Welcome to Lord Botetourt High School, home of the CAVALIERS! We appreciate each of you being here today as part of the 23rd Annual Cavalier Classic. We are excited to have the schools represented here today and know you will do a fantastic job. We know each band has worked very hard and has committed your time and talents in making your respective school and community a better place.

Welcome to Lord Botetourt High School and the 23rd Annual Cavalier Classic. We are very excited to host bands from all over the Southside, Central and the Highlands of Virginia and even Tennessee, and look forward to sharing with you a great day of music, competition and good sportsmanship!

Each band participating in today’s competition has worked hard to put on the best show possible. We ask all audience members and band members to show support and encourage all the bands today. One of the most wonderful aspects about marching competitions is the tradition of bands supporting other bands, even those they compete against. Please help to keep the tradition of good-spirited competition alive.

Adjudication Team

Marching: Uley Daniels Mr. Uley Daniels is currently an assistant band director at E.B. Stanley Middle School and teaches privately in the Washington County area. He is a graduate of Grundy Senior High School and attended East Tennessee State University where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1981. Mr. Daniels taught band and chorus at Garden High School for five years before moving to teach instrumental music at Holston High School for thirty years. The school band programs under his direction have received excellent and superior ratings at Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina Festivals, as well as being awarded thirteen Virginia Honor Band awards. His groups have marched in the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Disney’s Magical Music Days Parade, and in Sea World. Uley Daniels has served as the District VII Secretary and served as the host for the area Solo and Ensemble Festival for several years. He has judged both Marching Band and Concert Band Festivals throughout the state and served as a guest clinician in Virginia and Tennessee. He has been recognized as teacher of the year by the High School and the Washington County School Board. He was selected as the Virginia Music Educator of the Year in 2015. Mr. Daniels has performed with the Johnson City Symphony and the Wythe County Community Band and is currently playing trombone with the Winds of the Mountain Empire and the Stateline Wind Symphony. Uley Daniels lives in Abingdon, Virginia with his wife Elaine.

Music: Harry Farmer Mr. Harry Farmer hails from Princeton, West Virginia and was educated in the Mercer County Public School system. He received his Bachelor of Music from West Virginia University in 1996 and his Master of Music with an emphasis in music education from George Mason University in 2009. He has done additional coursework at Illinois State University and James Madison University. In 1995, his saxophone quartet was a Young Artist Award winner at WVU. That summer he played in the “Untouchables Band” at Paramount’s King’s Dominion. He has also performed in the West Virginia University Wind and Jazz Ensembles, the Bluefield State College Jazz Band, the Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra and the Lynchburg College Wind Symphony and Jazz Band. He continues to perform with many local ensembles. From 1996-2015, Mr. Farmer was the Director of Bands at Forest Middle School. During that time he generated staggering growth in the FMS band program, going from approximately one hundred-fifty students to over four hundred. After Mr. Farmer’s tenure at FMS, he became the Director of Bands at Buford Middle School in Charlottesville, Va. The enrollment in bands classes went from seventy-five students to over one hundred thirty during his two years there (20152017). Currently, Mr. Farmer is in his third year as Director of Bands at Blacksburg Middle School in Blacksburg, Va. The Blacksburg Middle School Symphonic Band, under Mr. Farmer’s direction, has been selected to perform at the 2019 VMEA Conference at The Homestead. Bands under the direction of Mr. Farmer have earned consistent superior ratings at the VBODA Concert Assessment. In November of 2013, the Forest Middle Symphonic Band, under Mr. Farmer’s direction, had the honor of being selected to perform at the VMEA Conference at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. which is the highest honor a middle school band program can receive in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mr. Farmer has been recognized by VBODA and has a Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association for outstanding contributions to the Forest Middle School band program. He is also listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Mr. Farmer was voted the “Top Teacher” in Lynchburg Living magazine’s inaugural teacher awards issue for the 2014-15 school year. From 2003-2015 he also taught applied saxophone, applied clarinet, jazz ensemble, woodwind methods, brass methods and saxophone quartet as adjunct faculty at Lynchburg College and Randolph College. Mr. Farmer has served as a clinician and judge throughout Virginia and West Virginia and currently serves on the VBODA Music Grading Committee. Mr. Farmer and his wife Lesley live in Christiansburg, Va. They have two sons--Sam, age 12 and Keaton, age 6.

General Effect: Jason Minnix Mr. Jason Minnix is a native of Southwest Virginia. He has been involved in the marching arts and served as an educator, adjudicator and clinician across the country for almost 20 years. He received his music degree from DePaul University in Chicago, IL, and currently resides and teaches in Asheville, NC with his lovely wife, Brandy. He also works for the Asheville Symphony Orchestra Guild as a teaching artist through Asheville MusicWorks, an “El Sistema” program that targets music education and performance to children beginning at the age of 4 years old. Jason owns and operates guardmusic.com, where he works with numerous marching, winterguard, choral and percussion ensembles. His affiliations include DCI, Bands Of America, USBands, WGI, and 17 state adjudication panels. Jason will never forget his influences deeply rooted right here locally here in the Roanoke Valley.

Adjudication Team

Drum Major: Mark Whitfield Mark Whitfield is a trombonist and educator from New Bern, North Carolina. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and a Master’s Degree in Trombone Performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He recently completed doctoral coursework in Trombone Performance and Pedagogy at The University of Southern Mississippi, where he served as the trombone studio graduate assistant. Mark is currently the principal trombonist of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. In the summer of 2016, Mark served as Music Manager for Mason Entertainment Group’s newest production Blast! The Music of Disney. He also performed in the cast on trombone and euphonium during a short tour of Japan. Mark was a member of the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps from 2005-2009, serving as Drum Major from 2007-2009. In 2009, he was awarded third place for the Jim Jones Leadership Award, and the drum corps was awarded its first- ever silver medal at the Drum Corps International World Championships. Mark has performed with a variety of artists and ensembles, including symphony orchestras in both North Carolina and Mississippi, the North Carolina Wind Orchestra, The Wilmington and Andrew Thielen Big Bands, The North Carolina Brass Band, Jeff Coffin, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, Allen Vizzutti, and the Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus Band. Most recently, he performed with 8-time CMA “Musician of the Year” Mac McAnally and the Coral Reefer Band. Mark was also a member of the orchestra on McAnally’s most recent Mailboat Records album, Southbound. Mark currently resides in his hometown of New Bern, where he is finishing his dissertation and teaching at Havelock Middle School.

Percussion: Bob Ballengee Mr. Bob Ballengee is currently the band director at Damascus Middle School and Glade Spring Middle School in Washington County Virginia. He is also the percussion arranger for Holston High School, Abingdon High School, Chilhowie High School, Virginia High School, Tennessee High School, Richlands High School, Patrick Henry High School as well as the Emory and Henry college marching band . Bob has many years of drum corps experience performing and teaching. He was a member of the Bluecoats and was the program/staff coordinator for the Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Ballengee is an active arranger, clinician, and judge working with groups from Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, and West Virginia. He is an active performer as well playing in several performing groups including rock bands, jazz bands, country bands, and wind ensembles. Bob currently resides in Marion, VA with his wife Candy and three children Christina, Ashley, and Tyler.

Color Guard: Ahsia “Spence” Spencer Mr. Ahsia “Spence” Spencer was born in Martinsville, Virginia where he started colorguard in high school at Fieldale-Collinsville High School in Collinsville, Virginia.

Right after graduation, he joined the United States Army as a clarinet player and proudly serves as drum major and clarinet section leader with the 29th Infantry Division Band in Troutville, Virginia. In conjunction with his military service, he has marched with and taught many programs in Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. In 2009 – 2011, he marched with Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps (2011 Class A top colorguard, 2012 Class A Champions) and in 2012, he marched with Cadets2 where he served as weapon captain and earned the award of “Cadet of the Year”. In the indoor realm, he marched with Impact Winterguard (WGI A class gold medalists) in 2009 and Assembly Line Winterguard from 2010 – 2012. When it comes to colorguard education, he started teaching colorguard in Virginia in 2008 with New Kent High School. From there he taught at Varina High School in 2009 – 2010, Hampton High School 2010 and Indian River High School (USBands Virginia Class 2 Open State Champion) where he was the band director and guard instructor 2011-2013. In 2013, Spence moved to Madisonville, Tennessee where he was guard instructor for Sequoyah High School from 2013-2015. In 2014, he moved to Knoxville where he currently teaches general music at Sarah Moore Greene Elementary School and is the guard instructor/assistant band director at Austin-East High School. Most recently, Spence served as clinician for SpinFest with CIPA and judge for the CIPA circuit. When Spence is not busy with colorguard or his career, he is a group fitness instructor and he serves as librarian/ Social Media moderator, and principal clarinet with Scruffy City Orchestra in Knoxville, Tennessee.

2019 Cavalier Classic Band Hosts Holly Acker

4th-Year Member of LBHS Marching Cavaliers, Section: Pit (vibraphone, marimba & keyboard) What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier? The most rewarding feeling is at the end of the season when we put on our best performance, and we all know it even before Caldwell tells us. In that moment, all of the hard work pays off.

I’d like to thank Mr. Caldwell & Mr. Lawson, Emma Leonard (AKA the best pit mom), my section, and all of the other friends I’ve made in band for making this such an enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

5th-Year Member of LBHS Marching Cavaliers, Section: Flute What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier? The best thing about marching band is being able to grow and improve with each other over time and build anything from scratch.

I wanna say thank you to my family for always being there and supporting through anything. I also wanna thank my amazing friends, my whalehum, and many others for this amazing journey for the past five years.

I’m incredibly proud of this band and will continue to support it like it has for me. I can’t wait to see how much they will achieve in the future.

Hannah Deter

4th-Year Member of LBHS Marching Cavaliers, Section: Clarinet What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier? Being a Marching Cavalier has been extremely rewarding. The feeling you get when you walk on that field is pretty amazing; part butterflies in your stomach, part proud to be wearing that uniform and representing your school, and a whole lot of ready to give that performance your all. Even better is the feeling after you know the band’s had an awesome show, with the crowd cheering and everyone in the band smiling and high-fiving each other after the show. In that moment, we all feel proud of ourselves, and that all the “reset!” ‘s, “one more time!” ‘s, and “set-by-sets!” ‘s were all well worth being in the hot sun for hours on end. Additionally, the friends I’ve made are a huge part of why I’ve loved being a Marching Cavalier. I’ve become close with a lot of them, some of them have already graduated and some are still here, and I wouldn’t trade that for the world. I definitely couldn’t ask for anyone better to tell me to use my outside voice, to make fun of my habit of talking to myself, and to give me a nickname after mispronouncing one composer’s name on a piece of music.

I’d first like to thank my parents and my younger sister, Hailey, for always supporting me both through high school and marching band. They’ve come to tons of games and competitions, and I’ve loved having Hailey occasionally cheer me on from the stands right before the show starts, my Mom giving me feedback that may or may not have been littered with funny comments to tease me, and seeing my Dad having fun zooming around in a golf cart all day for the Cavalier Classic. In addition, I’d like to thank all the people who really help make the show happen, and that would be Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Lawson, Mr. and Mrs. Graham, the pit dads, the band moms, and anyone else that’s helped the band out during practices, games, competitions, and the Cav Classic. Without you, our band wouldn’t be as amazing and truly as great as we are and I know we’re all thankful to have all of you around.

4th-Year Member of LBHS Marching Cavaliers, Section: Mellophone (former Trumpet) What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier? Everyone in the band is different. Each person has their own story, their own problems, their own life. To be able to see all of them, regardless of race or gender or social status, work together towards a common goal is unbelievable! This feeling of unity will forever shape my life and my relationships with others.

Many thanks to all of those who have helped me survive my high school experience! All glory to God for helping me push through the sunshine and the rain. Shout out to my parents for putting up with me through the years and all the late nights they stayed up waiting for me. The time with everyone has been wonderful and I have learned a lot. Each football game and competition has brought every one of us closer. Each show brings a new emotion that can only be felt with band. I will always be thankful for what it has taught me.

The thing that has been most rewarding to me has been seeing myself and everyone else grow as players and people.
