CONCEPT:

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

The focus is on magnetic waves that connect the two generations: the elderly and children. The central great room space is the main force that draws people to it by magnetic fields created by people in motion.

• bridge the gap between two generations through active engagement throughout center • apply prinicipals of universal design; consider needs and disabilities of children and seniors • comply with ADA standards • creatively design to accommodate low budget and sustainability • use of mezzanine to strategically cap enclosed spaces • consider acoustics in various spaces • creation of a central core interactive space: great room

GIVEN PLAN/ELEVATION

• children and seniors have physiological, psychological, and social needs (instinctive and emotions); also have limitations • anthropometrics and ergonomics help accommodate users of a space • textures, materials, light, and color can affect thought processes • low vision problems are prevalent among senior citizens • historic warehouse facility chosen to be local community mentor center • site is in a low income inner city neighborhood and serves vulnerable populations - youth (5-12), senior citizens (55+) racial/ethnic minorities, and immigrants • senior citizens have experience, love, and time to offer to children
