About the Public Service Announcement Program

Students in this after-school class learned to make Public Service Announcement (PSA’s) videos about the health risks of consuming too many sugary snacks and beverages. Students were challenged to craft a compelling argument using testimonials, dramatization, humor and statistics.

Making a video is a collaborative effort that requires teamwork as well as the ability to share or delegate responsibilities as needed. Video-making also requires a broad range of artistic and technical skills, including writing, project planning, storyboarding, directing actors, and video and sound recording and editing. Under the guidance of an experienced Teaching Artist, students worked with professional quality DSLR cameras and audio recording equipment and edited their videos on Adobe Premier, the industry standard software.

Reflections from the Videographers Yadira Ramos In this PSA program, we are making videos that will help persuade people to stop eating so many sweets and stop drinking so many sugary drinks. It was surprising that I could actually edit and record and put together a camera. When I saw the editing program for the first time, it was confusing. There were so many buttons and so many screens, the preview screen, the library... I was like, "Oh, my God! What to do?" But now it’s just easy enough to use, and it's fun. Now I’m thinking, "Maybe I can work in recording movies and editing videos and movies."

Madeline Marcial The best contribution to my group’s PSA was thinking of more ideas, even if some of the ideas were not used. I also learned how to set up a camera to film the actors and I helped edit our video. The thing I liked about the program was working with others. I also discovered that I like filming and it was nice holding the camera and taking videos.

Fatimatou Bah I discovered that I liked editing and writing when I came to this program. I like it because it was fun editing on the computer. I found my perfect vision!

Mariah Lopez I learned in this class how to use cameras. This could help me in the future because I would like to make videos.

Joana Vivas People think that working with cameras and editing video is easy, but it's not. It takes a lot of time for it to actually make sense, but when you get the hang of it, it starts to come easy. My new skill is keeping still with the camera.

Mathew Santos The new skill that I have acquired was learning how to use a camera correctly. Before coming to this class, I didn’t know how to use a real DSLR camera.

Melina Reyes We did a storyboard and we thought about what the actors were going to say. When we started editing, it was kind of hard for me to memorize all the buttons, but then I started doing it faster and it got easier. I was so proud of that. I was like, "Oh my god, I just did this! This is so crazy!” because I'm working on professional software and with professional cameras. I'm really excited to show our PSA and for people to like it.

Jaime Rosado This is my first time working with multi-camera editing and it actually came out pretty well.

Also, now I can actually speak in front of a camera, much more than I used to be able to do. One thing I would say is, if you want to experiment with something new, go for it.

Because chances are you’ll probably be good at it, better than you think.
