RANCHES THE COW FACTORIES

would like to introduce you to The Herd Book of Cavender Cow Families. We wanted to share a little about our philosophy in building our cow herd at Cavender Ranches and our approach to building better Brangus cattle. At Cavender Ranches, we are consumers of our own genetics. We continue to run our commercial operation marketing replacement females at our two annual sales and feeding/harvesting our steers and non-replacement quality females. We are not a boutique registered outfit, but rather a performanceoriented, commercially-driven seedstock supplier. Our goal is not to sell a few high dollar bulls and females each year but rather to have a lot of successful cattlemen that count on us year after year to continually improve our seedstock and in turn improve their cowherds and bottom lines.
Our goal at Cavender Ranches is to produce functional cattle with eye appeal and carcass value. We want enough ear and phenotype in our bulls to produce high demand Brangus commercial females who are environmentally suited for a wide cross section of our country. We are aware there are some herds and regions that need a little less ear while others may need to reduce frame and add thickness. We aspire to offer a variety of type and kind while maintaining consistency and uniformity in performance and quality throughout our bull offering.
With this challenge in mind, over the last 12 years we have built a foundation Angus herd with the intent of creating new bloodlines to add more carcass value into the Brangus purebred population. We like to start with a UB1 that has a Brangus look. We began choosing to use what we thought
Wewere the best Brangus bulls in the breed while also selecting sires that were looser made. As we progressed, we tried to choose Brangus sires that were complimentary to our UB1 females to continue a path toward UB2 and Brangus. We focused on EPDs, underlines and breed character as we made future mating choices. Our end product goal and vision has been to have “best of breed” EPDs and multi-trait leading genetics in a balanced package. We have seen tremendous uniformity and consistency in our new Brangus breed up cattle. In combination with great EPDs we also want eye appealing cattle with enough ear and adequate, but not excessive, underlines which are often discounted in both the purebred and commercial marketplace. We strive to produce moderate framed, functional cattle that can maintain their flesh in real-world situations while gaining in the feedyard and grading at harvest. We want cattle from our program to excel when compared to other breeds, regardless of the yardstick used to measure them.
Our traditional Brangus cowherd features many of the breed’s leading cow families including 541, 415, 468, 75, 117, 2, 63, 99, 406, 561, 803 and 924. We have infused many of our new Brangus herd sires into our traditional cow families providing a boost in their EPD profile where needed, either growth, carcass or birthweight. Sometimes, one cross totally changes an EPD profile and will allow much greater flexibility in the subsequent matings, allowing the incorporation of fresh new herd sires. Through this disciplined approach we will continue our pursuit of better cattle.
We hope you enjoy this look at our cow herd and hope it gives you insight to where we are going in our breeding program.
Sincerely,

Wetook a little different approach as we continued to build our cow herd. We dedicated resources to owning some of the best, real-world, functional Angus females we could afford. We selected females that would complement the herd bull battery we had available. We felt that being a maternal breed with carcass, it would be more advantageous to infuse our foundation with great maternal genetics. We selected females to fit our environment and capable of making good bulls. We selected Angus females from many of the prominent cow families in the Angus world, from breeders we respect.
We purchased Cox Miss Lucy 4D79 Reg: EA18083172 from Spruce Mountain Ranch in the fall of 2016. We entered her into embryo transfer and flushed her to Three D, CB Power Pack 75E7 and CB Capital Gain
924D19. Her son, CB Capital Gain
4D79H10 is working in the Traves Armstrong herd in Oklahoma. She produced four full sibs to 4D79H10 by Capital Gain, one of which, 4D79G6, made it to our donor program after producing a $7,500 son by Tradition in her first calf.
We have 10 daughters and granddaughters active in the herd and she has generated over $44,000 in progeny sales.
Our 97 cow family began with the purchase of SQ Rita 810 97S in the spring of 2007 and through her Angus daughter CR MS liberty 97Z from the fall of 2013. G A R Precision 810 was a famous daughter of the multi-million dollar producer G A R Ext 614 donor at Deer Valley Farm. They stem from the foundation Rita 5H11 of 1B14 Rito 9J9 who was the base of the Rita family at Gardiner Angus Ranch.
We flushed 97S to Hombre, producing 6 daughters from that mating, flushing one and from 97Z we produced 97H6, currently in our donor program. We now have ten 97 cow family members in the herd.
We purchased 44 Ruby X103 Reg: EA16647245 in Spring of 2012 from Suzie Q Angus in Texas. She is a direct daughter of the foundation Ruby 9114 who was a multi-million dollar producer for 44 Farms. She was purchased by Chimney Rock Cattle Co in the spring of 2017 after generating over $66,000 in sales revenue and producing our 103D, 103D8 and 103F3 donors. 103F3 was purchased by Ron Clough in the spring of 2023 and we have calves on the ground by Blount and Big Town with more coming in the fall of 2023 by McQueen. There are three granddaughters of X103 being flushed sired by Wrangler and Prime Cut and they are spectacular in their progeny proofs. We have 50 daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughters of this good 103X donor in the herd with the count growing.

We purchased Miss Crazy K Blackcap 4036 EA17739744 in the spring of 2014 from Crazy K in Tennessee. We numbered her 817B in our herd and she was very productive. The Blackcap has been a dominant carcass family for generations. G A R Precision 706 came from a flush that produced five bulls that all went to major studs and is a granddaughter of G A R Scotch Cap 867, the foundation of the Blackcap family. 817B produced seven daughters still active in the herd and we have flushed four of her daughters sired by CB Three D 468C8. One of those full sisters, CB MS Three D-C8 817F4, is the dam of the $70,000 CB New Standard 817J3 who we own with Triple T. We sold one of those four donors in the spring of 2022, 817F7, and she was purchased by East Texas Cattle. There are 56 active females in our herd who trace their lineage back to the 817B cow. 817B amassed over $113,000 in progeny sales in our program.

With over 25 years of breeding Brangus cattle, we continue to emphasize sound, functional cattle capable of producing top end range bulls in volume. We continue to push the envelope in performance while maintaining a handle on cow size. We remain a consumer of our own bulls for our commercial herd, allowing us to benchmark our product within the industry both in terms of feedlot and carcass performance and replacement females sold commercially in our sales and as replacements for our herd.
The Brangus Foundation cow families represented in our registered herd have stood the test of time and we will continue to propagate the elite genetics they represent.
The 2 cow family began at Cavender Ranches in the fall of 1996 when we purchased MS Brinks Mailman 2D7. She was out of a first-generation cow from the Connealy Angus Ranch herd. We AI’d her multiple times to MR Townsend-Lucky-13/7, who we owned at the time. The most prolific daughter from that mating was CB MS Lucky 2L. She is the granddam of CB MS Passport 2B, the $17,500 choice of Clover Ranch in the 2015 Ideal Video Customer Appreciation Sale in Houston. 2L is also the dam of CB MS BT 2U, the granddam of the $15,000 CB Cowboy 2H2 who sold to our friend David Cannon in the fall of 2021.
