I

n this magazine, we pay extra attention to work safety. Our goal is to become an accident-free workplace, of which we can all be proud. Our work safety development has been good but we have still a lot to do to prevent unnecessary accidents. In the centrefold of this magazine, you can find a safety poster.

Please place it on your site or wall to remind you every day of the right work safety gear. In 2016, we have been putting a lot of focus also on our Code of Conduct. This issue gives you a chance to test whether you would act correctly in nine ethically-challenging situations! What are the most positive things about Caverion?

Caverion is a leading player in our core markets. Our reputation amongst the customers is very good based on our experience, knowhow and comprehensive service offering. ­I love working in the services field.

You can focus on customers but at the same time you need to make sure our people’s motivation is on a good level.

Good service is not possible if our employees don’t feel good themselves.

What is your way of leading?

I believe it is very important that we have a very clear strategy and direction.

I believe people who do the actual work also know best how to develop it. I want to learn our business and organisation and will spend a lot of time meeting our people. On the other

hand, I hope our people are open to new ideas and best practices from elsewhere. I do not like silos and “not invented here” thinking. It is a waste of opportunity if we cannot use and copy the best ways of working from one place to another.

Can you list three things every Caverion employee should keep in mind?

Firstly, the customer pays our salaries.

So, let's focus on our customers and understand how we can help them to succeed. At the same time, clients need to “pay the salaries”. We are not in the charity business.

Secondly, look for improvements all the time. Be open and listen to others and be ready to try new things.

Thirdly, our safety statistics are all right but not great. Be careful and help others to be careful. Do not accept

How do you see the future of our brand?

We are still a new company and our brand is not yet as well-known as older brands like Siemens, KONE etc.

I hope people will connect things like good service attitude, quality and efficiency to our brand. By doing our work well and finding ways to grow, the brand awareness will increase and that will help us to get an even more sustainable future.

The place you would like to visit (other than Caverion offices…)

I have lived in Asia for years and I worked in Italy for three years.

However, I have never visited New Zealand and I hope to go there one day.

Caverion’s third employee engagement survey, the Caverion Spirit, will take place on a group-wide basis from 28 February – 17 March, 2017.

The goal of the survey is to give feedback and help us focus on the key issues that need improvement to drive employee engagement, excellent leadership and high performance.

In the last survey, a total of 12,829

employees (79%) participated. That was an already high response rate, but we can do even better this time.

The survey will be conducted online throughout the entire Caverion Group.

At the local level, each unit is responsible for organising responding.

Around the world by foot 15 times – in 4 weeks!

The staff from Caverion Germany walked or ran no less than 590,000 kilometres in one month – the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe 15 times. Why? For the “We Need a Boost!” health initiative. Some 1,400 employees participated – almost 60 percent of the division’s workforce.

The initiative was a continuation of the Caverion Space Saga. With the Caverion technicians’ service vehicle stranded en route to customers all over the world, kinetic energy for the drive had to be collected to get it rolling again.

To accomplish their mission, each

participant was given a pedometer made by the campaign partner Garmin. The challenge for the teams of four to ten employees was to take at least 10,000 steps per day. A donation was promised to the local summer party if the employee team beat the management team at the end of the four-week campaign. Daily rankings were posted on a campaign webpage.

Beyond expectations

“The success of the initiative went way beyond our expectations,” summed up Werner Kühn, CEO of Caverion Germany. “On average, the participants covered far more than the daily target of 10,000 steps.” But the enthusiasm and team spirit that pervaded the whole company throughout the initiative was considered an even greater triumph.

The participants arranged to get together and collect steps.

8 times more safety observations!

Competition increased proactive safety activities in Eastern Europe An internal work safety competition boosted work safety reporting in the Eastern Europe division. The average reporting activity compared to earlier months increased more than 8 times at the divisional level. Reporting activity has remained above the earlier level even after the competition.

The ultimate competition target was to increase safety awareness and thinking by focusing on proactive work safety in daily work activities.

The competition was based on the personal reporting activity of safety observations and near-misses. The winners were awarded Caverion Space Saga T-shirts.

In all of the countries reporting activity significantly increased.

Technicians and site engineers actively participated. The employees especially in Estonia and St. Petersburg, Russia reported many useful observations.

“I am glad to see this kind of proactive activity in work safety. It is nice to notice how small personal motivators can matter. I hope this competition encouraged us all to pay more attention to daily work safety and also being proactive in the future,” noted Niclas Sacklén, Head of the division Eastern Europe.

Caverion Austria equips a hospital in Nicaragua

Caverion is delivering, together with Austrian company Solid, a solar thermal cooling and hot water system for Nicaragua's largest and most modern hospital, Hospital Militar Dr. Alejandro Dávila Bolaños in Managua, capital of the country.

The solar plant has a surface area of about 4,500m² and is situated on the roof of the hospital. The plant will produce the entire hot water demand and about 30% of the cooling demand

of the hospital. This will be done with an absorption chiller, which uses the hot water from the solar collectors to produce chilled water.

The logistics will be a real challenge in this project. The travel time from Austria to Managua is about 20 hours. Material deliveries take about 5 weeks. And the time difference to colleagues back home is 8 hours.

Nicaragua has a tropical climate with two seasons, wet and dry. The

temperature is 25–35°C the whole year. There are also tropical storms and hurricanes; therefore the solar collectors have special mounting systems.

“But there are also very nice situations. The last time I was in Managua, I was sitting at the breakfast table in the garden of the small hotel, when suddenly a mature mango fell directly onto my table,” says Christian Schiefer, Project Manager.

Lithuanians and Danish joined forces for ship repair in Hong Kong Caverion Denmark and Caverion Lithuania have a long partnership history in the ship construction business at the Port of Klaipeda in Lithuania.

The partnership recently took a new form after a fire accident of a client’s container ship. Caverion Lithuania was asked to support Caverion Denmark‘s team in Hong Kong. A crew of six telecommunications specialists travelled to provide assistance.

“Our initial plan was to stay up to three weeks and perform installations.

However, after the completion of the main installations, our team was assigned to the testing group with South Korean specialists. Our team tested control panels, engaged in information sharing, conducted trouble-shooting on faults found, and finalised repairs and change-out work,” explained Vilius Skardžiukas, Team Leader of Caverion Lithuania.

The Danish were happy with this new kind of co-operation. “This was a good working crew with a high sense of quality and knowledge of how to get the job done right the first time.

They were good companions both on the worksite and during spare time, as well. I would very much like to work with them again,” noted Lars Ryhl, Electrical Supervisor, Caverion Denmark.

Health and safety distinction in Sweden The project Citybanan HSE award for 2015-2016 has been awarded to a team from Caverion. Citybanan is one of Sweden’s largest construction projects in the last 20 years. The project is managed by the Swedish transport administration and one of the goals is to reduce the number of accidents to an absolute minimum.

The transport administration have evaluated the contractors’ efforts in the HSE area during the course of the

project. When needed, they have also suggested and demanded improvements. During these evaluations it was clear that Caverions piping-team, under the supervision of Sven Ekebom, have been handling the HSE work admirably and according to the high demands of the transport administration. The distinction was therefore awarded to the highly devoted Sven Ekbom for his HSE work in the Project Citybanan.

he successful cooperation between the Caverion units contributed to the new control room coming into service smoothly after a change-over of 72 hours, switching over 265 signals from the old control room to the new.

“We have, among other things, been responsible for the low supply of both the generator section and the UPS systems. Alarm panels were built in case of fire and a new network structure with two independent fibre links was built to reduce the risk of crashes,” says electrician Leif Erik Pedersen, who is part of Caverion’s permanent Managed Services team at the refinery. The permanent staff, including Rene D. Larsen and Ejvind Pedersen, have also been very involved in the project.

Collaboration was smooth

Security and Communication (Michael Diget, Gert Rasmussen and Keld Dam Hansen) took care of digitising video surveillance, ports, fibre and phones. Thomas Bech installed a distributed antenna system, which is an indoor mobile antenna. Jan Esbensen from Managed Services participated actively in engineering and worked with the project team. Switchgear has been developed by the service centre in Kolding.

“It’s not easy to put things in the walls and floors, because the control room is filled with rebar. It has been a challenge so everything has taken longer,” says Leif Erik Pedersen.

Digitised monitoring and updated fibre infrastructure

The new control room has a new upgraded video surveillance system.

The old room had analogue surveillance that was converted to an IP-based solution. Now it is all digital.

First, all existing fibres were switched in the old control room, then a fibre infrastructure was installed in the new control room. Everything was de-

signed and executed by Security and Communication in close cooperation with Managed Services.

Shell are extremely satisfied

Shell’s project manager Michael Jeppesen worked with Caverion during the completion of the control room.

“We wanted to work with a partner who we knew would manage the job. We knew that Caverion could, because the company has its daily walk with us. Caverion showed commitment delivering work to a high standard. It is also an advantage that Caverion has competence in other areas and that they can get the right people in. It is also important that Caverion grew up with the Shell refinery, which this year turned 50,” says Michael Jeppesen.

INCREASING TECHNOLOGY

With its 19,447 square kilometres the municipality of Kiruna covers an area half the size of the Netherlands.

About 23,000 persons live in Kiruna.

To create the right conditions for increasing production capacity, the Swedish mining company LKAB is rebuilding its plant in Kiruna, Sweden. Caverion plays a big part in increasing the efficiency in one of the plants.

“LK AB IS INVESTING a great deal in projects to create the necessary conditions to increase the production capacity. The upgrade of the plants is one of these projects. By modernising the existing plants, we will be able to increase our production capacity of pellet products from 13.6 to 14.8 million tons a year,” says Johan Henriksson, Project Manager at LKAB. LKAB's total production makes up around 75% of all iron ore production in the EU. The company’s importance for the northern town of Kiruna is hard to overestimate, much like the sheer size of the mine itself. LKAB is a town within the town and the total length of just the roads within the mine gives a clear hint of its size. A total of 600 kilometres of drivable roads stretch deep underground the mountains.

The rebuilding of the plants mainly consists of changing pumps, piping and tanks, in other words – the heart and lungs of the plant. The work is carried out in a complex production environment during ongoing production. This means that Caverion's employees are facing high demands and in order to not interfere with the

production the project is divided into sections. The new parts are also being installed step by step during preplanned maintenance stops.

“Caverion has cooperated with LKAB ever since the beginning of the 80’s, and we therefore have a deep knowledge about the production environment,” says Per Danielsson, District Manager at Caverion Industrial Piping.

The work began in December 2015 and is scheduled to be finished during October 2016.

Innovative solutions

“So far the project has gone well.

Caverion has suggested innovative solutions so that they have been able to push through some stages of the work. It’s a big advantage for us to be able to contract a company with a strong local presence and a great knowledge about our facility,” says Johan Henriksson.

“Caverion Industrial Piping works all over the area of the ore fields and LKAB is our biggest client. Besides a big project department we have an equally big service organisation that assures uninterrupted production for our clients. I’m proud of our capacity

e met with auto­ mation technician ­ in Norway, Jan Henrik Risnes (27), who has been part of piloting ServiFlex+.

“For us technicians, ServiFlex+ is not something completely new.

It’s just a renewed concept for our preventative maintenance and how it’s presented to the customer,” Jan Henrik explains.

ServiFlex+ has four different level of service: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond. The most basic level

(Bronze), includes planned service, statutory service, technical asset­registration and access to our portal ClientNet. In comparison, Old ServiFlex only includes planned service, and statutory service.

“So for us technicians, the new thing is the installation of a remote surveillance kit, called Caverion Condition Control. This kit includes different wireless sensors and receivers that we install in the building.

These sensors then sends information about the building to our remote center,” Jan Henrik says.

“Condition Control and ServiFlex+ must not be confused to be the same thing though. Condition Control can be a part of ServiFlex+, but doesn’t have to be,” he adds.

With the Condition Control, Caverion monitors the energy consumption, temperature and humidity, air quality, and heat recovery efficiency. In the portal ClientNet, the customer can see how their building is performing, and benchmark towards other similar buildings.

Quick and easy installation

Earlier this year Jan Henrik tested the instalment of the Condition Control at a Norlandia kindergarten in Oslo.

“The installation was pretty straight forward, and it only took about 3 hours from start to finish. The sensors run on battery, and you don’t need to do any changes to existing technology in the building.”

Jan Henrik explains that the installation was done while the kindergarten was open, and the children present.

“I only installed two sensors in the common areas where the children were, and the rest was installed in the technical rooms, so you don’t disturb the people who are using the building while you work.”

“After the equipment is installed, we collect the data from the system in our remote center. Here the technicians can easily see if something needs fixing, and troubleshoot,” he adds.

What does ServiFlex+ mean for our customers and sales people?

Caverion Group’s Head of Business Development for Technical Maintenance, Roar Selland, has developed ServiFlex+, and the kit for Caverion Condition Control.

“For the customer, ServiFlex+

means that they can choose different levels of preventative maintenance, and also add on the Condition Control if they like. For our sales people, ServiFlex+ means a better concept, which is easier to sell, and a new sales tool which calculates price and has an agreement-generator,” Roar says.

Within end of 2017 all Caverioncountries will start to sell ServiFlex+, which Jan Henrik looks forward to.

“ServiFlex+ will mean more sales, and more sales equals more work,” he concludes.

There are many key factors for successful integration, such as learning the language. Employment also plays a major role. Kiflom and Abdul recently joined Caverion.

Eye for the job KIFLOM FITWI NEGASSI, a 20-year-old Eritrean, has lived in NeuIsenburg in Hessen for a little over two years taking secondary school exams and learning German. The employment office advertised an entry level qualification for an SHK systems mechanic with Caverion in the Frankfurt branch. There, Kiflom works with colleagues in customer service, and is learning the ropes of everyday life on the job, as well as pushing his technical skills.

Customer service manager Michael Böhm describes Kiflom as engaged, eager to learn and someone "with an eye for the job". He is doing well working with his colleagues, and problems of mutual understanding are nothing they can't handle. After his entry qualification, Kiflom Fitwi Negassi will get a regular training contract.

No special treatment ABDUL ZAMIR KARIMI from Afghanistan started his training as an sanitation, heating and climate control systems mechanic with Caverion in Stuttgart, after finishing at the training site. The 20-year-old completed high school in Kabul, and has been living in Germany since 2015. He gets along well with the other trainees, says his tutor Peter Friedrich.

Abdul has a knack for learning quickly and doesn't need any special treatment. Their only rule: Peter has to speak proper German with him.

"He has a hard time with Schwäbisch dialect", Peter says with a grin.

"Helping refugees to integrate is close to our hearts", says Patrick Hartmann, Head of Human Resources for Caverion Germany. "We are short of suitable training candidates, and places were going unfilled. So we looked for new perspectives - for ourselves as a business, for Kiflom, Abdul and many others."

Don’t rush it – observe work safety guidelines Work safety at Caverion is continuously improving, but there are still too many occupational accidents. They are typically related to falling, cutting oneself and incorrect working methods, such as lifting and moving techniques.

Trips, slips, falls and collisions account for about 37 per cent of occupational accidents this year. The easiest way to prevent trips and collisions is to keep walkways clean and free from obstacles. All objects must be kept in their designated places. A further minor but important point is to always walk along marked routes at all sites.

Accidents caused by poor ergonomics

Eye injuries

Occupational accidents related to ergonomics account for about 14 per cent of accidents this year. When lifting objects from the ground, this should never be done using just your back. In addition, it is always better to use tools or ask a colleague for help than to lift a heavy object alone. In the case of demanding objects, lifting must be planned in advance, in order to acquire the necessary tools in time.

Eye injuries are also common, making up about 10 per cent of all accidents, in spite of the use of safety goggles.

This means that the goggles have not been protective enough for the task at hand. It is of paramount importance that work is carefully planned and safe working methods are established in advance. Risks should not be taken in any situation.

The percentages of the various types of accidents were calculated using the figures for the entire Caverion Group.

Cuts make up about 25 per cent of accidents this year. In preventing cutting accidents, it is important to pay attention to proper tools and possible sharp corners at the worksite. For example, roofing profiles put on top of the roof structure often cause unnecessary cuts.

Ladder accidents represent about 10 per cent of all accidents. For example, in Finland there were two serious falls in early autumn. In one of these accidents, the worker fell from a height of two metres, and in the other case, the ladder slipped under the worker.

When using a ladder, it is important to observe the guidelines for the use of different types of ladders. For example, an extension ladder must not be used if it is possible to use a platform or a hoist. A lower price or a busy schedule are not acceptable reasons for using an extension ladder.

Cameras and microphones help with training

More than one thousand current and future professionals of medicine, health sciences, biosciences and nursing work and study in the Arvo 2 building. The premises are large: three spacious auditoriums, over 40 teaching rooms, almost 40 meeting rooms and seven simulation rooms.

There are simulation facilities for emergency medicine, X-ray and intensive care in which students practise the various stages and functions of the treatment chain. All the simulation facilities are divided into a control room and an operating room in which dummy patients receive real treatment.

of only three millimetres. This is a new opening for us as well,” notes Project Manager Juha Leko from Caverion.

“We wanted presentation technology that you can watch both up close and from further away. Luminosity and resolution in particular had to be sufficient. A video wall was definitely the best choice,” Sorri adds.

International cooperation is common in the field of medicine, and excellent encrypted videoconferencing connections are therefore of key importance in daily work. Recordings of teaching sessions have improved the opportunities for remote study and collaboration.

A huge video wall

Caverion delivered all AV equipment for the common premises of Arvo 2: about 70 screens, 40 recording cameras and more than 70 loudspeakers and different kinds of microphones. An impressive video wall was installed in the largest auditorium.

“On the basis of our experience, I recommend close cooperation between the AV designer, architect and furniture designer right from the start.

For example, it is much more laborious to move a screen and projector to the right place afterwards than to get it right the first time. I think it would be most convenient to order all AV technology from the same supplier,” Sorri says.

Since the equipment operates in a network, deployment must be carefully planned in advance and carried out with the IT department to ensure the smoothest experience for the end users.

“We have received much praise from the users of the premises.

Students have been particularly pleased with the large screens, which enable group work. Teachers have been satisfied with the user-friendly control equipment. Caverion’s Juha did his job well,” Sorri adds.
