and get outs. It also really helped to get an early lead."

"As soon as Joe got through the first three innings, I just knew he was going to cruise from there," Colts junior Nick Hohenstein said. "He pitches to us in practice and we see the same stuff we saw today, so it wasn't really a surprise today." When Howell did break up the streak of nine straight retired and threatened with runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, Escandon battled Rebels catcher Frank Cianciotta to 3-2 count and tied him up with a fastball on the inside corner to end the game. The strikeout was the eighth of the outing for Escandon and it came on the 90th pitch of the afternoon for the sophomore left-hander. Escandon also did not issue a walk, hit one batter and threw 68 of his 90 pitches for strikes. "I was more worried about getting seven innings than how effective he'd be," Kenney said. "I didn't know what pitch count he could handle effectively. "We had (Nick) Hohenstein ready. Chances are if he had given up another hit, we would have went to him to get the last out." Escandon also benefitted from another strong defensive game by CBA, which did not commit an error on Saturday. Nine of Escandon's outs came on ground balls and after the third inning, all of the outs the sophomore recorded were either ground balls or strikeouts. CBA needed the pitching and defense to be sharp since its offense managed just three hits against Howell junior left-hander Mike Walsh, who allowed three unearned runs in six innings. The Colts gave their sophomore starter a quick 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first - one on a wild pitch and another on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Andrea Dalatri. The Colts added an insurance run in the bottom of the six when Walsh's pickoff throw to first base got away and allowed courtesy runner Ed Dudek to score from second base. "Other people have to contribute," Kenney said. "I wish we had hit a little better, but the two things we have done is pitch and play defense. I told them if we hit a little bit, we might be undefeated right now." Saturday's win keeps CBA's hopes of a fourth consecutive Monmouth County Tournament championship in play. This one would be particularly impressive for the program considering the last three came with Luca Dalatri - the all-time wins leader in Shore Conference history - leading the pitching staff and current University of North Carolina teammate Brandon Martorano as his battery mate. "Every day, we're reminded that there are alumni that wore the same jersey that we do and they won these same tournaments," Hohenstein said. "The balls we put on the outfield wall are a reminder and the years on those balls are attached to the guys who were on those teams. We want to put one of those balls up there too." Hohenstein and Andrea Dalatri are the only two returning starters from last year's team and despite the inexperience, the Colts are the No. 1 seed in the county tournament and still have a chance to win a tournament title. They also have an outside chance to win a Class A North division championship, which last year's team did not accomplish. "It's a different group," Hohenstein said. "We're a young team, but we find a way to get it done. We had a rough stretch last week, but we've played good baseball the last two days and we're back on the right track." CBA will host No. 5 Freehold Boro in the MCT semifinals on Saturday. The two Class A North rivals have already met twice this season, with CBA winning both meetings. Hohenstein earned the win in both starts. "They've seen us twice already and both games were right down to the wire," Hohenstein said. "Both could have gone either way and were able to win both. I would expect it will be pretty much the same thing next weekend."

2018 Pre-Season PREVIEWS Shore Sports Network “A North” Capsule CHRISTIAN BROTHERS ACADEMY Head Coach: Marty Kenney, 45th season 2017 Record: 18-10 (9-5, second in A North) Key Returners: Nick Hohenstein (Sr., RHP/OF), Tommy DiTullio (Jr., SS), Andrea Dalatri (Sr., 3B), Johnny Dudek (Sr., 1B), Jack Harnisch (Sr., 2B), Matt Fitzsimmons (Sr., 1B), Blaise Venancio (Sr., LHP), Matt Barnes (Sr., RHP), Matt Kern (Sr., C), Joe Escondon (Jr., LHP) Key Losses: Joe Sparber (C) Key Newcomers: Mason Wolf (So., C), Anthony Celestre (Jr., 2B/OF), Braedin Hunt (So., RHP/OF), Pat Reilly (So., RHP), Jake Lawrie (Sr., LHP) While CBA’s 2017 wasn’t exactly hurting for talent, the Colts entered the year as somewhat of an unknown after relying so much on current University of North Carolina sophomores Luca Dalatri and Brandon Martorano for three very successful seasons. Although CBA did not hang a banner and did not crack the Shore Sports Network Top 10, the Colts made some very important strides with a team that only featured two seniors. Now the Colts return a team with a deep pitching staff, a dangerous lineup and very good athletes around the diamond. Senior Nick Hohenstein has been an impact player and an All-Shore performer in each of his past two seasons with the Colts and enjoyed his best all-around season as a junior. In addition to running an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of 1.109, the La Salle recruit pitched to a 1.78 ERA and a 56-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 55 innings on the mound, setting new career marks for himself. The Colts also got a breakout year from left-hander and St. Joseph’s commit Blaise Venancio, who sported a sparkling 1.25 ERA over 50 1/3 innings. The third starter was a committee of capable pitchers and among that group this year will be senior right-hander Matt Barnes, junior lefthander Joe Escondon, senior left-hander Jake Lawrie and promising sophomore right-hander Braedin Hunt. CBA will be able to keep runs off the board with its standout pitching, but also thanks to a strong infield defense that returns in full. Junior shortstop and Bryant University commit Tommy DiTullio debuted as one of the Shore’s best defenders in his first year of varsity ball, while senior third baseman Andrea Dalatri drove in a team-best 28 runs out of the clean-up spot. Senior second baseman Jack Harnisch is also back to pair with DiTullio up the middle and seniors Johnny Dudek and Matt Fitzsimmons will split the first base and designated hitter duties. CBA is aiming to put some more runs on the board – something that eluded the Colts more than they would have liked last year – to support a stellar pitching staff that will make it a team to beat in 2018.

ASBURY PARK PRESS PREVIEW PACKAGE Steven Falk CLASS A NORTH This division and Class B North appear to be the Shore Conference's best from top to bottom. The teams in Class A North spent most of last season beating each other before Freehold emerged as the division winner late in the season. Christian Brothers Academy, with a deep pitching staff, led by Nick Hohenstein, Matt Barnes and Blaise Venancio and a solid lineup, led by Hohenstein,Tommy DiTullio and Andrea Dalatri, appears to be the favored. The Colts, however, have little margin for error. They lost four games 1-0 last year and won several games by either one run or in the late innings. Manalapan, with almost its entire lineup and pitching returning from last season, Freehold, which as always, will pitch well, play good defense and solid fundamental ball, should be in the mix. It would surprise nobody if Freehold Township, with a very good pitching staf, Colts Neck, with a good lineup and Marlboro, with the addition of some transfers are in the mix. Neptune, with hard-thowing junior and University of Kentucky-recruit Ron Cole, will be dangerous. The Scarlet Fliers showed how dangerous they can be in last year's NJSIAA Tournament when they advanced to the Central Group III championship and lost to eventual Group III champion Allentown in 10 innings in the final after they began the state tournament with a 7-12 record and as the No. 14 seed in the section. Howell will always score runs in its cozy home ballpark. The Rebels, if their pitching improves from last year, will also be dangerous.

FIVE PITCHERS TO WATCH 1. Tyler Ras (Middletown North): The University of Alabama recruit has been clocked at 93 miles per hour, according to Middletown North head coach Justin Natanson. He could potentially be a high draft choice in June in Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft. 2. Austin Nappi (Red Bank Catholic): He will not overwhelm anyone with his velocity, but this 10-game winner from last year, knows how to get outs and knows how to pitch in big games. He was unbeaten in tournament games last year as Red Bank Catholic won the Monmouth County and advanced to the Shore Conference Tournament championship game. 3. Craig Larsen (Toms River North): Larsen is another big-game pitcher. He pitched a complete-game three-hitter against Red Bank Catholic in last year's Shore Conference Tournament championship game and he also pitched a complete-game four-hitter in a win over Toms River South in an Ocean County Tournament semifinal. He has signed with the University of Pennsylvania. | 4. Ron Cole (Neptune):The hard-throwing junior, who has made a nonbinding oral commitment to the University of Kentucky, was Neptune's closer in the Scarlet Fliers' Cinderella run to the NJSIAA Central Group III championship game last season. He picked up two saves and a win in 7 1/3 innings of relief in the state tournament as Neptune won three games by a combined total of four runs. 5. Nick DeGennaro (Toms River East): He was the winning pitcher in all three of Toms River East's wins last year and has outstanding control. He struck out 54 and walked four in 39 innings last year. He could lead a Toms River East resurgence this season. He has signed with Stony Brook.

FIVE HITTERS TO WATCH 1. T.J. Scuderi (Toms River South): Scuderi, who has signed with Monmouth University and is also a very good pitcher, hit .388 last season with four home runs, 25 RBI and 12 stolen bases. 2. Nick Hohenstein (Christian Brothers Academy): Hohenstein, who has signed with LaSalle University and is also a standout pitcher, hit. .369 with three home runs and 22 RBI last season. 3. Riley Maypother (St. Rose): An Asbury Park Press All-Shore selection last year as an infielder, Maypother hit. 520 with five home runs, 12 doubles, four triples and 37 RBI./, 4. David Melfi (Jackson Liberty): The junior catcher was an Asbury Park Press First Team All-Shore selection as a designated hitter after a season in which he had two home runs, 15 doubles and 27 RBI. 5. Sal Monticcolo (Holmdel): Monticcolo was named the Shore Conference Class A Central Hitter of the Year last year by the coaches in that division and was an Asbury Park Press Second Team All-Shore selection after a season in which he hit .507 with four home runs, seven doubles, four triples and 24 RBI.

2018 SPRING PRESEASON TRIP FT PIERCE / PT ST. LUCIE, FLORIDA The colts returned to Florida for the 18th time this March. Coach Kenney began taking his teams on a spring trip beginning in 1997. His team’s first trained in Cocoa Beach at Cocoa Expo before moving to the Florida Coast Spring Training facility. The Colts have also participated in the USA Baseball Classic in Memphis Tennessee in 2001. The spring trips provide great weather and facilities to train in each year as well as the opportunity to play against teams from all over the country. An additional benefit is the team comradery that is built over the course of the week at various off-field events and excursions.
