Welcome to Lord Botetourt High School, home of the Cavaliers! We appreciate your attendance at this year’s Cavalier Classic. We are grateful to host an event in which students can showcase their hard work and skill and are excited to see each band’s performance. If we can help or assist you in any way, please do not hesitate to ask. We hope you have a wonderful day and wish you luck throughout the remainder of the competition season and school year.

Welcome to Lord Botetourt High School and the 24th Annual Cavalier Classic. We are very excited to host bands from all over Southside and Central Virginia, and look forward to sharing with you a great day of music, competition and good sportsmanship!

Each band participating in today’s competition has worked hard to put on the best show possible. We ask all audience members and band members to show support and encourage all the bands today. One of the most wonderful aspects about marching competitions is the tradition of bands supporting other bands, even those they compete against. Please help to keep the tradition of good-spirited competition alive.

Adjudication Team Marching: Uley Daniels Uley Daniels is currently an assistant band director at E.B. Stanley Middle School and teaches privately in the Washington County area. He is a graduate of Grundy Senior High School and attended East Tennessee State University where he earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree in 1981. Mr. Daniels taught band and chorus at Garden High School for five years before moving to teach instrumental music at Holston High School for thirty years. The school band programs under his direction have received excellent and superior ratings at Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina Festivals, as well as being awarded thirteen Virginia Honor Band awards. His groups have marched in the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Disney’s Magical Music Days Parade, and in Sea World. Uley Daniels has served as the District VII Secretary and served as the host for the area Solo and Ensemble Festival for several years. He has judged both Marching Band and Concert Band Festivals throughout the state and served as a guest clinician in Virginia and Tennessee. He has been recognized as teacher of the year by the High School and the Washington County School Board. He was selected as the Virginia Music Educator of the Year in 2015. Mr. Daniels has performed with the Johnson City Symphony and the Wythe County Community Band and is currently playing trombone with the Winds of the Mountain Empire and the Stateline Wind Symphony. Uley Daniels lives in Abingdon, Virginia with his wife Elaine.

Music: Harry Farmer Harry Farmer hails from Princeton, West Virginia and was educated in the Mercer County Public School system. He received his Bachelor of Music from West Virginia University in 1996 and his Master of Music with an emphasis in music education from George Mason University in 2009. He has done additional coursework at Illinois State University and James Madison University. Mr. Farmer is currently working on his Educational Leadership Endorsement through Radford University. From 1996-2015, Mr. Farmer was the Director of Bands at Forest Middle School. During that time he generated staggering growth in the FMS band program, going from approximately one hundred-fifty students to over four hundred. After Mr. Farmer’s tenure at FMS, he became the Director of Bands at Buford Middle School in Charlottesville, Va. The enrollment in bands classes went from seventy-five students to over one hundred thirty during his two years there (2015-2017). Currently, Mr. Farmer is in his fifth year as Director of Bands at Blacksburg Middle School in Blacksburg, Va. Bands under the direction of Mr. Farmer have earned consistent superior ratings at the VBODA Concert Assessment. In November of 2013 and November of 2019, the Forest Middle Symphonic Band and the Blacksburg Middle Symphonic Band, under Mr. Farmer’s direction, had the honor of being selected to perform at the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) Conference at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. which is the highest honor a middle school band program can receive in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mr. Farmer has been recognized by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) and has a Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association for outstanding contributions to the Forest Middle School band program. He is also listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Mr. Farmer was voted the “Top Teacher” in Lynchburg Living magazine’s inaugural teacher awards issue for the 2014-15 school year. From 2003-2015 he also taught applied saxophone, applied clarinet, jazz ensemble, woodwind methods, brass methods and saxophone quartet as adjunct faculty at Lynchburg College and Randolph College. Mr. Farmer has served as a clinician and judge throughout Virginia and West Virginia and currently serves on the VBODA Music Grading Committee. Mr. Farmer and his wife Lesley live in Riner, Va. They have two sons--Sam, age 14 and Keaton, age 8.

General Effect: Ahsia Spencer Ahsia was born in Martinsville, Virginia where he started band at Carver Middle School in Martinsville, Virginia under Ms. Bennie Marshall. He later went on to Fieldale-Collinsville High School in Collinsville, Virginia where he participated in the marching band, winterguard, and indoor drumline under, the late, Mr. C. Bonnell Young . Right after graduation, he joined the United States Army as a clarinet player and proudly serves as drum major and clarinet

Adjudication Team section leader with the 29th Infantry Division Band in Troutville, Virginia. In conjunction with his military service, he has marched and taught many programs throughout Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama. In 2009 – 2011, he marched with Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps (2010 Class A best colorguard, 2011 Class A Champions) and in 2012, he marched with Cadets2 where he served as weapon captain. As far as indoor is concerned, he marched with Impact Winterguard (WGI A class gold medalists) in 2009 and Assembly Line Winterguard from 2010 – 2011. When it comes to colorguard education, he started teaching colorguard in Virginia in 2008 with New Kent High School. From there he taught at Varina High School in 2009 – 2010, Hampton High School 2010 and Indian River High School (USBands Virginia Class 2 Open State Champion) where he was the band director and guard instructor 2011-2013. In 2013, he moved to Knoxville where he currently teaches Band at Vine Middle Magnet School in Knoxville, Tennessee and is the Assistant band director at Austin-East High School. When Ahsia is not busy with marching band or teaching, he serves as Librarian and clarinet player with Scruffy Orchestra in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Drum Major: Rick South Rick South comes to The Cavalier Classic with 30+ years of marching band, color guard, winter guard and show concept and design experience, and judging for the past 20 years at contests in VA, TN, NC, and SC. He began his instructing career just 2 weeks after graduating high school with the Mid-Atlantic Band Front Camps for the Drum Majors’ Camp. From there he instructed schools in VA, TN, and NC in marching and maneuvering, visual, drum majors, color guard, and winter guard. During his instructing career, he has instructed, and designed for BOA Regional Champions, the Fieldale-Collinsville Marching Cavaliers. Other accomplishments have been multiple Bands of the Day, Guards of the Day, Best M&M, Best Visual and Best G.E. Schools instructed include Abingdon HS, Patrick Henry HS, John S. Battle HS, Virginia HS, Fieldale-Collinsville HS, Magna Vista HS, Floyd County HS, Marion SR HS, Sullivan Central HS, Sequoyah HS, Bradley Central HS, Ashe Co. HS, and Shelby HS. Mr South was also involved with the Volunteers Drum & Bugle Corps (Division 3) as Marching and Maneuvering Instructor and Visual Staff Member. Rick currently lives in Bristol, VA. with his dog Scout and is an Account Coordinator for Hapco Pole Products in Abingdon, VA.

Percussion: Charlie Nesmith Charlie Nesmith is a music educator, percussionist, and host of The Flying Baton Podcast. He has been an educator for 15 years in the Virginia Public School System. Currently, he is one of two band teachers at Shelburne Middle School in Staunton, Virginia. During his time there, he has founded the Woodwind Ensemble, an extensive free after-school lesson program, an annual Halloween Concert, and an annual Band Banquet performance where students show off their solo and ensemble skills in a banquet fundraiser setting. For the last four times the Shelburne Middle School Band has participated in the Kings Dominion Festival of Music and received 3 Grand Champion Awards. They have also attended the VBODA Band Assessment for the last 4 years where they have earned superior ratings. Charlie has served as the Principal Percussionist with the Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Peter Wilson for the last 6 years. He is a founding member of the Valley Wind Ensemble from Harrisonburg, VA.Charlie also marched in the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps.

Color Guard: Cara Taylor Cara Taylor is from Salem, Va where she lives with her husband and three children. She began her dance career at a young age with baton and ballet which developed into a love for color guard. She marched for 3 years with Carolina Crown while teaching several schools in Northeast Tennessee as well as Southwest and Central Virginia. She has enjoyed the opportunity to judge color guards in various states and is looking forward to seeing each school’s hard work today! Cara has a MS in Counseling for Addiction and Recovery along with a B.S. in Psychology and Christian Counseling with a minor in Special Education from Liberty University. She is the Director of Local Missions and Outreach at Fellowship Community Church where she enjoys serving the Roanoke Valley and reaching those who are in need in various ways, designing and implementing community outreach programs, and organizing service projects.

Cavalier Classic Announcer Heather Simmons Heather Simmons is a retired educator from Botetourt County, having worked for 31 years as a secondary English teacher and Instructional coach. She and her husband Dallas were avid band parents and supporters while their children were involved in the music programs in Botetourt. She holds no major titles, has no major awards, and possesses no marketable skills. But she does talk. A lot.

Awards This year’s Cavalier Classic will have two award presentations. One will occur for A and AA class groups after the last band in the AA Competition Group 2 has performed. The second award presentation for AAA and AAAA will occur after the Lord Botetourt’s Exhibition Performance. First, second, and third place trophies will be awarded in the following areas: Class Music Marching General Effect Percussion Color Guard Drum Major A Grand Champion will be awarded for Class A & AA and Class AAA and AAAA.

When the county was first established in 1770, the boundaries stretched from present day Botetourt County west beyond the Mississippi River and north to Lake Michigan. The Marching Cavalier's show, "Where I Call Home", was commissioned as a tribute to the county and its 250th Anniversary. The show uses familiar musical themes and well known images from the area to help create a mood that reminds us of "home".

Cavalier Classic Senior Hosts Jillian Davis Section & Instrument: Baritone, Tenor Bass, Trombone Years in Band: 2 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

Knowing that even with a broken bone, I can play a whole new instrument, march a different style, and still have time to help others.

Personal Message: I thank my family for always supporting my musical endeavors, and I thank my friends for keeping me sane.

Keely Fouch Section & Instrument: Clarinet Years in Band: 4 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

The most rewarding part of band is the opportunity to help the younger players.

Getting them excited to play and go to games and perform our show. Watching them get so happy after a great show is the best feeling, knowing that so many people put so much effort into it. Out of all four years I’ve been playing I don’t think there is any other team I’d want to be a part of.

Personal Message: I’d like to thank everyone who supported me and came to the performances. I’d most importantly like to thank my older brother who really got me into band. He was in band two years before me and ever since then I knew I loved it. It has actually felt like 6 years and I don’t know what to do next. I’d also like to thank my section out of all four years, we went through so much. We have lost and gained people but the one person who was there through it all and never left -- Sarah Hamblin. She never left my side through it all. If I didn’t have her, I don’t know where I’d be in band. We have become best friends and shared so much. You are my best friend, sister, co-leader, and no one could ever compare. Yes, we hated each other in the beginning, but you are my forever favorite clarinet. And shout out to my section. I love you all.

Cavalier Classic Senior Hosts Nick Fox Section & Instrument: Trumpet Years in Band: 4 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

The most rewarding part of band has got to be the friends I’ve made along the way. I wouldn’t trade the experience I have had with all of you for the world. I have watched my peers grow from goofballs to goofball leaders, and I couldn’t be more proud.

Personal Message: I would first like to thank my mom, brother and sister for making it to as many games and competitions as possible to support me. Next, to the people on the field with me pushing to get better. Last but not least, to the people making the magic happen behind the scenes: Mr. Caldwell, Mr. Lawson, Ms. Graham, Sierra, and Mr. Rose. Thank you all for a fantastic 4 years. I’m gonna miss it a lot.

Sophia Graham Section & Instrument: Drum Major, Trumpet Years in Band: 4 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

The band is my second family. We laugh together and cry together. My friendship bonds I have made are like no other. We have learned that hard work pays off and we can accomplish anything as a team. I feel privileged to be part of such an amazing group.

Personal Message: Thanks to Mr. Caldwell and Mr. Lawson for guiding and teaching us these years and for instilling the love of music in each of us. Thank you to my family for car rides, celebrating weme and cheering me on. You are always there for me and I love you. Thank you to my friends, you are my biggest support system and I love all the memories we share.

Cavalier Classic Senior Hosts Sarah Hamblin Section & Instrument: Clarinet Years in Band: 4 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

When the show finally comes together after weeks/months of hard work. It’s so difficult but so much fun to perform with friends at games and competitions. I’ve made so many friends over these four years, even people I once hated. The memories I’ve made here I’ll cherish forever.

Personal Message: Thank you to my parents who drove me to practices nearly every day and put up with the horrific sounds that came from me practicing my clarinet. Thank you also to my friends who made marching band fun and the former seniors who taught me so much and encouraged me to continue with the band. I’m so glad I did. I want to specifically say thank you to my fellow senior Keely, who’s been helping me since day one. To a great leader and a great friend, love you.

Cavalier Classic Senior Hosts Clay Houston Section & Instrument: Drumline/Pit Drum Set, Tenors Years in Band: 5 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

The most rewarding experience is growing as an individual socially and musically. Starting band in 8th grade helped give me a headstart for transitioning to high school and felt more comfortable because of the friends I had made. My band friends have become like family.

Personal Message: A big thank you to Mr. Rose for always pushing me to do better than my best.

Thank you to Mr. Caldwell for helping me grow these past 5 years in knowledge, confidence and as a person. Most of all, I am thankful for my supportive family who are my biggest cheerleaders.

Elizabeth Leonard Section & Instrument: Flute Years in Band: 4 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

Hearing the crowd cheer as we pour onto the field has to be one of the best feelings, next to achieving and celebrating together as a family. When we find our reason for being in the band and we use that passion to put our hearts into the show and connect as a whole, it’s a completely different experience than ever before. We learn not to be better than others, but to be the best we can be. We may have our differences, but at the end of the day, I know we all have each other’s backs. I made my closest friends through this band, and I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for them.

Personal Message: Many people have helped me through high school as a band member. I thank everyone who has crossed paths with me, but especially the ones who went out of their way to help me grow as a person. Thank you to my parents for supporting both me and the whole band. Your presence means a lot to me. I also of course have an enormous amount of respect for Mr. Caldwell, an amazing role model not only for me, but everyone who knows him. Also, a hat tip to my sister, Grace, for inspiring and encouraging me to join marching band. I wouldn’t be in my 4th year of marching band right now if you hadn’t joined last second lol. The most rewarding experience of me being a marching band member was creating a new family. Family is very important to me, and I’m very sad this will be my last year as a Marching Cavalier.

Cavalier Classic Senior Hosts Sidney Saunders Section & Instrument: Color Guard Years in Band: 4 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

Being a member of the Marching Cavaliers has taught me a lot about the power of my words and actions. Although band is a team sport, a single individual can change the entire direction of a group, and it is extremely important to be aware of your impact on others.

Personal Message: I want to thank Emilee and Sierra for believing in me and teaching me how to have fun dancing and throwing a flag. It is one of the most joyous experiences I’ve ever had. I also want to thank my peers for making each season fun and enjoyable. Most importantly, I want to thank my parents for staying up late, listening to my ramblings, and having my back no matter what. Cavalier Classic Senior Hosts Ethan Wilson Section & Instrument: Trumpet Years in Band: 4 What has been the most rewarding to you as a Marching Cavalier?

To me, the most rewarding experience has been the bond I have made with each and every band member, not only this year but in all my four years as a Marching Cavalier. From my first day of freshman band camp to my last Cavalier Classic, I have built and strengthened friendships that have taught me the value of sacrifice and teamwork. I’m so sad I have to leave in the spring, but I will always be a Marching Cavalier at heart!

Personal Message: I’d like to say thank you to my parents for supporting me through this craziness called marching band by coming to all the competitions and games. I’d also like to thank the leadership and staff for putting up with us crazy people for so long.
