PORTFOLIO

Hello, my name is Kezang Dorji, and I am a fourth-year Architecture student at the New York City College of Technology, currently pursuing my Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree.

My passion for architecture began in childhood, inspired by my grandfather’s house-building projects in Bhutan, which I was fortunate to witness firsthand. This early exposure sparked my fascination with the art of design and construction. Over the years, my love for art and design grew, motivating me to explore how creative ideas can shape spaces and enhance people’s lives.

PUBLIC CULTURE PARK

This project explores the significance of public and multi-family housing in the context of urban redevelopment. Through research, analysis, and innovative design strategies, it aims to address the challenges of housing accessibility, sustainability, and community integration for immigrant families in New York City.

The final design proposes a high-density, mixed-use development that fosters a sense of belonging and social connection. It integrates affordable housing, public spaces, and essential community amenities, creating a dynamic urban environment that supports diverse cultural and economic activities.

MUSEUM OF BHUTAN

This project explores the significance of “A Museum of Culture”, focusing on architectural design, cultural representation, and visitor engagement. It integrates research, schematic design, and spatial planning to create a dynamic destination that reflects a specific cultural identity or theme.

The process includes initial research and analysis, program development, flow diagrams, schematic design, and massing studies, the development of schematic 3D models, plans and sections, through final presentation.

GREEN HARBOR COMMUNITY CENTER

This project focuses on the adaptive reuse of buildings, emphasizing the redesign and expansion of existing structures to enhance their functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic value. It involves an in-depth process of research, documentation, and redesign, guiding students through each phase from the initial concept to the final stages of design development.

Key aspects of the project include the careful integration of structural elements, lighting design, selection of appropriate interior materials and finishes, space programming, and thoughtful furniture layout. Special attention is given to balancing historical preservation with modern upgrades, ensuring that existing structures are transformed into dynamic, efficient, and visually appealing spaces while maintaining their original integrity where applicable.

ARCHITECTURE OFFICE BUILDING 04

This course is the final part of a four-course sequence designed to deepen students’ understanding of architectural design and construction. Using digital technologies, students explore the mechanics of building enclosures and structures, gaining hands-on experience in developing a comprehensive set of working drawings. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on the communication and collaboration skills essential for success in a professional architectural office environment. These skills are vital for working in multidisciplinary teams and interacting with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.

For this project, the objective was to design an office building of our choosing, incorporating a specific functional program. I decided to design an architectural office building with a mall located on the ground floor. This mixed-use concept aimed to integrate the professional workspace with a public-facing retail space, creating a dynamic and functional building.

THE REBIRTH OF FLATIRON

This advanced design course addresses a wide range of urban and architectural design issues, with a strong focus on the cultural aspects involved in the development of cities. Building upon previous studio and lecture coursework, the class ties together key topics such as urban planning, architectural design, environmental sustainability, urban infrastructure, and historic preservation.

The project at hand centers around an urban renewal and redevelopment initiative for the Flatiron District. This involves revitalizing the area through thoughtful design strategies that consider the district’s historical context, its role within the broader city fabric, and sustainable development practices. The goal is to create a vibrant, well-integrated space that blends modern architectural solutions with the unique character of the neighborhood.
