Craig Bales, M.D. Band Physician In 2004, Dr. Bales was asked by David Bertman, Director of Bands at the University of Houston to be the designated physician for the "Spirit of Houston" Marching Band, Cheer and Dance. He continues in that position presently. Dr. Bales holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at El Paso, as well as a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. After serving his country in the United States Navy Medical Corps, he devoted twenty years to the practice of emergency medicine. Since leaving that practice twenty two years ago, he pursued Corrections Medicine, serving as a medical director for the Harris County Community Supervision and Corrections Department (Adult Probation). Having never been a musician himself, Dr. Bales began his association with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from Rosemont, Illinois in 1997. In 2000, he assisted other colleagues develop and organize a multi-disciplinary medical support group within that drum corps - the Cavaliers Medical Group (CMG). Along with Dr. David Pascoe, professor of physiology at Auburn University, Dr. Bales presented and organized the first ever symposium on Music Medicine and Science, held at Auburn University in 2006. Stemming from that project, Dr. Bales and others were instrumental in initiating the Drum Corps Medical Project, in association with Drum Corps International. In 2009, Dr. Bales was named an Honorary Cavalier, and he continues to work with various marching music organizations around the country providing assistance with Performing Arts Medicine. Dr. Bales was a student athletic trainer and foreign exchange student to Germany, as well as an academic scholar, Chief Justice of the Student Association Supreme Court, Young Texan of the Month, and a student teaching assistant in the Department of Biological Sciences while studying at the University of Texas at El Paso. Since entering the medical profession, he has taught emergency medical technician and paramedic courses, been the medical director for a volunteer fire department, an assistant to the Fire Chief of the Houston Fire Department, a physician for the Astrodome, and a presenter for and member of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Currently, Dr. Bales is a member of the Performing Arts Medicine Association, the Texas Music Educators Association, as well as a frequent attendee of the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, IL.
