ANNUAL BENEFIT FOR KIDS APRIL 2018

DREAM TO SOAR We’ve all heard stories about the great idea that began as a sketch on a paper napkin. A flash of inspiration is captured with a few quick marks. Then the hard works starts. The idea is nurtured with plans and iterations and feedback until it finally takes off. This is creativity at its most fundamental. This is why creative youth development is more than just enrichment or one small piece of a well-rounded education. Creativity is foundational to moving us forward. In order to reach your dreams, you first have to have a dream. Art-making is not only the method we use to encourage dreams but the medium through which we teach real-life skills that allow young people to advocate for themselves, remain resilient in the face of adversity, and make positive contributions to their communities. We’re proud to be able to be a part of the lives of our kids as they dream, discover, and, most of all, soar.

OUR WORK 6

Brian Ricklin Executive Director and CEO

The challenges of tomorrow will not be the same as the challenges of today. Tomorrow requires vision, daring, and the ability to look at issues from multiple perspectives. Tomorrow needs today’s dreamers, new discoveries, and young people with tools and willingness to soar. We are all creative! Over the last year, we, our teaching artists, management staff, board of directors, and community partners, have sat down on multiple occasions to engage in challenging conversations about some of the broader issues that impact our young people and the communities in which they live. We are tackling subjects that range from best practices in teaching to issues of racial identity. And we’ve made a concerted effort to use the lessons we have gleaned from these conversations to inform how we teach, what we teach, and the kinds of communities we want to foster in our classrooms and at our worksites. All of our art education and youth development work, directly or indirectly, addresses the critical need to equip all young people with the skills, courage, and motivation to become successful and resilient adults. Reading, writing, and proficiency in mathematics, are, of course, essential skills for any adult, but creative skills are, in my opinion, foundational to a well-rounded and meaningful education. Creativity is the essence of problem-solving, and the essence of seeing beauty, and meaning in juxtaposition, harmony and contrast. Creativity is what enables a person to envision something that does not exist and make that thing a reality. Creativity is essential for change. Just as one cannot build a skyscraper without a solid foundation, we cannot prepare young people, let alone ourselves, to face the challenges of tomorrow without a foundation in creative thinking. All of us in the Creative Art Works family, especially tonight’s Host Committee and generous supporters, are invested in creative youth development and our common vision for all young New Yorkers. Thank you for joining us in building a better tomorrow. With sincere thanks,

WHO WE ARE Brian Ricklin, Executive Director and CEO “I’m inspired by our kids and their art, their fresh perspective, their resiliency, and their remarkable capacity to learn and grow. Our kids’ art is relevant and powerful; it has brought me so much joy, and even beautiful tears. Helping kids to create is what motivates me. It makes my job meaningful.”

Karen Jolicoeur, Deputy Director | Director of Development “As a young performing artist, I learned to risk vulnerability in a process that requires deep digging, discovery, and collaboration. My work in the arts has changed the way I move through the world, the trajectory of my life, and the people in it. When an audience member shares that they, too, have been brought to a new place, the power of art to move and connect us becomes visceral.”

Scott Lucas, Marketing & Communications Manager “Once at a poetry slam, I had several people tell me how much they liked a poem I wrote. Each person had their own wildly different interpretation of that poem; and yet I somehow managed to make a connection. That was such a liberating discovery.”

Jill Goldstein, Office Manager “As a social worker working in homeless shelters, I saw the impact that art has on kids. Some days it was just for fun – other days, it was the only way they could express the myriad challenges in their lives. Whether or not they were verbal, or had diminished capacity, whatever the circumstances of their lives, art was an outlet. Art matters.”

12

Daniel Bergman, Program Director “Viewing art has invited me to engage with the minds, hands, and hearts of countless others. Making art has given me opportunities to speak my own truths and dream of the day they might echo across space and time and engage some other viewer in a moment that soars.”

Lance Paladino, Program Manager “Visual art, music and all other disciplines allow me to exist in the world of ideas and their expressions. This relationship continually deepens my appreciation for life, beauty, and how people express themselves.”

Ashli Sisk, Program Manager - Operations “When painting, I resolve problems and accidents using materials and content. I make rules about color and form while tackling their histories and conventions in a multitude of contexts. I use this experience to traverse my whole life, to understand problems and accidents as opportunities and ultimately, meaning.” Stefanie Lewin, Program Coordinator “The arts have given me so much. Making art has helped me develop confidence, bravery, creativity, tenacity, and trust. Learning about other artists and their work has allowed me to discover new insights and worldviews. Teaching art has been an opportunity to help children discover all of these same powerful ideas and feelings.”

Wendy Realmuto, Development Associate “My music career has been a path of self-discovery that took me from my small town in North Carolina to opera and concert stages across the U.S. and Europe. The arts have taught me to work hard and enjoy collaborating with others. The arts perfectly transcend language and cultures. It’s been the joy of my life.” 13

Ritchie Torres Council Member, District 15 New York City Council

Dear Friends, Thank you for joining me in celebrating the incredible work that Creative Art Works has done this year! As public funding for art programs has significantly lowered over the years, CAW continues to offer a variety of programs that directly benefit New York’s often underserved communities. I am proud to lend my support and congratulations to both Creative Art Works and the honorees of tonight’s gala: David Cheikin, Brookfield Properties, and Felipe Franco. CAW empowers thousands of young people every year by creating a complex connection between the arts, the community, and themselves. The programs that CAW offers help youth all over the city to excel both inside and outside of the classroom by allowing them to be better engaged in their education and to develop the skills they need to be successful in the future. Through their creative endeavors, CAW helps these children to find their voice and shows them that they have the power to make a change both in their community and their own lives. David Cheiken and Brookfield Properties are working to bridge the gap between art and business and incidentally are creating a brighter future for our city by helping CAW to inspire confidence within the youth of every borough. Felipe Franco, the Deputy Commissioner of NYC Administration for Children’s Services has dedicated over fifteen years to improving the lives of all young people of New York City. I would once again like to thank and congratulate the Creative Art Works and tonight’s honorees for all they have done to invest in the success of our youth by allowing them to experience the arts in a way that creates a brighter future for both them and the city as a whole. Sincerely,

DISCOVERY IN ACTION – PSA PROGRAM AT BRONX MS45 Students in a CAW after-school program at MS45 in The Bronx created Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) about the health risks of consuming sugary snacks and beverages. These interdisciplinary projects challenged young artists to develop a range of academic, artistic, technical, and social skills. Under the guidance of an CAW Teaching Artist, students worked with professional-quality cameras and software to produce posters and videos that used testimonials, humor and statistics to urge viewers to change their eating and drinking habits. “When I saw the video editing program for the first time, it was confusing. There were so many buttons and so many screens... I thought, "Oh, my God! What to do?" But now it’s just easy and fun!” – Yadira Ramos, Grade 6. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural After-School Adventures (CASA) Initiative in partnership with the City Council and Council Member Ritchie Torres. Watch the MS45 video PSA’s at vimeo.com/channels/MS45PSAs.

EVERYONE HAS A STORY TO TELL The Creative Art Works Multimedia Team is in a unique position. These young people are charged with telling the authentic stories that emerge from our Public Art Youth Employment Program and to observe and interpret what develops from the interplay of art-making, youth employment, and community engagement. But the Multimedia Team is a CAW employment program in its own right, and our videographers have a lot to say. Here are some of their technical tips, aesthetic insights, and even a few transcendent revelations, in their own words.

“Throughout the process of making our film, one of the most important things I learned was the value of friendship – of always having someone there who could push you to the next level even when I wasn’t completely ready to do it. So, I want to say thanks to my team.” — Carlos Ramirez Multimedia Apprentice

“My favorite part was interviewing and getting to know all the muralists, and it was such an amazing experience to get to interview New York Family Court Judge Lupoloff.” — Lucy Brewster Multimedia Apprentice

“I’ve created short films before as a one-man show, but here I was part of a team that needed me and I needed them. These guys have helped me out in so many ways, and they’re amazing. I also want to thank our TA’s, Nick, Miah, Tiana, and Paul – without them, oh my god, we wouldn’t be anywhere!” — Jason Uzhca, Imagine Multimedia Apprentice 18

ONE THING I LEARNED FROM WORKING WITH THE MULTIMEDIA TEAM IS THAT EVERYONE HAS A STORY TO TELL AND THAT IT’S UP TO US TO SHOW THAT STORY.” Fig. 1 – Christopher's drawing made shortly after an argument – gray represents sadness, red represents anger, and yellow represents confusion.

Honoring David Cheikin Brookfield Properties Felipe Franco Deputy Commissioner NYC Administration for Children’s Services 21

OUR HONOREE David Cheikin

David Cheikin is a longstanding supporter of Creative Art Works who has been committed to making a difference in the lives of young people for over fifteen years. As the Head of the New York region for Brookfield Properties, David was responsible for the performance and strategic positioning of Brookfield’s twenty million square feet of office and retail space and seven million square feet of development. David led the 2015 transformation of what was the World Financial Center into the nowwidely celebrated Brookfield Place, including the total repositioning of the retail component and re-letting of 4.5 million square feet of office space. Today, the multibillion dollar Brookfield Place complex has become broadly acknowledged as the premier luxury shopping district and culinary destination in Lower Manhattan. More recently, David’s portfolio included Manhattan West, Brookfield’s eight-acre, sixbuilding mixed-use development on the West side of Manhattan in the Hudson Yards District. When complete, the site will feature nearly six million square feet of Class-A office space, luxury residences, a boutique hotel and a vibrant urban landscape with landscaped gardens and dynamic street-front retail that will bring together high-end, experiential shops and innovative culinary concepts. David joined Brookfield in 2002 and went on to become their youngest vice president in the New York office at age 30. Prior to that, David was with Jones Lang LaSalle in its New York office. David sits on the boards of Friends of Hudson River Park, Downtown Lower Manhattan Association (DLMA), and Bryant Park Management Corporation. David holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Washington University and a Bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Rochester. David and his wife Raina’s commitment to volunteering began in 2003 through the Big Brothers Big Sister Corporate Program. Raina eventually went on to work for the Bloomberg administration to help establish NYC Service, the Mayor’s Office outreach program to help promote volunteering throughout the five boroughs. David and Raina currently live in Scarsdale, New York, with their two boys, nine-year-old Ben and seven-year-old Zac and a five-month-old puppy. 22

OUR HONOREE Brookfield Properties

Brookfield Properties is a longstanding CAW supporter. In 2017, Brookfield Place and Arts Brookfield provided work space and related services for one of our Public Art Youth Employment summer programs, including hosting its public culminating event and unveiling of four youth-created paintings. These paintings are now on display in the New York offices of RBC Capital Management in 200 Vesey in Brookfield Place. Brookfield Properties has a deep commitment to its local communities and bringing people together through its development of world-class mixed-use real estate and its nonprofit support. Arts Brookfield, an initiative of its global asset management parent company, presents dynamic cultural experiences to hundreds of thousands of people for free each year in both indoor and outdoor public spaces at Brookfield’s properties including New York’s Brookfield Place. With art exhibitions, films and performances, Arts Brookfield brings public spaces to life with artful heart and soul for all to enjoy.

OUR HONOREE Felipe Franco Deputy Commissioner, Division of Youth and Family Justice

Felipe was appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in February 2014 to the position of Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Youth and Family Justice within the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), where he currently serves today. Under his tenure at ACS, the number of youth in detention has decreased by over 30%, and the number of youth in placement has decreased by close to 20%. ACS led the full implementation of Close to Home, which, under Felipe’s direction, has become a national and international juvenile justice model by demonstrating that it is possible to safely support youth in the community. In 2017, he completed the Annie E. Casey Foundation Children and Family Fellowship, a prestigious executive leadership program for executives working to improve outcomes for disadvantaged children, families, and communities. Prior to joining ACS, Felipe served as Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth at the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, where he oversaw the full juvenile justice continuum of care, including secure, limited secure, and non-secure facilities. He also led strategic initiatives to reduce reliance on institutional care, focusing on aftercare and community support, which resulted in the closure of twenty-one juvenile prisons. Previously, Felipe served as Director of Juvenile Justice at the Children’s Aid Society; taught at New York University; worked at the NYPD as Coordinator of Community Police Partnerships; served as a Research Associate at the Vera Institute of Justice; and provided clinical services to youth at the Roberto Clemente Family Guidance Center. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico and pursued his Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers.

24

OUR PROGRAM PARTNER NYC Administration For Children’s Services

The NYC Administration for Children’s Services protects and promotes the safety and well-being of New York City’s children, young people, families, and communities by providing child welfare, juvenile justice, early care, and education services. ACS, in partnership with 27 nonprofit agencies, is responsible for the care of nearly 9,000 young people in NYC’s foster care system, and provides a wide range of services to improve the lives of children and families involved in NYC’s juvenile justice system, including preventive and alternative programs and detention and placement services. Since 2015, Creative Art Works has partnered with ACS on numerous visual and multimedia arts programs for teens and young adults in detention at Crossroads and Horizon Juvenile Centers and for children and teens awaiting foster care placement at The Children’s Center and at “Close to Home” residences. CAW developed flexible, age-appropriate curricula that reflects an intentional effort on the part of ACS to offer educational and cultural experiences to the children in their care, whatever their age or duration of stay. These structured, fun, and developmentally appropriate programs offer vulnerable youth important opportunities for creative self-expression and a positive outlook for the future; at the same time, they have offered staff and families new means of positive interactions with the youth. The leadership, management staff, and counselors at the Division of Youth and Family Justice and the Division of Family Permanency have reported positive outcomes, including improved pro-social behaviors, drops in incidences, and enhanced relationships between staff and youth. CAW projects with ACS include five youth employment programs at Crossroads and Horizon Juvenile Centers, including three murals and the creation of a resident handbook and orientation video “created by residents for residents.” CAW has offered after-school painting, drawing, and print-making programs at Children’s Center and many Limited Secure and Non-Secure Placement Centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens.

RESILIENCE IN ACTION Creative Art Works provides after-school workshops for teens and pre-teens at the ACS Children’s Center, a housing facility for children and teens awaiting permanent placement in foster care. Art projects explore a variety of drawing and painting media and are designed to be completed in a single session. Residents may also build a portfolio which they can take with them to their next placement. CAW Teaching Artist Jackie Du told a moving story about the impact of the program. One day, Christopher*, a curious, intelligent 13-year-old who is fascinated by games and sports, came into the art room after an argument in the hallway. Visibly upset, he asked for crayons and some paper. Jackie sat him down at a table and gave him space to work.

Christopher’s drawing made shortly after an argument – gray represents sadness, red represents anger, and yellow represents confusion

Christopher’s first drawing was a commotion of gray, red and yellow, lines. He explained that the gray lines represented sadness, the red lines were for anger, and the yellow lines were for confusion. He said his feelings were all mixed up and bouncing around inside of him. He didn’t know how to control them. Jackie suggested that Christopher might make a second drawing, only this time, he should try separating the colors and perhaps give them shapes. In his second drawing, Christopher drew a gray rectangle in the middle of the page and drew a box around the rectangle, half in red, half in yellow, with a little patch of gray connecting a corner where the anger and confusion met.

Christopher’s second drawing after Jackie suggested he separate the colors and give them shapes

*Name changed to protect privacy 28

After sharing his new drawing, Christopher left the room with calm energy. He had used what he had learned about color in a previous class to express what he was feeling and to develop self-understanding.

WITH YOUR SUPPORT, YOUNG PEOPLE SOAR Andrew Levin Chair & President

It is my dream that one day all young people will have the opportunity to experience artmaking programs like the ones provided by Creative Art Works. We still have a long way to go, but last year, we came a little closer to making that dream a reality. In 2017, Creative Art Works provided more programs and served more kids and young adults than any previous year. We’ve developed exciting new curricula to prepare our young constituents for success in their academic, professional, and personal lives. We’ve built promising relationships with new program partners and strengthened our relationships with existing partners. Our Programs Department has grown with the addition of Ashli Sisk, Program Manager – Operations, and Stefanie Lewin, Program Coordinator. Both Ashli and Stefanie first worked for CAW as teaching artists, and both continue to teach in-school or after-school classes for us part-time. Most recently, Wendy Realmuto became our new Development Associate. We were pleased to welcome three new members to our board. Jamie Watson, founder of Watson + Associates; Bevin Savage-Yamazaki, Firmwide Arts & Culture Practice Area Leader & Senior Associate, at our long-standing partner Gensler; and Vikash Jha, Vice President at Barclays Americas. These dedicated and talented new directors bring a wealth of business management and financial experience to our board as well as impressive backgrounds in fine, commercial, and applied arts. Finally, I am moved by the generosity of our donors and the commitment of our volunteers, without whom our work could not happen. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are grateful for the selfless contributions of tonight’s Honorees and Benefit Co-chairs. I wish to thank David Cheikin and Brookfield Properties for leading our fundraising effort. I am pleased to recognize Felipe Franco, Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Youth and Family Justice within our long-standing program partner, the NYC Administration for Children’s Services (ACS). We are humbled by Deputy Commissioner Franco’s tireless service to children and commitment to meaningful collaborations and honored to partner with ACS to bring programs to at-risk youth in our city. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate all the things that make Creative Art Works special — our kids, our Youth Apprentices, our staff and teaching artists, our program partners, and all the supporters who make our work possible. Yours truly,

SOARING IN ACTION In the internet age, when social media platforms allow young people to instantly broadcast their thoughts and opinions to the world with a just a few taps on their smart phone, face-to-face conversations can seem quaint. Yet conversation and public speaking are skills that kids and adults use every day in school, with friends and family, and on the job.

Gabriela Batista, grade 7, talks about her art at a gallery opening for a painting and drawing class at PS/MS 278

These kinds of interactions give students an opportunity to reflect on what they have learned and a chance to see one another in a different light. Most importantly, students learn that their ideas are valuable and that people want to hear what they have to say. Rowe Davenport, grade 7, with Teaching Artists Zack Pordgny and Ayla Rexroth

At the gallery show for a CAW after-school Drawing and Painting program, students from PS/MS 278 demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of art techniques and facility with art vocabulary. Several artists volunteered to talk about their creative processes to the assembled audience, and all students took the opportunity to discuss their work with small groups of family, friends, and classmates.
