I am delighted to present to you the first-ever annual Issue of Nustian. It documents a retrospective account of achievements and newsworthy activities from around NUST in 2017. The issue has been categorised into 9 distinct segments with a view to acclimatizing our valuable readers with NUST focus areas. 2017 has been a rewarding year for the university: NUST rose to an even higher pedestal among the world’s top Higher Education Institutions (HEIs); over 3,100 students graduated in various UG and PG programmes; students stood out both in academic & non-academic activities at national and international fora. Though every effort has been made to cover all the major accomplishments, news have been kept precise for paucity of space. We are grateful to our focal persons in each constituent institute and department, with whose support this edition could see the light of day.

NUST also holds a prominent position in the world’s top institutions in 4 subject areas out of 46. Over 75,000 academics and 40,000 employers contributed this year, while 12.3 Million and 71.5 Million citations were analysed to measure the impact of research produced by each university.

SEECS graduates win Stanford Longevity Design Challenge – USA 2017 PATENTS FILED 123 PATENTS AWARDED 34
TAME (Tremor Acquisition & Minimisation), a smart wearable device for real-time pathological wrist tremor suppression, was developed by Ms. Hooria Anam, Mr. Arslan Javed and Mr. Awais Shafique from NUST SEECS, as their final year project. TAME won the Stanford Longevity Design Challenge 2017 held in California, USA, beating 9 finalists from MIT, Stanford, Cornell, UC Berkeley, Virginia Tech and University of Waterloo.
NUST launches Pakistan’s 1st Patent Wall NUST established the country’s first Patent Wall to recognise and applaud contributions of its researchers and inventors. Lt. Gen. Naweed Zaman, HI (M), (Retd.), Rector NUST, inaugurated the wall on October 6, 2017, at NUST CIE, and highlighted the significance of innovation to support domestic technology development, research and innovation in developing countries.

NUST stands tall at IEEE – Computer Society Global Student Challenge 2017 The IEEE Computer Society Global Student Challenge, which invites students from around the world to create innovative solutions based on Machine Learning and IoT, was held on June 13, 2017, in California USA. Mr. Abraham Ali Shah and Mr. Muhammad Asad Raza, students of NUST CEME, were declared winners of the challenge, with their project “Diagnosis, Monitoring & Rehabilitation of Parkinson’s Disease using Machine Learning & Big Data.”
Nustians clinch Silver at PolyU Global Student Challenge, Hong Kong Project WISE (Enabling Water Smart Irrigation) by students of NUST - Mr. Syed Omar Ali, Mr. M. Saad and Mr. M. Shees Usman - defeated 189 teams from 22 countries, to win the Silver Award at the PolyU Global Student Challenge held in Hong Kong from June 24 to 30, 2017.
SEECS students win PTV Home national quiz competition Ms. Amna Masood and Mr. Umair bin Tahir, students of NUST SEECS, were declared national champions of an annual quiz competition “Khawab se Tabeer Tak,” organised by PTV Home, a channel of the Pakistan Television Network.

NUST Outreach Programme for Balochistan and FATA students In 2017, NUST launched an all-embracing outreach programme for students in underprivileged areas of Pakistan, to give them an opportunity to avail world-class education at NUST. Coaching classes were held for students of Balochistan and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan (FATA) to prepare them for the NUST Entry Test (NET) 2018. 100 students were coached in the 8-week long classes that were held at NUST CEME, Rawalpindi, and Garrison Degree College, Quetta. This has become an ongoing programme at NUST and will be spread to other underserved parts of the country.

New Research Laboratories approved, set up in 2017 With a view to facilitating research on the cutting edge of technology, NUST continually builds state-of-the-art research facilities and infrastructure, and upgrades the existing ones. Apart from setting up of highly advanced laboratories in NUST constituent Colleges in 2017, a number of labs were approved for establishment in NUST Schools & Centres at the Islamabad campus. Following are the details of these labs, which are either operational or near completion:

Innovation & Entrepreneurship
Finding Innovative & Creative Solutions for Society (FICS’17) Finding Innovative & Creative Solutions for Society (FICS’17) is a year round intra-NUST programme to foster social entrepreneurship among students of NUST. FICS is closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); students submit multidisciplinary projects from different SDG category. In 2017, as many as 205 ideas were submitted from 13 NUST Schools and Colleges. A total of 138 project ideas were shortlisted for the FICS’17 Stage 2, which was held on April 18, 2017. After thorough evaluation of the projects, 52 teams made it to the final round held on May 25, 2017. Finalists demonstrated prototypes of their technology-based innovative solution to a panel of 33 industry judges. The top 3 teams were declared winners and given cash prizes. In 2017, FICS also announced a special prize for the Best Project in Biotechnology. This prize was sponsored by Sybrid Pvt. Ltd. Nano Medicine from the Good Health & Well-being category, representing NUST Atta-ur-Rahman School of Applied Biosciences (ASAB), won the prize. Mr. Monis Rahman, Founder and CEO, Rozee.pk, was the chief guest at the FICS’17 Grand Finale.
A new category was added this year – the award for the Best Aspiring Start-up of FICS, sponsored by Crescent Steel & Allied Products Ltd. (CSAPL), was won by TAME, winner of the Longevity Design Challenge, 2017 USA. Team TAME took away a prize of PKR 300,000/-.

4th International Convention of Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia & the Pacific (FEIAP) NUST holds International Conference on Refugee Crises: Lessons from Pakistan and Beyond “International Conference on Refugee Crises: Lessons from Pakistan and Beyond” was arranged by the NUST Centre for International Peace & Stability (CIPS) in collaboration with Hans Seidel Foundation on July 11, 2017. Federal Minister for Science & Technology, at the inaugural session of the 4th International Convention of the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia & the Pacific (FEIAP) held at NUST, Islamabad campus, on May 16, 2017. Jointly organised by Pakistan Engineering Council, HEC and NUST, the convention was attended by representatives from member economies of FEIAP.
Regions (SAFRON), provided a deep insight into the issue of refugee crises and how it has affected Pakistan. Earlier, Lt. Gen. Naweed Zaman, HI (M), (Retd.), Rector NUST, said that the conference was an excellent opportunity for local and international researchers and experts to share their experiences in the area.

Since the establishment of NUST PDC in 2007, it has been providing quality education and professional development services to public and private organizations to boost their productivity and efficiency. Royal Danish Defence College Joint Seminar with NUST Global Think Tank Network NUST GTTN and the Royal Danish Defence College (RDDC) joined hands to organise the international seminar titled “Peace, Growth & Empowerment: Promoting Regional Connectivity” from November 30 till December 01, 2016 at NUST, Islamabad campus. Multi-dimensional approaches,

6 WORLD UNIVERSITIES The International Collaborations Office at NUST is oriented towards strengthening internationalisation in studies and research. Rector NUST attends THE Asia Summit in Ulsan, South Korea Lt. Gen. Naweed Zaman, HI (M), (Retd.), Rector NUST, attended the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia Summit held in Ulsan, South Korea, from March 14 to 16, 2017. Over 17 university Presidents and Vice Chancellors participated in the conference. Rector NUST also visited Seoul National University (SNU), where he called on President SNU, Dr. Nak-In Sung. An MoU of cooperation was renewed between the two universities.

Signs MoU to establish BeiDou Belt & Road School at NUST The “Belt & Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF)” was held from May 14 to 15, 2017 in Beijing, China, and was attended by as many as 29 heads of state and representatives from over 130 countries including Pakistan. NUST was the only university from Pakistan represented at the BRF. During the event, an MoU was signed between NUST and Beihang University, China, to establish BeiDou Belt & Road School at NUST. Lt. Gen. Naweed Zaman HI (M) (Retd.) Rector NUST, and Prof Xu Huibin, President Beihang University, signed the MoU. The School will provide a first class BeiDou education and research platform in collaboration with leading universities in the Belt and Road countries. It will help produce experts by developing cutting edge skills in Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). NUST is the first university that was invited out of 108 partners of Beihang University to sign this MoU, indeed a landmark achievement for NUST!

Going Global
Every year, a good number of international delegations comprising foreign dignitaries, educationists, businessmen, professors, students and Government officials visit NUST to explore opportunities of mutual collaboration. These delegates are not only given a detailed briefing on NUST academic programmes, research areas and allied campus facilities, but also conducted to different NUST institutes and state-of-the-art research facilities. These visits broaden the perspective of foreign guests about NUST and Pakistan, thus enhancing their interest in establishing formal relationships with NUST in the areas of joint research, fellowships and exchange of faculty and students. The year 2017 was no different, as NUST hosted foreign delegations round the year.

NUST students secure Fully Funded International Scholarships for Higher Degrees Fully Funded Scholarships (FFSs) are offered by foreign universities to partner institutions for MS & PhD programmes. NUST students show great interest in availing these scholarships by competing with thousands of applicants from all around the world. From the year 2011 to 2017, as many as 60 NUST students joined international universities, for example, Xi’An Jiao Tong University China, North China Electric Power University, North Western Poly Technical University China and Sejong University Korea for MS & PhD programmes. Many of these students have completed their degrees from these universities and are now pursuing successful careers in their respective fields. Some of them have joined NUST as faculty members.
Exchange of students facilitating international mobility Student exchange offers broad-based benefits and outcomes for the students as well as their institutions. They open up doors to awareness and adoption of alternative, multi-faceted approaches to learning, and enhance students’ interest in global issues as well as develop a broader general knowledge base. A number of NUST students annually avail opportunities of semester exchange in different international universities of repute. In 2017, a total of 67 students benefitted from the opportunity. There are a number of exchange programmes available for NUST students both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Open Houses and Job Fairs held Annual Open Houses and Job Fairs were organised at different NUST institutes in 2017. Guests from Government, industry and academia attended the events in overwhelmingly large numbers. Hundreds of projects displayed by students in different disciplines were indicative of their innovative potential and competence. Representatives of different organisations interviewed NUST students from the senior-most batches. Most prominent among guests who visited Open Houses was Prof. Ahsan Iqbal, former Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Reform, who graced NUST CEME Open House as chief guest. The Minister emphasised on strengthening industry-academia relationship.

NUST RIC inks MoUs with Inductin, GCCI, PRCS NUST entered into an MoU with Inductin with an objective to prepare university graduates for the market by mutually running professional development courses as per market demands, strengthening innovative capacities of NUST graduates for which they will be offered freelancing opportunities with apt mentorship facilitating them in accessing the industry for research activities and for employment, and providing internship to students. The MoU Signing ceremony was held at NUST Professional Development Centre (PDC) on September 8, 2017. In addition, NUST Research Innovation & Commercialisation (RIC) signed an MoU with Gujrat Chamber of Commerce and Industry on March 27, 2017, to establish a formal mechanism for collaboration and to cooperate with each other in areas of joint research, student internships, social action programmes, industrial visits, strengthening academia-industry linkages and other avenues of mutual interest. Furthermore, NUST Industry Liaison Office and Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on May 24, 2017, under a recently launched NUST Internship Program to acquire over 4,000 internship slots for Nustians in PRCS offices and centres all across the country. The ceremony was conducted at PRCS Islamabad office.
University Curriculum Review Committee Sessions NUST Corporate Advisory Council (CAC) supports NUST Schools and Colleges in holding curriculum review sessions for improving curriculum. CAC, being an intermediary between the industry and academia, plays a significant role in formulating the framework and bringing on-board relevant subject matter specialists and experts from the industry. Industry members participated in various Department Curriculum Review Committee (DCRC) and University Curriculum Review Committee (UCRC) sessions during the last year. As requested by NUST Schools and Colleges, CAC brought on-board relevant industry experts for each session.
Visits to industry made mandatory for UG students In order to facilitate students in relating their theoretical knowledge with practices being followed in the industry, visits to industry are now mandatory for Undergraduate (UG) students and optional for Postgraduate (PG) students at NUST. Corporate Advisory Council (CAC), being one of the major stakeholders of Industry Visit Policy, through its network of over 200 Industry partners, played a supplemental role to facilitate such visits for the NUST Schools and Colleges during 2017.

International Outreach The international outreach in 2017 started with USA as the first touch point. This initiative was led by Rector NUST, and it sought to enhance NUST’s brand visibility as a centre of excellence in higher education and research in Pakistan. In order to establish contact and initiate dialogue with the Pakistani diaspora in USA, visits to 5 cities were conducted in October 2017. Community engagement events were held in Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. These events not only focused on creating awareness about NUST, but also showcased student demographics of NUST, and the need for financial support to transform the university into a world-class need-blind institution. Through these sessions, the outreach team shared stories of several students making it to NUST on merit, but not having the financial muscle to support their education. The audience was moved by these stories and pledged to offer support to NUST. These events also helped NUST to connect to high-profile influencers who promised to act as champions for NUST.

IN-HOUSE FUNDRAISING DRIVES
Batchmark – Class Gift of 2017 NEED Batchmark is a class gift campaign initiated by NUST UAO, targeting the graduating batch of every constituent institute of NUST. Its purpose is to establish an association of the graduating batch with the university; the campaign enables the graduating class to join hands to support, enrich and enhance the experience of current students. This symbolic gift marks the beginning of a new tradition by staying connected with NUST through giving. The campaign started in February 2017; the UAO team had one-onone sessions at each NUST School and College. The students were encouraged to pledge their admission security deposits and form an endowment for a student from their respective constituent institute. 105 students from the pioneer batches of 2016 and 2017 joined hands to establish a permanent endowment scholarship at NUST. For the lifetime of the university, one deserving student will continue to pursue his or her dreams because of the generous contributions of those who believed in redefining futures through education.
Play to Educate Cricket for a Cause Campaign Play to Educate Cricket Gala Campaign was launched in September 2017 to help collect funds for students in need. The campaign received tremendous support from faculty, students, staff and officers of the university, who not only participated in the tournament but also donated generously for the cause. The tournament had exciting matches, wonderful bowling spells, flamboyant batting displays and most importantly, a great display of sportsman spirit.

Orphans Know More: An Education Campaign by NUST Community Service Club
University Social Responsibility
United we reach supports vocational training courses at SMME NUST SMME, like other constituent institutes of NUST, focuses on its contribution to social development through projects and education. In the same spirit, in 2013 SMME started vocational training courses in disciplines that are most common amongst semiskilled young workers in the market, in an effort to develop skilled electricians, machinists and welders. The elaborate and high-tech infrastructure at the Manufacturing Resource Centre (MRC) at NUST SMME was used for the training. So far 4 such courses have been run, and a total of 287 students have benefitted from this effort of SMME.

The training has been funded by United We Reach (UWR), a California-based not-forprofit organisation, which has donated more than PKR 2 Million (about USD 20,000). A kit distribution ceremony was held at SMME for participants of the 2016 training course, where the chief guest Ms. Sabahat Rafiq, Executive Director UWR, distributed essential toolkits among the participants of the summer 2016 course.

StreetStore Chadar, an initiative by NUST SEECS students, successfully organised a Street Store on November 17, 2017, this time serving the NG staff, at SMME cricket ground at NUST, Islamabad campus. Before StreetStore, a processing session was held at NBS where 40 volunteers sorted and ironed clothes. A team of 35 dedicated volunteers was present at the scene to manage the affairs. Approximately 1,200 people were served in a time span of 5 hours. The Street Store allowed deserving individuals to respectfully select clothes for themselves and their families. During the StreetStore, 8 student volunteers worked with a team of doctors to provide free medical check-ups to the visitors.
Blood Donation Drives generate 732 pints of blood
Community & Compassion
Blood Donation Drive, one of the signature events of NUST Community Service Club (NCSC), is held every year in the Spring and Fall Semesters. It provides the students of NUST an opportunity to donate blood to patients in need. In 2017, the 3-day drives were held at NUST Medical Centre (NMC) in March and November, in collaboration with Jamila Sultana Foundation and Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) respectively. An effective marketing campaign attracted a large number of donors including students, faculty and residents. A total of 732 pints of blood was collected during the drives.

NCSC adopts Aghosh Orphanage in 2017 “Orphans Know More” is a project of NCSC, aimed at building a healthy relationship with the orphans. NUST students paid weekly visits to orphanages and spent time with the children, building a relationship with them. As many as 25 volunteers would take off from NUST every Saturday to spend the entire day in the orphanage. Activities included games, art classes, dental and hygiene camps, etc. In 2017, Aghosh orphanage, Rawalpindi was officially adopted by NCSC. The Club plans to establish a library and will also help in reconstruction of infrastructure in 2018.
Mobile Lab Project In order to bridge the gap between practical experimentation and knowledge in public and private schools, NCSC launched the “Mobile Lab Project” in 2017. Under the project, schools are provided with the equipment and knowledge required to conduct practicals. To start with, MLP team arranged necessary equipment for the science lab of Islamabad Model School for Boys, Rawal Dam, Islamabad. A total of 73 students and 3 faculty members benefitted from the project.

Student represents NUST in Mexico at TN Leadership Conference Mr. Faizan Rashid, a student of NUST SMME and an active member of NCSC, attended The Talloires Network Leadership Conference in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, in 2017 as a student fellow of their Elephant Initiative. He won a full scholarship to attend the conference in recognition of his community service efforts. The conference theme was about social responsibility and human dignity in higher education.
Participation in 24th International Conference on Teaching, Education & Learning (ICTEL)
Ms. Sehrish Hameed, Assistant Manager Community Service NUST, participated as a presenter in the “24th International Conference on Teaching, Education and Learning,” held at Imperial College London South Kensington Campus from September 12 to 13, 2017. Two research papers, based on NUST initiatives on Civic Engagement titled “Impact Assessment of Service Learning at NUST” and “Analyses of Student Choices & Trends Towards Service Learning Field Activities” were presented by the officer. Both the papers have been published in the International Journal of Social Sciences (ISSN 2454-5899), besides being published in the conference proceedings.

MCE students launch “Daylight”– a Free Tutoring Program “Daylight,” a project of the UG students of Civil Engineering at NUST MCE, Risalpur, is an endeavour to address learning woes of children of the underprivileged employees through provision of free coaching in various subjects. The project has been initiated with a heartening strength of 40 students from different schools and classes.
NCSC organises free Eye Camp NUST Community Service Club (NCSC), in collaboration with Al-Shifa Eye Trust & Hospital, organised a 2-day Eye Camp at the NUST Medical Centre (NMC) from March 14 to 15, 2017. A large number of people visited the camp; they were not only administered free check-ups, but also provided free of cost medicines, eyedrops, spectacles, etc. Over 1,400 people benefitted from this activity.

Amidst an ambience lit up by hues of red and purple, NUST warmly received its alumni from the senior-most batches to the ones most recently graduated, at NUST Homecoming’17 on December 30, 2017. Alumni from as many as 11 countries converged at the university’s Islamabad campus to reunite with their peers and faculty, and relive some of the most unforgettable moments of their university life. They visited their respective institutes, and also had a discussion with Rector NUST on strategies to further enhance the quality of education at NUST and to mentor students transitioning from their academic to professional lives.

DUBAI ALUMNI MEETUP NUST arranged an Alumni Meet-up in Dubai on July 23, 2017, where Rector NUST Lt. Gen. Naweed Zaman, HI(M), (Retd.) met with as many as 69 Dubai-based alumni from different NUST Schools and Colleges. Alumni discussed at length how they can help to further research & development at NUST on the one hand, and mentor and support current students and young graduates on the other.
Launch of NUST Alumni CSS Club The NUST Alumni CSS Club was launched on August 7, 2017, at an inauguration ceremony at NUST’s Islamabad campus, and attended by several Alumni CSS officers. The club was launched to bring CSS officers and CSS aspirants from the alumni on one platform, where they can interact, network and gain valuable insight from one another. The talk series,
held as part of the ceremony, had distinguished Alumni CSS officers address the audience; they reiterated the key role that every citizen has to play in the progress of Pakistan, and the important role that NUST alumni must play in the development of their alma mater. A special standing ovation was given in memory of late Mr.
Osama Ahmed Waraich, NUST alumnus, and son of NUST faculty member and eminent mathematician Professor Faiz Ahmed of NUST School of Natural Sciences (SNS). Mr. Osama Ahmed, who was serving as Deputy Commissioner Chitral, was killed, along with his wife and daughter, in a plane crash in December 2016.
