In this issue we show you some of your colleagues that are doing extraordinary work to reach the strong growth targets that were set for the strategy period 20142016. No matter if we are working with increasing safety in tunnels in Austria (p. 20), improving energy efficiency in Sweden and Norway (p. 14), or creating innovative and advanced solutions (p. 22), we are all contributing towards our common goals.

By executing them well we can reach the remaining two, Increasing profits and Strong growth. From brewery to luxury apartments Frankfurt am Main, Germany is a new 140-m-tall residential tower which is externally inspired by the old grain silo of the former Henninger brewery, and will replace the former city landmark. It covers 77,000 m2 and will contain more than 200 luxury apartments over its 40 floors.

A U-shaped block development will provide additional floor space for commercial service providers. The cornerstone for this project was laid in June 2014 and the first residents are expected to move into the building in 2016.

Norway’s leading grocery chain uses Caverion control system grocery chain, Rema 1000 have an aim to reduce its energy con­sumption by 20% within 2020. In a step to achieve this, nearly all of Rema 1000’s five-hundred stores in Norway have control systems through Caverion. Their merchants can therefore easily control and adjust things like temperature, light, ventilation and energy consumption from a computer, or a tablet.

Golden Helmet 2015 Awards

In 2015 we celebrated the Golden Helmet award winners for the second time as the annual tradition was initiated last year.

In 2014 we received 160 nominations. This year the number of nominations grew to an impressive 233 suggestions in total.

The proposals came from employees representing nearly all Caverion countries. Any Caverion employee from any country is free to suggest their peers as candidates.

Background The award winners were selected by Caverion’s management and announced in June. The awards went to four individuals or teams, who had done extraordinarily excellent work in strategy execution in four different categories.

“It was definitely not an easy task to choose the winners,” comments jury member Merja Eskola representing HR and the owner of the award process.

“There were a number of outstanding candidates, all of which were very close to the top performers. I hope this encourages an even bigger number of nominations next year. Our warmest congratulations to this year's winners!" Merja concludes.

Innovative and advanced solutions WINNERS: JUKKA SUOJA, ANTTI HIIRIKOSKI, VILLE LAHTINEN, TIMO METSÄRANTA, PASI VIRTANEN AND JOUNI ÄYRÄS Tampere, Finland Jukka Suoja led the team’s development project for the apartment-specific fire extinguishing system, developed in co-operation with the Pirkanmaa Safety and Security Cluster.

The system was recognised with the 2014 Innovation Award in Finland and featured in national media. The solution adds to the safety of physically challenged occupants. Caverion has applied for a patent for the equipment.

Excellent leadership WINNER: ROMAN WASMAYR Linz, Austria Roman is an excellent apprentice trainer. The apprentice training program of the Linz branch has twice been awarded as outstanding by public authorities, the Ministry of Economics and the Chamber of Commerce. Also during his free time, Roman is always available for the young people.

Operational excellence WINNERS: STANISLAV GLADKOV, ALEXANDER ZVYAGIN AND ALEKSEY PUCHKIN. Moscow, Russia The METRO Cash & Carry in Dubrovka, Moscow, is the first project with the client, and its success was crucial for further co-operation. The project – covering 8,000 m2² – required a large volume of work in only two months, including documentation, reconstruction of the building, with partial retention and modernisation as well as installation of engineering systems and equipment.

Strong company image WINNER: THERESE JOHANNESEN Oslo, Norway Therese's work with Inclusive Workplace and sick leave prevention has been noticed by the major political organizations in Norway, the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise and the Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions, and also by the Norwegian government. Not only have we gained great publicity, but we have also made key contacts at a national level, which is a major accomplishment.

n Caverion, we design, build, operate and maintain user-friendly and energy-efficient solutions for buildings, infrastructure and industrial plants. With our 17,000 employees in 12 European countries, we are doing our part to reduce carbon footprint, for example through our service Energy Performance Contracting (EPC).

Gladly, the request for EPC is on the rise all over Europe, and in Sweden and Norway Caverion has a strong foothold with this type of service.

Through EPC, Caverion is helping customers in saving money, energy and the planet.

Reduced yearly energy costs with € 500,000 in Sweden In the Swedish town Mora, Caverion has for the past 2,5 years been undertaking one of the largest EPC projects in the division’s history – reducing the municipality’s energy costs with € 500,000 per year.

“We wanted to avoid unnecessary costs and at the same time increase the level of maintenance of our buildings.

We chose Caverion because of their strength in this type of project, and the cooperation has worked very well, since we share a common goal with this project,” Petter Elfqvist at Mora Municipality says.

area Klockarhagen. The area included 10 rows of residential buildings with over 200 apartmenents.

“In only 15 months we changed the roofs on all the buildings. We also changed the ventilation and upgraded the isolation, which raised the overall quality for the residents and at the same time cut the client’s energy costs,” Urban says.

Poor lighting stopped broadcasting The project in Mora also included extensive work on the ice-hockey stadium FM-Mattson Arena, which seats 4,500 people.

“Before the renovations, some TV networks couldn’t broadcast from the stadium because of poor lighting. One of the first things we did was to change the 800 light sources. This improved the lighting to 1300 Lux, which is 300 over the required level,” Urban says.

Apart from new lighting, Caverion also changed the ceiling, improved the ventilation and implemented new fire safety measures.

Reduced yearly energy consumption by 30% In the Norwegian city Drammen, Caverion has a branch that specializes in energy efficiency and EPC. The 17 skilled employees there deliver their services to all of Norway.

In the municipality Skien, they reduced the yearly energy consumption with 30%. In only 18 months they completed almost 400 energy efficiency measures in 37 municipal buildings.

Projectmanager at Skien Municipality, Hans Petter Heimholt, is happy that the EPC project finally is going into phase three - where the harvest can begin.

“In phase one Caverion mapped how we can reduce our energy consumption, in phase two they implemented the measures, and now in phase three the energy consumption will finally begin.”

Head of the Eastern Europe division, Niclas Sacklén, says that you can feel the momentum growing amongst the 1,700 highly skilled employees working there.

the air; you can really feel the spirit of entrepreneur­ ship amongst the people. Everyone, including the apprentices, the craftsmen and the managers, are working together and are set on going forward, and further developing Caverion in their area.”

Niclas tells that his team from the five countries in Eastern Europe is proud to be part of the Caverion-brand.

“We are growing steadily, and now that we are harmonizing our brand and processes throughout all of the 12 Caverion-countries in Europe we can take better advantage of each other. As a big company we should copy with pride, instead of inventing the wheel again in each country. We have so many talented people here in Eastern Europe, but we also have a great deal we can learn from the other countries in Caverion – and vice versa. You miss a lot if you don’t work together cross borders.” Niclas also reveals what he thinks is the key to success – in any country.

Division Eastern Europe actually consist of five countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Russia (the latter consist of two separate units: Moscow and St. Petersburg).

Focus on safe infrastructure When you glance at a map of Europe, Austria may seem like a small country at the heart of the continent. With its 83,900 km2 it makes up less than 1% of the total area of Europe. But if you zoom in closer, a few details may come as a surprise. For example, a total of 8.5 million people live here, which statistically equals 102 inhabitants per square kilometre. The population density will increase, as the number of inhabitants is set to exceed the 9 million mark in 2025.

side from the population density, two other factors are characteristic of the country's overall infrastructure. Its location at the heart of Europe makes Austria a typical transit country and mountains account for up to 65% of its entire surface area. Expressed in figures, Austria is traversed by a 125,000 km road

network; some 140 tunnels with a total length of around 345 km have been built on its motorways. The major transit routes are used by around 250,000 passenger cars and 32,000 HGVs on a daily basis.

The daily volume of traffic places great demands on technical planning in the area of road construction and on tunnel installations in particular. For the

operator ASFINAG, the safety aspect is paramount in the construction of new roads and their ongoing modernisation.

In an emergency, tunnel safety is determined by a synergy of the road user's attentiveness and a rapid response time achieved by means of optimal technical safety solutions.

Safety through competence This is where Caverion steps in with its Tunnel Technology Competence Centre in Melk. Thanks to its high level of expertise, Caverion equips numerous Austrian tunnel installations with a technically sophisticated system comprising power distribution, safety technology, ventilation, lighting, traffic technology and process control engineering, thereby contributing significantly to road user safety.

Karl Ledermüller, Head of the Competence Centre, briefly outlines the task at hand: “The tunnel technology is a complex system which has to meet the most stringent safety requirements. It's not just about power distribution, ventilation, and a few lights for emergency call points. process control system as well as being managed and visualised through a process control centre such as the one in Ardning. We use our in-house software development for this purpose.”

Ensuring the shortest possible response times "If – taking Ardning as an example – an alarm is triggered in one of the 25 monitored tunnel installations because a car is driving too slowly, smoke has formed or someone has opened the doors to the emergency call bay," explains Project Manager Wallner, “a signal is sent to the control centre and the relevant video camera image is displayed on the large video wall. This makes it possible to view the incident immediately to ensure a rapid response time.”

Fire safety test: Nothing is left to chance One of the highlights during completion and acceptance by the customer is without doubt the performance of the fire safety test, which is required by law.

“In simulated fires with a fire load of approx. two megawatts, which is roughly equivalent to the collision of two HGVs,” explains Karl Ledermüller, “we check whether people located in the tunnel are able to rescue themselves.”

In this case, the system comprising automatic fire location detection and correct fan operation must function to perfection. As Karl Ledermüller emphasises, self-rescue is only possible if the fans keep the smoke on the tunnel ceiling at the flow velocity appropriate to the prevailing situation for a specific period and divert it to the outside in an orderly manner.

The test is considered to have been passed successfully if the fire has been detected within 90 seconds of its ignition and all the subsequent fire safety measures have been initiated by the automation programs.

“THE DETECTION AND RESPONSE TIME WAS UNDER A MINUTE” “The entire team is really tense before the fire safety test” says Karl Ledermüller. “People run through the processes in their minds again to make sure everything is in place, right up until the last second before the fire is ignited.”

The last fire safety test on the S6 was carried out on 21. April 2015. The de­tection and response time was under a minute. Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief – the test was passed successfully!

The offshore life During 2014, Karsten from Caverion in Denmark lived most of the year in intervals of two weeks on a production facility platform in the North Sea, and then three weeks at home with the family.

I

n 2015 the trips has been fewer, and even though Karsten Poder Sørensen appreciates his job and the life onboard a production platform, he does enjoy spending more time with his girlfriend and her two sons.

“I am very good at adapting, so it’s easy for me to change my routines back and forth from being offshore and at home with the family,” Karsten says.

A normal workday for Karsten includes tasks like debugging and maintenance of the transformers, and high voltage boards. Normally, the 30-year old works with either high- or medium voltage.

“A big part of the job offshore is preparation for the different tasks, as safety and planning are the most important factors when working on a platform. My tasks mainly take place in the boards or the transformer, where we perform ongoing maintenance with a time interval of 3-4 years,” Karsten explains.

100 work hours per week During the week, there are several highlights the offshore workers can enjoy on the platform.

Wednesday evenings there is freshly baked bread and hot chocolate, and Saturday evenings they eat sausages.

“Yes, that is something we look forward to,” says Karsten, with a smile.

At the platform he normally works around a hundred hours per week, leaving very little spare time. Still, he finds the time for spinning at the gym a couple of times per week, in addition to watching TV with his colleagues, or playing pool or table tennis.

“One day, back when I had just started working here, I was standing at the production platform thinking to myself: ‘What am I doing here?’ We usually joke about being like a captive in prison, but now I really enjoy this way of working,” Karsten says.

The hydropower plants are located in the Finnish Lapland where distances between different sites can be as much as 400 km – so it’s important that they bring all the equipment they will need to complete the job.

Divers at Caverion work in maximum depths of 50 meters, and the work is extremely physically demanding. This work is also carried out year round, which means that at its coldest, the water temperature is 0 °C.

They need to cut a hole in the ice to go underwater. Each dive is reported in detail, either in writing or on video.

Juuso wins Medal for Excellence at WorldSkills Championship JUUSO HIETA MIES, REFRIGER ATION

Juuso, whose main task in the competition was to beat the clock and build a refrigeration appliance within a set time, was part of a Finnish team made up of 37 professionals represent-

ing the very best in their chosen fields.

The Medal of Excellence was awarded to competitors whose scores exceeded 500 points, as they faced off against highly skilled individuals from around the globe.

“The whole trip was a great experience, and left me with a good feeling.

The Brazilians are happy and friendly people, overall, the event had a great atmosphere. We had to carry out our tasks at dedicated workstations in large halls with people watching our work close by. I really had to focus on what I was doing," Juuso says.

"I have received a lot of support.

Participating in a competition has given me new experiences and increased my resilience in everyday tasks," explains Juuso.

Norwegian Mats not happy about losing to Swedish colleague Jonas Norway was awarded the «Medal of Excellence» during WorldSkills and placed 9th with his 500 points.

Mats, who beat his Swedish crossborder colleague in a competition earlier this year, was not happy about ending up three spots below the Swede in WorldSkills.

“Jonas placed 6th and I placed 9th – so it was a close race. Still, I can live with him being able to lay cable better than me, when I’m better at everything else,” Mats says with a cheeky smile.

The Norwegian was overall very happy with his efforts, and now look forward to taking some much needed vacation.

Jonas Frölander, best in the Nordic countries Worldskills Competition took place in Sao Paulo, Jonas Frölander, electrician from Sweden, represented the Caverion colors in the event Information network cabling.

Despite a rough start on the competitions first day, Jonas managed to finish in 6th place. His strong results in the later stages of the competition also meant that he finished as the highest placed competitor from the Nordic countries in his event.

4 GET OUT! Physical activity comes in many forms – in mid-Norway (Nordmøre and Romsdal), Caverion co-workers get together and go for hikes outside during their lunch breaks – and sometimes also weekends. The hiking program is part of their local HSE-program and is called “GetOut!”

5 HOLMEKOLLEN-REL AY R ACE An entire 120 excited employees from Caverion Norway made up a total of eight teams to this year’s Holmenkollen-relay race in Oslo. Caverion people from all over Norway attended the relay race, which mixed young apprentices with soon pensioners, girls and boys, and quiet souls with the more vibrant. Together they made up an even better team - not only in the relay, but also on the job!

CAVERION IN SWEDEN AND FINL AND

The twenty-five cyclist strong Caverion Cycling Team, with colleagues from Sweden and Finland, participated in the 700 kilometer-long race Cycle for Change in the beginning of August this year. It took the team 22.5 hours to complete – 1.5 hours less than their pre-set goal! Well done guys!

6 307 RUNNERS, 6 CITIES, ONE EVENT For the second time Caverion Germany organized the Caverion City Trail Run. The occasion was the second anniversary of the demerger from YIT, the birthday of Caverion. More than 300 participants followed our invitation and ran in six different German cities.

Caverion’s common Group Safety Guideline and Ground Rules are now ready!

The Caverion-wide Safety Guideline and Ground Rules are now ready to be launched in all Caverion countries. To ensure we have one common way of working with safety, all countries have been involved. The Group Guideline is the framework for all the safety work we will do, and the Caverion Safety Ground Rules are actual instructions for how we perform our daily work. Both the guidelines and the ground rules will help us work in a safe way and minimise safety risks.

ork safety requires everyone’s attention every day and everywhere.

No-one should get injured at work.

Well-managed safety work will also ensure we’re not causing delays or risks to our clients’ business.

“This is the first time in Caverion that we have created common safety guidelines and ground rules, which explain what we mean by “work safety” in our company. Many of our stakeholders such as investors, clients and employees, expect us to act as one Caverion - with excellence in safety,” says Merja Eskola, Head of Group Human Resources and the process owner of Secure Health and Safe Workplace.

Merja continues: “We are now a step ahead in showing that we act as one company in safety matters. This means that we lead and develop safety together, with focus on proactive measures.”

Since the cross-country project team kicked off its safety project in April 2015, they have carefully gone through many processes and safety practices. One of their most important objectives was to create a common view of Caverion work safety, and to share and implement the best practices between the countries.

Identify hazards before starting to work – follow the appropriate safety instructions.

Check for any loose objects that could fall into the working area before starting work.

Check tools, protective equipment, and any other devices, before use.

Take appropriate precautions to prevent environmental incidents.

Use appropriate personal protective equipment.

Ensure that breathing air is accessible when working in confined spaces and contaminated areas.

Follow lock and tag procedures.

Keep the work environment clean and tidy.

Ensure that proper safety measures are in place to prevent falls when working at height.

Be accountable for safety and take care of each other.

Work safety requires everyone’s attention every day and every­ where. No-one should get injured at work.

Now the project team continues its work on implementation of the recently established “Caverion Way of Working with Safety”. This means that they support local safety communications and continue sharing the agreed best practices, to further develop the safety work. Later on during this year, the team will confirm the common key performance indicators (KPIs) and reporting. The Caverion Group Safety Guideline and the Ground Rules create a foundation for a common way of working and complement country specific safety instructions. Each country may specify more detailed safety instructions according to their country’s regulations, and explicit work.

Like a boa constrictor, the bare, sweaty and very muscular arm of a bodybuilder wrapped itself around his neck ...

Turfed out Peter Korn, Munich, Germany with a patch of grass that hadn’t been cut for far too long. Peter Korn – a long-standing Caverion employee in Munich with a managerial role in facility services – decided to document the situation and pass the evidence on to the colleagues responsible. With this in mind, he picked up his camera, put on a waterproof jacket and set off. When he arrived at the property, he pulled his hood down low over his face to keep out the increasingly heavy rain. He made sure his camera was ready and got into position.

Peter Korn was still concentrating on the rampant grass when suddenly, out of nowhere, something started choking him. Like a boa constrictor, the bare, sweaty and very muscular arm of a bodybuilder wrapped itself around his neck, while a second assailant tore the camera out of his hand. As if that wasn’t enough, a third man started shouting cryptic instructions at him.

The subsequent police report stated that three middle-aged bodybuilders had spotted a strange, half-masked figure that seemed to be pointing a camera at the fitness studio.

The three decided to take action, rushed out of the weights room and took the suspect “into custody” until a police patrol car arrived at the scene and was able to clarify the situation.

We do not know whether Peter Korn and his assailants are now friends, but the grass has definitely been cut.

IT A LL STA RTED

Outstanding service Electrician Niels-Chr. Outzen, Kolding, Denmark call from our good customer TAS in Kolding, who had problems with their cranes. It turned out we needed to change some defective slip rings and cable brackets on the cranes. To limit the unproductiveness for the client, we had to act fast. We contacted our colleagues in the crane service division on Lindø, and together we managed to find a solution. In consultation with Lindø, we sent a representative to Copenhagen to pick up new parts for the cranes. It’s just over a couple of hours each way, so we immediately drove to Copenhagen.

Six hours later the crane worked smoothly again, as our employee had been in Copenhagen to pick up spare parts, which was mounted immediately and the client could literally get back to business. TAS was very satisfied with our effort." " WE GOT A
