hen this magazine’s editorial team was planning the content, it was uplifting to notice how many interesting stories we have around the company. New innovations, R&D work going on in Aachen, a colleague from Denmark running one marathon after another, ambitious life cycle projects where you can see our employees’ professionalism and ambition, someone doing a job on oil rigs, just to name few. Some of these stories made it into this issue, others you will hear more about in upcoming issues.

The name of this magazine, C-People, describes its content well. This magazine is about us, Caverion people, our work and our experiences. When reading the magazine, an interesting and diverse world will unfold in front of your eyes. We really hope that you enjoy the stories here and be surprised, entertained and even educated.

C-PEOPLE WILL COME out only twice a year but, at the same time, we have started the production of video news which will be published four times a year. “Many schools and other public buildings that are renovated present challenges in joining new and old ventilation systems. Oslo and Bergen municipalities wants innovative solutions for better indoor environment in schools, nursing homes and daycare facilities.

ClimaCeil can be compared to a Lego building set. That is, the various parts are made in advance, so that they can quickly be assembled on the construction site, if a standard base installation is in place.

Caverion Technology and Development Director Jens Petter Burud explains that ClimaCeil is a complete technical solution that gathers all the technical installations in one place, including ventilation, electrical and ICT cables, and sprinklers and pipes.

Since ClimaCeil is assembled in modules, it’s flexible. “This makes it easy to move, remove, or set up interior walls, which makes alterations that may occur during the course of the building’s life-cycle much cheaper,” Burud concludes.

Career fairs to strengthen the Caverion brand DURING THE PAST six months, Division Sweden has been working towards strengthening the Caverion brand among university students. The efforts have been concentrated around seven career fairs at the largest technical universities in the country.

“Through an active presence at these fairs, we have established a first contact between Caverion and many of the engineers of tomorrow. The efforts have given young and ambitious people on their way in to the working life a positive image of Caverion,” says Christel Svensson, head of communications and marketing at Division Sweden.

The first fair took place in Stockholm during the autumn of 2014 and the seventh and last fair was completed in mid-February 2015. There was no shortage of interest from the students, who measured in the thousands at each fair.

Aspiring to be the world champion of refrigeration fitting

Refrigeration installer Juuso Hietamies has taken on a big challenge by agreeing to represent Finland in the WorldSkills Competition to be held in São Paulo, Brazil.

JUUSO WAS SELECTED through trials IN team of professionals set to represent Finland in the WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 Competition in refrigeration fitting category. Juuso has previous experience of competing in the Euroskills Competition in 2013, where he came fifth. He expects the competition in Brazil to be tougher, given both the level of the competition and the increased number of competitors. The most skilled fellow competitors are likely to hail from Germany, Asian countries and other Nordic countries.

Juuso is currently also working his way toward a vocational qualification in refrigeration fitting by way of an apprenticeship. Studying, installation work and training for the competition now sets the pace of Juuso’s daily activities. The actual competition tasks were published in February, which is also when more precise training for the tasks began, under the guidance of a tutor.

Juuso’s competition task relates to refrigeration technology and may consist of, for example, a refrigeration machine to be completed according to drawings, and the installation and start-up of the machine. Overall performance is scored, the criteria consisting of factors such as the time spent, the quality of the implementation, working methods and compliance with instructions. Compliance with occupational safety regulations is considered particularly important.

The WorldSkills Competition (WSC) is a professional skills competition organised for young people every other year. The competition includes a world championship event for approximately 40 categories representing various fields of vocational education.. The next competition will be held on 11–16 August 2015, in São Paulo, Brazil. Good luck in the competition, Juuso!

Jumbo project with own doughnut baker Neste refinery’s shutdown in Finland.

NESTE REFINERY IN Porvoo, Finland will have a huge scale repair shutdown this spring.

To complete the job, a total of 4 000 workers will come from around the world, as far as from Australia, Thailand and Senegal. During the four week shutdown the refinery will be cleaned, maintained and checked.

Caverion’s Industrial Solutions will have almost 400 employees working at the site. Thousands of the workers in the area will need accommodations, toilets and parking space. The jumbo size site will also have its own doughnut baker, and it’s estimated they will eat about 160 000 doughnut throughout the four weeks.

“The preparations started over a year ago together with the customer. Caverion needs 200 people more than normally. This is demanding but also an interesting task: a real test of co-operation with customers, management and personnel. Our HSE target is zero TRI and zero deviations so we have to plan ahead and keep our eyes open all the time,” says Olli Kelorita, Unit Manager.

Saving lives with apartment­ specific fire extinguishing system – 6 –

Caverion Finland participated in the development of an apartment-specific fire extinguishing system.

The development work was recognised last year with the 2014 Innovation Award presented by the Finnish Fire Protection Fund.

T

he system was developed because of a growing fire safety problem, due to an increasing number of senior citizens living in their own homes, with poor health.

To tackle this problem, a project aiming to find solutions for safer living was established in Pirkanmaa Safety and Security Cluster in Tampere region.

In the event of a fire, the most effective way of ensuring the occupant’s safety is with an automatic fire extinguishing system. Apartment-specific fire extinguishing systems that meet the requirements of the residential sprinkler system standard had not been available in Finland before.

“The automatic apartment-specific fire extinguishing system is a new solution which ensures safety and allows people to live at home. The equipment has been approved by the authorities and is an example of Caverion’s prod-

uct and service solutions,” says director Jukka Suoja.

Fire extinguishing system makes for improved residential safety The apartment-specific fire extinguishing system contains and suppresses the fire and provides more time for rescuing. In addition to reducing serious personal injuries, the system also helps to limit property damage. An alarm is automatically transmitted either to a 24/7 control room or to the fire and rescue service.

The equipment responds to high temperature and, upon activation, uses a specific amount of water. The water source is a 300–400-litre tank. Caverion has applied for a patent for the equipment.

The fire safety of a normal apartment is inadequate for elderly people living at home.

“You need to be brave and get down to work. And don’t give up if you don’t succeed right away,” says Pasi Virtanen.

“It’s no use waiting for something to get done, if you are not prepared to contribute yourself. It requires you to get out of your own comfort zone,” says Jukka Suoja.

The first equipment is just delivered to the customer and the first lot of equipment is going to production.

Safety first!

Occupational safety is important throughout our business. We focus to improve occupational safety culture and practices by persistently aiming at changing attitudes and operating methods. Each employee in his or her own actions is responsible for safety at work.

At the moment we have different safety methods and tools in use in each division. There will be common policies and goals related to safety during this year.

SAFETY IS A

From smartphone apps to posters Is it safe to work here? What might happen and how? How can I protect myself and my co-workers from possible dangers? Has this specific job been allowed by my manager? Has there been an instruction?

All the employees on the operational side must be aware of the safety regulations and emergency procedures that apply to their area of work and must wear their full personal protective equipment (PPE).

In Germany posters are put on display at all construction sites and properties, to make the employees aware of the potential dangers and risks in the workplace and to jog their memories regarding the questions they need to ask themselves. These posters get people thinking - and potentially prevent an accident here and there thanks to people changing how they act.

Credit card-sized cards will be delivered to the employees in the first quarter of 2015 that will likewise feature these questions. The workers are encouraged to carry the cards with them at all times and to read through the questions before they start work.

In Germany posters are put on display at all construction sites and properties, to make the employees aware of the potential dangers and risks in the workplace.

Have they answered yes to all the questions? Then it’s safe to get to work!

In Sweden accidents and potential risks are being reported in an ordinary smartphone app “IA – avvikelser I arbetsmiljö”(Deviations in the work environment), or discrepancies in the work environment.

Online support for occupational safety Early in 2013, Industrial Solutions launched an online service for preventive safety work, www.ennakoi.fi, open to everyone. The website enables the submission of all reports related to preventive safety work. Reports can also be submitted from mobile devices and conveniently sent to a client at the same time. demonstrate our own safety work and the safety work of our subcontractors to our clients represents a major step forward.

To keep preventive safety in mind at all times, Industrial Solutions will also get the website’s address printed on all work clothing.

The website is the result of Industrial Solutions own development work. Also Caverion Finland took the online service into use at the beginning of 2015.

Waste pocket for the site On-site electrical installation work produces many kinds of waste. In Finland an electrician had an idea of a simple waste pocket that can be easily attached to fixtures, such as a railing, when working at heights. Small installation waste, which could cause a safety risk on the floor, are easily slipped into the pocket and the site is kept tidy and safe. The waste pockets communicate that at Caverion safety comes first.

A suitcase full of security Department 601, Ventilation in Skovlunde, Denmark has introduced security suitcases, which can be found in all the company cars, our assemblers are driving around in. Formerly, security masks and patches were lying loosely around the cars, without a fixed procedure for security measures.

But it got there. Health and safety representative Allan Kragh Pedersen tells, that they investigated the market and decided to buy security suitcases for all company cars.

The suitcases contain, among other things, plaster, gauze tie, masks, eye wash and cream for dry skin.

Everything is assembled in the trunk and there is no need to spend a lot of time looking for a piece of plaster, in case of emergency.

“Now our employees can easily get help if they get something in the eye or cut a finger for instance.. The security suitcases provide peace of mind in everyday life,” says Allan Kragh Pedersen.

The Caverion Girls’ club in Oslo In Norway the Caverion-girls in Oslo have their own girls’ club, and they gather for lunch once a year. But, it’s not “typical girly themes” that are on the agenda.

The theme is far more serious: sexual harassment.

I

t all began two years ago when Caverion’s HSE Coordinator in Oslo, Therese Johannesen, was contacted by a girl who was sexually harassed by a man, not a Caverion employee, who worked for another company at the construction site where she was located. The girl experienced frequently that he would “accidently” brush up against her, and repeatedly tried to hit on her, although she clearly said that she was not interested. It was when she began receiving vulgar text messages that she alerted Therese.

“I invited the 17 female craftspeople who worked in Oslo at the time to a “girl lunch” and it turned out that almost all of them had experienced unwanted sexual attention and harassment at work.

It was staff from other companies at the same building site who was responsible for the harassment,” says Therese.

“We implemented a number of measures to deal with

the problem, but the most positive was the response from our male Caverion colleagues working on the construction sites alongside our girls.”

Caverion-boys watching out for the girls Therese called for a general meeting with all of Caverion’s male and female craftspeople in Oslo, and informed about the situation. When the Caverion boys heard about what the Caverion girls had been subjected to, they were furious.

At the general meeting, they got the better knowledge of what sexual harassment is and how they could intervene and stop the unwanted behavior from others. Therese emphasizes the importance of being open about sexual harassment, and other forms of workplace bullying.

“If we sweep it under the rug and keep our mouth shut, such issues will have a chance to flourish.”

If you see sexual harassment, speak up, and watch your colleague’s back.

“Now the guys speak up if they see someone bothering their female colleague, and tell them to leave the girl alone to work in peace, and to go away. When someone receives such a comment they will stop, because they know that they’re busted and that the others know what they’re doing. It has really helped our girls that the guys are covering their backs - they are not alone.”

If you see something, sexual harassment, bullying or another situation where someone is being bothered, speak up, and watch your colleague’s back.

Kaivomestari, Espoo, Finland Kaivomestari building in the centre of Espoo is the first PPP life cycle project between a public sector organisation and a real estate sector private company in Finland. The building includes a high school, indoor swimming pool, sports centre, gym and an adult education centre. Caverion executed the total techinal solutions to the building and will provide comprehensive maintenance services for the building for the entire duration of the contract period, 25 years.

The most visible spokesman of the life cycle view is Fredrik Strand, the President and CEO, who has been the captain of Caverion for a year now. ”We manage the entire life cycle from individual technologies to advanced total solutions. Few of our competitors have this capability. We see an increasing customer demand for the life cycle solutions. I strongly believe they are the key for the future success of Caverion,” Fredrik Strand states. “Every employee plays a significant role in the execution of the life cycle view. Whether you are an electrician, a plumber, a service technician or a bid calculator, your work is significant for the total life cycle of a well performing building or efficient industrial process.”

Every employee plays a significant role in the life cycle view.

Continuity through the life cycle model For employees, the life cycle model means continuity. Over the course of years or even decades, one learns to know the building like the back of one’s hand. At the same time, one learns to quickly see what kind of maintenance, improvements and modernisation the building needs.

Due to the long-term nature of life cycle projects, regular cooperation and good communication with the client are particularly important. On the other hand, there will be no need to discuss the budget with the client every time there is something to be repaired or renovated, which gives us more leeway in our work. Of course, it pays to be cost-efficient, as any costs saved will profit us.

Three different life cycle models available from Caverion There are different life cycle models but in all of them Caverion is responsible for the maintenance and energy-efficiency of the technical systems for the entire duration of the contract period, which is at least five years and may be more than 20 years. The agreement may also cover the planning and construction of the building or production plant, or it may be limited to improving the energy-efficiency of an existing building.

PPP model The Public Private Partnership (PPP) model is a 15–25-year agreement with a public sector client.

We design, plan and implement the technical and functional solutions for public sector buildings according to the client’s needs. In this way, the buildings will remain in good condition and professionally maintained at all times. At the end of the life cycle agreement, the client may buy the building at a certain calculated price or, if they wish, they may extend the agreement.

“As far as quality is concerned, our cooperation has worked very well.”

JARMO IKÄVALKO, SPORTS MANAGER, CITY OF ESPOO. “The city of Espoo wanted to find out whether the life cycle model is more cost-efficient and of higher quality than maintenance implemented through a traditional service agreement,” says Jarno Salminen, Technical Manager at Caverion. “As far as quality is concerned, our cooperation has worked very well,” says Jarmo Ikävalko, Sports Manager, City of Espoo.

“All annual maintenance tasks have been carried out as planned, and no maintenance backlog has accumulated.

The main thing is that if something falls apart, it is repaired without delay.”

Tommi Tuominen, Service Technician at Caverion, ensures that the conditions in the Kaivomestari swimming facility and other premises are always optimal.

“It takes a complex system and continuous monitoring to keep the water clean. My duties include taking care of the technical systems of the swimming pool, adding chemicals, cleaning the filters and monitoring the pumps and measurement values. Water quality is our first priority.”

“Can’t believe it’s 10 years old” A life cycle project differs from a conventional maintenance contract, both from the client’s and the maintenance worker’s standpoint. For the end user, the main benefit is clear. “In one word: quality,” Jarmo Ikävalko says. Jarno Salminen agrees. “When I started here as a manager in March 2014, I found it hard to believe that the building is over ten years old. Everything was in good and clean condition. The building has been well looked after.”

In a long-term project, a service technician’s learns to know the building and its systems inside out. It is the continuity in the life cycle model that Tommi Tuominen appreciates the most.

“The best thing is the knowledge that your place of work will not suddenly change. You know what is going on in the building and you can work for the future.

In addition, you have more influence in your work.”

For the end user, the main benefit is quality.

EPC model The Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) model refers to an energy savings model in which the clients improve their entire property base, decrease the environmental load and develop their property portfolio. First, we analyse the property base, set the savings target and determine which measures are required to reduce energy consumption. Then we develop the properties, streamline operations and implement the measures agreed on. We can also provide the funding for the project. The projects are usually 5 to 15 years.

ESCO model Our Energy Services Company (ESCO) model offers energy solutions for public sector buildings, private sector commercial properties and industrial facilities. An ESCO project usually involves the modernisation of equipment or a process.

The ESCO model includes an energy audit, project planning and implementation, as well as systems operation and maintenance.

The project is financed with the savings accrued, which are usually savings in energy costs.

Western High Court opened in 2014 and all the technological installations are done by Caverion, who is also responsible for the maintenance of the building for the coming 25 years. The project is a PPP-project (public private partnership), with a lifecycle contract, meaning that we are responsible for all the technology in the building, as well as cleaning and maintenance of the green areas for the coming decades.

Flemming Kildehøj and Frank Larsen control the whole building via IT, and almost everything can be controlled from a computer or tablet. ”Actually, we can turn on one specific lamp in one particular room through the computer, or adjust the temperature in the different rooms and departments.

THE NEWLY BUILT

The building can regulate the heating system itself, depending on the numbers of people within the building. In a courtroom with a lot of people, it‘s normal that the CO2 emission and the heat will rise, but due to the intelligence of the air conditioning system, it will automatically maintain the desired temperature,” says Flemming Kildehøj.

Advanced access Some of the most challenging systems in the Western High Court building are the advanced access system and the elevator system.

But, not everyone has access to all areas. This means that all employees have their own key card for access to the exact area necessary for them.

vator control system. If a policeman has to escort an accused from the prisoner transition in the basement to one of the courtrooms, they can only exit the elevator where they enter the courtroom.

This is in order to prevent them from going to a wrong location or meeting audience or witnesses,” Flemming Kildehøj says.

The judge has to be able to access the courtroom without meeting the audience and the accused will be lead in via the elevator from a small prison with only 10 cells. The building is made with internal and external zones. The public is allowed to access the external zones but they must have a special permission to enter the internal zones of the building.

The police can only access the prison part and enters the building by car via a special gate. The accused will only enter and leave the building through the prison part.

Besides providing access to the different zones of the building, the key card also gives information about the number of people within the building and how they use it.

We test on a scale of 1:1, our large R&D hall is 1,000 m2.

We test air volume, cooling, and indoor climate, we also have an echo chamber for acoustic measurements. Air volume flows of up to 20,000 m2/h, and cooling capacities of up to 250 kW can be measured in the 12-metre-high hall.

We replicate offices to measure exact ventilation speeds, turbulence rates and room temperature gradients. The results can then easily be extrapolated to an entire office building with hundreds of such rooms.

Our research can help save lives as we perform simulations to optimise smoke extraction in large-volume spaces such as theatres and airport terminals.

We do research, testing and simulations for specific projects, which gives the divisions access to new job orders. An average of 60 project reports a year come about as a result of this, and accounts for around two-thirds of Caverion’s research and development work.

It was difficult to operate and had outdated software. Because of the financial situation, it was not possible to purchase a new cutter, so we reprogrammed it. Thanks to the new software the production line speed has increased.

In addition, the safety of the cleaners of the production line was improved as the operation of the safety switch was changed in the new software.”

“I remember a case from last autumn at a preschool, not far from our headn office in Stockholm. They were having problems with a blocked storm drain and needed someone to come and have a look. We placed a service order and a local plumber was assigned the job to see what was causing it. As it turned out, the children had been hiding their plastic toy shovels in the storm drain and the plumber had to remove a total of 161 colorful shovels to be able to clear the blockage.”

”I received a complaint from a property manager of an office building, who said a tenant in the building had called our HelpDesk one evening but had to wait for an unacceptably long time for someone to answer the call. This was a special call line opened for the client, so such a delay seemed strangeIn the end, we determined the cause of the delay: it was a fault in the system. We pinpointed the fault and fixed it. In the end, we had a satisfied client because we fixed the problem, kept the client informed and delivered them the necessary reports.”

The plumber had to remove 161 colorful shovels to be able to clear the blockage.

Service Manager Roman Blasl, Austria “With around 6,000 repair and service jobs a year at Austrian supermarkets, we make sure that the refrigerated shelves always work perfectly and customers receive fresh goods. Once a supermarket manager phoned us in a state of panic: “The drain of the milk shelving unit is blocked! The whole area under the refrigerated unit is flooded! The customers are complaining. You have to come immediately!”

We of course headed over without delay. The scene awaiting us was really not very pleasant. A quick check of the drainage pipe however was enough to find the blockage.

There are many things that can block a drainage pipe but this was one we would not have guessed: an open pack of gummy bears!”

Sales and marketing consultant, Thomas Augdal, Norway “Last year, service technician Arne Garberg got some occasional assignments for fire security at a car dealership, in Trøndelag, mid-Norway. The client was very pleased with the service, so we were able to secure a meeting with the customer, and we agreed on a date for a building inspection.

During the inspection we found a leak in a heating plant. The customer was not surprised; the leak had apparently been there for a long time. A plumber from another company had tried to find the cause of the leak, without success. The Caverion team systematically troubleshot the heating plant, found the leak and fixed the error in no time! The client was obviously very satisfied, so they signed a complete ServiFlex agreement for all disciplines, and a framework agreement.”

“Our customer Scandi Parts, that make swimming pools, contacted us because their customer needed new management systems for some pools on three of their cruise ships. The installations were on their way out of service, and the control system was about to expire, so it was time to an update. Our task was given to us a month before departure, so there was limited time for preparation. I flew to Sydney and boarded the cruise ship.

At night, I worked on the various pools and we programmed the new system and upgraded tables and equipment. All boards were disconnected and rebuilt.

The mornings were used for testing before the pool opened in the afternoon.

Caverion had back in 2002 designed the management systems and this time we completely upgraded and tested the system performance during operation.”

Project engineer Stephan Radow, Germany It was in the run-up to Christmas, so in the shopping center decorated Christmas trees had been placed in the entrance area, with beautifully giftwrapped presents arranged under them.

One morning, all the ventilation systems suddenly switched to smoke extraction mode, resulting in the Christmas decorations flying around all over the place.

We tried to work out what had caused it. We checked everything, and theonly remaining possibility was a fault with the fire brigade’s control panel. Upon opening it we saw that its uninterruptible power supply (UPS) was damaged.

Once we had checked and overridden the power supply, we were able to rectify the malfunction in the ventilation system – and the shopping center team were able to put the Christmas decorations back where they belonged.

Caverion Extreme In Northern Finland, the sun stays below the horizon in the winter, and the temperature may drop down to -40 °C. But, in the summer the Lappish wilderness bathes in the light of the midnight sun. In these extreme conditions Caverion thrives with the help of cooperation and the right attitude.

averion’s operations in Northern Finland is characterised by extreme climate, long distances and few clients. Despite this, the northern units have achieved positive results.

Thanks to good cooperation between Caverion Finland and Caverion Industria, clients can get what they need from one single provider.

In Keminmaa the two companies are going to move under the same roof.

This means that Caverion Finland will be responsible for the property maintenance in industrial settings while Caverion Industria will provide the maintenance and project services for the production processes.

Challenging conditions every day Challenges are very familiar to the employees in Northern Finland. Some of the employees include specialists such as divers. “At Hydropower, we have three divers who work in freezing water in the winter, even at 50 metres below the surface. In winter, they stay down for approximately an hour at a time. It is extremely hard work. The bulk of our work is carried out indoors, but there is outdoor work as well. We do not have a minimum temperature for work, so, if necessary, we work in thermal overalls.

Most work sites are accessible by car, but for the inaccessible ones we use snowmobiles in winter and ATVs in summer,” Erkki says.

Caverion’s future in Northern Finland looks good. What makes it possible is our highly competent personnel with the right attitude and knowledge about the area and its challenging market.

As long as I have a pulse, 14 marathon races in seven continents in seven days. That is what the head of the service center in Aalborg is currently training for in order to complete the challenge by September 2015. In March 2013 he ran seven marathon races in seven continents in seven days. And now he is about to do it again in an even more extreme challenge… TEXT Louise Wilhelmsen | PHOTOS Per L. ompleting a marathon race can be a hard challenge for most of us. But not for the head of the service center in Aalborg, Casper Juhl Simonsen, who can’t get enough of extreme races. For 2015 he has, together with a friend, set a goal for running 14 marathon races in seven continents in seven days. By completing this challenge he will then have doubled his Guinness World Record which he sat in 2013, by running seven marathon races in seven continents in seven days.

“I like to challenge myself. In this project you don’t have a manual and we have to figure out a system for the logistics when it comes to transportation from continent to continent, so it fits with the different races. During the races in 2013 we were tired and in pain, but we never considered giving up. As long as I have a pulse, I will carry out the races,” says Casper Juhl Simonsen.

We put the clock back to March 2013, when Casper and his friend Ole started their challenge. From here Casper will tell us about that week back in March 2013, which beyond the challenging races consisted approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes of sleep, a few showers and a very limited amount of real food.

atmosphere and support along the race was amazing and by lunch time, after a well completed race, we boarded a plane towards Chile and the next challenge.

3 SAN FRANCISCO In order to have energy enough to complete the many races we had to eat 3 times as much as we normally do, which we didn’t do at all. This resulted in us living only of food supplements and very limited actual food. In San Francisco, USA, we completed our third race. Our shins started to hurt very much. When we came home, it turned out that a part of our shins were broken due to exertion.

But we kept on running and completed the third race.

2 SANTIAGO We arrived in Chile at 1 AM and due to our tight schedule we had to complete the race shortly after arrival. Our legs were hurting and the second marathon race was very tough because we had neither slept nor eaten very much.

I will carry out the races 4 SYDNEY From San Francisco we continued by flight to Sydney, Australia, were the fourth marathon race was planned. We arrived and ran the fourth race in the area around the famous Bondi Beach. It was a very cragged route with a lot of hills and it was very hard – we were actually regretting the route but when we arrived at the Opera House it was an amazing feeling.

7 HADSUND We ended our journey in Hadsund, where we finished the last of the seven marathon races together with 60 other runners. We slept a whole night before the race, which meant the world for us and completed the race in style.

5 ABU DHABI Our shins were still troubling us and we had not had much food or sleep. We were running in the city on a four lane highway with a lot of traffic and people were looking at us in a weird way.

But I am determined about doing it again, in an even harder challenge because I love it. Afterwards I think that I am done with these races. We spend a lot of time on training and preparing and there has to be room for other things in life as well.

6 CAIRO The marathon race in Cairo, Egypt, was completed during the night and it took us 5 hours and 30 minutes to complete the same distance we had only used 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete by the start of the challenge.

his success recipe was created in the Caverion branch Harstad, in northern Norway, where they publish images on insta with #caverion, #caverionnorge and their own #caverionharstad.

Using beautiful scenery as a backdrop for their pictures, the Harstadcrew was quickly noticed by the rest of Caverion, and likes and comments started to flourish. Now some of the chefs behind the Harstad success-recipe share their experiences.

“Fun to be noticed” Service technician for low voltage power, Even Mannerud (32) thinks it’s fun to be noticed, and says that they often talk about Instagram during lunch.

proud, and we feel appreciated,” says Mannerud.

But it’s not only people in Caverion that get to see the images, as Senior relationship manager for service, Tore Henriksen, actively shows their Instagram-efforts to “outsiders”.

“I often pull out my mobile at customer meetings to show some pictures and stuff from Instagram that our people publish.”

Encourages more people to share on insta “It would be great if several more colleagues from around the Europe shared cool pictures with #caverion,“ Tore says.

Others have had their first meeting with the image-sharing network through work, as plumber Geir Solvang (51), who has been with Caverion for a total of 28 years.

“I’m having a lot of fun sharing work-related pictures on insta.”

The clients will probably hit “like” the next time they see something from us.

Showing off Service Technician for safety, Sveinung Gabrielsen (30) loves to show off Caverion. “Instagram is a nice platform to show off our company and our people. However, I miss more pictures from Caverion’s official accounts, preferably pictures from worksites, and buildings, that most people can relate to.”

Also indoor personnel in Harstad are active on Instagram. HSE Coordinator/Adm. secretary, Trude Fors Falkeng (42), is happy to share photos, and checks #caverionharsatd often.

“There are lots of great pictures; we are a department full of clever and creative employees. We are proud of Caverion and what we do, and everyone else should know about it! It makes it easy to take great pictures, as we live and work in the most beautiful part of the country, right?”

One thing is certain, the Harstadcrew is definitely having a good time.

Illiterate all of a sudden Study trip to China TEXT

of China is approximately 8,300 kilometres, or just over ten flight hours, from Germany. But distance isn’t just measured in kilometres or hours, as Maximilian Gäpel is well aware of –since he spent two months living and working in China. He experienced all sorts of new things while he was there in terms of culture, ways of life and working methods – and also what’s put on your plate.

His first impression on arriving in China? “Oh no, I’m illiterate!” says Maximilian Gäpel. Because it takes years of intensive learning of the Chinese language and characters to do simple things such as finding your way around quickly or catching a bus – and all Maximilian Gäpel had was some basic vocabulary in Mandarin Chinese, the official language in China. The fact that the 27-year-old supply and energy management student made it to his host family’s house is thanks to the local agency that organised and oversaw his placement abroad.

THE PEOPLE ’S REPUBLIC

From the auditorium to the “green island” Maximilian Gäpel is on a sandwich course at Caverion, which means he alternates between theoretical and practical training every three months. He works on specific projects during the practical training stages, then studies supply and energy management at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) in Stuttgart. The DHBW gave him the opportunity to go on a two-month placement abroad, and Maximilian chose to go to Qingdao in China, which means “the green island”.

Qingdao is a coastal city in the province of Shandong in the east of China. It is located between the megacities of Beijing and Shanghai. “With a population of more than 3.5million, Qingdao is a small town by Chinese standards,” says Maximilian.

Green eggs So what sort of an impression does a country like China have on a European student like Maximilian?

“All of a sudden, everything – the

language, the people, where you live and what you eat – is different,” he says. For example he tried pidan, also known as century eggs, which are considered a delicacy in China. Pidan are made by mixing star anise, Sichuan pepper, tea leaves, pine needles, fennel seeds, salt, hot water, lime, wood ash and sawdust. A raw duck’s egg (or occasionally a chicken’s egg) is then placed in this mixture and is left for three months. During this time, the eggshell goes black, the egg white turns golden-coloured and jelly-like, and the yolk takes on a greenish hue. And what does it taste like? “Once you’ve overcome your initial inhibitions, it’s surprisingly OK,” says Maximilian.

It wasn’t just in the area of cuisine that Maximilian Gäpel learned a lot during his two months in China – in addition to the language, he encountered a different way of thinking too. “We’re very direct in Germany and usually want to get straight to the point. But, it’s different in China,” he says.

“In China, people express themselves neutrally.”

Lasting impressions Maximilian did, of course, also use his time abroad to gather practical experience relating to his studies. To do so, he worked at the company UDG (United Design Group), which specialises in heating technology. And his induction at the company went surprisingly smoothly. “The software there is almost identical to what’s commonly used in Germany,” he says, adding that he communicated with his co-workers mostly in English.

Two months later, Maximilian found himself back at Beijing Airport. And this time, he didn’t need any help, and was able to work everything out for himself.

In addition to the language, he got to know the very special hospitality of the Chinese and formed some lasting friendships. He also learned a lot about himself too: “Encountering different ways of thinking and lifestyles really changes the perception of your own identity,” says Maximilian.

Golden Helmet award

Suggest winners for the Annual Caverion Award LAST YEAR WE started a new tradition called the Golden Helmet Award. Golden Helmet will be awarded to four individuals or teams, who have done extraordinary excellent work in strategy execution. It is your task to suggest the winners. You can make suggestions until 24 April.

There are four categories, so four awards will be handed out. Any Caverion employee from any country can nominate a winner. A jury will pick the winners, which will be announced in beginning of June.
