This summer, we’re seeing a shift: people are making clearer, more deliberate decisions— less reactive, more rooted. Every feature in this issue reflects that mindset.
We open with Legacy in Timber & Stone, a listing that speaks for itself. The scale is significant, but it’s the consistency and the way everything aligns, inside and out, that makes it exceptional.
From there, we turn our focus to design— specifically, Kaitlyn, the senior creative force behind Tamarack’s design division. With a background rooted in both vision and practicality, her work reflects the kind of thoughtfulness that defines Tamarack’s approach: steady, considered, and centred on what truly matters.

Three things I love about summer in Muskoka: the birds chirping at sunrise, a scoop of ice cream melting faster than you can eat it. And the lake, always the lake. There’s a rhythm to the season here that feels both grounding and electric.
In this issue, we spotlight stories that capture the essence of that summer magic. FeverTree elevates the summer cocktail experience with refined simplicity—an ode to thoughtful, quality ingredients that speak for themselves. McNabb Furniture reminds us that great design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about ease, longevity, and creating spaces that feel like home, season after season. Virginia Burt Designs brings nature, art, and science into harmony, revealing how landscape design can
destination where privacy, space, and slow, intentional living are the true luxuries. Though the geography may be different, the appeal feels right at home: a chance to reconnect, recharge, and live well.
Summit Performance shifts the lens again, but the through-line remains: strong habits, clear priorities, and a mindset built for longevity.
We close with Lakewood Beach, a private waterfront community on Lake Erie where buyers are securing lots to create something lasting. Whether it’s a full-time residence or a place to gather for generations, it’s a rare chance to build with purpose in a setting that holds real value.
Thank you for spending time with this issue—hopefully from the dock, the deck, or somewhere just as good.
offer more than beauty—it can be healing. And the Tamarack North Centre stands as a beacon of community vision and tenacity, proof that bold ideas can become beloved institutions.
It’s a joy to bring you another edition filled with stories that inform, inspire, and connect us. Thank you to the brilliant team and partners who make this magazine possible.
We’ve done our best to tell the story—but the beauty of this issue truly unfolds as you turn the pages. All you need to do is dive in!
Wishing you all an amazing summer, hope to see you around!

There are cottages—and then there are estates. This is the latter, in every sense of the word. A storied compound nestled along one of the most tranquil stretches of shoreline, it stands as a tribute to enduring craft, architectural foresight, and the inimitable spirit of Muskoka.
Towering trees and granite outcrops provide a dramatic backdrop for this 12,000 square foot estate, where cedar shake roofing, copper eavestroughs, and hand-set fieldstone blur the line between wilderness and artistry. Poised on a private point, the home is graced with uninterrupted views of both sunrise and sunset—its rare positioning offering a front-row seat to nature’s quietest openings and most radiant farewells. Every inch—from the copper-accented roofline to the nearly 800 feet of shoreline— feels less constructed than composed. The moment you arrive via the winding Unistone drive, there is a subtle shift. You are not just entering a property—you are stepping into a legacy.
A Handcrafted Heirloom
This is not a home that follows trends. It honours tradition with a level of detail that is both extraordinary and deeply intentional. From the outside, you’re greeted by a life-sized moose sculpture and a dramatic log archway, framing a custom-carved front door adorned with wood-inspired hardware. The main floor exterior is wrapped in river rock, while gabled dormers and exposed timber beams nod to Alpine Chalet influence with a distinctly Muskoka soul. The entrance hints at what’s to come: a home designed to astonish—not in grandiosity, but in depth.
Tree-inspired columns—replicas of actual trees from the property—rise through the interior like sculptural totems. Custom furnishings, all
included with the home, were made specifically for these rooms, blending seamlessly with the architecture. Every element feels original, because it is.
At the heart of the home, a towering double-sided fireplace—crafted from river rock and mounted with carved bear heads—anchors the great room. The effect is almost cinematic: vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a view that stretches across the lake. Off to the side, a Muskoka Room lined with custom light fixtures and flagstone floors opens onto a terrace—one of many outdoor living spaces designed for uninterrupted communion with nature.
The kitchen is a showpiece in itself: a hammered copper sink, antler-handled refrigerators, and a stone basin imported from Israel. There are Viking double ovens, warming drawers, a built-in Miele coffee system, and two walk-in pantries. Even the drawer hardware is custom-made. Nearby, a round dining table anchors the circular dining room—a space that feels almost ceremonial in its symmetry and scale.
And everywhere: thoughtful touches. A climate-controlled wine room with dual fridges. A coffee bar with its own ice maker. A mudroom with two washers and two dryers. The kind of details that aren’t added for show—they’re part of the home’s DNA.
Designed to welcome generations, the home offers eight bedrooms and ten bathrooms, with each space thoughtfully designed to balance privacy and connection. Whether gathering around the fireplace, retreating to a lakeside bedroom, or unwinding in a sunlit nook, every

corner of the home invites both togetherness and solitude—crafted to evolve with the needs of those who call it home.
The primary suite, known as “Sunset Bay,” occupies the main floor and includes a gas fireplace, a private screened-in porch, and birch-bark French doors. The ensuite is an ode to rustic luxury: a hammered copper soaker tub, a makeup vanity, and wooden burl sinks—all framed by windows that pull the outdoors in.
Upstairs, a hidden children’s playroom transforms from built-in cabinetry into a whimsical fort, complete with Narnia-esque vibes. There’s a secondary master suite with its own fireplace, washer/dryer, Juliet balcony, and full lakeview ensuite. Even the office—with built-ins and an oversized desk—feels like a writer’s retreat.
An elevator connects all floors, ensuring accessibility. Two staircases enchant the home: one is dramatic and sculptural; the other discreet and practical. A convenient playroom near the recreation and bar area adds flexibility—whether used for games, gatherings, or a quiet retreat of its own.
The Lower Level: Leisure as Art Descend to the walk-out basement and the home continues to astonish. The theatre room features starlit ceilings, twinkling constellations, and shooting stars—surrounding 13 plush seats and a cinema-scale projector. The Whiskey Bay Saloon, a Western-themed entertainment space, includes saddle bar stools, a cowboy-hat-shaped sink, swinging doors, and a stone-clad fireplace. There’s a shuffleboard table, a poker room, and even a fridge styled as a cottage
privy—every detail tongue-in-cheek, yet immaculately executed.
There’s also a gym with a stand-up tanning bed, plus guest suites with generous walkin closets—spaces designed for comfort, privacy, and ease of living.
The Boathouse: A Destination of Its Own
Designed to mirror the main house, the architectural boathouse is clad in cedar shake with a composite deck. It houses three powered slips with innovative docklift technology that lowers both the boat and dock simultaneously. Two Sea-Doo lifts and four fishing hatches make it as functional as it is beautiful.
Inside, the boathouse includes a main floor lounge area and a dining space. The outdoor space opens wide to the lake and features power-retractable screens that keep bugs out while welcoming the breeze. Whether fishing in the rain or dining under stars, this is lakefront living elevated to its most refined.
The Grounds: Nature Curated
Every path on this property is deliberate. Interlock walkways lead to a private beach with a flagstone patio and soft, natural sand—perfect for barefoot mornings, gentle swim-ins, or sun-drenched afternoons at the water’s edge. In the hush of early evening, the beach becomes something almost sacred—a quiet theatre for golden light, lapping waves, and the simple wonder of stillness. A putting green is tucked between pines and rock faces. Outdoor kitchen spaces, multiple terraces, and lush perennial gardens add layers of beauty and use.
The estate’s full 2.36 acres are curated— but never tamed. It is a rare Muskoka feat: landscaping that frames, rather than competes with, the natural splendour of the land.
What defines this home is not just its scale but its soul. Every stone, every timber beam, every copper accent was chosen not for effect, but for meaning. It is a place of rare cohesion—where luxury lives in the details, and the details live forever. This home does not try to impress. It simply is: resolute, rooted, and unforgettable.
This is not a listing to tour. It’s a place to inhabit. To host and to hide. To be loud with laughter and quiet with contemplation. A home where memories aren’t made—they unfold, naturally.
This is Muskoka, not reimagined but realized. Not just a place to stay. A place to belong.
And yet, for all that can be said, there are scarcely words enough to capture the intricacy of this home. Its beauty lives not only in what you see but especially in what you feel. In the quiet craftsmanship. In the stories etched into timber and stone. In the kind of detail that defies description and instead simply must be experienced.
THIS IS MUSKOKA, NOT REIMAGINED— BUT REALIZED. NOT JUST A PLACE TO STAY. A PLACE TO BELONG.
You can have the best tequila, the rarest rum, the most revered vodka, but if the mixer falls flat, so does the drink. Fever-Tree understood that long before the world caught on. They approached the mixer not as an accessory, but as the foundation, transforming how we build, savour, and share cocktails. For years, mixers were an afterthought—overlooked, underdeveloped, and mass-produced with little regard for taste, texture, or quality. Then came Fever-Tree. With a single bottle of Premium Tonic Water, they sparked a global rethink: if three-quarters of your drink is the mixer, why not make it exceptional?
From that spark, Fever-Tree reshaped the cocktail experience. Whether you are building a dockside bar cart or hosting sunset cocktails at the cottage, the mixer in your glass now says as much about your taste as the spirit it is paired with.
“If ¾ of your drink is the mixer, mix with the best,” says Alexis Green, National Marketing Manager for Fever-Tree Canada. The phrase speaks to the brand’s deeper philosophy, one that prioritizes quality, integrity, and a commitment to elevating the way we drink.
Fever-Tree now offers 16 flavours in Canada alone, from crisp Elderflower Tonic to bold Premium Ginger Beer, sundrenched Sparkling Pink Grapefruit to just-launched cocktail mixers like Classic Caesar, Margarita, and Mojito. Available in elegant bottles and travel-friendly cans, each option is built for bold flavour and effortless hosting. “There truly is a Fever-Tree for everyone,” Green adds.
The new luxury is laid-back but intentional. And nothing captures that more than the ritual of a well-made drink on the dock. It is the soft clink of ice in a glass, the citrus mist of a fresh garnish, and the way conversation slows under a pink sky. Picture it: sun slipping behind the trees, condensation on your glass, the scent of citrus and summer air—what you’re drinking should be just as considered. Fever-Tree understands this rhythm and has become the quiet centrepiece of elevated summer entertaining.
“With Fever-Tree’s wide range of flavours and convenient formats, it fits into any occasion, whether you’re at home, at the cottage, poolside, or hosting an elevated outdoor gathering,” says Green.
Their canned line has become a summer staple. “They’re the perfect size for a single cocktail and ideal for on-the-go enjoyment—picnics, golf carts, BBQs, you name it.”
A purposeful garnish is one of the easiest ways to elevate a drink.
“Garnish should always serve a purpose and elevate the drink, but it is also a great opportunity to have fun and get creative,” Green says. A sprig of lavender in your gin and tonic, or an olive-tomato-feta skewer in your Caesar—these aren’t just aesthetic choices. They add flavour, visual impact, and dimension to the drinking experience.
With Fever-Tree, creating an elevated cocktail takes little more than your preferred spirit and a thoughtful garnish.
For the gin lovers: Elderflower or Mediterranean Tonic.
For tequila: Classic Margarita mix or Sparkling Pink Grapefruit.
For vodka: Classic Caesar mix or Sparkling Sicilian Lemonade.
For rum: Classic Mojito mix with a hit of fresh mint or Premium Ginger Beer.
Going alcohol-free? Try espresso with tonic, pineapple juice with ginger beer, or Sicilian Lemonade with basil. For a quick non-alcoholic cocktail, serve the Classic Caesar mixer over ice as-is, or top the Margarita and Mojito mixers with a splash of club soda for a bright, balanced finish.
Every well-stocked summer bar cart should include three essentials: Elderflower Tonic, Premium Ginger Beer, and Distillers Cola. These cover everything from refreshing G&Ts to bold, nostalgic mixers.
Every Fever-Tree product is made with naturally sourced ingredients. No artificial colours, flavours, or sweeteners. Even the Light line maintains its full flavour while offering a lower-calorie option.
“Premium ingredients are everything,” Green explains. “We are also proudly non-GMO certified.”
Just as important is carbonation. The ultra-fine bubbles in Fever-Tree mixers enhance texture, carry aroma, and create the brand’s smooth, signature finish.
And the quinine? It is still sourced from the bark of the Cinchona tree—once used to treat malaria, and the very plant that gave Fever-Tree its name.
From bottle to cap, Fever-Tree has built sustainability into its process. “Our Five Branches—climate, conservation, communities, circular economy, and colleagues—are how we hold ourselves accountable,” Green says. Their bottles and cans are fully recyclable, and they actively support causes like One Tree Planted and Malaria No More.
Fever-Tree lives beyond the bar, aligning with luxury, design, and culture. Collaborations with DeanDavidson, Umbra, DavidsTea, and Beyond NOA reflect a brand that fits into how people live, not just how they drink. Its presence spans the PGA Golf Tour, Formula 1, the Diageo World Class cocktail finals, and even screen time on shows like The Perfect Couple.
As more people lean into wellness and moderation, Fever-Tree continues to lead. “The no- and low-alcohol space is no longer a trend—it is a lifestyle,” Green notes. The brand has hosted seminars at cocktail festivals to help educate consumers and bartenders alike.
So what should it feel like to crack open a chilled Fever-Tree on a hot summer day?
“Satisfaction and enjoyment,” Green says. “It is about that moment of pure refreshment, where everything feels just right.”
Available at Metro, Loblaws, Sobeys, Amazon, and independent retailers across Canada, Fever-Tree has made the best part of cocktail culture easier to access than ever.
Build the bar cart. Pour with purpose. And host like you mean it.

What sets the work of Tamarack North chief interior designer Kaitlyn Habermehl and the rest of the Tamarack team apart from other top Muskoka design-build firms? Whether born here or drawn by Muskoka’s special magic, all are passionate about the company and the region: you might say Muskoka lakewater runs in their veins.
By Martha Uniacke Breen
In the 35 years since founder Chris Madden launched Tamarack North Ltd., the company has earned a reputation as the gold standard of Muskoka cottage builders. It’s become a crowded field over that time, so what has consistently set Tamarack apart? Well, do a bit of research and you soon uncover a few important facts.
Top of the list: Chris himself, along with many of Tamarack’s now 100-plus em-
ployees, are locals, while others were drawn here by the unique beauty of the region. In fact, Tamarack North is the largest yearround employer in Muskoka, and its roster includes specialists in every aspect of the design and construction business. What’s more, Tamarack is 100% employee-owned; maintaining the company’s excellence is a passion project for each and every member who works there.
Working with Tamarack is designed to be effortless, offering its clients complete turnkey services from the initial design and engineering stages, through the permits and approvals process, and finally through complete management and construction. Tamarack handles every detail and keeps you fully apprised, from the moment the contract is signed to the day when you are handed the keys to your new custom home or cottage.
The same rugged natural topography that has made the region world-famous as a recreation destination has also made it particularly challenging for home construction. On top of that, local zoning and environmental bylaws, designed to protect Muskoka’s natural beauty and pristine ecology, are highly complex; Tamarack has the experience and expertise to work with local authorities to navigate the shoals of the permitting and construction process smoothly.
In 2019, when the company first moved into its spiffy new 6,000-square-foot headquarters in Huntsville, they realized the time had come to add professional in-house design and architecture to the company’s offerings. That’s when principal interior designer Kaitlyn Habermehl was invited to join the company.
“For many years after it was launched, the company didn’t have an in-house design department,” Habermehl explains, “and relied instead on relationships with trusted independent local architects and designers, or professionals our clients brought in.” While those relationships still very much exist “A large part of our work is still with world-renowned architects and interior designers” today, comprehensive architecture and design services have become another way that Tamarack is able to offer a full suite of services to its clientele.
Kaitlyn is a home-town girl herself, born and raised in Huntsville. After earning her interior design degree from Georgian College, she began her career in architectural design, working with a number of prominent builders in the area, before taking the reins at Tamarack’s new design division.
WhEN WE fiRSt StARtED thE DESigN DEpARtMENt, WE hAD NO iDEA hOW quiCkLy it WOuLD gROW. “ “
“When we first started the design department, we had no idea how quickly it would grow,” she recalls. “From just myself at the start, we now have a full-time junior designer and two architectural designers on staff, and we are very busy!”
Habermehl and her team become involved in the process almost from the first moment the contract is signed and sometimes even before that, since some clients opt to research several designers or architects before making a final choice. Tamarack’s design team is fully qualified to provide architectural as well as design and decoration services and can also partner with independent professionals who clients may have engaged separately.
Either way, Kaitlyn and her team’s objective is to get the clearest idea possible of what you want, need, and dream of in your new cottage, and marry it with the unique factors of your property, the views and landscape.
With almost every Tamarack client, she says, the first priority is to make the most of that matchless Muskoka view, which even the most modest waterfront plot usually offers. “This connection to the feeling of the water and the landscape, and bringing the outside in, is always important here,” she observes. This is true whether she’s designing a traditional Muskoka cottage with a gabled roof and clapboard siding, or a sleek, Modernist glass-and-steel temple.
But a cottage, large or small, is about much more than the view, important as that is. How does she get the information she needs to create a signature Tamarack design?
“We start with a questionnaire, which helps me understand exactly what your needs are,” she continues. "Not just the practical aspects, like how many bedrooms and so on, but how you live and how you want to use your cottage. Everyone’s needs are slightly different and, of course, cottag-
ing itself here has changed radically over the years. So our goal is to find out exactly what will suit your family.”
After establishing a detailed picture of the client’s vision, the team goes on to create a layout that provides a basis to begin working from, and fine-tunes it with the client till it’s perfect. Then the process is repeated with elevation drawings. Eventually, plans are drawn up, the needed permits, minor variances, and zoning adjustments are undertaken, and the job gets underway.
“People who cottage in this area crave uniqueness, comfort, and above all, warmth,” Habermehl says.
EvEn if it’s in a transitional or EvEn modErn stylE, thE warmth of thE classic muskoka cottagE nEvEr goEs out of favour. “
Set on beautiful Lake Joseph, this timberframe classic is enjoyed by three generations of the family. The soaring two-storey family room features genuine Douglas fir cladding and trim, windows that open fully on warm days (the lower windows recess into the floor); and the pièce de resistance, a double-height fireplace faced in locally quarried granite with an aged-copper central panel.
Modest in size but not style, the kitchen-dining area of this 1600-sf cottage boasts a roomy island that seats six, plenty of storage, and a furniture-like look. But the built-in eating nook is the real style winner. Designed by Habermehl and the team and fabricated by Whittington & Co., the nook features easycare vegan leather benches and back cushions that literally hang from the wall on custom leather straps.
The conjoined sections of this light-filled Modernist home on Lake of Bays gently follow the site’s lateral slope, from living-dining areas on the right, past a stunning two-storey central atrium and stairwell, to the bedroom wing on the other side for the family’s school-age kids. It’s a great example of how combining a creative response to client needs with sensitivity to the landscape results in a oneof-a-kind masterpiece.
In the Archipelago district of Georgian Bay, strict bylaws governing height and other parameters are designed to preserve the area’s unspoiled beauty and stunning views. These rules only served to spur the creativity of the Tamarack design team, who designed an indoor-outdoor oasis with almost every window oriented towards the waterside view. Outdoor steps made from local granite slabs (quarried by local stonecutters Muskoka Rock Company) lead down to a lower-level rec room tucked into the hill, while the main-floor living area features wraparound windows and deep, cozy eaves.
For over sixty years, the residents of Parry Sound and its surrounding communities have dreamt of a swimming pool. Not a lake those are abundant but an indoor pool. A proper facility. A space where their kids could take lessons, where teens could join swim teams, where older adults could find health and wellness through aquafit or a therapy pool. A space not defined by weather or income. A space to gather.
by DC Rutherford
In 2026, that dream will become a reality.
“Back in 1961, I actually have the minutes from a group of community leaders who said, ‘We need a swimming pool,’” says Ann MacDiarmid, Mayor of Seguin and cochair of the fundraising campaign for the West Parry Sound Recreation and Cultural Centre, which will be called the Tamarack North Center. “We’ve had lake water for-
ever—but never a recreation centre where locals who live here year-round could learn to swim, play basketball, or just come together.”
The Tamarack North Centre will be the largest capital project the region has seen in decades. It represents a true partnership across seven municipalities, two First Nations, and multiple levels of government.
The centre is more than a rec facility—it’s a place for people of all ages to gather, “ “
The $32.5 million price tag was initially covered through $23.3 million in federal and provincial infrastructure funding, with the remaining balance shared between the municipalities and fundraising efforts— Parry Sound and Seguin carrying the lion’s share.
But, as with any dream, reality brought challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic dis-
rupted timelines and inflated costs. As the community became more invested in the project, its diversity of needs became more apparent.
“We were building a four-lane pool,” says MacDiarmid, “but people wrote in, saying, ‘Wait a minute. That’s not enough. Our kids can’t compete with just four lanes.’” Responding to that call, the plan was upgraded to a six-lane pool, adding to the cost, but en-
suring the facility could meet regional needs long into the future.
So now, in addition to the $23.3 million already committed from the federal and provincial governments and $9.2 million coming from the municipalities, another $7 million needs to be raised privately. “We know, based on our population density, this centre won’t operate at a profit. But that’s not the point,” MacDiarmid says. “It’s a community resource, and we need to support it accordingly.”
For some, the idea of a public pool in the centre of Canada’s most prominent lake community may seem unwarranted. As MacDiarmid acknowledges, “They say to me, ‘I don’t need a pool. I’ve got one at the end of my dock.’ And I say, ‘But who built your dock? Who plows your road in the winter? Whose kids look after your property, serve you in restaurants, work at the hospital?’” In a region surrounded by lakes and waterways, knowing how to swim isn’t just a recreational skill—it’s a matter of safety. Whether it’s kids helping out on island properties or families spending time by the water, the ability to confidently navigate those environments can be life-saving. Water safety is essential here, not just for fun, but for peace of mind.
That gentle reminder is powerful. The centre isn’t being built for tourists, or just for locals, it’s being built for the community that sustains the region, the people who make cottage country possible.
And the vision goes beyond the pool. The facility includes a regulation-sized gymnasium, a walking track, fitness centre, therapy pool, and multi-purpose rooms that can be used for everything from yoga to crochet groups to cultural events.
“The centre is more than a rec facility—it’s a place for people of all ages to gather,” says MacDiarmid. “You’ll see moms meet while their kids are in swim lessons and decide to start a yoga group. Or seniors forming a swim team. That’s community.”
That sense of belonging is especially important as the region builds connections between the locals and the summer residents. “We’re all one community. And during COVID, we saw that. Some seasonal residents stepped up and wrote huge cheques to support our hospitals. They realized they’re part of this place too.”
Now, she hopes that the spirit of shared responsibility will carry over to the rec centre’s fundraising. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to contribute to a lasting legacy,” she says. “There aren’t many places where you can make a donation and see your name, or your lake’s name, on a facility that will serve generations.”
The Tamarack North Centre is named for the design-build firm Tamarack North Ltd., which chose to support the project as an investment in the health and wellbeing of its community. Some families have quietly given $100,000 or more with no interest in naming rights, jus the satisfaction of helping bring a long-needed project to life. Naming rights continue to be available for the pool, gymnasium, and fitness centre, but donations of any size are welcome.
The multi-purpose rooms will provide an ideal setting for events, classes, and gatherings that foster cross-cultural connections. “If a group of women wants to quilt, or a First Nation wants to create a healing space, they’ll be welcome,” she says.
Architecturally, the structure makes a contemporary statement, with expansive glass and clean lines that reflect the modern role it’s expected to play. “It’s not traditional,” MacDiarmid concedes. “But it’s beautiful. The pool will be visible from the street. It’s designed to be inviting.”
Ultimately, the centre fills a profound gap in the social fabric of the region, a “third space,” to borrow the term used in urban design. Neither home nor work, but somewhere in between. A place for people to gather, talk, move, and share. Something we’ve lost too much of in a digital, post-pandemic world.
“We don’t see each other as much anymore,” MacDiarmid says. “Even meetings are on Zoom. We’ve lost that casual coffee before a meeting, or the chat in the stands at a basketball game. This centre brings that back.”
The footprint is clear. The opening is scheduled for 2026. All that’s left is to finish the fundraising and fulfill the promise that began more than six decades ago. And it’s a rare opportunity to give back in a way that’s as practical as it is profound.
“This is a chance to be part of something that changes lives,” says MacDiarmid. “You can build a legacy, not just a dock.”
The Tamarack North Centre is located at 44 Joseph Street, Parry Sound. For more information and to donate, visit www.letsmakeasplash.ca The project is also on Facebook @West Parry Sound Recreation and Cultural Centre and Instagram @wpspool.

What if a garden could do more than soothe the senses—what if it could lower blood pressure, quiet the mind, and invite a deeper, slower breath? This is the guiding vision behind Virginia Burt Designs, a landscape architecture firm based in a landscape architecture firm based in Ontario. VBD is devoted to crafting spaces that heal, comfort, and connect.
Since 1996, Virginia Burt Designs has been cultivating landscapes that engage the mind, body, and spirit within the deep experience of the natural environment. They understand that nature possesses an inherent ability to transform, restore, and to realign. Landscapes and gardens, both large and small, urban or rural, remote or downtown, can act in improving our health. At VBD they are passionate about creating spaces where people, art, and nature intersect.
VBD’s approach is one of deep intention. Across all projects, every plant, path, and stone are placed with care, blending research, artistry, and a profound love for the land. The garden is not merely a collection of elements, rather it is a space where presence is felt, where movement slows, and where time is shaped by the rhythm of nature itself.
What often connects one space to another is hardscaping: rock and stone. They evoke a profound response, inspiring exploration that spans geology, history, mysticism, religion, folklore, poetry, and art, with occasional diversions into quantum physics, biology, cognitive science, and, ultimately, philosophy and spirituality. Each discipline reframes reality, offering new perspectives and deepening understanding. It is in this interplay of ideas that the significance of stone emerges.
Mircea Eliade observed, “By manifesting the sacred, any object becomes some-
thing else yet continues to remain itself…. A sacred stone remains a stone; apparently (or, more precisely, from the profane point of view), nothing distinguishes it from all other stones”. This perspective shapes the approach to stone—not merely as material, but as a presence, a manifestation of something beyond itself.
Stone exists at a different energetic scale from human life, moving with a stillness that commands attention. Its weight, endurance, and permanence—sometimes even its fragility—speak in ways that are intuitively understood. The placement of rock requires an awareness beyond functionality or aesthetics; it must acknowledge the deeper spiritual connection that stone holds. Intention is central to this process, ensuring that each placement fosters a renewed connection with nature, reawakens
intuition, and attunes the mind to what Eliade called the “harmonies of the cosmos.”
Through intention, the right stones find their place. A deliberate placement invites engagement, encouraging observers to listen to the unspoken signals that stone emits. This interaction initiates a connection not only to nature but also within those who encounter the stone.
Too often, stones are placed with indifference, merely serving as barriers against vehicular access. These scattered formations resemble fallen meteorites; their potential unrealized. Rather than invoking beauty, surprise, or delight, they stand as melancholic obstructions, disconnected from any deeper purpose.
Stone binds itself to human experience through stories, thoughts, and memories.
Each rock carries a geological narrative record of ancient transformations. Some have been sculpted by glaciers, others forged by the upheaval of the earth’s crust, while still others formed through the slow compression of sediment over eons.
The layers of meaning attached to stone go beyond its physical history, extending into human engagement. A weathered limestone boulder, placed with intention, can become more than a simple element of design; it can serve as an anchor, an altar of sorts. Over time, people imbue such stones with significance, returning to them for reflection, release, and illumination. In this way, stone becomes a vessel of connection, linking individuals to place, memory, and the quiet rhythms of nature.
This is the power of stone when placed with intention. It links individuals to one another, to the past, the present, and the future. It transforms space, fostering interaction, remembrance, and personal discovery.
The placement of stone is not simply a design choice—it is an act of reverence.

For over 40 years, McNabb Furniture has shaped how families furnish their homes and cottages across Parry Sound and Muskoka. What began as a small family operation has grown into a destination recognized for its design expertise, thoughtful service, and deep connection to the community. Now under the leadership of brothers Byron and Liam McNabb, the second generation is building on their father and mother’s legacy: honouring their roots, elevating the client experience, and delivering a process that feels personal at every step.
McNabb Furniture operates with a standard few can match. Each project is handled with precision and depth, combining practical experience with a sharp design sensibility. The team is well-versed in guiding clients through layout, proportion, finishes, and materials, ensuring every space feels cohesive and intentional. Staff undergo formal design training, a reflection of the company’s investment in both craft and client care. Whether furnishing a cozy cottage room or a custom home, the process is hands-on, collaborative, and designed to reflect how clients actually live.
Step into the McNabb showroom, and it becomes clear why so many clients return. Every display is designed to spark ideas. Fully built-out kitchens, styled seating areas, and premium appliances are presented in real, livable settings. “We want people to feel like they’re walking into a home, not a store,” says Byron McNabb, co-owner. “The goal is to help them picture how it will actually function, not just how it looks on a showroom floor.”
That same level of care now extends well beyond the walls of the store. In response to the evolving needs of their clientele, McNabb has introduced in-home consultations and on-site measurements, offering clients a more tailored, accessible way to bring their spaces to life. Whether collaborating on a full design remotely or guiding a client in person, the approach remains thoughtful and seamless. Delivery, setup, and removal are handled entirely in-house, ensuring a consistent, professional experience from start to finish. “It shouldn’t feel complicated,” Liam McNabb, co-owner, notes. “We’re here to make it easier, not harder.”
Product selection at McNabb reflects a philosophy rooted in longevity and ease. Neutral palettes taupes, whites, soft blues remain favourites in lakefront homes and seasonal spaces. Rolled-arm sectionals, tailored slipcovers, and performance fabrics like Crypton continue to lead in popularity for their comfort, versatility, and durability. “Our clients want pieces that last,” says Byron. “They’re thinking about how it’s going to hold up over years of family dinners, sandy feet, and late nights at the lake.”
“They’re thinking about how it’s going to hold up over years of family dinners, sandy feet, and late nights at the lake.”
Outdoor living has become an increasingly important part of the conversation. As three- and four-season spaces evolve, clients are investing in furniture that extends the comfort of the indoors. McNabb’s curated collection from Sunset West captures this shift with a clean, California-inspired aesthetic built to thrive in Muskoka’s climate. “It’s outdoor furniture that looks like it belongs inside. That’s the level we’re aiming for,” Byron explains.
Today, the McNabb team serves a wide range of clients, from local families and seasonal residents to those furnishing custom builds across Ontario. Many discover the store through word of mouth or return after years of working with the family. The experience remains consistent: approachable, polished, and grounded in trust. “We want people to feel like they’ve been taken care of,” Liam says. “That’s something my dad always made sure of, and it’s something we take seriously.”
With over four decades of steady growth, McNabb Furniture has earned the trust of generations. Their reputation has been built client by client through consistency, care, and an approach that favours clarity, quality, and lasting value. The spaces they help create aren’t just beautiful, they’re built to work, to last, and to feel unmistakably personal.
Whether you’re furnishing a single space or sourcing pieces for an entire home, McNabb offers a thoughtful, personalized approach from start to finish. Their newly updated website allows clients to browse inventory online and begin the process from anywhere, with the same level of care they’ve come to expect in-store.

I received some great feedback from the readers of last year’s article titled “5 Tips for Staying Fit While You Travel,” so I’ve authored this article as a direct follow-up. As a Physiotherapist and Personal Trainer for executives, business owners, unique solo athletes, and others with high mobility lifestyles, I offer 5 MORE Tips to Stay Fit While You Travel for cottaging, business, or pleasure.
1
You already use your calendar to keep your social and professional life on track; leverage it in the same way to stay fit while you travel. For many of my clients, I recommend scheduling movement breaks daily or as often as your schedule allows. In my experience working with busy GTA executives and business owners, 15 minutes seems to be the ideal length for a quick post-meal walk or stretch break before you head out with the family for a drive to the cottage or an afternoon of meetings on a business trip.
If you really want to power up your movement breaks, try adding in an online “follow along” exercise video to add some rigor to the process. There are thousands of hours of free content online that can be leveraged with or without a web connection, giving you less friction to getting movement in and investing in yourself no matter where life finds you.
As an example: while on a business trip with a full afternoon ahead of you, your calendar reminds you to go for a 15-minute walk, scheduled daily after lunch. After finishing your meal, start a timer on your smartphone and a “follow along” interval-style walking workout on YouTube to go around the block with. Combinations like these are limitless, so use your imagination and leverage your tech to create opportunities to move!
My clients are HIGHLY motivated when they can see their progress towards a fitness, strength, or sports injury rehab goal with their own eyes. Objectifying your results is a great catalyst for this process and can take the form of strength or range of motion metrics, pant/dress size changes, or the less tangible but equally meaningful compliments from friends/family/loved ones.
At Summit Performance, as strength and conditioning specialists and physiotherapists, we leverage the latest tech, tools, and equipment so our clients get the benefit of objective measurement tied to their training or rehab program. They can see the results for themselves as they train and progress towards goals meaningful to them. We monitor and re-measure against our baseline performance results as we as we progress; you are held accountable for your training and effort, and we are held accountable for your progress!
In my experience, when coupled with consistent follow-up communication from your Physio or Trainer, making your goals tangible and objective keeps you motivated and less likely to make choices in the moment that are counterproductive to your health and fitness goals, whether life finds you close to home or traversing the globe.
3
One of my favourite parts of being a physiotherapist is the recurring reminder that people exercise more when that movement is meaningful to their lives. Whether it's an executive who has spent 40 years playing tennis, the martial artists I’m working with in Japan, or a high school student rehabbing after a concussion, people are ALWAYS more inclined to exercise when they can see that the movements integrated into their personal training or injury rehab routine directly translate into the sports and activities they care about most.
For some people that means working with a personal trainer to help you create an exercise program that aligns with movements from your favourite sport or activity, and for others it means being involved in exercise done in a group setting where they can socialize/connect with other like-minded people. Define your activity, sport, or setting that’s meaningful to you and get into the groove with a program you will be motivated to complete consistently. This will keep you fit and motivated for the rest of your life, no matter the setting, no matter the place, no matter the circumstance.

USE “STERILE COCKPIT” MODE TO LIMIT DISTRACTIONS
I have immediate family members that spent their career in the aviation industry. This meant that I grew up using the lingo of planes, airports, and everything in between
in my daily life. One of my favourite concepts from the aviation industry is the sterile cockpit, in which only tools necessary to the function of an aircraft are permitted in the cabin. This limits distractions in the most crucial and risk prone times during a flight, takeoff, and landing.
I create my own “sterile cockpit” mode as soon as I start my own daily fitness training. This means my phone goes on airplane mode (ironic yes!) and the endless buzzing of emails and messages goes away temporarily. This keeps me in a flow state, focused on my mission for the 45-60 minutes of daily “me” time. Allow yourself the space for a truly distraction-free window while you travel and watch the benefits accrue by making this a non negotiable habit for your daily exercise/training time.
5
This is one of those “not so secret” hacks people latch onto for being easy to implement with huge benefits for what seems like a negligible amount of effort.
In your daily cottage routine of errands, housework, managing your social life, etc., there are endless opportunities to add a bit of exercise to the mundane aspects of your day. This can be as easy as intentionally parking in a further spot when you run errands, maintaining a few feet of your cottage property even if you have someone to take care of the bulk of the work at a later date, or the cleaning/re-organizing necessary to keep your cottage in check.
People underestimate how quickly this can add up, but an extra 15 minutes walking for your errands, combined with 45 minutes split between cleaning and cottage maintenance QUICKLY turns into time spent “exercising” on top of any dedicated fitness/personal training efforts you’re implementing to keep yourself as healthy as possible.
Once habitual, these “little wins” not only feel good in the short term by voluntarily choosing to clean up or improve a little part of your life, but the sense of control and unconscious effort, once routinized, will pay off again and again in the form of “compound interest” without seemingly any additional effort on your end to keep the habit going!

Imagine a place where your morning begins with a view so wide, it feels as though the horizon was drawn just for you. A place where wellness isn’t a scheduled activity, but a way of life. Where every texture, every breeze, every sunrise is curated to elevate your senses. That’s the essence of this extraordinary island retreat tucked into the untouched wilds of Virgin Gorda.
Set across 400 ocean-wrapped acres, the secluded sanctuary of Virgin Gorda is more than a resort; it’s a lifestyle ecosystem, designed with equal reverence for luxury and the land. Half the acreage has been preserved as green space, an intentional move that gives nature, and those seeking refuge within it, room to breathe. The result? A place where stillness and sophistication go hand in hand.
At the heart of the community’s newest chapter is Sundara Spa + Studio, a one-of-a-kind wellness destination suspended over the sea. Glass walls slide open to fully immerse you in panoramic views and gentle Caribbean breezes, while at your feet, underwater “floor windows” connect each treatment room to the living reef below. The spa’s commitment to sustainability is matched only by its sense of serenity: every ritual is elevated by VOYA’s organic seaweed-based skincare, drawn from the ocean itself. Nearby, the open-concept wellness studio offers sunrise yoga, Pilates, sound baths, and meditation in a space designed to dissolve boundaries between body, breath, and sea.
But the experience doesn’t stop there. Meander from the spa to the beach club, where three sculpted pools and a swim-up bar invite long, languid afternoons. Or head to the marina village for a coffee, boutique browsing, or sunset cocktails. Prefer adventure? Set off paddleboarding right from the steps of your private villa, explore vibrant coral reefs, or hop aboard the Odyssey transfer boat for a seamless journey to Beef Island. A state-of-the-art trail network for electric golf carts makes every inch of the island accessible, while still maintaining its tranquil seclusion.
Families will find joy in the island’s playful side: a kids’ club, rescue barn, and interactive nature centre promise wonder at every turn. And for those seeking connection, there’s no shortage of community: social events, shared meals, and the easy camaraderie of island life await you.
This isn’t just a place to visit. It’s a place to belong and now, for a fortunate few, a place to call home.

AN EXCLUSIVE GATED COMMUNITY ON LAKE ERIE IS NOW SELLING
Something extraordinary is happening on the shores of Lake Erie.
Just minutes from Port Colborne—and within reach of Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, and the GTA—a private, gated beachfront community is quietly taking shape. Introducing Lakewood Beach: a rare
opportunity to own freehold beachfront property along an uninterrupted stretch of sandy shoreline. And now, it’s officially selling.
With six lots already sold and eight more under reservation (as of May 2025), early buyers are securing their place in what’s quickly becoming one of Ontario’s most talked-about waterfront developments. Unlike the rocky or marshy edges that line much of the Great Lakes, Lakewood Beach offers over 600 metres of uninterrupted, walkable sand. It’s the kind of shoreline
where morning coffee is enjoyed with your toes in the surf—and where generations of family memories are meant to unfold.
“There’s no overselling required when it comes to beachfront,” says Donna Gray, Broker and Managing Partner at Cayman Marshall International Realty Inc, Brokerage (Oakville Office), the exclusive brokerage representing the development. “People understand how rare it is to find freehold land with soft sand underfoot, gated access, and without the hassle of driving two, three, or even four hours to get there. This is
a rare combination—and people are moving quickly.”
Located less than 90 minutes from Oakville and just over an hour from both Hamilton and the Niagara region, Lakewood Beach appeals to families seeking a unique retreat—without sacrificing accessibility.
The community is made up of just 41 lots—33 directly on the beach, and 8 with waterviews. Each lot ranges in size to accommodate homes between 2,800 and 4,400 square feet, all carefully posi-
tioned to maximize views, privacy, and long-term value. Prices begin in the high $900,000s—a compelling opportunity given the scarcity of true beachfront property in Ontario.
“This is for people who want to create something timeless,” says Natalie Costello, Sales Representative and Managing Partner at Cayman Marshall International Realty Inc., Brokerage (Oakville Office). “For some, it’s a summer home. For others, it’s a full-time retreat. And for many, it’s about building something their children and grandchildren will one day inherit.”
While most buyers are planning custom builds, the development team is also exploring the release of up to eight turn-key beachfront homes through a reputable builder. If finalized, these pre-construction residences could become available as early as Summer 2025, offering a streamlined path to ownership for those who prefer a move-in-ready option. Pricing is anticipated to start in the low-to-mid $2 million range, with all homes designed to meet the same high architectural standards that define the community.
Lakewood Beach was designed to feel private, secure, and effortless. Homeowners enjoy full freehold ownership paired with the ease of professionally managed amenities. Private roads, shared green spaces, and beach areas are maintained year-round— ensuring residents enjoy the lifestyle they came for, without the upkeep they didn’t.
Architectural guidelines protect the visual character and value of the community,
ensuring a consistent and elevated streetscape—even as each home remains fully custom. Buyers also have access to a trusted list of builders familiar with the site and its design framework.
From the layout of the lots to the preservation of natural green space, every element of Lakewood Beach has been thoughtfully curated. This isn’t just a development—it’s a community built to last.
High-income families, especially in the GTA, are rethinking how they invest in real estate. Many are moving beyond seasonal cottages three or four hours away in favour of properties that offer year-round access, deeper personal connection, and longterm enjoyment.
Lake Erie is emerging as one of Ontario’s smartest waterfront investments. It offers fewer crowds than Muskoka or Prince Edward County, yet is surrounded by estab-
lished towns like Port Colborne and Fort Erie. The region also boasts easy access to Niagara’s wineries, marinas, and golf courses, and it is just 20–30 minutes from U.S. border crossings and 60–90 minutes from major international airports.
And while other waterfront areas have become overdeveloped or suffer from poor water quality, Lakewood Beach has protected what matters most: privacy, walkability, clean sand, and open lake views.
The appeal of Lakewood Beach spans generations. Some buyers are building large family homes for year-round living. Others are creating seasonal retreats to be passed down over time. What unites them is a shared appreciation for space, setting, and permanence.
“There’s something powerful about watching your kids run barefoot on the same beach you grew up coming to,” Natalie adds. “These are the kinds of places where family history begins. They’re not buying for one season—they’re buying for decades.”
Unlike properties tied up in co-ownership models or limited by seasonal access, Lakewood Beach offers the freedom of true ownership. Build what you want. Use it when you want. And know it’s yours—now and into the future.
With inventory tightening and word spreading, Lakewood Beach won’t stay a secret for long. And with fewer than 35 estate lots now remaining, this is a limited opportunity to own in a beachfront community unlike anything else in the province.
Whether you’re building your family’s summer retreat, downsizing from city life, or investing in a property that offers both emotional and financial return, Lakewood Beach offers something lasting—without compromise.

Raised with a successful broker father, real estate is in TJ's blood, but his passion lies in artistry. TJ is excited to bring his vision and expertise to the Cayman Marshall team.

By Todd Adair, President, Cayman Marshall International Realty
Since March, our luxury rental division has seen a remarkable uptick—driven largely by expat Canadians and, perhaps more surprisingly, American visitors booking summer vacations in Muskoka. We haven’t experienced this level of interest from the U.S. market since the height of the pandemic.
Political turbulence south of the border appears to be a driving factor. Increasingly, Muskoka is being viewed not just as a picturesque retreat, but as a sanctuary—an investment in both lifestyle and long-term stability.
In response, we’ve begun surveying these international guests. The results are striking: more than half indicated they would consider buying here and plan to speak with one of our agents this summer. That signals a powerful, perhaps untapped, opportunity in a real estate landscape where many other markets across Canada are flatlining. Muskoka, meanwhile, is not just holding its own—it’s thriving.
Over my 14 years building Cayman Marshall, I’ve heard countless objections from buyers comparing Muskoka to falling markets elsewhere. But time and again, our region has shown resilience—and right now, it’s surging. This is not a bubble; it’s a shift in demand.
Toronto, too, is evolving. More clients are choosing to invest meaningfully in Muskoka while scaling back in the GTA. That alone tells you something: what we have here is rare, valuable, and increasingly sought-after.
Muskoka isn’t just enduring. It’s becoming indispensable.
